Our second Jetwing hotel after arriving from Jetwing Lake (which was amazing by the way). I was slightly worried when Jetwing St Andrews was on our itinerary; after all I was coming to Sri Lanka and not England, and I spent some time researching other hotels in the area. In the end we opted for St Andrews as it was only for two nights and the reviews were good, it 'is' part of Sri Lanka’s history and it was in the right location for us to hike to World’s End viewing point and visit the tea factories (also recommended). I had nothing to worry about; In fact I really, really liked it here as it was so beautifully quirky and ‘sort of’ English. The entrance was grand and the staff welcoming with warm soup. Yes, there’s a temperature change up in Nuwara-Eliya down from 30 degrees to 12 maybe, and cooler at night. I stayed in shorts & t-shirt but my partner wrapped up some more. She loved the open fire & hot water bottles in the bed at night. When we were shown to our room the sound of building work taking place was almost deafening; they were literally doing improvements in the rooms next door. The staff said they would be finishing soon and to be fair, they did. Our room itself was quaint and perfectly English with some old furniture, a comfy big bed and doors which went straight out on to the front garden. Unfortunately the shower leaked all over the floor every time you used it which was a bit of a pain but we were only there for two nights. We were half board and after a delicious buffet meal on evening one and a few tasty Lion beers in the bar, we slept very well indeed. In the morning the restaurant staff had prepared us a packed breakfast for our hike around Horton Plains which was great. We were out until 2.30pm and when we returned, absolutely shattered and in need of a rest, so had the workmen. I asked at reception what time they would be finishing and they offered to have them stop there & then. We decided to agree a 5pm finish with them so we could relax in the garden with drinks and a late lunch. A complimentary drink at this point would have been nice but we very much enjoyed our chilled afternoon on the patio. We also went exploring the hotel and a member of staff kindly joined us to show us the garden & small nature reserve at the rear of the hotel. We wouldn’t have known it was there without him and you should definitely check it out. Even the old wood burning furnace was still in use which was I found interesting. Together we picked some fresh limes for the barman ready for our evening G&Ts. After a nap we ventured to dinner which this time was a set a la carte menu, almost a Sunday dinner. A few of those G&Ts at the bar and I found myself playing snooker with the staff which was great, something I never thought I’d be doing touring Sri Lanka. I won by the way. Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Staff were very attentive. Room was very good for a one night stay. The food was excellent with plenty of options provided. Location close to bustling town centre but hotel in nice quiet position. Would definitely recommend.
