"We had a early flight and could not have breakfast at 6.30. The promised lunch package was not complied with because no one was at the reception at 6.45. We had to open the closed door to leave the hotel, because no one was present to check out and open the door."

"The location is perfect. Short walking distance from the main areas in Stonetown. The pool is lovely and the breakfast rooftop view was really nice in the morning. The only downside: i upgraded us to a suit and it was a mistake. There was only an old bathtub and it was really gross. The normal rooms would have been much better to stay in, so don’t upgrade. Other than that, we had a lovely stay."

"Utterly enchanting- from our 5am arrival until our departure 3 days later we were looked after so incredibly well. The hotel organised our airport pickup and opened up with a gentle tap (you may need help to find it as it’s in the narrow streets of old Stonetown). The front of house was superb and Peter took care of us. The hotel has so much atmosphere, full of antiques and lush vegetation. Breakfast is in the roof balcony. Excursions can be organised. I had read a few unpleasant reviews but I can’t think why, cleanliness was first class and the hospitality was outstanding. I hope you are lucky enough to find a room - we stayed 3 nights it was so good."

"Good location - in the center of everything in Stone town. They don’t have water coolers for clients - you have to go to the restaurant to refill. Also: it seems they bought another building. So they accommodated us in like 200 meters from main facility. Surely it’s kind of inconvenient but still ok."

"The room was clean but too damp. The whole room smelled damp. The price was not cheap. There was a resident singer on the top floor of the hotel until 22:30. If you didn't listen, it was like living in a KTV downstairs. The breakfast and the paid a la carte dinner were not good. I ordered an expensive seafood platter (see the picture). The half lobster in it tasted like it had been dead for a long time. The meat tasted powdery. And their meals are really not cheap."

"Fabulous location. I enjoyed seeing all the curated old artifacts and reading up on the 500 year history of the place. The people were wonderful. The room was comfortable and quiet. The bathroom was modern and clean. I’d stay there again."

"The hotel is excellent, luxurious ancient building. The room is oversized and richly decorated in classical style. The location is good and it is one of the landmark hotels in Stone Town. The building is beautiful and the restaurant is the best with all the facilities."

"Advantages: Hotel located at the port which allows you to explore the entire old town on foot. The room is nice and spacious and the bathroom was generally clean. The staff is very pleasant. Breakfast is pretty good (especially the egg menu items) and the one dinner we had there was excellent. The view from the rooftop is magnificent. Disadvantages: The neighborhood is very noisy and the room (303) was under the rooftop restaurant so there was a lot of noise until at least 11pm and from 6am in the morning. Even though the bathroom was clean we found 2 cockroaches."

"I didn't realize it was a Chinese hotel when I booked. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to find the owner, who was Chinese, very welcoming and attentive. I booked a double room, but it came with a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a separate wet and dry bathroom. The hotel also has its own restaurant, offering delicious local and Chinese cuisine for all three meals. The hostess was especially helpful in arranging our itinerary, arranging the driver, and negotiating a price. It was a very satisfying trip."
