When you arrive, however, you realize they have done an amazing job turning a somewhat drab concrete structure into a cozy and welcoming Japanese style inn. If you are ok with sleeping on tatami mat floors on futons, the Japanese style rooms are lovely and the communal bath is a real treat after a day of sightseeing. The food at Anjuan is really quite something and beautifully presented. I am vegetarian and multi-course evening meal was absolutely delicious and compared very well with my colleague’s meat and fish course. The Japanese breakfast was also excellent. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive and the many small courtesies on display that explain the ways of the Japanese inn to the uninitiated in English are all very welcome.
