The James Lee House

Absolutely gorgeous house in a nice location five minutes from just about everything. C.C. is great and her breakfasts are amazing. Attentive staff. I would recommend to anyone staying in Memphis. We've stayed in a lot of B&Bs, and this is one of the best.

This is a beautiful old home in the 1880’s “millionaire’s row”. It’s been beautifully restored. had an early morning class several morning and I came down to my packed and ready to go breakfast. CeCe made the best cheese danishes I’ve EVER had. They were perfect. CeCe you are the best. This is very near St. Jude, LeBonheur, The Med, UT med/dental schools, Southern College of Optometry and all downtown attractions. We will be back!

I cannot say enough great things about the James Lee House. Cece was absolutely the most fabulous hostess - she recommended the BEST restaurant for dinner, made sure we had everything we needed and then made us an early breakfast since we had to hit the road. The house is spectacular and the room we stayed in had a beautiful tub that was much appreciated after walking around all day. Further, the bed was so comfortable. I would highly recommend this spot.

Don’t know how this B&B got any good reviews. It is rundown and in an iffy area. The stairs are treacherous. There was one girl managing the house who said she could help with 6 suitcases up three levels of stairs. This house was a disgrace to B&Bs. We have stayed in many B&Bs and this was the worst. Don’t be fooled by the photos and reviews.

Set in a truncated row of Victorian mansions, The James Lee House is a destination in itself. And for those wanting to indulge in even more 19th century grandeur, the Woodruff-Fontaine House is just next door and open to visitors. It was very gratifying to tour the Woodruff-Fontaine and then to return “home” to our equally beautiful mansion next door. Setting aside its neighbours for a moment, the location of the James Lee is fairly central but getting to Downtown requires a short drive or taxi ride. However, Sun Studio is an easy walk away. The local area felt quite safe. We waited outside of the house on numerous occasions for taxis to pick us up, and never felt in any danger. Finally, I can only reiterate other contributors’ comments regarding our wonderful host – and breakfast chef extraordinaire – Stacee.

Our stay at James Lee House was awesome! The room featured elegant facilities, beautiful furniture, and many extra amenities. Stacee made us feel pampered, with delicious breakfasts and lots of personal attention.

First and foremost, Stacee was a wonderful hostess, and the breakfasts she prepared for us were wonderful. The house has been beautifully restored, the suite we stayed in was the Harsson, and it was very large in size and beautifully decorated. One of the reasons we chose that room was for the soaking tub, and it was a huge disappointment; the tub was difficult to work, and the water wasn't hot, nor was there enough even to come close to filling the tub, so that was a waste of time and frustrating. It is just as stated, a bed and breakfast, nothing more. That is where our expectations fell short. We have stayed in other B&Bs, and extra touches made the stay even better. We definitely expected those extra touches for the cost of the rooms at The James Lee House, but there were none. The types of things that we have experienced in other high-end B&Bs that were at an even lower price point were a reception in the late afternoon with beverages and snacks, a fridge stocked with sodas and snacks that we had access to, board games in the main room to use and we've stayed at a B&B that delivered fresh baked cookies to your door every night at 9 pm. The James Lee House had none of this, but at the high price point, it would be nice to have and made us feel the high price of the room was worth the cost. This was our experience and our expectations, and you may go and expect less and have an absolutely wonderful stay. For us, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, and it will be a one-time stay for us. Hope this helps anyone looking to make an informed decision about staying there.

Our stay at the James Lee House was fantastic! The room was large, clean, and ready for us as soon as we got there. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and filled us up before exploring. It was a perfect jumping off point for the all the adventures we had in Memphis! Thank you Stacee!

The room was huge with a sleep number bed. We got excellent suggestions about where to eat and what to do. Breakfast was exceptional, the basil oil made me like grits a little better. Any question or request we had was answered immediately. The dinner suggestion on the website for Itta Bena was an excellent choice. The only downside is that there are lot of stairs so if you have trouble climbing them that might be an issue.
