Agios Nikolaos Hotels with Breakfast

My girlfriend and I went to Istron Bay Hotel, to spend a day in its beach. The beach is absolutely not expensive, 15€ for a set + 2€ to park the scooter, and its environment was very very nice, but really can’t recommend the service. I went to the beach bar/restaurant in the morning to have something to drink. The middle aged waiter at the cashier’s desk didn’t tell me that the payment method choice had to be given notice before the bill was issued. So at payment moment, I said, I would use the card. He unkindly told me, I would not, because I should have told him before and so my payment had to be done by cash. So I did. At lunch we came back at the beach bar/restaurant and had some chicken souvlaky with wine. The quality of the wine wasn’t high and the chicken wasn’t well cooked: these started to disappoint us. But it was the payment once again to really upset us. I gave the same middle aged waiter notice before the bill, the preference for paying by card and try to use my American Express. The restaurant POS seemed to be able to accept this card, because it was requiring me to digit my pin, but the transaction didn’t succeeded. I proposed then to try with different card (Mastercard), but he told me he could not allow me to pay there anymore, I had to go up to the reception to pay my lunch, and that he would have hold my Amex card until I would have show him the payment receipt. I did again what I was told to do and once at the reception, I notifyed the hotel manager about the fact. He apologized himself but didn’t do nothing more than that, not even a call to to the restaurant to talk to the waiter to ckeck it out. Is it legal deciding to keep one’s credit card because of the inadeguacy of the service, that is not able to accept the most known credit card in the world? Is it professional sending a client up to the reception to pay the lunch (after 5 minutes walk uphill underneath the sun), because the inadeguacy of the service? I guess a 4 stars hotels should find solutions to whatever problems may happen, instead of expecting the client to work them out. Last but not least, facilities aiming to stay at hight level of standard, has to recruit employee fitting this standard.

My husband and I had an absolutely amazing stay at the Phae Blue Palace soon after it's re-opening as a luxury boutique hotel. We didn't know the previous version of this hotel to compare to but we loved the ”new” version, with all the thoughtful gestures towards sustainability and efforts to integrate with Cretan culture & foods, etc - whilst still maintaining the quality and personalised service you expect from a 5-star place. Yes, it's a smaller ”boutique” property and OK, it hasn't got 18 restaurants and 6 pools and golf course and helipad and watersports centre with giant slide - blah-blah-blah - but that doesn't mean that the experience is any less luxurious. If anything, the smaller size means you feel like the staff really treat you as individuals (even friends!) rather than just another dollar sign with a room number attached. The location is sublime with the views to Spinalonga Island; sunset dinners at the Blue Door Taverna on the beach are just magical and lots of local attractions are within easy driving or boating distance. You can also do daytrips to several other parts of Crete easily. We made a daytrip to the Omalos Plateau & Diktamos (Zeus) cave one day and climbed to the top of the mountains (high enough that everything was covered in a freezing mist!) and were back in time for a lovely dinner in the main restaurant. (Yes, there were roadworks/building work for the sister site going on while we were there but it honestly wasn't that much of a hassle. You just had to look more than once each way before driving out of the hotel property onto the road and we weren't disturbed by the noise at all.) The thing that really set the Phae Blue Palace apart for us was the staff, who were all wonderful. They really embodied the Greek value of ”philoxenia” - all the smiles felt genuine and they really seemed delighted to help you enjoy Crete as much as possible. In particular, I need to mention Lina Stratsiou (Front Office Manager) who was INCREDIBLE - even months before we arrived in Crete, the level of effort & attention to detail she showed as we corresponded via email was just unbelievable. She was so patient with my endless questions and itinerary changes, and her messages felt heartfelt and genuine, not just slick, stock responses. When we finally arrived at the hotel, we received such a warm personal welcome from her - it felt like meeting a lovely penpal at last or something! But all the staff were amazing. We have stayed in a lot of luxury hotels in many countries and while they all have perfectly trained staff, this is one of the few places where it felt authentic and not sycophantic. Having visited Elounda on many occasions and had the pleasure of using the Icarus Beach Club attached to this hotel, we always wanted to stay here and we had the pleasure of doings so this year, having spent a few lovely days in Chania we then drive to Elounda for a 6 night stay. Nestled on the step hillside with wonderful views over Mirabello Bay and across to Elounda Village this is a truly beautiful and carefully designed hotel. Check in was quick and easy and the staff were very helpful in providing all of the necessary details about the hotel. We booked the standard Mediterranean view room which, whilst very compact, was extremely nicely decorated, comfortable bed and just enough storage space. The bathroom could have been bigger, the shower was extremely small. Our only constructive feedback is that you only get given one free bottle of water in the room for your entire stay, the rest you have to buy and even the coffee in the room is not free. In our experience this is not typical of 5 star hotels. The pool area is lovely with plenty of sunbeds, it is rare to find them all taken, the same can be said for the beach beds. Towels for pool and beach are provided and the staff in both areas are very friendly and welcoming. We are really pleased we chose this hotel and will most definitely stay again when we next visit Elounda.

This hotel is absolute perfection, for a relaxing luxury break. The staff are brilliant - every single person, from the pool, reception, spa and restaurant staff - everyone was always so friendly, polite, smiley and respectful at all times. The food was absolutely sensational - every single dish I had, from the buffet, restaurant A La Carte, as well as the pool bar, beach bar and restaurant, was absolutely delicious. The interiors of the hotel are stunning and the wellness programme / concept of their app to order food to your sunbed as well as book spa treatments and browse daily activities was brilliant. This hotel exceeded all my expectations and I’m walking away feeling very relaxed, happy and full of good memories. I hope to return!
