"This hotel is absolutely not worth the price. The standard is worse than budget hotels even though they charge like a 4–5 star property. Definitely not suitable for families seeking comfort and a peaceful stay. ❌ I will never come back and do not recommend this hotel to anyone."

"The smartest decision I made on this trip to Semporna was choosing Mr. Bean Homestay. The free pick-up and drop-off service was a huge relief. For island hopping, I just messaged the owner my location and a car would be there instantly to pick me up. The town itself is pretty messy, but this place is like a hidden paradise. So glad I didn't stay in town. The owner really does resemble Mr. Bean – a bit cool, with a touch of dark humor. But the service is impeccable. From the moment I arrived, there was someone to help with my luggage all the way to the room. Umbrellas were provided when it rained, and the pool was super clean. There was even a pool robot working in it every night to clean it. We also brought back seafood bought in town for the hotel to cook for us. The restaurants in town looked a bit questionable, and I was worried about getting an upset stomach, but the kitchen here was spotless. Definitely lives up to its reputation as a Chinese-owned establishment. In a word: meticulous."

"Hotel Review Positive Points: 1. Air-conditioning was very effective and kept the room comfortable throughout the stay. 2. Great window view – beautiful sea and jetty scenery that adds to the relaxing atmosphere. (see my attached picture) 3. Excellent location – conveniently close to eateries and the jetty, making it easy to get around. 4. Reasonably priced in-house food – offers good value for money for guests who prefer to dine in. 5. Complimentary extra bottled water was provided upon request, which was appreciated. 6. Friendly and helpful staff across all departments – from housekeeping, café, and maintenance to the front desk. Everyone was courteous and attentive. 7. Special mention to the chef – a very kind and gentlemanly person. On our first day, we ordered 6 fried eggs for breakfast, assuming they were included. The chef initially didn’t inform us of the RM2 charge per egg and kindly did not charge us for them. When we later tried to order again, he politely informed us about the charge. We truly appreciated his honesty and kind gesture. 8. very nice grilled meat at the roof cafe (5th floor).The promo price is 5 sticks for rm9.9 . worth to eat! --- Areas for Improvement: 1. Limited breakfast buffet selection – mainly local dishes such as chicken, eggs, vegetables, rice, or noodles. While the food was tasty, there were no options like fresh milk, cereal, or egg station. Fruit choices were also limited to just bananas every day. 2. Window leakage during heavy rain – rainwater entered the room. However, the staff responded promptly and mopped the floor immediately. 3. No robe hooks in the bathroom – makes it inconvenient to hang clothes or towels. 4. Shortage of bath towels – clean towels were only available in the late afternoon after laundry was returned. 5. Extra blanket charge – an additional around rm50-60 was required if requesting one more blanket, which felt a bit expensive. 6. Low water pressure in the shower – the water flow was quite weak, making the shower experience less enjoyable. 7. Housekeeping quality needs improvement – there was sand in the room, and although we informed the staff, it was not cleaned properly even after the feedback. Extra Tip for Travellers: There’s no laundry shop in Semporna town, so do remember to bring enough clothes for your stay."

I recommend a Deluxe Room or higher category [thumbs upR] 🏨 Hotel: Kapalai Hotel 📍 Location: 1.8 km from the city center 💰 Price: Starting from 400+ RMB per room 🌟 Features: ✅ With 199 rooms, it's the hotel with the most rooms in Semporna town. ✅ The hotel is very clean, and the facilities are relatively new. The rooms are spacious. ✅ Various bed types are available, including wider twin beds. ✅ The hotel offers a free shuttle service to the city center/pier."

"The facilities are old, but it's OK for a short stay. There are a lot of birds outside, so be careful of bird droppings. You can't eat in the room, but you have to eat in the lounge, which requires a deposit of MRY100."

"A hotel of this star rating doesn't even have the most basic slippers, and the breakfast is poor, with only a noodle soup and boiled water. There is no water in the room and you have to go downstairs to get it. The room allocated faces the pier and it is so noisy in the middle of the night that you can't sleep. The air conditioner is also noisy. It is really not worth the price. The only good thing is that the hygiene is okay."

"The entire hotel feels very new and modern, which is great! 👍 I'd even say it rivals the Park Hyatt. The room size is standard, but the bathroom has excellent hot water supply, and there's a balcony facing east, perfect for catching the sunrise 🌅. Just make sure to close the balcony door tightly, or the air conditioning won't blow cold air 😞. The pool is on the sixth floor, and you need to provide your room number every time you go. The hotel breakfast is very good; I particularly recommend their chicken congee 🥣 – it's delicious, I had two bowls every day 😋. The cakes 🍰 look nice, but they're a bit sweet. There's also a SPA at this hotel, but it doesn't seem to be affiliated with the hotel; I suspect it's privately run. You need to book a day in advance, and they only accept cash, WeChat Pay, or Alipay transfers – credit cards aren't an option. A 60-minute foot massage for two costs over 600 RMB 💰. Unlike in China, there's no shoulder and neck massage; you just wash your feet, move to another room, and the massage begins. Afterwards, they provide a plate of prawn crackers and two cups of ginger tea. I found it pretty average, and the price felt a bit steep."

"No wifi in the room (228) Not a bad place for it's price. Shower is big with a big water heater. Ask for a room facing the side you see in the photos. Then you will have a more private balcony. Water stores on the balcony floor sheet the rain. There's no drain. We asked for a glass or a cup but had to pay RM 1 to get a paper glass and create a scene so the receptionist gave us a spoon to stir the boiled water. The cheapest place in Semporna."

"The hotel's location is excellent, within walking distance to the pier and seafood street. There's a KFC and a 7-Eleven nearby, making shopping and dining very convenient. The front desk offers Chinese-speaking service, so communication was seamless, and the staff were very enthusiastic. The room had a beautiful sea view. However, the hotel facilities are generally average. The shower's hot water wasn't very good, and there was a bit of a leak; there's no wet/dry separation. The bedding and sheets weren't very comfortable, but this might be a common issue in this area."

"I stayed in an overwater bungalow for two nights this time, and for the price, I think it offers great value for money. What I particularly liked was that each room has a small balcony with direct access to the sea, which isn't common in more expensive overwater bungalows. The fan in the room kept it cool enough, and I even needed a blanket at night. A special note: the hotel's boat picks up guests from the pier at 1:30 PM. We arrived early and took another boat from the pier, paying 120 RMB for three adults and one child to get to the overwater bungalow. However, upon arrival, the hotel still asked us to pay a 180 RMB difference for the return trip. So, my advice is to just take the hotel's boat!"
