Harmonies for Heritage | St Monans Church Hall, Church of Scotland

The community in St Monans has been pivotal in purchasing the 'Auld Kirk' from the Church of Scotland in order to preserve it for future generations. The organ inside the church was originally built around 1850 by the London organ builder John Flight and was partly remodelled in 1935. Unusually for a church organ it has led an itinerant existence, having originally been built for Lainshaw House in Stewarton and having served thereafter in two separate locations in Edinburgh, finally coming to St Monans from Saughtonhall Congregation Church in 1995, where it forms an oft-admired visual and acoustic unity with the historic space. At a time when so many organs are being made redundant, it would be deeply regrettable were this happy situation to be threatened. The research team at Sacred Landscapes of Fife, University of St Andrews is concerned, in part, with partnering with local communities to provide helpful insights and resources for current discussions about the future of Scottish religious buildings. Sowne of Organe is working to create a registry of notable and historic organs in Scotland, creating recordings and instrument surveys for archive as well as advocating for their future conservation in public events. Please join us at a free event during which the 1850 Flight organ will be heard in solo repertoire performed by Sowne of Organe co-ordinators Chris Bragg (University of St Andrews) and Andrew Forbes (Glasgow Cathedral) and in partnership with cellist Andrew Huggan. The history of the organ will be presented, the redundant organ problem in Scotland discussed, and Sacred Landscapes will present their plan to support surveys of the currently threatened, significant organs in Fife churches. Although free, donations are welcome to support the work of Sowne of Organe and the future conservation of the Flight organ in St Monans.
