The location was a short walk to downtown Oxford and not far from a bus stop. I was traveling with my mother and adult daughter. We all slept well on the comfy beds. My daughter and I have celiac disease and had put a note when we made our registration months ago. We were both just hopeful for a nice cup of coffee or tea and some fruit. The owner went out of his way to provide us with a continental breakfast that met our dietary needs and was filling and delicious. He was so conscientious to mention that he used a separate toaster for our gluten-free toast. I would definitely recommend this lodging for the friendly and helpful staff, attention to detail, comfortable rooms and the location.

I had a night's stay at the Balkan Lodge Hotel in early December. I booked a single room and was using it as a short stopover on my way to Swindon. I'd never visited Oxford before so it was an opportunity to have a look around the city. The first thing that attracted me to the Balkan Lodge was the free parking. And there is a car park at the rear of the property with room for about 8 cars. It's a large building and after parking I went through to the reception and checked in with the very helpful host John. My room was upstairs and whilst not the biggest was okay. Clean and tidy, plenty of tea bags, coffee, a kettle that worked and a decent little t.v. The bathroom was small but usable and the room was warm. A minor demerit the hotel no longer do breakfast so for the £80 I paid I felt it was ten pounds too much. I was aware of this before I booked so no major issue really. There is a cafe just up the road, 'Sylvie' and I used that for breakfast the next morning although it was pricey. It's part of another guest house I believe. The other thing to be aware of with the Balkan Lodge is that it's a fairly long walk to Oxford centre and all the major attractions. Over a mile I'd say. I'm sure a taxi would be possible though. Overall I had a decent stay at the hotel and would be happy to use it again.

GGuest UserWe received a very warm welcome, and were allowed to check in several hours early. Room was big, well furnished, and comfortable. We particularly liked having a small table and kitchenette for our breakfast! Lovely toiletries provided in the bathroom. There is a small car park, and also on road parking. Couldn't have asked for friendlier, more welcoming hosts. Would definitely stay again.

GGuest UserFirst up: do not, under any circumstances, book a room here. Booked a Saturday and Sunday for a friend’s thirtieth. Checked in and unpacked, then another couple showed up for the same room. Turns out the hotel had cancelled our room without telling us (but, notably, AFTER charging us) and then required us to leave our event, come back, pack up all our stuff, and move out, (or “we will take your things and throw them out on the street”).
The manager on the phone was unable to explain what had happened, couldn’t access the back-end system, and eventually decided that it was our fault that we’d mistyped an email address (an error on our end BUT we had been in text contact throughout the preceding week and they hadn’t bothered to tell us we no longer had a reservation), and then later that we hadn’t clicked “confirm” on an email we never got. Side note: I’ve worked in hotels for years; this explanation is nonsense; and even if it wasn’t - if you thought we’d cancelled, why did you still charge us for the room? I guess this is what happens when you don’t actually have any staff on the premises to sort out issues. As it was, after booking and paying for a room months ago, we were left stranded in the middle of Oxford with nowhere to stay. No apology from the hotel and it took two weeks of both of us dealing with increasingly hostile management before getting our room refunded. Minus a tenner they kept for themselves to pay for “the diary management’s company’s admin fee” - again, I worked in the industry, we all know that this is nonsense, Eviivo OBVIOUSLY don’t charge admin fees per email, but I guess they fancied helping themselves to an extra £10 for all their hard work in not hosting us. Just really small-time behaviour all round. It’s a shame because the room itself looked nice but I would recommend that you only book this place if you’re fine with not actually being allowed to stay in it.

The first person we fell in love is the manager Daniel Kiss. even we have never got a chance to meet him in person. Very pleasant and helpful with booking our stay. Always replied our email promptly. The second person is his colleague. It’s a shame we never got his name. Very helpful and friendly upon check in. Love smiling ☺️. Helped us retrieve key and open the door to our hotel. The room is very big and clean. It has everything you need inside the room. Even microwave. Plates and utensils. Bathroom is very clean. We stayed at the main floor. Not noisy even our room is facing main road. There’s a bus stop just right in front of the hotel. My husband and I enjoy walking. So We walked all the way to the city center and basically walk as far as our legs can take us. We will definitely go back again and highly recommended. Shame I don’t have any photos of the hotel.

GGuest UserThe only good thing about the tower house is the location, very central for everything. But it goes downhill from there, managers are non existent, very difficult to get hold of by phone and extremely rude and uncaring. The photos on their sites are of the two rooms they keep tidy for publicity and even they are not great. We arrived and had to phone, took several attempts for them to answer, they gave us code to keybox, let ourselves in, totally unmanned reception so had to phone again about which room we were in as no one was there. We were told that two rooms shared a bathroom which would have been ok but in reality The only bathroom is on the top floor with four flight of stairs and shared between 6 other rooms! So as you can imagine it was terrible to try and use the shower/ toilet as it was always occupied but we didn't really want to use it as it was so dirty with mould, mildew etc. We were in The little blue room, a small double but it wasn't a double bed but a queen size one so very small. There was a sink in a very dark alcove with no light as it was broken. The room itself was very dirty, stained carpet and bedding, dirty curtains, marks on walls, holes in the walls, large mark on one wall with holes where the bed head had been fixed to wall! Overall a very unkempt dirty room. The whole house had a feeling of disrepair, neglect, dirty, as if the owners couldn't be bothered. So sad to see a grade II listed building kept in such a condition. Feel that they just wanted peoples money and are uncaring of the condition of the house. We were not the only ones with similar complaints and concerns about broken and dirty rooms. When we complained we were told that it you don't like it then leave! We are writing to Oxford council ref the state of a listed building and the owners attitude towards visitors and contacting the other sites where they are listed to make people aware.

GGuest UserVery clean and warm. Our room was at the back of the house and it was very quiet there. Bed comfortable and we slept well. The shower clean and functional. Botley House close to the railway station and the city centre, there are many buses should you not wish to walk in. Value for money

GGuest UserThe Oxford House is a great place to stay for a quick night in Oxford on a budget. We dropped in without a pre-booked reservation on a quick stop in Oxford on our road trip out to Wales and got a room right away without any issues. Our room was tidy, clean and was stocked with tea and coffee. Parking was free and available right out front.

GGuest UserWe were very apprehensive about staying here after reading the reviews but as we only wanted a room for two nights we thought we would take the chance. The room was basic but clean with a good shower and included tea, coffee, biscuits and toiletries. Nice white fluffy towels too. Downsides were a damp problem which resulted in mould spots on the back wall and rubbish in the front seating area which wasn’t removed during our stay. However, at £135 for two nights it still represented very good value for money especially as parking was included and it was within walking distance of the town with bus stops nearby if half an hour walk is too much. The Co-op a few doors away sold some decent pastries for breakfast but there are also cafes close by for something more substantial. I don’t know what some people expect for the money they pay. Oxford can be expensive and this is a perfectly good budget option. We would stay again.
