Local Guide·81 reviews·8 photos Couple Would have gained more stars if the duty manager hadn't made a monumental school boy error and taken our almost empty drinks, left the last customers tea cups and a mess on our table. Whilst leaving me to chase him to get my drink back! Without an apology or offer to replace my drink, AFTER he just stuck his fingers in the glass. Literary didn't care. Disgusting service from yet another duty manager. Since we are regular weekly customers it's not a good look for business. And they don't even say hello when we come in numerous times a week, even though it is not busy. 🤬😝 ⭐Note to duty manager's take a leaf out of the bar staffs behaviour..."Hello nice to see you again" with a 😊 is the customary way things should be done here.

First time visiting Paignton and it did not fault. Upon arrival we were able to park at the hotel, £15 for 24 hours which is paid upon checking in, if you do move your car and then unable to park back at the hotel they will refund you the fee for that 24 hour period, there is a big multi story car park a short walk away if needed. The staff on reception were very helpful upon checking in, and the hotel was very clean and fresh looking. We booked a privilege room with sea view and it was amazing. There was 2 cans of water and 2 cans of pop waiting for us which was a nice touch, the room was clean and spacious. The water along with Tea/Coffee was topped up daily. We were told upon checking in that there was no availability for an evening meal the whole of our 3 night stay which was disappointing but we found a few places nearby which we can highly recommend: Hyde Dendy, Inn on the Green & Costero. We found that the hotel do favour the tour groups and they had pretty much taken over the hotel. We couldn’t even sit in the bar for a drink in the evening. Breakfast was £18 if booked on the day or £12 if you book the evening before, we did breakfast one morning and regretted it, the staff didn’t care about us and again favoured the tour group. We weren’t even shown to a table we were just told “oh there may be some down there”. We found Costero was a much nicer experience with friendly staff and was cheaper. If you do wish to visit local places, I would highly recommend just using the buses. The stage coach website gives you all the info you need and the bus station is about a 10 min walk away. We visited Brixham and Paignton Zoo, the bus is so cheap and the drivers are really helpful. Upon checking out the staff on reception didn’t even speak to us and just pointed to the box to put our room key in, she didn’t even smile at us and this was not the last impression we would have liked. Apart from the small amount of rude staff and the favouring of tour groups we had a lovely time and would stay there again should we visit Paignton.

Absolutely perfect from arrival to leaving, we were made to feel very welcome gorgeous room and view . Breakfast was very tasty and all the team looked after us in a very professional and friendly manor. So impressed we have already booked for another visit for December.

Sadly, my 4 night stay at this Mercure was blighted with some avoidable 'issues' that could readily be rectified if somebody or management of the hotel actually CARED enough about their work environment and the guests. I heard SORRY many times but this word alone does not actually get things fixed. I understand the hotel is just a couple of years old and so is in a good state of repair, and has a great terrace at the front where guests are able to enjoy breakfast and/or a late evening drink. Our Privilege room was nicely appointed but had a bathroom / shower design which I thought was a bit strange ... unless you like the entire bathroom floor to be wet after a shower. And No, the bathroom was not a wet room. The room lacked storage space, even for 4 nights and 2 people. Do not expect the buffet breakfast to look anything like the photo on the Accor app or web. It now offers much less variety, though noting wrong with the quality. I would opine there were insufficient staff during peak breakfast hours so the entire restaurant looked like an uninviting mess. We witnessed a staff member at the bar struggle to open a bottle of wine with a corkscrew, then overcharge the guests and then not be able to refund all or part of what had been charged. This shambles took about 10 mins to unfold and so, as nobody else offered to assist us, we decided not to have a drink in the bar on this occasion. Making up the room was not consistent and our room was totally missed on one day. I heard the helpful lady on the front desk 'negotiating' with housekeeping as to whether they would make up our room at the time we requested. Ultimately, the room was not made up on that day as housekeeping finally showed up at 7.30pm (wearing T shirts for the next door Ibis Styles) which was not the agreed time nor was it a convenient time for us. All in all, no more than an average experience for a UK based Mercure hotel.

2nd trip here . Still a very clean decent hotel with not really that many negatives things to say .rooms clean and tidy , staff still friendly and helpful. The negatives for us are , the £15 per 24 first come first serve parking ! and the air con stays on 19 as the lowest setting so it’s always a bit too warm in the room , apart from that it’s not that bad

We booked a "superior privilege" room overlooking the bay for two nights and the view was probably the highlight of our stay. Whilst the room appeared clean some areas were rather dusty (did the housekeeping team find the message written in the dust above the bed?), but the toiletries and hospitality tray were of good quality. We did not, however, have any housekeeping carried out during our stay, despite requesting it, so the tray was not topped up. Where this hotel falls down is the lack of management and staff at breakfast time. We followed the recommended timings and arrived at 7.10pm for breakfast (which supposedly begins at 7am on Saturdays and Sundays) to find that a coach party had been there since 6am and the breakfast "table" was rather sparse, tables had not been cleared and it all looked rather messy. After finishing our breakfasts, a platter of cold meats was brought out, too late for us! The second morning we were informed that the hotel had run out of cold meats completely. Whilst the hot foods, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes, were of reasonable quality I have since learned that should you wish to have fried eggs and/or hash browns with your hot selection, these must be ordered at the bar area! A notice to this effect would be helpful. There was no choice of breads or rolls, just plain white or brown sliced. It is worth noting that the website breakfast picture bears no resemblance to what is actually on offer. For what is supposed to be a 4 star hotel, we found it was below standard and, unfortunately, we would not return, nor can recommend.

We have just returned from 1 night dinner bed and breakfast. For the price we paid our stay was fair but the hotel could and should be better. We looked around the hotel last year when first opened. It looked very smart and thought we would try it. My first impressions on the hotel this time was a little different. It looked quite messy and dirty in areas. Our room was at the back which was fine for us. It was smartly presented. A very comfortable bed and pillows. The shower is poorly designed and water goes everywhere. The room had everything we needed and we slept well. It could have been a little cleaner in areas. We did ask if we could use our dinner allowance as a late lunch as the menu had fish and chips on which is what we wanted. Both evening and lunch menus are very limited. The fish and chips was ok. The chips delicious and a nice amount. The fish small and too much batter and not enough chunky fish. I always prefer mushy peas but these were not available just dried up garden peas. Deserts limited too . Profiteroles ok. The problem was the service once the fish and chips arrived. Our plates were never taken away. I had to find someone to ask for desert. Then that arrived but our dirty dinner plates still left on our small table! The restaurant area was definitely not cleaned properly. There was food remenents all over the restaurant. Seating was marked and dusty areas. Breakfast was good. You do have to order certain eggs and has browns which is annoying as you don't know when to collect your other hot food. Poached eggs were very good though. Help yourself to juice and coffee. The area where the buffet is laid up looked messy. Food and crumbs everywhere. There is certainly a lack of staff and cleaning staff in this hotel. Tables left covered in plates and glasses inside and outside on terrace. We used the very small gym. There was no paper cups to the water machine. The antibac wipes empty. The ladies public toilets were dirty. Paper on floor. I was surprised to see the toilet seats very stained. Looked years old. They should be replaced to at least look clean. Carpets need hoovering throughout hotel. This sounds harsh but cleaning standards in a hotel should be priority. This hotel should be looking better as it is still fairly new. It would be good to see more staff. Better cleaning throughout. A better simpler menu with more choice. This review is not to knock the hotel as we still enjoyed our stay but to give the management some things to work on.
