For thirteen years, the Wuzhen Theatre Festival has been dedicated to its mission, becoming a hub connecting Eastern and Western theatrical cultures. Top-tier works from around the world are staged in succession, and young theatrical talents are emerging and flourishing. As the world gazes towards the East through the windows of this water town, each curtain rises, a blossoming of civilization. The 13th Wuzhen Theatre Festival will be held in Wuzhen from October 15th to 25th, 2026, with the theme "Serene Transcendence." A tranquil mind and lofty aspirations. It depicts a supreme realm of life and art, combining the Chinese literati spirit of "quietude and non-action" with "lofty aspirations," becoming an ultimate aesthetic that appears simple on the outside but is rich in inner meaning.

The Wuzhen Xizhan Performance Stage is located at #28 Xiushui Gallery in the Xizha Scenic Area. The earlier stage was called "Wanfuyuan." Later, the Longyuan Stage near Dongzha Caishenwan, the Nanyuan Stage in the south section of Changfeng Street, the Changchunge west of Nahuaqiao, and the Sanyi west of Beihuaqiao were built. Other than Pingtan and Dashu, there are also local Yisantiao music performances. The audience are generally local farmers and so as the entertainers, therefore it is also called the farmer's performance. Because the type of tune is called a "Quanshi Tune," it is also called a "Quan performance."

This avant-garde local theater production, crafted by Wuqing Theater Troupe, is rooted in the Jiangnan legend of the "Silkworm Flower Goddess." Drawing inspiration from ancient archetypes in "In Search of the Supernatural" and Ming-Qing era tales of "White Horse Transforming into Silkworms," it reconstructs a life narrative interwoven with gratitude and affection on stage. As a perennial highlight of the Wuzhen Theater Festival, this masterpiece deeply integrates Tongxiang's local culture with profound reflections on human nature. The story revolves around a young girl named Ahua: in her quest to find her father on the battlefield, she pleads for help from the family's white horse. When the horse brings her father home, a conflict entwined with violence and redemption quietly brews amid the wedding candlelight. The creative process draws on the "alienation effect," allowing time and space to overlap and intertwine on stage. It also incorporates elements of traditional Chinese performing arts, weaving together the pure imagery of silk and the eternal tension of emotions. From cultural halls to urban theaters, this play strikes a chord with its raw expressive impulse—is the bond between Ahua and Baima love or sacrifice? Every audience member can find their own answer in the intricately woven narrative, discovering the depth and warmth of human nature through this local tale.
