20℃, no need for air conditioning, and you still need a blanket at night. The 2,000-year-old stone fortress glows warmly under the sun. The ice lake formed by snowmelt is as blue as a gem. On the forest boardwalk, you can step on pine needles and wildflowers after just a few steps. A three-hour drive west of Chengdu, this is a place not yet overtaken by internet fame. This hidden gem deep in the Tibetan and Qiang regions of western Sichuan almost includes all the must-see landscapes of western Sichuan—snow-capped mountains, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, red rock beaches, primeval forests, alpine meadows—nothing is missing. Even more remarkable, it doesn’t have the crowds of Jiuzhaigou or the long lines of Siguniang Mountain. Visitors are sparse, and prices are reasonable. If you want to find a place to hide away for a few days in summer, I would choose this place without hesitation. 🌿 🚗 How to get there? Lixian currently has no high-speed rail station, but there are several easy ways to reach it: 🚌 Bus (best value): Take a bus from Chengdu Chadianzi station directly to Lixian. The trip takes about 3 hours and costs around 60 yuan per person. You can also transfer from Xinnanmen station. 🚙 Self-drive (most flexible): From Chengdu, take the Wenma Expressway or National Highway 317. The whole trip takes about 3–3.5 hours. The "Lixiaolu" route connects snow mountains, red rock beaches, and forests with stunning scenery along the way. ⚠️ Mountain roads have many curves. Watch for landslides during the rainy season. New drivers should be cautious. 🚄 High-speed rail + carpool: Take the high-speed rail to Dujiangyan station, then carpool to Lixian. About 50 yuan per person. Lixian bus station has buses to Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Maerkang, and other places. 🏨 Where to stay? Lixian offers a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets: · Around Bipenggou scenic area: guesthouses with views of snow mountains and forests from the window, 200–500 yuan per night. · Taoping Qiang village / Gergou: experience Qiang and Tibetan culture by staying in characteristic guesthouses or enjoying the natural hot springs of Gergou. 📸 Must-visit spots (20℃ green wonderland) 1️⃣ Bipenggou | Known as "little Switzerland of western Sichuan," shaded all the way Longwang Sea is clear green, and Panyang Lake reflects the snow mountains. Recommended to take the electric cart to Swallow Rock Nest to face the snow mountain meadows directly. The entire trail is shaded and easy for light hiking. Tickets plus sightseeing bus cost about 130–160 yuan per person. 2️⃣ Taoping Qiang village | 2,000-year-old "eastern fortress," maze-like alleys with natural air conditioning Over 2,000 years old, the alleys are like a maze with a complete underground water system beneath, making it several degrees cooler inside than outside. Filming location for the movie "Sasheng." Tickets about 60 yuan. Open 8:30 AM–6:00 PM (last ticket sold at 5:30 PM). 3️⃣ Ganbao Tibetan village | Pristine stone village, free entry! Prayer flags flutter across the mountains, and visitors are few. Open 24 hours with free admission. You can get up close to Tibetan-style homes. 4️⃣ Gergou hot springs | Surrounded by forest, soak at dusk with mountain views Known as "western Sichuan’s top hot spring," surrounded by forest with warm spring water. Relax in the hot springs after a day of activities and enjoy the distant mountains at dusk. 5️⃣ Liantaigou | Free hidden gem! Red rock beach + snow mountain forest Continuous red rock beaches paired with snow mountain forests. Free entry. Stop and take photos along the road when driving. 6️⃣ Mengtun Valley | "Backpacker’s paradise," a secret spot for camping lovers Pristine ecological valley with icy cold streams in summer. Suitable for light hiking or camping. On clear nights, you can see a sky full of stars. 🍜 Must-try foods (Tibetan and Qiang flavors, about 50 yuan per person to eat your fill) · Yak meat hot pot / traditional fire pot: firm meat paired with alpine mushrooms, a must-try! · Handmade potato cakes: soft and chewy, delicious dipped in honey or chili powder · Freshly baked highland barley cakes / butter tea: savory and crispy, perfect with butter tea · Wild mushroom hot pot: fresh summer mushrooms simply cooked · Gastrodia health chicken: chicken soup with gastrodia for calming effects · Street-side sauerkraut noodles: sour and spicy, appetizing · Seasonal fruits: local cherries, sugar-heart apples (seasonal), Qiang crispy plums ⚠️ For affordable food, prioritize small shops in the county residential areas. Prices near scenic spots tend to be higher. 💡 Travel tips: 🌡️ Weather and clothing: Lixian’s summer average temperature is 20–23℃, but there is a big temperature difference between day and night. Short sleeves during the day, but bring a light jacket or windbreaker for mornings and evenings. On July 27, Milaro is 16–26℃, Ganbao Tibetan village 17–28℃. 👒 Sunscreen is essential: The highland UV rays are extremely strong. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are all must-haves, even on cloudy days. 👟 Shoes and altitude sickness: Trails have many stone slabs and slippery boardwalks. Wear non-slip flat shoes. Bipenggou is at a high altitude, so walk slowly and avoid running. Bring two oxygen bottles if you are prone to altitude sickness. 🙏 Respect the culture: When visiting Tibetan and Qiang villages, do not step on prayer flags or mani stones. Ask permission before photographing residents. Keep quiet inside Qiang villages and avoid disturbing people. 🚫 Avoid pitfalls: Don’t trust unlicensed roadside taxis (they charge 150 yuan per person). Mountain roads have many curves during the rainy season, so drive slowly. To save money, stay and eat in small county shops. 🎯 Key points: The right way to explore Lixian—see snow mountains and lakes at Bipenggou, explore the millennia-old fortress at Taoping Qiang village, soak in natural hot springs at Gergou, and photograph red rock beaches at Liantaigou. Three days and two nights cost about 800–1,200 yuan per person to experience the Tibetan and Qiang secret spots and enjoy a 20℃ summer. Just 3 hours from Chengdu, go before more people discover it 🌿

The choice of Western Sichuan routes mainly depends on your time and physical strength. Here are some of the most classic and highly recommended itineraries: 3-Day Short Loop (Best for Beginners) Chengdu → Siguniang Mountain (Shuangqiao Valley) → Danba Jiaju Tibetan Village → Moxi Park → Tagong Grassland → Xinduqiao → Honghaizi → Kangding → Chengdu. This route has a high density of scenic spots, including snow mountains, Tibetan villages, grasslands, and exotic stone forests. The journey is short with relatively gentle altitude gains, making it suitable for weekend trips or first-time visitors to the plateau. 5-Day Classic Loop (Including Daocheng Yading) Day 1: Chengdu → Kangding → Honghaizi → Xinduqiao; Day 2: Xinduqiao → 18 Bends of the Sky Road → Litang → Shangri-La Town; Day 3: One-day tour of Daocheng Yading; Day 4: Return via Tuer Mountain → Litang → Tagong → Danba; Day 5: Danba → Siguniang Mountain → Chengdu. Choose this route if you want to experience the "last pure land of the blue planet" and the core scenery of Western Sichuan all at once. 7-8 Day Grand Loop (In-depth Panoramic) Based on the 5-day route, this adds the Seda Buddhist Academy, Eye of Gnie, Xinlong/Ganzi, and other secret spots in northern Sichuan, or completes the long Yading route (Five Color Lake, Milk Lake). If you have ample time and can adapt to higher altitudes (such as Daocheng and Seda), this route offers the most complete visual enjoyment, but it is long and involves many days of driving. 3-4 Day Seda Cultural Route Chengdu → Dujiangyan → Siguniang Mountain → Danba → Daofu → Seda → Guanyinqiao → Maerkang → Chengdu. This is more suitable for those interested in Tibetan Buddhist cultural sites and not focused on intense snow mountain trekking. Mid-May is the perfect time to visit Western Sichuan, as the grasslands begin to turn green and rhododendrons bloom. For first-timers, it is recommended to prioritize the 3-day short loop or the 5-day classic route. If you encounter rain or snow on Zheduo Mountain, you can detour via Provincial Road 434. Remember to bring sun protection and warm clothing, and try to avoid bathing on the first night at high altitude to prevent altitude sickness.

If you're planning a trip to Western Sichuan and are tired of the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourist spots, I highly recommend pinning "Gengda Temple" (更达寺) in Maerkang on your map. This ancient Nyingma sect temple is peacefully nestled in the crevices of Faluo Mountain. The highlight that left me completely speechless is the "32 Golden Pagodas" lined up along the hillside. When the sunlight hits them, the radiant gold contrasts beautifully against the deep blue sky and lush green mountains in the background—it's utterly breathtaking. Plus, there are majestic statues of Guru Rinpoche and a giant Avalokitesvara standing prominently. The best part is, it's "Free entry! No ticket required," and there are very few people! (Hardly any Chinese tour groups). You can walk around and take exclusive photos. The atmosphere is serene; you can hear the birds, the wind, and local villagers spinning prayer wheels (there's a giant 6-meter-tall prayer wheel here that you can join in spinning for blessings). It's an absolute must-visit spot for merit-makers and photography enthusiasts. 💡 [Travel Tips] How to get there conveniently, fast, and on a budget? If you don't do your homework before traveling to this zone, transportation costs can skyrocket. Here is the method I tried that works and is the most cost-effective: 1. Starting from Chengdu to Maerkang: The fastest and most economical way: Take a coach from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站) straight to Maerkang. It takes about 4-5 hours. The expressway is very smooth, and the ticket costs only a few hundred Thai Baht. It's much better than renting a car and driving yourself from Chengdu, saving you thousands. 2. From Maerkang city center to Gengda Temple (Key point): The temple is located on Meigu Street, not far from the center of Maerkang. Absolutely do not walk there yourself: Because the temple is on a hill, the path is quite steep and exhausting. The most cost-effective way: Use the Didi app (Chinese ride-hailing) to call a car straight from your hotel in Maerkang to the temple. It's very cheap (just a few dozen RMB), convenient, fast, and you definitely won't be overcharged. If you come in a group of 3-4, splitting the fare costs almost nothing per person. 3. Top tricks for photo lovers & spiritual seekers: Outfit: I recommend wearing a "white outfit" or light-toned clothes. When taking photos with the golden pagodas and the red-and-white Tibetan architecture, the contrast is stunning and very photogenic. It feels like stepping into a sacred land. Walking direction: When walking around the temple or spinning the prayer wheels, always walk "clockwise." This is to show respect and follow local customs. Altitude matters: Maerkang is at an altitude of about 2,600 meters above sea level (and Gengda Temple is slightly higher). For Thais, this might take some getting used to. I recommend taking it easy on the first day—walk slowly, sip water frequently, and it's a good idea to carry altitude sickness medicine (like Rhodiola) or canned oxygen with you.

If you ever find yourself in Barkam and skip a trip up to Changlie Monastery, you're missing out big time! Perched on the Changlie mountain peak at an altitude of about 3,400 meters above sea level, this historic Nyingma sect monastery dates back over 800 years. It has been magnificently restored, seamlessly blending traditional Tibetan artistry with modern touches. ✨ What Impressed Me the Most: · Exquisite Architecture: The 6-story main building is incredibly unique. Inside, you'll find Nepali-style golden Buddha statues, white marble pillars, and Italian chandeliers (an unlikely combo that is surprisingly gorgeous!). · The Largest Prayer Wheel: The highlight is a colossal "golden prayer wheel" that monks constantly walk around and spin. The ringing bells and the palpable devotion here create an awe-inspiring, goosebump-inducing atmosphere. · Million-Dollar Views: From the monastery's balcony, you'll be treated to endless views of snow-capped mountain ranges. It's a prime photo spot where every click of the shutter yields a stunning shot. 💡 Travel Tips (From Personal Experience): 1. Getting There: From downtown Barkam, I recommend taking a taxi or chartering a car up (around a 40-minute ride). The road is steep and full of twists and turns, so if you're prone to motion sickness, make sure to bring meds. 2. Best Time to Visit: Aim to arrive before 10:00 AM. The weather is pleasant, not too hot, and the lighting is absolutely perfect for photography. 3. Recommended Walking Route: After parking, don't rush straight into the main building. Head left along the dirt path to "spin the prayer wheels" (clockwise). It takes about 20 minutes before you proceed to the main hall. 4. Preparation: · Sun Protection: The sun is brutal up here (high UV). A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are absolute must-haves! · Clothing: It might be warm down in the city, but it gets incredibly windy and chilly at the summit. Be sure to pack a windbreaker or a long-sleeved shirt. 5. Etiquette: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the hall where the Buddha statues are enshrined. Please maintain silence, as this is a sacred place of practice. Bottom Line: This is a deeply serene destination, perfect for finding peace of mind and soaking in the snowy peaks. If you're a fan of culture and nature, I guarantee this place is the real deal! 🏯🙏

If you think the temples in Tibet are stunning, wait until you see Changlie Monastery in Aba Prefecture. It’s not just a religious site; it feels like a "golden temple floating in the clouds" sitting at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level. ✨ What makes this place special: · Architectural masterpiece: The intricately carved stone dragon pillars wrapped around the temple are absolutely exquisite. The walkways are as shiny as mirrors, perfectly reflecting the sky and snow-capped mountains (just like in my photos, but trust me, it’s 10 times more magnificent in person!). · Pure tranquility: Because it isn’t overrun by tour groups yet, you can actually hear the prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the soothing chants echoing through the mountains. · Million-dollar views: From the temple’s balcony, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Eastern Plateau. 💡 Traveler Tips: 1. Getting there: The monastery sits atop Changlie Mountain, about a 45-minute drive from downtown Barkam (Maerkang). I highly recommend hiring a local driver because the mountain roads are incredibly steep and winding. The paved roads are in good condition, and regular sedans can make it, but you definitely need an experienced driver. 2. Watch out for altitude sickness: At 3,400 meters high, it’s crucial to take it easy. Walk slowly and don’t get too carried away running around for photos. Be sure to bring altitude sickness medication or a portable oxygen canister just in case. 3. The best time to visit: Aim to arrive in the morning (9:00 - 11:00 AM). The sunlight hitting the golden roof is spectacular, and the weather is still cool. If you're lucky, you might even catch a sea of clouds blanketing the city below. 4. Must-capture photo spots: Head to the balcony hall with the white dragon pillars and shoot outward to capture the snow-capped mountains in the background. Don't forget to point your camera down at the reflections on the marble floor—it creates a stunning illusion of the temple floating in the sky. 5. Dress code: This is a strict place of worship, so dress modestly (no shorts or sleeveless shirts) and remember to take off your hat when entering the temple grounds. In short: If you're traveling through Western Sichuan and want to avoid the massive crowds you'd find in places like Seda, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary. It's beautiful, peaceful, and incredibly powerful!

Before you pack your bags and embark on this spiritual journey, take a look at this carefully compiled guide to help you have a perfect trip to Seda. Seda Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, the largest Tibetan Buddhist academy in the world Seda Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, a pure land of Buddha, is located in Luoruo Town, Seda County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Countless crimson-red monk houses densely cover the hillside, creating a magnificent and spectacular scene. Reservation method Make sure to book 48 hours in advance on the "Larunggou Jingou" mini program. There are only two booking slots per day, at 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Make sure to book on time to avoid missing out. The origin of the red houses Initially, newly arrived practitioners, in order to solve the accommodation problem, used local materials and built simple wooden sheds on the hillside. To give these dwellings sacred meaning, they painted them all red. Over time, red became the main color of this land, and the red houses became a unique symbol of Seda. Photography tips Corridor shots: The corridors on both sides of the academy are excellent photo spots. Standing in the corridor, you can take photos of yourself with the red houses, and also capture the scattered red monk houses in the distance, creating a photo with a rich sense of layering. Back mountain view: If you want to overlook the entire Seda, you need to challenge yourself with a hike up the back mountain, which has an altitude of 4,300 meters. Although the process is somewhat difficult, when you reach the top of the mountain, the red houses all over the mountain against the blue sky and white clouds look like a beautiful painting unfolding before your eyes. Every shot is a masterpiece. When night falls, the starry river is bright, and the dotted lights in the red houses make it feel like you've entered the dreamy cartoon world of Hayao Miyazaki. I met a local lady selling handcrafted beaded necklaces by her door. She told me she blessed the lotus flower pendant herself, which is such a wholesome touch 💖. Now, whenever I wear it, I get all the feels thinking about her kindness, this village’s unique details, and centuries of history in those stone walls. In the afternoon, take the Yaxi Expressway from Xichang and return to Chengdu in about 5–6 hours, concluding your pleasant journey. · ** 💡 Travel tips · Seasonal reminder: By mid-to-late September, Western Sichuan has entered early autumn, and there is a significant temperature difference between day and night (around 20°C during the day, potentially dropping to 5–10°C at night). Be sure to bring a windproof, warm jacket or a lightweight down jacket. · Altitude sickness: All three routes include areas at altitudes above 3,000 meters (especially Nianbaoyeze and Lover's Lake). Ensure you are well-rested before departure, avoid strenuous exercise, and pack some common medications (such as Rhodiola, cold medicine, and gastrointestinal medicine). · Traffic conditions: It is recommended to set off early during holidays to avoid traffic jams. Some mountain roads (such as the road to Nianbaoyeze) are narrow and winding, requiring cautious driving. We recommend having an experienced driver behind the wheel. · Supplies: Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat (UV rays are strong at high altitudes), as well as plenty of snacks and water. Signal can be poor in some areas, so download offline maps in advance.

Luhuo, this quiet little city located in the north of Ganzi Prefecture, is often overlooked by hurried travelers, yet it hides the most moving light and shadow of Western Sichuan. There is no hustle and bustle of over-commercialization here, only the mirror-like reflections of Kasa Lake, the solemn red walls of Shouling Temple, and the unpredictable clouds of the plateau. When you step onto this land, every time you look up is a surprise, and every frame is enough to soothe the soul. Snow-capped mountains loom in the sea of clouds, like a shy fairy. Looking out from a high vantage point, thick clouds pile up like cotton wool, while distant snow peaks pierce the sky, revealing a corner of cold, stark white. This "half-hidden" scene is more mysterious than a clear, cloudless sky. The wind howls in your ears—that is the unique breath of the plateau—making you instantly forget the worries of the world, wishing only to quietly gaze at this eternal magnificence above the clouds. The brown steed has clear, gentle eyes, with a long road and a traveling horse team behind it. In Luhuo, horses are not just a means of transport, but partners on the plateau. It seems full of curiosity about the lens, tilting its head slightly as if asking the visitor from afar. The blurred figures in the background and the blue sky and white clouds form the most vivid picture of pastoral life. At this moment, time slows down, leaving only a harmonious gaze between man and nature. Shifting the gaze to the deep valley, the green mountains on both sides are like dark eyebrows, with clouds and mist lingering on the mountainside, like a white Hada offered to the mountains. The buildings faintly visible in the valley are the marks left by humans in this vast world. The air here is moist, carrying the fragrance of soil and grass. Looking at this photo, you can almost hear the echoes from the depths of the valley—the most primitive call of nature, making one want to go deep inside to explore those undeveloped secret realms. Who would have thought that one could encounter such a clear rainbow next to modern buildings? The fourth photo captures this rare moment. The rainbow is like a colorful bridge connecting the sky and the earth, draping a dreamy coat over the slightly cold and hard yellow buildings. This is a gift after the rain, a symbol of good luck. Standing on the street looking up, the emotion of that moment is beyond words, as if the whole city were gently embraced by this beauty. If a single rainbow is a surprise, then a double rainbow is a miracle. In the fifth photo, the primary rainbow is bright and eye-catching, while the secondary rainbow is elegant and hazy, both crossing the deep blue sky in parallel. Utility poles and eaves become the foreground, adding a touch of everyday life. This strong color contrast shows the rapidly changing weather of the plateau. In this place closest to the sky, nature generously splashes its palette, making one marvel at the magic of the Creator. Under the blue sky and white clouds, a unique sculpture or tower-like building stands, with a peculiar shape full of Tibetan cultural symbols. It is like a silent guardian, watching the changes of this land. The surrounding clouds are as white as snow, and the sky is a deep blue. This is not just a landscape, but a spiritual sustenance. Looking at it, a sense of awe arises involuntarily in the heart—that is respect for faith and deep love for this land. The building from a low-angle view shows an amazing geometric beauty. White walls, blue glass windows, and regularly arranged small holes form a dialogue between modern and traditional. Sunlight spills over it, creating rich layers of light and shadow. This may be a corner of the new city of Luhuo, showing that there are not only ancient legends here, but also a modern pulse. This highly orderly picture makes people feel a rational tranquility, a detail that photography enthusiasts should not miss. The red walls of Shouling Temple look exceptionally dazzling in the sunlight, as two pedestrians in Tibetan robes walk by slowly, their shadows stretched long. This picture is full of storytelling; the red walls symbolize passion and holiness, while the calmness of the pedestrians represents the normality of life. Here, religion and life are perfectly integrated. Every step is a form of practice, and every touch of red tells the weight of history. At this moment, I am willing to be a quiet observer, feeling this peaceful passage of time. Looking at the full view of Luhuo County, houses are built against the mountain, layered and well-arranged. In the distance are rolling green mountains, and nearby is a vibrant home. There is no oppression of high-rise buildings here, only the warmth of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Looking at this land, you will understand why people say it is the "center of Kangbei." It is not just a geographical coordinate, but a warm harbor, accepting every traveler who comes from afar. Luhuo Travel Guide 🚗 Transportation Self-driving: Luhuo is located on National Highway G317 and is a must-pass on the Northern Sichuan-Tibet Route. Departing from Chengdu, pass through Wenchuan, Maerkang, and Guanyinqiao to reach Luhuo. The total distance is about 600 km. Road conditions are generally good, but be aware of landslides in summer and black ice in winter. Bus: There are direct buses to Luhuo from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station, with a travel time of about 10–12 hours. 🏞️ Must-visit Attractions Kasa Lake: Located about 30 km from the county seat, it is the largest waterbird habitat in Northwest Sichuan. The lake is wide, reflecting the surrounding mountains. The light and shadow in the early morning and evening are the most beautiful, perfect for taking "snow mountain and lake" photos. Shouling Temple: Located on the mountainside in the north of the county, it is the best place to view the panoramic view of Luhuo County. The temple architecture is magnificent, and the red walls and golden roofs look great against the blue sky. You might even encounter monks debating scriptures. Stone Coffin Tomb Ruins: Friends interested in history can explore here. It has a unique burial culture that is mysterious and ancient. Zongta Grassland: If you visit around July, the "Seven-Color Grassland" here blooms into a sea of flowers, like a palette overturned by God, which is very spectacular. 🍲 Food Recommendations Huo'er Cuisine: Luhuo was anciently known as "Huo'er," and the food here is unique. It is recommended to try Tuotuo meat, blood sausage, butter tea, and highland barley cakes. Pickled vegetable noodle chunks: A local homemade delicacy, sour and spicy, very suitable for the plateau climate. 📷 Photography Tips Best time: June–September is the best travel season, with pleasant weather and lush flowers and grass. Light: For shooting cultural subjects (such as monks and Tibetan people), it is recommended to shoot in the early morning or evening when the light is soft and textured; for shooting landscapes (such as rainbows and cloud seas), you need a bit of luck, as the probability is highest when it clears up after rain. Respect customs: Please keep quiet when shooting in temples. Some halls may prohibit photography, so please follow the rules. It is best to ask for permission before shooting people. ⚠️ Important Notes Altitude sickness: The altitude of Luhuo is about 3,200 meters. Do not engage in strenuous exercise upon arrival, keep warm, and you may want to prepare some oxygen bottles. Clothing: The plateau weather is changeable. Even in summer, bring a thick jacket or windbreaker, as there is a large temperature difference between day and night. Share travel through photography, and enjoy photography while traveling. Standing in front of the Lianbaoyeze Stone Castle with my child, they let out a "wow" 🏔️ The "granite peak forests" in textbooks are better seen in person by your child. It's not as crowded as Jiuzhaigou, and the paths are easy to walk—you can even push a stroller for part of the way. My kid is seven and walked the whole thing, and still talks about how the rocks look like a castle. Destination Overview Lianbaoyeze is located in Aba County, Sichuan, at an altitude of around 4,000 meters, and is one of the ten sacred mountains in the Tibetan region. Thousands of gray stone peaks form a circle, with alpine lakes scattered below, known as the "Stone Castle." The scenic area has well-maintained boardwalks, suitable for family trips. The air is clean, the clouds are low, and my child spent the whole way counting what animals the clouds looked like. 👨‍👩‍👧 What to do with kids 1. Stroll along the Zhagaer Cuo Lake boardwalk The wooden boardwalk circles the lake for about 2 km. It's mostly flat, so kids can walk on their own. The lake is blue-green with the stone mountains reflected in it; identify plants while walking. · Walk slowly, half an hour for a full loop is just right · It's windy by the lake, put a hat on your child · Pick up a few smooth stones as souvenirs (don't pick up ones that are too big) 2. See the stone sculpture groups Along the way, there are iconic rocks like "Thousand-Man Array" and "General Rock." Let your child use their imagination to guess what they look like; it's more fun than just looking at the scenery. · Have a contest to see who can tell the most ridiculous story · Take a photo of your child's back as they point at the peaks 3. See the marmots You can occasionally see chubby marmots on the meadow. Just take photos from a distance; don't feed them or get close. · Use a telephoto lens to zoom in · Tell your child that wild animals are afraid of people 4. Prairie picnic Find a sheltered grassy area, lay out a picnic mat, and eat the bread and fruit you brought. Let the kids run around and the adults rest. · Bring a frisbee, the kids can play for an hour · Choose a moisture-proof picnic mat, as the grass has dew 🎒 Packing list for kids · Sunscreen SPF50+, the UV rays on the plateau are strong · Sunglasses and sun hats, make sure to have kid-sized ones too · Bring a thick jacket, even in summer · Small snacks, thermos with warm water · Portable oxygen canister, available at shops in the county town · Wet wipes, hand sanitizer · Fever patches and stomach soothing tablets that your child usually takes · Lightweight stroller, only for the boardwalk section; switch to a baby carrier for mountain paths · Small drawing board and colored pens, keeps the child quiet for two hours in the car · Always have warm water, don't give the child cold drinks 🎁 Small things to experience with your kids · Let your child name the stone peaks · Pick up a few small stones by the lake to take home and put on the windowsill · Learn two Tibetan greetings from Tibetan children · Take a front-facing photo of your child with your camera to compare their height when you get home · Count the stars together in the county town at night and tell stories about the Milky Way 🍜 What can kids eat · Tibetan noodle soup: Broth is rich, noodles are soft, kids usually like it · Potato stewed beef: Stewed until tender, goes well with rice · Butter milk tea: Kids like the sweet version · Highland barley cake: Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, easy to hold and eat · Yogurt with sugar: The "happy water" for kids There are few choices around the scenic area, so you can bring some food they usually eat. 🚗 Transportation arrangements · Fly to Chengdu, then charter a car for a self-drive trip, about 8–10 hours to Aba County · You can also take a bus from Chengdu to Maerkang and then transfer · There is a parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area; transfer to a sightseeing bus to enter · It is recommended to stay in Aba County town; the altitude is lower than the scenic area, so children sleep more soundly · The drive is long, so prepare cartoons and small board games · Stop every two hours to let the kids get out and run around · There are many winding mountain roads; if your child gets carsick, apply a patch behind their ears in advance · The sightseeing bus ride is 20 minutes one way; kids get carsick easily on winding roads, so have them sit in the front row 💰 Costs · Admission + sightseeing bus is about 120 yuan per person, half-price for children · County town hotel 300–500 yuan per night · About 2,500–3,500 yuan for a family of three for three days · Oxygen canister 20 yuan per can, prepare two cans · Horse riding experience 80 yuan per loop, kids love it · Tibetan home visit 50 yuan per person, drink milk tea and watch singing and dancing · Snacks and water on the road 100 yuan · Chartering a car from Chengdu for three days is about 1,500 yuan per car ⚠️ Parenting tips · Don't shower or run around on the first day, let your body adapt · If the child says they have a headache, stop and rest immediately, don't push it · Walking slowly at high altitude and being out of breath is normal · There are few toilets in the scenic area, use the restroom before getting on the bus · Do not let children approach the lake alone, the stones by the water are slippery · Tell your child stories about the sacred mountain to increase their engagement · Don't plan long-distance travel on the return day, leave a buffer 🎒 Kid's carry-on bag · Fever patches: For emergency fever on the plateau · Stomach soothing tablets: For altitude/climate adjustment · Band-aids: For blisters from the boardwalk · Lip balm: The plateau is dry · Children's sunscreen · Mosquito repellent: There are biting insects in the meadows · Thermometer: Digital one · Snacks the child usually eats · Cartoons downloaded for the road · Small picture books and coloring books · Wet wipes and hand sanitizer · The child's usual water bottle · Small blanket for sleeping in the car · Snacks the child loves · Wet wipes for cleaning hands and mouth · Band-aids, spare for blisters 💬 Conclusion: Taking kids to the plateau isn't easy, but when your child turns back and says, "Mom, look, that mountain looks like a castle," you'll feel that all the hassle was worth it. The stone mountains don't speak, but they leave imagination to every child who looks up at them. Walk slowly, don't rush.

The 3-day, 2-night Western Sichuan Grand Loop is only suitable for those who want to efficiently check off core attractions and can handle 5 hours of driving per day. If you want an in-depth tour, please add more days, otherwise you'll be rushing the entire time. 🚗 Day 1: Chengdu → Kangding → Xinduqiao Depart from Chengdu at 7:00 AM, take the Yakang Expressway, and arrive in Kangding in about 4 hours. For lunch, try the yak beef soup pot in the old town of Kangding, costing about CNY 50 per person. Stop to take photos when crossing Zheduo Mountain, which is at an altitude of 4,298 meters; walk slowly when you get out of the car. Arrive in Xinduqiao in the afternoon and stay in Waze Township or the town center; Tibetan-style homestays cost CNY 150–300 in the off-season. In the evening, try your luck at the Gongga Viewing Platform to catch the sunset. On this day, the altitude rises from 500 meters to 3,400 meters; avoid washing your hair and go to bed early. 🏔️ Day 2: Xinduqiao → Tagong → Moshi Park → Seda Depart at 7:30 AM. First, head to Tagong Grassland to see Yala Snow Mountain; the golden roof of Muya Grand Temple against the snow-capped mountains makes for great photos. Arrive at Moshi Park at 10:00 AM; please check official sources for the latest admission ticket and sightseeing vehicle prices. Spend 1.5 hours exploring the exotic stone forest. After lunch, head towards Seda via Luhuo, a drive of about 4 hours. Arrive in Seda before 5:00 PM and stay in the county town or Luoruo Town. Luoruo Town is closer to the Buddhist Institute but has simpler accommodations. Note: The visitation policy for the Buddhist Institute changes frequently; you must check official channels in advance and do not trust roadside guides. Wear a thick jacket for the night view. 🛕 Day 3: Seda → Maerkang → Chengdu If the Buddhist Institute is open, go to the Mandala early in the morning to spin the prayer wheels and watch the sunrise hit the red houses. Depart at 9:00 AM for the return trip, taking National Highway 317 through Maerkang; have Tibetan or Sichuan cuisine for lunch. Afterward, take the Wenma Expressway back to Chengdu. The total journey is about 7 hours, arriving before 8:00 PM. If the Buddhist Institute is not open, head back directly and you can stop by Miyaluo or Gu'ergou for a hot spring soak to relieve fatigue. 🏠 Accommodation advice: Stay in Xinduqiao for the first night, Seda county town for the second night, and return to Chengdu for the third night. Do not stay in Tagong or Bamei, otherwise the trip to Seda on the second day will be even more rushed. ⚠️ Travel tips: First, do not believe claims of "completing Daocheng Yading + Seda in 3 days," as the routes conflict. Second, altitude sickness varies from person to person; prepare glucose, ibuprofen, and oxygen canisters, and descend immediately if symptoms are severe. Third, fill up your gas tank in Xinduqiao, Luhuo, and Maerkang, as gas stations are far apart in between. Fourth, there are many speed limit zones and sections prone to falling rocks, so avoid driving at night. Physical adjustment: If you are tired on the second day, skip Moshi Park and go directly to Seda. If you need to catch a flight on the third day, take the route via Maerkang → Chengdu and do not detour through Danba. Please refer to the latest official information for all admission tickets, opening hours, and traffic controls.

Escape the hustle and bustle of the world and head to Barkam, Aba. High above the clouds on Mount Changlie, have a gentle encounter with a millennial ancient temple. Hidden in the mountains of western Sichuan, this secret, ancient temple is neither ostentatious nor noisy. With its mountain serenity and Zen spirit, it welcomes every seeker who comes in search of their heart. The winding mountain road leads upward, taking you further away from the noise of the world with every step. Clouds and mist are the most dynamic filter for Changlie Temple. On sunny days, the red walls and golden roofs are clear and striking, gazing out at the distant snow-capped mountains across the vast, clear landscape. On rainy days, thin mist wraps around the mountains, and the temple hides in the sea of clouds, creating a hazy, ethereal scene as if a celestial palace has descended to earth. Over eight hundred years have passed, and this ancient temple stands quietly on the summit, witnessing the changing seasons and the flow of human life, its original intention unchanged, as serene as ever. Walk deep into the temple, and you will find devotion and craftsmanship everywhere. The solemn and majestic main hall houses a rich and precious collection of scriptures. The texts, hand-printed by the Derge Parkhang, carry the wise maxims of past masters and embody a profound Tibetan cultural heritage. Inside the hall, the scent of incense lingers, and the fragrance of yak butter fills the air. Standing silently with hands pressed together, your restless heart instantly finds peace. True practice is never about deliberate enlightenment; it is about being in a pure place, learning to let go, and embracing equanimity. The long corridors stretch on, and the prayer wheels turn. The wishes and devotion of countless believers are hidden within this ceaseless rotation. Here, there is no hurried "checking in," only time that slows down. Listen to the Buddhist chants lingering in the air, hear the wind carrying the spirit of Zen, and watch the light and shadow fall upon the red walls and dark tiles—gentle, lingering, and timeless. Beyond its rich Buddhist heritage, this is also a place of original aspiration that holds a "red" warmth. As a patriotic revolutionary base in Aba, this millennial ancient temple not only carries faith and culture but also continues the revolutionary spirit, giving this landscape both the gentleness of Zen and the profound weight of patriotism. At dusk, the evening breeze gently blows, and the sea of clouds gradually returns to serenity. As you head back down the mountain, looking back at the ancient temple in the clouds, the golden roof still shines brightly. In the hustle and bustle of life, we all need such a pure place to rest our body and mind. The beauty of Changlie Temple lies not in the ultimate scenery, but in this peace far from the noise of the world, and in the gentle Zen spirit hidden in the mountains and seas, blended into the passage of time. A journey to the summit, a homecoming for the soul. From now on, in the ordinary life, may you always keep a pure heart, living up to the mountains and rivers, and living up to your original intention.

The entire plateau looks like an overturned palette—once you arrive, you won't want to leave. 🏛️ Top 5 must-visit attractions in Aba · Jiuzhaigou: A World Natural Heritage site. The saying "Once you've seen the waters of Jiuzhaigou, no other water compares" is no exaggeration. Shuangqiao Valley is the most well-developed area; you can enjoy the red birch forests and Potala Peak by taking a sightseeing bus. The Maobiliang viewing platform is the best spot to capture the Yaomei Peak. · Bipenggou: Known as the "Little Switzerland of Western Sichuan." From mid-to-late October, the 80-li colorful forest spreads from the foot of the mountain to the summit. Panyang Lake is surrounded by colorful forests, and at Yanziyanwo, you can look up at the snow-capped mountains. It is a hiking route certified by National Geographic. · Dagu Glacier: The lowest-altitude modern glacier in the world. Take the world's highest passenger cable car directly to the 4,860-meter viewing platform. With billion-year-old ice and snow beneath your feet, you can enjoy a hot drink at the "world's highest cafe" while watching the sea of clouds—it's incredibly healing. 🗺️ Two classic route recommendations · Route 1: Classic Autumn Colors Loop (essential highlights): Chengdu → Bipenggou (colorful forests + Panyang Lake) → Heishui (overnight) → Dagu Glacier (summit by cable car) → Jiuzhaigou Entrance (overnight) → Jiuzhaigou (full-day in-depth tour) → Huanglong (calcified colorful pools) → Return to Chengdu. Suitable for 4–5 days to see all the autumn highlights. · Route 2: Snow Mountain, Grassland, and Culture Route (in-depth tour): Chengdu → Mount Siguniang Shuangqiao Valley → Xiaojin/Danba → Jinchuan (fairyland pear orchard autumn colors) → Maerkang (Zhuokeji Tusi Official Residence) → Hongyuan/Ruoergai (sunset at the First Bend of the Yellow River) → Return to Chengdu. Suitable for 5–7 days, blending culture and nature at a slower pace. 🍜 Local food recommendations · Soul food (meat dishes): Yak meat soup dumplings (thin skin, bursting with juice in every bite), Nine-Bend cumin lamb chops (Ruoergai Tibetan sheep, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with no gamey taste), and yak meat hot pot (medicinal value from the plateau, warming and helps with altitude sickness). · Tibetan and Qiang flavors: Butter tea + tsampa (a Tibetan staple, warms you up and helps with altitude sickness), potato mochi (a Qiang specialty, boiled in pickled vegetable soup), and Tibetan-style hot pot (yak meat with vegetables, the top choice for warding off the cold). · Snacks and drinks: Yak yogurt (rich and creamy), highland barley wine/za wine (homemade by the Qiang people), and roasted potatoes (plateau potatoes are exceptionally fragrant). 🚗 Transportation and practical planning · Transportation: The Chuanqing Railway is now open. It takes about 2.5 hours from Chengdu to Songpan and about 3.5 hours to Jiuzhaigou, so you can say goodbye to bumpy mountain roads. For self-driving, take the Wenma Expressway and Jiumian Expressway; it takes about 3 hours and 4 hours from Chengdu to Maerkang and Jiuzhaigou, respectively. The Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport has flights from many cities, and you can rent a car upon arrival. There are over 50 scenic shuttle bus routes within the prefecture, and you can "pick up a rental car upon arrival and return it at a different location" at airports and high-speed railway stations. · Planning advice: Day 1: Chengdu → Bipenggou → Heishui; Day 2: Dagu Glacier → Jiuzhaigou Entrance; Day 3: Full day in Jiuzhaigou; Day 4: Huanglong → Return to Chengdu (4-day essential route). If you have more time, add Mount Siguniang + Jinchuan + Maerkang to extend the trip to 6–7 days. For accommodation, choose Zhangzha Town at the valley entrance (Jiuzhaigou) or Tibetan-style homestays in Mount Siguniang Town. · Practical tips: The altitude is 3,000–4,860 meters. Avoid strenuous exercise. Prepare Rhodiola, glucose, and portable oxygen canisters in advance. Dress in layers (thermal underwear + sweater + windbreaker/light down jacket). Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. Jiuzhaigou and Mount Siguniang require advance online real-name booking (via the Aba Tourism official WeChat account). ☀️ Best time to visit Mid-October to mid-November is the peak window for autumn colors in Aba. Before October 15, the landscape is in transition between green and yellow. From October 15–November 15, the colorful mountain scenery is at its most vibrant. After November 15, heavy snow arrives, marking the end of autumn. After November 16, Jiuzhaigou enters the off-season, with admission dropping to CNY 80, offering fewer crowds and beautiful scenery.

Just got back from Seda! Honestly: the journey was grueling, but the scenery was truly soul-healing 😭! Altitude sickness, long travel times, and basic accommodations made the whole trip a bit of an ordeal. But the red houses covering the mountains, the starry sky, and the pure atmosphere of faith—once you've seen it, you'll never forget it. It's so hard to leave! 1️⃣ Travel experience Seda is the purest secret realm of faith in Western Sichuan! September–October is crisp and clear, with lots of sunny days and clear views. The red monk houses covering the mountains are stunning, and the night sky is beautiful, far from the city's hustle and bustle. Perfect for those who love healing, slow travel and want to clear their minds. The downside is that high-altitude travel is tough, testing both your physical stamina and mindset. 2️⃣ Total budget (3 days 2 nights per person | excluding round-trip transportation) Total cost: CNY 520 Two nights' accommodation: CNY 180 | Three meals: CNY 160 | Local transportation: CNY 90 | Miscellaneous/tickets: CNY 90 3️⃣🚗 Transportation routes Most people go to Ma'erkang first, then carpool to Seda. One-way carpool is CNY 60, with many winding mountain roads. There is no high-speed rail locally, and attractions are scattered. The sightseeing bus at the Buddhist Institute is a must, costing CNY 48 round trip. Short-distance carpools within the city start at CNY 10. Traveling at night is not recommended due to heavy fog and complex road conditions. 4️⃣🏨 Accommodation areas ▪ Seda County 🔥 CNY 90–120/night Altitude is slightly more manageable, with plenty of shops and restaurants. Some places have oxygen supply. Best choice if you're worried about altitude sickness. Best value. ▪ Luoruo Town area CNY 100–140/night Close to the Buddhist Institute distribution center, walkable to the station, saving travel time. Facilities are simple. ▪ Larung Gar Buddhist Institute CNY 80–110/night Immersive view of the red houses at night. Conditions are basic with no elevator. Seda Starry Sky Viewing Platform CNY 0 🌌 | No light pollution at night, the starry sky is absolutely beautiful. 7️⃣❌ Tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Seda is at a high altitude. Do not exercise vigorously, shower, or wash your hair, as this can easily worsen altitude sickness. 2. The Buddhist Institute has daily visitor limits. You must book in advance. There are basically no spots available on-site, so don't show up without a booking. 3. Mountain roads cause motion sickness easily. Prepare medication in advance. The journey takes a long time, so keep a calm mindset. 4. There is no excessive commercial consumption in the scenic area. Don't trust roadside offers for low-priced guides or prayer services. 8️⃣💡 Travel tips The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Bring a thick jacket, a thermos, and sun/wind protection gear. Mild headaches and shortness of breath are normal altitude sickness symptoms. Slow down your pace and rest more. The whole trip is about slow travel and meditation. Don't rush; immerse yourself in the gentleness of the Tibetan region. 9️⃣✨ Final thoughts Although the journey was rough and altitude sickness was uncomfortable—the whole trip was truly an "ordeal" 💫! But the purity, tranquility, and healing feeling of Seda cannot be replaced by any internet-famous scenic spot. Having seen the red houses covering the mountains and the brilliant starry sky, all the fatigue was worth it. You must visit Seda once in your life to experience the ultimate faith and gentleness!
