Travelowes Motel - Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley|1.5km from city centre
I realize that my review is the first negative one for this place. Of course, its also only the 3rd review, so those other 2 must have not had the same room I got. My wife and I usually book a night in Maggie Valley in December, and we booked this place based on its rate. That was a mistake. The outside looks decent enough. Older, but there is a newer section to the left of the older section. When we arrived, we were informed that our room would be $15.00 extra for brining our Yorkie, which doesn't shed, doesn't watch TV, doesn't shower, and leaves no impact on the room whatsoever. Plus, the room we got (Room #3) was not worth the original rate, let alone the extra $15.00. In total, our room was approximately $84.00, which was FAR too much for what we got. I simply do not understand how the management and housekeeping, does not take any more pride in their property than they do. The inside of the room has a floor that is in terrible shape (attached pictures), the noisiest refrigerator on the planet (it gurgled and sounded like someone urinating the entire night), and a mattress that needed replacing long ago (squeaks every time you move). Also, the floor literally sinks in several places when you walk across it. In addition to that, the toilet paper holder in the bathroom was missing. Good news, however...I found it! It was in the cabinet underneath the sink. Seriously, how long does it take to put the toilet paper holder back on the wall? 5 minutes, maybe? The next morning when I stepped outside, I found a deposited mask on the ground in front of our room (not ours, because we didn't wear a mask at the room), and someone had left their hat on the bench right next to our door. How does a hat get missed? My advice is to skip this place, as there are far better options in Maggie Valley. And if you do decide to stay here, make sure you don't get Room #3. If you do get assigned #3, get in your car immediately, and this would be a great time to see how long your car takes to go from 0-60.

Econo Lodge - Waynesville

Waynesville|7.6km from Museum of Haywood County History at the Shook-Smathers House
Waynesville is about half-way in-between Asheville NC and the road into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As such, it is nice city to stay in for those who want to visit both places, or need a place to rest while headed to either. The latter was the case for me and, even though I was just looking for little more than a bed with a roof over it, I was pleasantly surprised at what a good value this was. First thing to know: the road to this motel is easy to miss -- after exiting from Highway 74 and going north on Highway 276 towards Lake Junaluska, you turn left almost immediately onto Phillips Road. There's a traffic light at this intersection; and you'll see a Little Caesar's pizza store there. Continue on Phllips until you get to Collier Lane, on which is the driveway to this place. Second thing to know: the driveway is pretty steep, and will probably not allow large trucks or RVs to drive up. If you can make it up in your RV, fine; but don't say I didn't warn you! My room featured full bath, phone, AC, radio-alarm, microwave, fridge, iron & board, coffee maker, hair dryer, and TV with scores of channels. It was quiet, clean, & well-maintained. Most rooms had balcony, with chairs, permitting views of the town & the mountains behind it. Staff was professional & efficient. Free amenities include parking, wifi, pool, and a continental breakfast buffet. The highway exit has several restaurant chains. This is good value for the amenities provided in such a beautiful location.

Breakfast was very disappointing. Room was clean and beds were comfortable . Had a good view from the third floor and an outside sitting area. Location was good and not much traffic and close to I40. Would consider staying there again.
Comfort Inn Near Great Smoky Mountain National Park
4.2/5102 Reviews
Stayed here with my wife for two nights while hiking in the area. This hotel is standard for most 2.5 star, national chain hotels, in that it is clean and has comfortable bedding (mattress, pillows, and linens). Yet we gave this particular motel higher than average marks in it’s breakfast offerings, it’s front desk service, it’s proximity to plentiful restaurants for lunch/dinner, and it’s landscaping, which includes tables and rockers under shade trees. Value for the dollar is quite good. If we could give it 4.5 stars we would have.
