Novotel Southampton

Decided to book this Novotel as a place to stay for a couple of nights in Southampton for some wedding celebrations. We have previously visited this hotel approx 22 years ago as we had our wedding held at this hotel. So we were familiar with the hotel location and surroundings as we frequently visited Southampton centre for many years over the past 22 years. The location is ideal if you are arriving by coach and train. The coach station is literally on the door step of this hotel , approx 500/600 metres away. The train station is also within walking distance too. You really are in the centre within walking distance of the main shopping centre , the West Quay .John Lewis entrance is only a 10 min walk from this hotel which takes you into the West Quay shopping centre. Novotel has a car park , which is shared with 2 other hotels at this location , including an Ibis hotel. There are plenty of spaces to park, however we arrived off season and I can imagine during the cruise season it can get busy. My only grievance with Novotel is, we booked through the Novotel website and it does say on there that parking is available however you have to pay £10 per night to park your car there. Upon arrival, you just speak with the checking in staff, provide them with your car registration number & they simply register it on their system and you pay them at the counter for your parking. So £20 on top of your hotel booking as we were staying for the 2 nights. We decided not to book any breakfast as on your doorstep is a McDonald’s…literally at the car park entrance….there is also an IKEA store 5 minutes walk from the hotel. You can see it from the hotel rooms.since the hotel is alongside the major road alongside the port, you can walk along there to IKEA and towards the pier.if you’re really lucky , you can admire one of the large cruise liners berthed up…we did , you could look at it from the hotel car park. There is also a TGI Fridays restaurant across the car park entrance at this location and a small retail park with a few shops like Poundland etc. The checking in process was seamless and we got the lift to our room which was one of the top floors. The room was pretty large ..we had a king size bed and a large double sofa bed open for our 2 teenage kids. The room had pretty well insulated windows with some really good blackout curtains. The tv was a decent size and the room also boasts a small fridge with some complimentary bottles of water. There is also a small safe which you can change the lock number on however I’m not sure how secure it can be as these budget safes are battery operated with a manual overide key., but they’re handy if you want to place some small items in there like your car keys etc. I wouldn’t be leaving anything particularly valuable in there or your passports if you’re staying here prior to your cruise….you’re better keeping them with you. The overall ambience of our room was warm welcoming relaxing and comforting which is what you want to
Hilton Southampton-Utilita Bowl

The room is clean and have enough space for three of us. We can see the Ageas Bowl just in front of our window. The shower is strong enough to eliminate the fatigue. Recommend.

The setting is absolutely fantastic and calm. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and very quiet. The restaurant food is excellent (we opted for the three-course evening meal). Unfortunately, the restaurant service needs to be improved. The staff is quite disorganized and the wait can be long. The orders are imprecise and although I had dinner every night with the package including the three-course menu, I had to correct the bill every night because the staff had ”forgotten”...
Best Western Chilworth Manor Hotel

Beautiful grounds! The entrance to the hotel is amazing. It’s in a fantastic setting, lovely to walk around the grounds aha explore. The room is slightly dated in comparison to other hotels, however the bed is comfy and you have a tv and hot drink facilities. Pool, jacuzzi and steam room were a nice touch.

Meon Valley Hotel, Golf & Country Club

I had stayed in this hotel many moons ago when it was part of the to Marriott group, I understand it is now Ellite /Britannia hotels and there is nothing ellite about it. Check in time is 4 pm, and checkout 10 am, that gives six hours to clean and turn around the vacated rooms, So you would expect them to be absolutely spotless, room was clean enough, it smelled of smoking but went, when the windows opened, few hairs in the bath tub, the wooden cabinets smelled musty and dust on lamps, but the bed was clean and so was the bedding. On check-in I didn’t realise it was 4pm, I assumed it would be 2 pm or 3 pm at the latest. I asked if any of the rooms were serviced so I could check in early, I was told there were lots of rooms ready but you have to pay £20 extra to check-in early regardless of the fact they ready, I was due to be at a wedding at 5 pm, I had to accept the £20 payment, I was not impressed as this took my one night stay in this hotel to £189 for the night. In comparison I could get a one night stay in the Park Plaza, Waterloo for the same price in London! This hotel is not worth that much a night. The hotel was like a maze and had to go upstairs along creaky corridors carrying a suitcase case up more stairs with no accessibility by lift to my room (room 657) Room had the very basics cheap nasty shampoo, A few sachets of tea and coffee, towels but no bottled water. At night I could hear a few guests from other rooms, it didn’t disturb me. The pool is absolute mess, it had a pipe going from the hot water tap into the pool, which I burnt my bottom on and my husband burned his thumb, I can only assume the heater doesn’t work so it’s the only way they’ve got to heat the pool, The water didn’t look very good I wonder if the filter was working? In photographs on booking.com their shows a Jacuzzi, there isn’t one! there hasn’t been a working for more than 10 months, and the broken one has now been removed altogether, I think it’s very misleading. I don’t like to book a hotel without a pool and a Jacuzzi, I like to relax why I’m away from home. The pool look too scary to go into, and there was no Jacuzzi! Breakfast wasn’t too bad, Choice of cereals, fruit juices and cooked breakfast, no croissants or pastries. Coffee was horrible. Breakfast is advertised until 10am but they closed and locked the doors at 9:58, I only made it with 10 minutes to spare, it wasn’t explained me that breakfast actually ended at 10. I would assume people could still go for breakfast at 10 and still have time to sit down and eat, this is not the case! Would I stay here again absolutely not! it is probably a £50 a night budget hotel in the middle of nowhere unless you are playing golf I really wouldn’t bother. Disappointed that booking.com gives this hotel four stars.
