My wife and I have dreamt about seeing the Northern Lights for years and have been looking at locations for such a trip. We finally found the time to go this year and decided that Lapland (Finland) was the right place for this. There are obviously loads of options for places to stay at various price ranges, as well as a number of popular locations/towns. We decided to stay in Ivalo which is one of the airport towns in Lapland in order to minimize travel time and cost and due to recommendations from friends who have visited here previously. During our accommodation research, we came across Guesthouse Husky which is located a few kilometers outside Ivalo town. The reviews from other guests were tremendous, the room cost very affordable for Lapland standards, and the fact that they raise and train huskies (which we love) made it an easy choice for us. Guesthouse Husky is a family-run place which you feel immediately upon arriving. Everything is very chilled and down to earth, Outi and all the staff are super friendly and make you feel like family, there's newly baked bread every morning for the sumptuous breakfast, dinners are cooked with love and pride, and rooms are kept clean, cozy and traditional. The free-to-book sauna (rolling in the snow is optional) is fantastic and we used it every day. Basically everything you can ask for. Outi will help you organize tours, taxis, winter clothing, and other things as required during your stay. We did one of the husky rides which are done with their own dogs, and we absolutely loved it. Getting the chance to ride and control your own sledge and dogs was just amazing!!! As a guest, you can also go pet the dogs any time you want which was an added bonus for us. As for the Northern Lights (aurora), well you need some luck to be honest. We went for an organized trip standing on a frozen lake for 4 hours without seeing anything. But the next night we were just sitting at the guesthouse playing cards and monitoring the aurora activity on and app, and simply went out to check every 20 minutes to see if we could spot anything. To our luck, we had an amazing show around 1 am for almost 30 minutes with very strong sightings. Guesthouse Husky is in the middle of a forest with no light pollution, so it is a great place to view it. So for us, Guesthouse Husky is a fantastic place to stay in Lapland and is truly highly recommended for all the right reasons. Thank you again to Outi and the whole team!
