Novotel London Excel

London|0.48km from The Crystal
As I was working at a convention at Excel this weekend this hotel is certainly perfectly situated within a 3 min walk. I arrived Friday evening and was met with a completely soulless and uninspired welcome. The room (I was on the 9th floor) was spacious and certainly clean on arrival. I've stayed in several Novotel's recently, but the design here again is lacking in any individuality and feels very oppressive. A large bathroom, lighting was adequate, and for some odd reason the designer felt there was a priority for an electric opaque panel that could allow your guest to watch you shower if they wanted?! Thankfully I was alone, i wouldn't have wanted to share as every time the bathroom is in use the entire room lights up as the light bleeds through the floor to ceiling panel. The bathroom seemed lacking in any toiletries, and had nothing in the shower cubicle so I had to use the hand soap (I normally pack my own but other experiences in this chain gave sufficient toiletry options). In the morning I discovered the drain was blocked and so I partially flooded the bathroom as I hadn't fully noticed, it took nearly 10 minutes for the water to eventually run away. A call to reception got this fixed for my return that evening. Frustratingly as a tea drinker I am always baffled as to how coffee drinkers get so many options, but I only get 2 satchets of breakfast tea. Prob in 7/10 hotels I now stay in housekeeping always fail to acknowledge that I have only drunk tea and don't bother to replenish, something I only discovered as I woke up at 5am. Is it really that hard when they have replaced the milk? My room was warm upon arrival, so I dialled the control off. I woke several times in the morning due to the heat, opening the window made little difference as there is no air flow and just the sound of outside units whirring. I turned the control off but it made no difference and after a weekend its stifling, not helped when housekeeping leave the mirror light on which generates yet more heat. The bar was a miserable experience, the staff are completely unwelcoming, barely speak to you, don't listen to your order and seem unable to even acknowledge you. 2 friends came to meet me on Saturday night and had the same experience so we opted to go to another hotel bar for drinks and food instead. On arrival I had asked for the wine list/bar menu, but was told what I was given was completely outdated and incorrect...so why is it not replaced? Breakfast was OK, again just lacking in any form of customer engagement. All in all it was a functional space with a comfy bed but in this area it comes at a premium. It's a spacious hotel that just lacks any warmth, either in the decor OR in the customer interaction from the staff. I stay in several of the other chain's hotels up and down the country so was a little surprised by this experience, I won't be staying here again on my next visit to Excel.

Holiday Inn Express London-Royal Docks, Docklands

London|0.62km from The Crystal
We stayed for one night on Saturday August 30th as part of a theatre break package booked via holidayextras.com RECEPTION Easy to find, easy to sort parking and a smiling receptionist was a great start. However, you're part of theatre break package. I think the reception staff should have better knowledge of how to get to theatres, especially as the hotel information sheet specifically says ”if you require any local information or public transport, please speak to a member of the reception team”. All she could tell us was the nearest underground is Canning Town, she didn't even know what lines go through it. The hotel information sheet is also missing any check out information, it also isn't available in the room or on the key card envelopes. It literally isn't written anywhere for guests to find/check Alex (possibly?) on reception was very helpful and really knows his tea! ROOM (106) Not very ergonomical e.g. hair dryer cord too short- had to sit on floor to get enough cord length to use! Couldn't hang my dress up as only supplied with thin wire hangers with no dress strap hooks/loops so kept slipping off. No spare blankets, pillows etc. Its far too warm now for a quilt and told, at midnight when discovering this, would have to come to reception if we wanted a sheet. So I got redressed and went down. En route I passed a staff member coming out of the lift as I was getting in to come down. Waited at reception only for the same staff member to come out of the same lift a few minutes later and give me a sheet they'd clearly just walked passed my room to fetch. This felt like poor staff initiative leading to a missed opportunity for excellent customer service. No bath mat or face cloths, had to use the hand towels. Shower gel hadn't been restocked. Don't think basic housekeeping checks had been done in this room for a while. BOTH bedside lamps not working, neither was the lamp over the sofa as a result no option for softer lighting. The toilet toll ran out and there was no spare (we used tissues but considering we were only booked for one night this is pretty bad!) On the plus side the room was surprisingly quiet and the bed very comfy. BREAKFAST Food was delicious, especially the sausages although there wasn't much atmosphere, it felt like a staff canteen (maybe a little soft music would help?) It would also be helpful to provide trays- it's not easy to carry cutlery, serve up your breakfast, make and carry a brew so it's either juggling or walking back and forth. Or if possible, set the tables? OVERALL Great value for money, would definitely consider Holiday Inn Express again if just for the breakfast but this particular site is lacking attention to detail. This was amplified by the fact the GM requests feedback via email, which I gave and received no acknowledgement at all- if the GM doesn't care about customer satisfaction why would the staff?

Loved it! Highly recommend. Super easy to get into town on DLR, and amazing breakfast. Lovely to watch swimmers go past. Staff really lovely and very helpful. Am booking to go again. Rooms not vast, but not too small and absolutely fine (shared a twin room with a pal).

I stayed here for 3 nights while working at an event at the nearby ExCel. After travelling from Scotland and spending the afternoon in the centre setting up for an event, I was looking forward to a clean and comfortable room to relax and have a good night sleep in. That’s exactly what I got. The room was bigger than I expected, very comfortably furnished and super clean. I liked being able to open the window as I like fresh air coming in. There was plenty of external noise from both the building site at the back (which my room was facing, but I was out working all day so didn’t bother me), and overheard aircraft. However, I never heard a thing at night with the window closed and I slept really well every night. Breakfast was very enjoyable, good quality, good selection, freshly cooked and well presented. It was ideal for starting my busy days. This hotel was absolutely perfect for my needs. Close to the venue, and a room which was lovely to come back to after very busy days to unwind and relax in. If returning to this area again, it will definitely be my first choice to stay.

I arrived this evening at 8pm after a long journey only to find the company travel agent had not actually booked a room. The hotel was very busy and reception could easily have told me it was my fault for not checking (which it was!) and left me to hunt or a room elsewhere. Fortunately Axel D was on the front desk and bent over backwards to help. He made a call and came back a few minutes later to tell me he had sorted a room for me, honouring the rate from the company travel agency. Huge thanks to Axel and his professional, courteous behaviour. He is an asset to the group.

I booked this stay for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. The room was clean and spacious. The breakfast buffet was fabulous. The interior of the yacht was amazing and loved the glass chandelier in the centre of the staircase. The chocolates in the room was a nice touch. Just wished that there had been an acknowledgment of our Wedding Anniversary in some way as reception were advised it was our 35th in emails to them. Nevertheless, we had a memorable time.
