Save the Date! VANTAGE POINTS - Chase Joynt | Centre for Social Innovation - Spadina
Nov 17, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Centre
Join us for the Toronto launch of Chase Joynt's VANTAGE POINTS (Arsenal Pulp)! Details to follow! ABOUT THE BOOK A provocative book by an acclaimed writer-filmmaker that combines memoir and media as seen through a trans lens Following the death of the family patriarch, a box of newly procured family documents reveals writer-filmmaker Chase Joynt's previously unknown connection to Canadian media maverick Marshall McLuhan. Vantage Points takes up the surprising appearance of McLuhan in Joynt's family archive as a way to think about legacies of childhood sexual abuse and how we might process and represent them. To do so, Joynt stages a series of vignettes that place memoir in the context of other sources, media, and stories to create a tapestry - a montage-like experience of reading with surprising and revealing juxtapositions. Joynt writes about difficult pasts and connects them to contemporary politics and ways of being, employing McLuhan's seminal Understanding Media as an inciting framework. Vantage Points is a kaleidoscopic reckoning with the impact of media and masculinity on the stories we tell about ourselves and our families, a unique and highly visual approach to trans life writing, and an experimental move between gender and genre. With black-and-white illustrations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Chase Joynt is a director and writer whose films have won more than twenty-five jury and audience awards internationally. His latest documentary feature, Framing Agnes, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the NEXT Innovator Award and the NEXT Audience Award. Joynt is the author of the Lambda Literary Award finalist You Only Live Twice (co-authored with Mike Hoolboom) and Boys Don't Cry (co-authored with Morgan M. Page).

Ian George | Upstairs Lounge, Oak Bay Recreation Centre
Nov 23, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Centre
Born and raised in the deciduous forests of Minnesota, Ian George’s musical expression (both on and off the stage) reflects the ephemeral seasonal landscape he was bred in. A frisky and flamboyantly charismatic whipper-snapper of a young man (occasionally flaunting an enormously overgrown orange beard), Ian is really just a simple folk troubadour who takes great fancy in the occasional rock-out. For a decade Ian has been writing and singing songs for a handful of bands ever since the pivotal moment of being mangled and tasered by three brutally aggressive Eugene, Oregon police officers. After leaving the front-lines of activism behind, he turned to homesteading and music as a form of activism. I believe in music and stories, I believe they change people’s minds, therefore the world, says Ian, often. Ian is somewhat frighteningly slender (openly vocalized mostly by his mother) and enjoys performing shoe-less and sweater-full. The crowds really enjoy his ballerina-frolic-through-the-kitchen-adorned-with-nothing-but-his-daughter's-tutu-song/story. If Ian was good enough and could make enough money playing as an Irish fiddler, he would.. But since he's not (not yet) he instead frontiers the Contemporary-Art-Folk-Rock-Music world, happily. He along with his gorgeous band of talented handsome young men (percussion, electric guitar, upright bass) deliver the sort of concert you’ll dance, sway, sing, laugh and probably cry too. The live performance is an experimental and emotional ride teeming with whimsicality, clever arrangements - interrupted by triumphant tangents - and outlandish solos grounded by George’s emotive and gauzy voice and by the simple strength of a good song. Expect an engaging and dynamic string of gentle and not so gentle folk-rock adventures. George has founded and led a handful of bands; touring extensively through the US, Canada, and Europe and gracing some of the western world's most beloved festivals and venues. In the summer of 2018 Ian performed his debut set at the Cambridge Folk Festival in Cambridge, England. In 2019, Ian released his debut solo album Kingdom of My Youth - recorded in Paris, France at famed Labo M Studios. The album charted on the national NACC Folk charts 7 consecutive weeks. Ian’s most recent release Post-Corona* was shortlisted at WXPN’s 2021 Non-Comm Convention as top 10 songs of the year to consider. Ian currently resides in Oregon. The Upstairs Lounge is a licensed restaurant and bar, doors open at 6 pm for dinner service, the concert starts at 7:30 pm Please note this is a LISTENING VENUE

Evelyn Shanahan was a sweet and hilarious little girl who spent a lot of her 9 years at Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH). Through frequent and sometimes long hospitalizations, she still lived her life with enthusiasm. No day was complete without a dance party to her favourite songs. Her favourite part of every day at the hospital was singing and dancing with the music therapists! When she passed away in the Fall of 2022, her parents created the Evelyn Shanahan Endowment Fund for Creative Play with generous donations from her friends and family. The fund provides ongoing yearly funding to support the music therapy program at ACH. The music therapy program at ACH is entirely donor funded and interacts with children thousands of times each year, bringing joy, encouraging social development and supporting kids to be themselves even in the most difficult circumstances. Evelyn's dogs (Bee & Baxter) hope to see you there! 🐾 If you can't attend Pupchella, you can still donate directly to the fund and support music therapy at ACH: evelyn.mshanahan.com

On the Edge/In the Place/With the Earth: Judith Tucker, Painter and More | Paul Mellon Centre and online
Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED

This lecture will explore and celebrate the creative life and work of the British artist Judith Tucker (1960–2023). Through painting and drawing, Judith Tucker explored the transmitted legacies of forced migration, inherited otherness and cultural dislocation thus making her specific contribution to the field of migratory aesthetics. She expanded the potentialities of oil painting and charcoal drawing on a variety of scales and formats in relation to historically loaded sites of collective and family trauma whilst examining social and human interactions with land, place and the Earth, itself immemorially ancient but tragically vulnerable to human exploitation and irreversible destruction. Her work combined interventions in “landscape” painting with cultural theories of postmemorial subjectivities and the politics of forgetting and erasure. Judith Tucker was born in Wales and raised in London. She studied Fine Art at the Ruskin (BA Oxford, 1981) and made her professional and personal life in rural Yorkshire, where she led the programme in Contemporary Fine Art at the University of Leeds, at which she had completed her MA and PhD. As an artist-activist and advocate for British art in all its regionality and diversity, she co-convened the network Land2D with Iain Biggs and was a founder member and, at the time of her tragic death, the Chair of Contemporary British Painting. In recent years she collaborated on several projects with free form poet Harriet Tarlo extending the long tradition in British art of walking, place and the visual poetics of word and image. In grief, but with joyous memory of the brilliant artist, the lecture reviews the major series and diverse forms in her work through her innovative materialities that now form the legacy of Judith Tucker, an artist working on the edge, in multiple places and advocating for contemporary ecological and environmental ethics. Speaker biography Griselda Pollock is a feminist, postcolonial and social art historian and curator. Professor emerita of Social and Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds, she also directed the transdisciplinary Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History (2001–21). In 2020 she was awarded the Holberg Prize for her work in feminism and the arts, and the CAA Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing on Art in 2023 having received in 2010 the CAA Distinguished Feminist Award for Promoting Equality in Art. Recent publications include Killing Men & Dying Women: Imagining Difference in 1950s New York Painting (Manchester University Press, 2022) and WOMAN IN ART: Helen Rosenau’s ‘Little Book’ of 1944 (Yale University Press, 2023). She has curated several exhibitions on the work of Christine Taylor Patten and on Bracha Ettinger (Memory and Migration, 2009) her most recent is Medium and Memory (HackelBury Fine Art, London, 2023 catalogue available) and is currently developing, with many colleagues, a memorial exhibition on Judith Tucker, who was tragically killed in an accident caused by a dangerous driver in 2023.
