Hotel Luc, Autograph Collection

Berlin City Centre Berlin|0.84km from Rekonstruktion des Sanchi-Tores
TLDR: The Hotel Luc met minimum expectations of a luxury hotel, but its management failed to address a simple incident, ultimately impacting a very meaningful trip, during which I got engaged. When planning my recent trip to Berlin, I debated between Hotel Luc and the Westin, ultimately choosing the former. Unfortunately, my experience at Hotel Luc has left me regretting this decision. A luxury boutique hotel should excel in room decor, cleanliness, accessible amenities, and courteous staff. However, what truly sets a luxury hotel apart is its management's ability to provide tailored service to guests in handling incidents or requests. So what happened? I got engaged on this trip and wanted to capture the moment in photos around Berlin. Excitedly putting on my favorite cotton dress shirt, I used the hotel iron on the cotton setting. Shockingly, the iron burned huge hole in my shirt, turning the fabric into plastic that stuck to the iron. Immediately, I reported the incident to the front desk, who directed me to email the manager. The manager’s response: “I am very sorry that your shirt apparently could not withstand the heat of the iron and was irreparably damaged. However, I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a refund/ reimbur*****t for this. The use of irons in the room is at your own risk and we are not liable in this case. As it concerns the rear collar area, I hope that you will receive goodwill from the manufacturer by explaining the situation and explicitly pointing out that you have only selected the lowest ironing heat - this may change the liability towards the manufacturer.” In summary, the hotel manager: - Refuses to admit the iron was faulty - Denied any liability - Shifted blame to the clothing manufacturer (Bonobos) - Suggests that I should lie to the clothing manufacturer about the iron setting Upon returning to the US, I filed a complaint with Marriott, which accidentally directed my complaint to the wrong hotel (Moxy). Despite the error, Moxy, an international Marriott brand, promptly offered reimbur*****t, no questions asked. When I corrected the mistake and told them it was the Hotel Luc that was liable, the Hotel Luc manager continued to deny responsibility. A few takeaways from this: - Stay at a larger international brand when traveling abroad for better support - The Hotel Luc failed to address common incident, refusing accountability, while an international brand quickly addressed the issue While the Hotel Luc met my minimum expectations of a luxury hotel, its management’s failure to address a simple request ultimately impacted a very meaningful trip.

The location of Hilton Berlin is fantastic and the exterior of the hotel plus the lobby is very beautiful. Very walkable location with many surrounding dining and sightseeing options. Overall, housekeeping was good. The rooms run fairly small and look dated, so value for money is not that great. Bathroom is clean but not very well-maintained, especially the toilet. The check-in concierge staff were ok but I would expect friendlier and more proactive service for the price we were paying and being a diamond member as well. The staff who was a blonde lady with glasses checked me in and out and was the friendliest staff i encountered during my stay. Rarely did the other staff smile or greet us when we walked past them and they generally did not have great customer service skills, and generally just unfriendly. The front door concierge and door staff were much friendlier and greeted us more than the check-in staff. I also had a very terrible experience with the night security staff when my friend and I came back to the hotel around 6 am after a night out. We walked in and were stopped by a man who was not wearing any uniform, or any attire to signal he was working at the Hilton, and in regular clothes, he was a bit hard to understand because he had a thick accent, and I thought he might be another patron at the hotel or a taxi driver, so I politely smiled at him and said “no thank you” and walked towards the elevator. He got extremely angry, began shouting at me, and said he was a worker there and showed me his keys with a Hilton keychain. He wanted to verify that we had a room key. While we were taking out the key, he was calling me rude and dismissive and that I was a terrible person. It was so jarring because there was no need to be that rude, he was acting like I shooed him away when I’m reality it was a miscommunication. He then went into the back of the concierge to complain about me loudly, didn’t even wait till I was out of earshot. It was hard to identify him as a staff, much less security, and I didn’t need to be scolded like a child. Overall, very unprofessional and made the remainder of my stay feel much more sour. I can look past the dated rooms because I know that is out of the staff’s control at that point of time. But unprofessional and unfriendly staff make the value of my stay and diamond member status much worse.

In summary: Superb breakfast, good rooms, pretty good location (but there are better in Berlin), a few details could be improved. Good value for money. Accor has a huge range of hotels in Berlin, this is for them a midrange offering. The rooms are of reasonable size, I had a huge bathroom, minibar and room safe. Very clean. Bed surprisingly comfortable. Free wifi good enough for video streaming (there's also 'premium wifi' you can pay for). TV and heating controls fussy. Shower gel holder in the bathroom remained empty throughout my four day stay though there was liquid soap by the sink. Reading lights in room below average. Reception friendly, a little chaotic. The hotel restaurant is open in the evenings, snacks and drinks available after hours. Locked luggage storage next to reception. Breakfast is really nice - great coffee and fruit juice, all the rest as you would expect including some cold fish dishes. One level below an 'omelette bar' status but still pretty good for this price level of hotel. Location in Berlin Mitte is pretty good - they're two U-Bahn stations and several bus stops within a few minutes' walk, even though some of the bus schedules are a bit disappointing. Nikolaiviertel is 5 minutes walk away and if you increase your walking time to 15 minutes you can get to Alexanderplatz and Museuminsel easily enough. There are better location hotels in Mitte but it's quite OK really. Good value for money; rates vary quite a bit by day of the week (so if your travel days are flexible play around with your stay dates). I generally stay either more downmarket or more upmarket than this but it's interesting to see how a midrange hotel works - quite OK, though as often in this category of hotel proactive detail management doesn't get priority. I would recommend.

Four things to know about this hotel before you book. 1. If you book early you will pay more. 311 euros a night booked three months ahead. 200 euros a night booked three weeks ahead. Look at any booking website. 2. On check-in they take the full amount of your stay from your credit card, plus a 50 euros a day deposit ”in case you use the mini-bar”. (In fact the mini-bar is empty - see photo). This might be a problem if you have credit limit issues. 3. They use sweaty, clammy poly-cotton bed-linen - see photo of label. You cannot change hotels because they have already trousered your money. To sleep properly we had to buy our own fully cotton bed-linen - see photo of receipt. The reason they use poly-cotton is explained on the manufacturer's website: ”Bed linen must be lightweight...thus allowing staff to work faster....Experience shows that savings of 5 to 10% can be achieved”. Nothing about the comfort of guests. The staff say that all Westin hotels use poly-cotton. Totally unacceptable in a serious hotel and we shall not stay in a Westin hotel again. 4. Because of the hotel's layout, most bedrooms are 50 to 120 meters from the elevators. In the course of a day you can easily walk a kilometre or more to and from your room. In other respects it is well positioned, if you wish to be in Mitte, the breakfast is good, and the staff are professional and helpful to the extent that the chain allows. Garden rooms are a very little bit smaller than rooms on the street, but much quieter and a few have a balcony.

This is a modern functional hotel (which we booked via BA holidays) apparently popular for conferences, so you get the picture. Four of us went for a city break. The hotel is well situated within easy walking distance of Gendarmenmarkt. Spittelmart U-bahn is 2 minutes away. Easy and welcoming check-in. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious. The bathroom had an excellent walk-in shower although the wash basin had the depth of a birdbath. What was surprising was the amount of wasted space in the bedroom with a great void between the bed and the door which could have been used for some proper drawers and shelves. As it was, there was only 1 drawer and 3 shelves, one of which was useful only if you were 2 metres tall (see photo). The wardrobe, if you could call it that, was an open hanging space, but it was situated at right angles to a padded seat (see photo) making accessibility difficult and there was only one chair in the room. Tea-making facilities were available but instant coffee only and powdered milk. We used to take a small jug of milk from breakfast and keep it in the fridge. There was a very good and comprehensive breakfast with just about everything one could want. As a morning tea drinker I cannot comment on the coffee which came from a machine, but there was an excellent selection of leaf teas. The hot food was OK, but nothing cooked to order so that eggs were either warm scrambled or hard boiled. Staff were very helpful and dishes promptly refilled. We didn’t use the restaurant for dinner as the menu looked pretty basic but there are restaurants within walking distance. All in all, nothing special but I would still recommend it for a short stay.

Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz

PROS: - Location: Next to the Alexanderplatz metro station, super easy to go from place to place. Near the tv tower and many other attractions. Nice restaurants and cafes nearby. - Clean and comfortable rooms. Nothing bad to say about that. Many pillows. - Nice views from the upper floors. - Late check-out was possible and didn't cost anything if you were a beOne -member. It doesn't cost anything to register as a beOne -member, and you get one free breakfast, one free bottle of water (big bottle) and if possible, a late check-out on Sundays (also for free). CONS: - Soundproofing. The noice from the streets didn't bother that much on the upper floors, but you could hear everything from the hallway, if someone is walking, talking or opening doors. - Breakfast. It wasn't necessarily bad, but especially with fruits and vegetables there weren't that many options. I feel like for that price the breakfast should be better. - Staff. Again, not necessarily bad, but could've been more friendly. - Lack of mini fridge. There wasn't any mini fridge in the room. Overall a good hotel which I can recommend and would also stay here again :)

We stayed during Oct of 2021. We were pleasantly surprised when they upgraded us at check in and it was a very nice room. The room was comfy and clean. We stayed for 3 days. The last day, we had an international flight in the afternoon. When we woke up, there was no water in the bathroom. So we called the front desk and we were told that there was an issue and they were fixing it. We asked when it would be fixed, the answer was they did not know. They told me that the issue was only on that floor (we were on the top floor) and other floors had water. We had to brush our teeth, shower and get ready, so we asked if we can use one of the empty rooms on the lower floor to get ready. We were told that nothing was available and when asked what they can do since we had to get ready for the flight, the answer was they cannot do anything. So I got dressed and walked to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager. I was told he was busy and he was working to fix the issue. The attitude of the front desk was, it is too bad we cannot provide water in your room and no, we will not do anything to help you. I got back to the room and we were trying to figure out what to do, then the water turned back on. In the end, we were able to get ready and catch the flight but the experience with the front desk makes me think twice before booking this hotel chain.

The room was fine and the area was surprisingly quiet, except during recycling! It is very convenient for Alexanderplatz. However, the breakfast was poor and the coffee undrinkable. I was tricked into paying for a replacement cappuccino and was charged for it. (It was no better). Luckily we had a kettle in the room and had brought sachets with us. The reception staff were excellent. The man we chatted to on our final day was great fun and kept us amused as we worried about our sleeper train. We left our luggage in a safe room and he offered us a key to access the lounge while we waited. Sadly the WiFi did not work in the lounge but it worked elsewhere.

We stayed at Classik Hotel Alexanderplatz for 5 nights and had a great time! Great location, very near to Alexanderplatz, Hackescher Markt, and Museum Island. We stayed on the 4th floor overlooking the inner courtyard. Really nice room, with a gigantic bed and TV. Bathroom was not big but very lovely with good quality fixtures. Staff all very lovely and accommodating. Only points to note were the ongoing work on the facade of the hotel, which obviously can’t be helped and didn’t affect us because of our room location. The hotel room doors and internal doors needed a ‘slam’ to close them properly, which we got used to but nearly left the hotel room door open once or twice. Also a bit of a smell in the corridor - but again, didn’t affect us too much. Overall would recommend, and would stay again!

Excellent location for a city break in Berlin - you are at the Alex in 5 minutes and in the evening you can relax and eat in one of the many restaurants at Hackescher Markt. The staff was very friendly. Distance rules due to Corona were observed, but the cleanliness in the room disappointed me. The sign with everything that was supposedly disinfected, which was hung on the door every day, could have been saved. Under the table were still chocolate sprinkles from the previous one. The hair dryer, which according to the sign was wiped daily, had a layer of dust on it. The dishes that I had washed were put back in the closet by the cleaning service every day, including things that I had not washed yet, which I then cleared out of the closet in the evenings. The sockets in the bathroom were so moldy that I didn't plug in any plugs. I found the previously described missing joints in the shower to be the slightest problem. The toilet seat and the trash can were also broken. The safe didn't work either.

The hotel is five or six minutes walk from the subway station, and the Brandenburg Gate subway is very convenient. The hotel space is not small, but it is wasteful to have a long aisle. It ’s a supermarket to cross the street when you go out. It ’s easy to buy some simple ingredients for a light meal in the kitchenette.
