Ci County travel guide and discussion

A short drive of just over 20 kilometres from Linzhang brings you to one of northern China's most underrated museums. The Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum showcases artifacts excavated from the imperial mausoleums of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties. More than 130 royal tombs once lay across this region, making it one of the most significant archaeological landscapes of the Northern Dynasties. There is, however, a sense of bittersweetness throughout the galleries. Most excavations took place in the 1980s, when archaeological techniques and conservation methods were far less advanced than today. Some treasures had already been looted and dispersed overseas, others were damaged, while many of the finest discoveries were transferred to provincial museums. Even parts of the original excavation sites no longer survive. What remains here is only a portion of a much larger story—but it is no less compelling. The museum itself is impressively modern. Its exhibition design is elegant and well planned, drawing inspiration from the Datong Museum while embracing the distinctive aesthetic of the Xianbei people. Step inside and you're surrounded by motifs inspired by the northern grasslands, Silk Road exchanges, and the unique cultural fusion that defined the Northern Dynasties. 📍 Location: Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, Cixian, Hebei, China 🏛️ Highlight: Imperial tomb discoveries from the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties ✨ Feature: Royal burial artifacts, Xianbei culture, Silk Road influences, immersive exhibition design, and Northern Dynasties history 🍃 Atmosphere: Modern, immersive, and quietly reflective 📸 Best for: Archaeology enthusiasts, Northern Dynasties history, museum lovers, and cultural heritage exploration 💡 Travel Tip: Pair your visit with nearby archaeological sites to better appreciate the historical significance of this remarkable region. ✨ Signature feeling: Standing before the surviving relics of a vanished empire, imagining the treasures that time—and history—have carried elsewhere. Not every masterpiece survives intact, but every surviving artifact still has a story worth telling. 🏛️✨

Ancient Wudang Mountain: Seeking the Immortal Trail Between the Galaxy and the Sea of Clouds Heading northwest from Wuan, the car plunges deep into the Taihang Mountains. Ancient Wudang Mountain is hidden in the time folds of the southern Taihang Mountains in Hebei, locally called Laoye Mountain, which sounds warm and familiar, like an elderly neighbor. Starting from downtown Handan, it’s about seventy kilometers away—not too far, but not close either. The winding mountain roads block out the hustle and bustle of the world behind. Getting off in front of the mountain gate, you look up to see five peaks facing each other, each topped with a temple, piercing the sky. The scenic area covers more than twenty square kilometers and is both a national geological park and a national forest park. According to records, the main peak is 1,437 meters above sea level. Standing at the foot of the mountain looking up, those peaks seem to pierce the clouds like five silent old men. There are several hiking trails, and I chose the simplest one—the Taizi Slope hiking trail. The stone steps wind all the way up. Proud of my fitness, I soon felt my legs weaken. I rested twice along the way and saw snack stalls by the path—grilled sausages for three yuan each, and hiking sticks surprisingly only five yuan. I bought a stick to steady myself and regained some confidence. The scenery along the way was pleasant: oak trees stood tall on the northern mountain, while pine and cypress covered the southern mountain like a sea. Walking through the forest, the mountain breeze carried the fresh scent of pine needles and earth. Turning a bend, I spotted a stone statue in the distance—that was a statue of Laozi, standing quietly on the mountainside, his beard and hair flowing, exuding a mystical aura. After about an hour and a half, I reached the South Heavenly Gate. It’s a simple stone gate, towering and majestic, as if separating the mortal world from the fairyland. Passing through the gate, the mountain wind hit my face. Looking back, the endless Taihang mountain range unfolded in layers. At that moment, I truly felt like I had stepped into the clouds. Going further up, I arrived at Laoye Peak, also known as the Golden Summit. The ancient temple at the summit, with red walls and black tiles, was originally built during the Sui dynasty and rebuilt in the Tang dynasty. Inside the temple is the statue of Zhenwu Emperor, with incense smoke curling upward. Legend says Zhenwu Emperor was the third prince of the Jade Emperor. Dissatisfied with the foolish Sui Emperor Yang, he wandered here, built a hut, practiced cultivation for over forty years, and attained immortality. Locals call this temple “Laoye Temple,” saying “The god sits inside the temple, the temple walks among the clouds.” Standing here and looking far, the mountains and clouds stretch endlessly, the Taihang Mountains winding like a giant dragon. The most magical thing on the summit isn’t the temple, but the Sky-High Immortal Bridge connecting Laoye Peak and Nainai Peak. This 150-meter-long suspension bridge spans the two peaks, hanging high in the air. The bridge sways gently with the wind, and beneath is a bottomless gorge surrounded by a sea of rolling clouds. Locals have a saying: “People cross the bridge, their souls fly in the sky; if not immortals, better than immortals.” Holding onto the iron chains, I walked forward, feeling the emptiness beneath my feet and the howling mountain wind, my heart pounding in my throat. Reaching the middle of the bridge, whether from the wind or weak legs, I swayed unsteadily. A few young people behind me were braver, posing and taking photos on the bridge. I quickly steadied the chains, thinking this old body better get across quickly. I had planned to wait for sunrise at the summit, but fog rolled in at dusk, and the clouds were thick. It seemed unlikely I’d see it tomorrow. Descending as night fell, the night tour lights at the foot of the mountain were already on—mystical forests, ocean worlds, Wudang legends, all dazzling with colors, as if entering another world. Just as I was feeling regretful, distant bell chimes suddenly rang out, deep and slow, echoing through the night and mountains. The bell echoed in the valley for a long time, like a response, or a farewell. Coming down the mountain and looking back, Ancient Wudang Mountain was already hidden in the night, with only scattered lights faintly visible. This mountain’s history predates the southern Wudang Mountain, with temples built since the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is the elder brother in the “Northern Brother, Southern Brother” pair. For thousands of years, Zhenwu Emperor has sat on the Golden Summit, and Tai Chi master Zhang Sanfeng has attained enlightenment here. And I am just a passerby who came at dusk and left at night. Though the bell has faded, the mountain wind, clouds, ancient steles, and the nervousness on the bridge have all become echoes in my heart. Some places are enough to visit once; some places, once visited, stay forever in dreams.

Xiaojing Mausoleum, also known as "Tianzi Zhong" (Emperor's Tomb), is located on a hillside southeast of Qiangang Village, Jiangwucheng Town, Ci County, Hebei Province. It is one of the tombs in the Northern Dynasties tomb complex and serves as the final resting place of Emperor Xiaojing of Eastern Wei, Yuan Shanjian. The existing burial mound is over 50 meters high and over 120 meters in diameter, making it the largest surviving imperial tomb from the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi periods. Tomb occupant: Yuan Shanjian (524–552). He was the great-grandson of Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei (Yuan Hong) and the last emperor of the Eastern Wei, reigning for 16 years. Although talented in both literature and martial arts, he was a puppet of the powerful Gao family. In 550, he was forced to abdicate to Gao Yang, marking the end of the Eastern Wei. In 552 (the second year of the Tianbao era), he was poisoned by Gao Yang at the age of 28. The following year, he was buried with imperial honors at the Ye West Mausoleum, which is today's Xiaojing Mausoleum. Today, more than 10 replica ancient buildings, including the Jade Emperor Hall, the Goddess Temple, and the Guanyin Pavilion, have been built on the top and sides of the burial mound. The railings on the steps are carved with patterns in the style of the Eastern Wei, creating a unique landscape that blends historical mausoleum features with folk worship. Additionally, there is the water sound staircase wonder. In 1994, a 109-step blue brick staircase was built on the north side of the burial mound, measuring 23.9 meters high and 5 meters wide. When walking on the steps, visitors can hear a crisp "ding-dong" sound like running water, yet no water is visible. This acoustic phenomenon is caused by the unique construction of the steps and is the most famous feature of Xiaojing Mausoleum. It is currently a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. ------------------------- Opening hours: Open all year round. Admission: 10 yuan. Transportation: (For reference) Bus: From Ci County town: Take the shuttle bus to Jiangwucheng Town, get off at Dongcaozhuang Village, and walk west to Qiangang Village. Honestly, the wooden architecture left to us by the Tang Dynasty is incredibly scarce—there are only 3.75 in the entire country 🏛️ I've already visited 2.5 of them, and the rest are in Yuncheng and Dunhuang. I'll keep you in suspense for now~ I recently visited the original Nanchansi, and it truly amazed me ✨ To be honest, this is a treasure that Mr. Liang Sicheng missed back in the day. It wasn't even recorded in the county annals in time and was only discovered after 1949. The level of sophistication is top-tier. The robust momentum of the Tang Dynasty dougong (bracket sets) supporting the massive roof, with space for Buddha statues of all sizes—it truly embodies the grandeur of a great nation! In contrast, the small, painted dougong of the Ming and Qing dynasties have been reduced to mere decoration—conservative and cramped, with a stingy vibe. It's just a pity 🤷 📝 Fun fact: Here is the breakdown of the 3.75 sites 👇 ✅ Foguang Temple East Hall, Xinzhou ✅ Nanchansi Main Hall, Xinzhou ✅ Guangrenwang Temple, Ruicheng County, Yuncheng 🔸 Half: Lower level of the Bell Tower at Kaiyuan Temple, Zhengding County 🔸 0.25: Cave eave of Mogao Cave 196 After seeing these early examples and looking at today's architecture, one word comes to mind: iteration 🔄 From thatched cottages to the golden age of the Tang Dynasty, the people on this land have constantly created and been shaped, spiraling upward to where we are today. By the way, I usually stay in hotels when I travel. Over the years, I've felt the iteration and upgrade of the accommodation experience—from the first generation of standardization to today's smarter, more detail-oriented designs. It's quite interesting~ I've also been listening to the book "In the World" recently, and a passage really moved me: "China was once qualified to be called China because it mastered the most advanced technology; in history, some people from the Xiongnu and Mongol empires, which were once foreign worlds, also wanted to integrate into China; and those forces that set out from China to embrace and absorb the world eventually gave back to this land, making it a better China." This makes me want to recommend a few lesser-known museums: Taosi Civilization Museum, Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum, Yecheng Archaeological Museum, Jin State Museum, and Jiexiu Museum. They are all worth visiting 🏛️ 📸 Photos 1–4 are of Nanchansi, and 5–9 are of Yanqing Temple (located 6 km north of Nanchansi; founded in the Tang Dynasty, the current structure is from the Jin Dynasty)

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is located in Kansas City, in the central United States. Nelson's collection of Chinese art, exceeding 7,000 pieces, is one of the most important collections of Chinese paintings outside of Asia. Buddhism was introduced to China around the 1st century AD and flourished rapidly during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Nelson's collection of Buddhist sculptures spans from approximately the 5th to the 18th centuries. ➡️Water-Moon Guanyin (South Sea Guanyin) Currently housed in the renowned Chinese Temple Gallery (Gallery 230), this approximately 2.4-meter-tall Guanyin is hailed as the "most beautiful Water-Moon Guanyin," and the museum also describes it as "one of the most outstanding sculptures of its kind outside of China." Liao and Jin dynasty wood carvings, Yuan dynasty murals (from Guangsheng Temple in Hongdong, Shanxi), and Ming dynasty caisson ceilings—these elements, transcending time and space, converge here. ➡️Liao Dynasty Tricolor Glazed Pottery Arhats In the early 20th century, a group of enormous terracotta Arhat sculptures was discovered near Yi County, Hebei Province. Originally, there may have been sixteen Arhats, but they were later scattered throughout the world. Only a few original pieces can be reliably identified today, housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Boston, Nelson-Atkins University, the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the British Museum in London, the Guimet Museum in Paris, the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, and Japan, among other places. The Nelson-Atkins piece is complete, with its original head, making it a particularly valuable example. ➡️Northern Song Dynasty Cizhou Ware Dragon Vase The white background features a black dragon, but it wasn't painted on; rather, the dragon's image was carved using black slip and a tool, resulting in very vigorous lines and a particularly majestic dragon. Cizhou ware wasn't an official kiln, yet it could produce dragon motifs? Research revealed that the close connection between dragon motifs and imperial power only emerged after the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, dragon and phoenix patterns were widely used on folk artifacts without restriction. The county of Julu, where it was unearthed, experienced a severe flood at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty. Many houses and artifacts were quickly buried by silt; therefore, it wasn't part of a tomb but rather a remnant of Song Dynasty life buried in mud. ➡️Eastern Zhou Dynasty Dragon-Patterned Jade Bi (Disc) Material is nephrite, a type of jade similar to Hetian jade, and approximately 16.5 cm in diameter. The "bi" was a very important ritual jade artifact in ancient China. This piece is beautifully shaped and exquisitely crafted. ➡️Artifact of Unknown Purpose The name simply says "unknown," and the materials are metal and glass. A quick search reveals that artificial glass existed in China as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, and even earlier in West Asia, dating back to 2000 BC—our ancestors were truly full of surprises! 🏛️ Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Visitor Information: 🎫 Admission: Free! General admission is free, but reservations are required. 🚗 Parking Museum parking garage, $20/time. Located on the west side of the museum, on Oak Street. Transportation nearby is convenient; you can take the free streetcar or a taxi. ⚠️Opening Hours Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays‼ 🍴 Can I eat inside? Yes. Rozzelle Court Restaurant is located on the first floor of the old Atkins Building, near Kirkwood Hall. Its biggest feature is its ambiance—a beautiful space reminiscent of a 15th-century Italian courtyard. They offer salads, sandwiches, and other light meals at reasonable prices. The sandwiches with the badminton logo are their signature sandwiches; the portions are quite large and perfect for sharing.

Handan, a city that has been waiting for you for 3,000 years. It’s not just Baoding, Zhengding, and Datong that are ancient capitals—Handan is the "Capital of Idioms." "Walking in Handan," "carrying thorns and pleading for punishment," and "wearing Hu-style clothes and shooting arrows"—they all originated here. 🌊 Lakeside in Southern Hebei, a sunset destination | Yiquan Lake Scenic Area travel guide 📍Location: Ci County, Handan City. A large lake at the source of the Fuyang River and a national water conservancy scenic area. A 19.6 km ecological corridor stretches around the lake. It is both a leisure backyard for locals and an ecological wetland for migratory birds. With autumn sunsets, winter migratory birds, and spring/summer reeds, the scenery changes with the seasons. ⏰Opening hours: Open all day for free; the lakeside trail is accessible at any time. Yanyu Pavilion, viewing platforms, and other areas are best experienced during the day. To see the "orange sea" sunset, we recommend arriving in the evening. For winter birdwatching, try to arrive early in the morning. 🚗Transportation guide For self-driving, navigate to Yiquan Lake Scenic Area; there is a parking lot at the main scenic area. It takes about 40 mins to drive from downtown Handan, and road conditions are good. The lake is large, so walking the entire perimeter is not recommended. You can bring your own bike or rent an e-bike or tandem bike by the lake for a leisurely ride. For public transport, you can take a bus to the Ci County seat and then take a taxi to the scenic area. There is no direct bus, so driving is the most convenient option. 🎫Ticket information The main entrance and lakeside trails are free, and no reservation is required. Sightseeing cars, lakeside e-bikes, water activities, and camping equipment rentals are optional paid services; choose as needed, with no forced consumption. 🌟Key highlights Yiquan Lake has a vast, open water surface. When the wind blows, the water ripples, and large reed beds along the shore sway in the breeze. Every step offers a relaxing lakeside atmosphere. The ecological green corridor around the lake is the soul of the scenic area. The long wooden boardwalk hugs the shoreline, with the vast lake on one side and lush wetlands on the other. It is perfect for cycling and walking. There are many viewing platforms and pavilions along the way, so you can stop to enjoy the breeze and lake views whenever you get tired. Yanyu Pavilion has a unique design and is a landmark building by the lake. Surrounded by fields of flowers and open lawns, it is a great place to pitch a tent for camping. You can enjoy a lakeside camping experience without traveling far, and many families come here for picnics and relaxation. The popular floating bridge in Beiguo Village is a must-visit spot. The long bridge floats on the lake, making you feel like you are walking on water as it ripples beneath your feet, offering expansive views. The appearance of the bridge changes with the water level, and it looks great in photos when the water level is just right. The lakeside road in Xujia Village is known as Handan's version of "Torch Eight Street." The road slopes down toward the lake, and on sunny days, with backlighting, it looks like it leads straight into the blue waves, creating a perfect atmosphere. Many photography enthusiasts come here specifically to capture photos of the road and the lake together. The sunset is Yiquan Lake's trump card, and the west side of the lake is the best spot to view it. As the sun slowly sets, the lake is covered in a layer of warm golden light—what people often call an "orange sea." The sky transitions from golden yellow to pinkish-purple, making it easy to take atmospheric photos. From November to March each year, tens of thousands of migratory birds, such as wild geese and swans, fly here to spend the winter. The lake and mudflats are filled with birds, and the sight of them circling and landing is spectacular. It is a well-known birdwatching spot in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Remember to bring a telephoto lens for birdwatching, and do not get too close or disturb the water birds. In spring and summer, the reed beds are lush and green, with waves of reeds swaying in the wind. When the water level recedes in summer, parts of the lakebed are exposed, forming open grassy beaches with a unique, wild prairie landscape that is perfect for "wild-style" photography. There are also sandy areas by the lake where you can wade in the shallows. Water activities like speedboats and kayaking are available, and windmills along the shore add a unique touch to the scenery. 🗺️Recommended routes Leisurely lakeside route Visitor Center → Stroll along the lakeside wooden boardwalk → Short stop at Yanyu Pavilion's flower fields and lawn → Cycle along the lakeside road and visit the popular Xujia Village road → Head to the west bank to wait for the stunning Yiquan Lake sunset. The whole trip takes 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace, perfect for unwinding. Panoramic route Main scenic area → Yanyu Pavilion → Lakeside green corridor → Beiguo Village floating bridge → West bank sunset spot. Try to set aside most of the day to visit most of the popular spots at Yiquan Lake. Migratory bird route Depart early on a winter morning and head straight to the west side wetland mudflats. Wait quietly for the birds to take flight and circle. When birdwatching and photographing, remember to keep a safe distance and do not disturb the birds' habitat. 💡Practical tips🍃 The lakeside route is very long, and walking is physically demanding, so cycling or using an e-bike is preferred. It is often windy by the lake, even on sunny days, and there is a significant temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring a light jacket. The visual effect of the popular floating bridge and road is greatly affected by the water level; the scenery differs during flood and dry seasons, so keep your expectations realistic. When birdwatching, do not approach, feed, or chase the migratory birds; protect the wetland ecology. You can bring your own camping equipment, but please take all your trash with you and care for the lakeside environment. The lakeside boardwalks and mudflats can be slippery; do not climb over railings for photos and stay away from deep water areas. The lakeside can be crowded on holidays; if you want to watch the sunset in peace, try to avoid peak hours. You don't need to travel to a distant seaside. At Yiquan Lake in Ci County, Handan, you can stroll along the long lakeshore, feel the lake breeze, wait for a gentle sunset over the water, encounter birds and reeds, and enjoy a relaxing, carefree time by the lake.

Step into the "Tokyo Dream Splendor: Song and Jin Dynasties (Part 1)" exhibition hall on the second floor of the Kaifeng Museum, where the "Convergence of Famous Porcelain" section stands out as the most brilliant highlight of the entire Song and Jin exhibition area. Relying on the backdrop of the prosperous handicraft and trade industries of the Northern Song Dynasty capital, this section centers on the Kaifeng Museum's top treasure—the Song Dynasty Jun ware rose-purple kiln-transmutation glazed bowl—connecting the major famous kiln systems of the Song Dynasty to fully showcase the peak standards of Northern Song porcelain craftsmanship and the aesthetics of the era. The absolute centerpiece of the entire area is this Song Jun ware rose-purple kiln-transmutation glazed bowl, which is also the most representative national treasure-level artifact among the museum's porcelain collection. Unearthed from the Bacun kiln site in Yuzhou, it perfectly interprets the legendary reputation that "Jun porcelain with red splashes is worth a fortune." The greatest charm of Jun porcelain lies in its natural kiln transmutation, without artificial painting. This bowl features a warm and steady sky-blue base, with the glaze naturally suffused with large, rich layers of rose-purple splashes. The colors blend and flow, creating a sense of depth and fluidity, with textures that possess a naturally flowing quality. [○] Using this museum-treasured Jun porcelain as the visual thread, the exhibition hall further unfolds the grand landscape of Song Dynasty famous porcelain, concentrating on displaying artifacts from major mainstream kilns of the north and south, intuitively presenting the prosperous handicraft era of the "ten thousand kilns competing" in the great Song Dynasty. Ru ware, the first of the five great kilns of the Song Dynasty, is represented in the exhibition by specimens and fragments that fully display the minimalist Song charm. The glaze color is the classic "sky blue after rain," warm and jade-like, delicate and lustrous, with fine and natural crackles. The vessel shapes are elegant and restrained, without excessive decoration, representing the highest aesthetic standard of the Song royal court—refined, introverted, and possessing a lingering charm. Ding ware is the benchmark for Song Dynasty white porcelain, known for its clean, warm white glaze and lightweight, sturdy body. The exhibits are mostly plain and elegant, with incised floral patterns that are sharp and lively, clean and pleasing to the eye. Ding ware artifacts combine beauty with practicality and were the most widely used famous kiln porcelain by both the Song imperial court and the general public. Yaozhou ware, as a representative of northern celadon, is famous for its exquisite carved patterns. The celadon glaze is clear and transparent with a jade-green tint, and the carving technique is vigorous and fluid. The floral and water-wave patterns are layered and three-dimensional, vivid and lively, representing the highest standard of northern folk celadon craftsmanship in the Song Dynasty. Cizhou ware was the largest and most down-to-earth folk kiln system of the Song Dynasty, featuring a white-ground black-painting style. The painting style is rustic and casual, with themes close to daily life. The bird, flower, figure, and story patterns are vivid and interesting, vividly restoring the daily aesthetics and life atmosphere of the common people in the Northern Song Dynasty. 📍Location: Kaifeng Museum, 2nd Floor, Exhibition Hall 2, Song and Jin Dynasties (Part 1), "Convergence of Famous Porcelain" section ✨Key Highlights: Song Jun ware rose-purple kiln-transmutation glazed bowl (museum treasure), comparison of the five great Song Dynasty kiln systems 💡Visiting Tips: Focus on observing the kiln-transmutation texture of the Jun porcelain, and compare the differences in glaze color and style among the Ru, Guan, Ding, Yaozhou, and Cizhou kilns

Handan isn't exactly a trendy tourist city, but it's known for its name remaining unchanged for 3000 years, making it a true capital of idioms. The attractions are well-distributed, and prices are reasonable, making it ideal for a leisurely weekend or short holiday getaway without rushing. · *Attractions within the City:** The attractions within the city are relatively concentrated, making them quick to explore. Congtai Park is free. The Wuling Congtai within the park is a remnant of King Wuling of Zhao's "Hu-style riding and archery" (a military exercise), a landmark of Handan. A one-hour visit is sufficient. Next to it is the Handan Road Historical and Cultural District, a newly opened cultural and tourism area that connects locations related to idioms like Huiche Lane and Xuebu Bridge. You'll encounter familiar idioms every few steps. The district also has many local snack shops, making it convenient for eating and shopping. · *Handan City Museum:** A national first-class museum, it's also free. Those wanting a quick overview of Handan's history should visit. It has the most exhibits on Zhao culture and Cishan culture, and a visit will take approximately 2-3 hours. Zhao Yuan Park is also free and quite large. It includes an idiom and historical allusion garden with many sculptures recreating stories like "Bearing the Thorns to Plead Guilty" and "The Yellow Millet Dream." It's suitable for families with children, allowing you to explain the stories as you stroll. Nearby Cultural Attractions For cultural attractions, Guangfu Ancient City is a must-see 5A scenic area, about half an hour's drive from the city center. It's the birthplace of Tai Chi, surrounded by water, and its Ming and Qing dynasty city walls are well-preserved. The Yongnian crispy fish is a must-try. Exploring the ancient city will take about half a day, and there's a light show in the evening. Those who appreciate historical stone carvings can visit Xiangtangshan Grottoes, a royal grotto complex from the Northern Qi dynasty. It's one of the largest grotto groups in Hebei, with well-preserved statues. There's also the Cizhou Kiln Museum nearby; porcelain enthusiasts can visit it to see the evolution of Cizhou porcelain with its white background and black decoration. There's also the Wa Huang Palace in Shexian County, a 5A scenic area, where Nuwa (the goddess of the sea) was worshipped. The entire complex hangs on a cliff, connected to the mountain by iron chains, and is known as the "Living Hanging Temple," quite breathtaking. However, it's over an hour's drive from the city center, so it's best to dedicate a whole day to it. Nearby Natural Attractions: If you like natural scenery, you can go to Wu'an. Legend has it that Jingniang Lake is where Zhao Kuangyin escorted Jingniang a thousand miles. The lake meanders, flanked by Danxia landform peaks. Taking a boat trip on the lake is very pleasant, and it's cool in the summer. The East Taihang Scenic Area has a cliffside glass walkway, perfect for thrill-seekers. The nearby Qibugou Valley has waterfalls and canyons, ideal for summer hiking and escaping the heat. The Taihang Wuzhishan Mountains are quite steep, good for mountain climbers. Local Cuisine: Handan's cuisine leans towards northern flavors, with heavy stewing and braising, generous portions, and great value. Breakfast: The most common breakfast for locals is Doumo (豆沫), a savory dish made by grinding millet and soybeans into a paste, adding peanuts, sesame seeds, kelp, and vermicelli, and serving it with an egg pouch (egg-filled fried hollow pancake). It's hot, filling, and you can find delicious options at any long-established shop that's been around for over a decade. Another popular breakfast choice is Nanyancun hand-pulled noodles, made with a broth of mutton and spices, featuring hand-pulled noodles that are chewy and smooth. Lunch/Dinner: Roast chicken is a must-try, made at a century-old brand. The chicken is braised until tender and falls off the bone, with a subtle herbal aroma, and can be enjoyed hot or cold. Cizhou braised pork is also worth trying; minced pork is steamed with starch, sliced, and pan-fried until golden brown on both sides, then dipped in garlic sauce—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Yongnian donkey meat sausage is especially delicious sandwiched in a baked bun. Guangfu's crispy bone fish is also delicious, even the bones are crispy, making it suitable for both the elderly and children. Wu'an pulled noodles are wide, hand-pulled noodles served with donkey meat broth or wild leek blossoms; the portion is generous, and one bowl is enough to fill you up. Weixian's "Big Pot Stew" is a slow-cooked dish of pork, cabbage, vermicelli, and tofu, enough to make you want to eat two bowls of rice. Cheng'an's "Eight Big Bowls" features braised pork and crispy pork, both steamed until tender and flavorful, perfect for group meals. Snacks: Guo Ba's baked buns are layered and crispy, crumbling with every bite, and absolutely delicious with braised meat. Lao Huai Shu's baked flatbread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, savory and fragrant, perfect with porridge. Quzhou's pancake soup is made by tearing mung bean pancakes into pieces and soaking them in pork bone broth, served with fried dough sticks—quite unique. Linzhang's fried blood sausage is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, sprinkled with minced garlic and drizzled with sauce; those who love pig's blood should try it. There's also Handan's local stinky tofu, different from Changsha's—it's white, topped with hot gravy, and has a different flavor; those who dare to try it can give it a go. Travel Tips: City attractions are easily accessible by public transport. For surrounding attractions, driving or joining a day tour is recommended. You don't need to specifically look for trendy restaurants; old shops that have been open for over a decade on the street all have authentic flavors, and you can eat very comfortably for just a few dozen yuan per person.

Many people come to the Three Gorges Museum and head straight to the main history exhibition hall, often overlooking the ceramics section. After visiting the Great Hall of the People, I strolled in here. Instead of just rushing through for a quick photo, I stood quietly in front of the display cases, carefully admiring this collection of ancient ceramics from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. Unlike the luxurious imperial kilns often seen in museums, a large portion of the items here are everyday ceramics produced by folk kilns. The sharp carvings of the Yaozhou kiln and the free-spirited black and white paintings of the Cizhou kiln lack overly refined embellishments, revealing the authentic atmosphere of the daily lives of ordinary people in ancient times. You can see various household utensils from the Cizhou kiln, such as plates and jars. A few simple strokes outline floral sprays, with brushwork that is natural and rustic—these were everyday items for ordinary families 1,000 years ago. On the Yaozhou kiln celadon plates, the layered floral patterns are carved with clean, precise knife work. Even through the glass, you can feel the skilled craftsmanship of the artisans. The biggest surprise was the Yuan dynasty bluish-white glazed ewer with a dragon-shaped handle, unearthed locally in Chongqing. The dragon-shaped handle is lively and dynamic. It is hard to imagine it was a household pot in ancient times. The large Ming dynasty blue and white peony jar features full and grand patterns. There is also a rare Song dynasty pottery stamp mold. I had only seen them in books before, but seeing the real thing, I finally understood how ancient ceramic patterns were mass-produced. Each bowl, jar, and plate once held food or stored items, serving as tangible, everyday objects for people in the past. As time passed, these artifacts remained, allowing us a glimpse into the aesthetic tastes of ordinary people during the Song and Yuan dynasties. ✨Travel tips ▪️Free admission, real-name reservation required via the official WeChat account, closed on Mondays ▪️Located across the square from the Great Hall of the People, perfect to visit both in 1 day ▪️Remember to turn off your flash when photographing exhibits to protect the artifacts ▪️Recommended to set aside 1 hour to slowly explore the ceramics exhibition hall, no need to rush Travel is not just about the streets and scenery. Taking the time to visit a museum is also a great way to understand a city.

The South Xiangtang Temple (Grottoes) is located northwest of Zhifang Village, Linshui Town, Fengfeng Mining District, Handan City, at the southern foot of Gushan Mountain and on the northern bank of the Fuyang River, about 15 kilometers from the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes. The North Xiangtang Grottoes are larger in scale, with carvings that exude a more imperial style. The South Xiangtang Grottoes are smaller (with 7 existing caves) and feature a more delicate and lively style. This site is a strategic pass on the western side of the Fukou Jing, one of the eight ancient passes of the Taihang Mountains, and consists of grottoes, hillside pavilions, temple halls, and ancient pagodas. According to existing Sui Dynasty inscriptions, the South Xiangtang Temple was founded in 565 AD and has a history of over 1,400 years. It was built by Gao Anagong, a sycophantic official of the Northern Qi Dynasty. Historical records indicate that it was built as a detached palace to please the emperor. This is also the Fukou Jing, one of the eight passes of the Taihang Mountains, which served as a vital thoroughfare for travel between the ancient provinces of Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan across the Taihang Mountains, as well as an important strategic pass. The theft and looting of the South Xiangtang Grottoes have been particularly severe. In the Xiangtangshan Grottoes Museum located in front of the South Xiangtangshan Grottoes, the exhibition hall not only displays Buddha heads, hands, and statues but also dedicates a section to recounting the dark history of the theft and loss of artifacts from the Xiangtangshan Grottoes. The South Xiangtang Grottoes currently house over 3,700 statues of various sizes, with 38 inscriptions containing dates, all carved during the Northern Qi Dynasty. Inside and outside the caves, as well as on the nearby rock faces, there are many cliffside statues added during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Although their scale is not as grand as those in the North Xiangtang Grottoes, their small and intricate designs have a unique charm. Built into the mountain in layers, they form a harmonious whole. Despite being repeatedly damaged over the centuries, they have left us with a rich treasure trove. The first cave of the South Xiangtang Grottoes contains the only surviving main Buddha head. In the lower right corner of the pedestal, there is an image of a lion. Lions are common in Northern Dynasty stone carvings; it is said that a lion once carried Sakyamuni Buddha while he preached at the Puguangming (Universal Light) Hall, and later, they were more commonly used as symbols of Buddhist guardians. The main Buddha's halo features blue flame patterns. The blue color is derived from lapis lazuli, which originated in Central Asia and was introduced to China via the Silk Road, making it a very precious pigment in ancient times. Later, due to factors such as reduced production, this mineral blue became difficult to find in grottoes starting from the Tang Dynasty. The Thousand Buddha Cave is the most magnificent, containing 1,028 Buddha statues. The lotus flower and eight flying devas carved in the center of the cave ceiling are unparalleled artistic treasures. The eight flying musical devas, with their light postures and fluid lines, face each other in pairs, circling and dancing. Some are playing the konghou (harp), some are playing the flute, some are plucking the pipa, and others are playing the bamboo sheng. The flying devas dancing to the elegant music are equally mesmerizing. They are not stiff reliefs but are full of movement. The Huayan Cave is the largest of the seven caves in the South Xiangtangshan Grottoes. It is named Huayan Cave because the "Avatamsaka Sutra" is carved inside. The South Xiangtang Grottoes have another hidden surprise: the origin of the name "Xiangtang" (Echo Hall). Standing in the center of the cave and clapping gently, you will hear a "hum-" sound, as if the sound is amplified and purified, echoing in the cave for a long time. This is no coincidence, but a perfect application of acoustics and architecture by the ancients—a natural "surround sound" system. Historically, the Gao family of the Northern Qi Dynasty was known for producing beautiful but mentally unstable individuals. This family produced peerless beauties like the Prince of Lanling, while simultaneously staging absurd dramas of fratricide and emperors acting as beggars on the street. It is precisely this contradictory, crazy, and artistic dynasty that gave birth to the unique "Northern Qi style" of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes. It was a qualitative leap in the history of Chinese sculpture! Before this, the "elegant bones and clear features" style was popular in the Northern Wei Dynasty, where Buddhas were as thin as supermodels, appearing somewhat ethereal and detached from the world. But by the Northern Qi Dynasty, the style changed dramatically! The Buddha statues began to "gain muscle," with round faces, broad shoulders, and prominent chests, exuding a sense of security. The clothing was no longer heavy and layered but light and form-fitting. The lines were fluid and natural, perfectly outlining the body's contours. This is the famous "Cao's garments emerging from water" in art history. This transition from "bony beauty" to "fleshy beauty" directly influenced the later, graceful, and luxurious statues of the Tang Dynasty.

In Handan, every step follows the rhythm of history. From the earthy fragrance of the Cizhou Kiln to the thousand-year-old Buddha light of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes; from the lingering charm of the Zhao style at Wuling Congtai to the echoes of idioms by the Xuebu Bridge—this city, which has not changed its name for 3,000 years, uses bricks, clay, and carvings to brew time into poetry. Coming to Handan is not just a trip; it is a long-awaited reunion with civilization. In-depth cultural travel guide to Handan (2–3 day essential edition) Day 1: A dialogue between ceramics and stone carvings Morning: Head to the China Cizhou Kiln Yipinfang in Fengfeng Mining District. Converted from an old ceramic factory, you can experience pottery throwing and painting here, feeling the thousand-year-old kiln fire that gave rise to the saying, "Jingde in the south, Pengcheng in the north." Afternoon: Head to the Handan Museum. Be sure to visit the "Ancient Stone Carving Art Exhibition" on the fourth floor. The 1:3 replica of the Great Buddha Cave from the Northern Xiangtangshan Grottoes allows you to touch the grandeur and delicacy of the Northern Qi royal grottoes without leaving the city. Evening: Stroll through the Handan Road Historical and Cultural District. Hidden among the blue bricks and black tiles are stories behind idioms like "returning the jade intact to Zhao" and "carrying thorns to ask for punishment." Don't miss the fried blood and Guo Ba Huoshao (Guo Ba baked wheaten cake) at the street corner snack stalls. Day 2: The legacy of the Zhao capital and the origin of idioms Morning: Climb Wuling Congtai. This military review platform from the Warring States period is the symbol of Handan. Looking out from the platform, you can take in the view of the lake and the pagoda. The Seven Sages Shrine and Jusheng Pavilion in the park are also worth a visit. Noon: Walk to Xuebu Bridge. The bridge railings are carved with the story of "Handan Walk." Under the willow shade at the bridgehead, you can often see elderly people practicing Tai Chi, full of local life. Afternoon: If you have time, drive to the Xiangtangshan Grottoes (North Xiangtang) in Fengfeng Mining District to visit one of China's three major royal grottoes in person and experience the shock of "stones cannot speak, yet one glance spans a thousand years." Day 3: City walk and a culinary finale Morning: Revisit Congtai Park. The morning mist over the lake is perfect for photography. Alternatively, visit the Memorial Hall of Qin Shi Huang's Birthplace next to Congtai Park to learn about the connection between this eternal emperor and Handan. Noon: Taste the authentic "Three Wonders of Handan" in the city: Daming Ermao roast chicken, Weixian big pot stew, and Yongnian donkey meat sausage. Afternoon: Before heading back, browse the cultural and creative market in the Cizhou Kiln Art District and pick up a handmade tea set as a souvenir. Practical tips Transportation: Attractions in the city are concentrated; you can take a taxi or bus. For the Fengfeng Mining District, self-driving or chartering a car is recommended. Tickets: The museum and Congtai Park are free (reservation required); Xiangtangshan Grottoes cost about CNY 50; experience projects at the Cizhou Kiln Yipinfang charge extra. Best season: Spring and autumn, when the climate is pleasant and you can avoid the summer peak crowds. Must-haves: Comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, and camera (flash is prohibited inside the grottoes).

Shanghai Guanfu Museum's ceramics gallery showcases the pinnacle of Chinese ceramic aesthetics — the masterpieces of the Song dynasty. Rather than arranging exhibits chronologically, it is organized by the regions of the eight kiln traditions so visitors can clearly appreciate the differing styles of northern and southern ceramics. · Exhibition focus: centered on the Northern and Southern Song, covering the eight kiln traditions The ceramics gallery displays 113 fine pieces, spanning from the Five Dynasties to the Jin and Yuan, and representing the main characteristics of Song ceramics. The exhibits cover the eight kiln traditions of the Song dynasty: · Northern four kiln traditions: Cizhou kiln (white-ground with black floral decoration), Yaozhou kiln (carved celadon), Ding kiln (white porcelain), Jun kiln (striking kiln-run effects) · Southern four kiln traditions: Raozhou kiln (i.e., Jingdezhen, qingbai ware), Jizhou kiln (black-glazed wares, wood-leaf tea bowls), Chuzhou kiln (i.e., Longquan kiln, celadon), Jianyang kiln (i.e., Jian kiln, black-glazed tea bowls) Exhibition highlights: immersive stage-like presentation · Dramatic lighting and shadow: the gallery uses a black environment with precise lighting so each piece appears as the sole "star" on stage · Breaking chronological order: unlike traditional time-based displays, exhibits are arranged by kiln site to facilitate horizontal comparison of techniques and aesthetics across kilns Key exhibits · Ding kiln white-glazed carved phoenix-head ring-neck bottle (Five Dynasties): a highlight displayed at the entrance, pure white throughout, with a phoenix-head rim molded in relief that breaks symmetry and creates a mysterious effect · Southern Song official kiln zun vessel: the official kilns were one of the five famous kilns of the Song dynasty. This zun has an exquisite shape and is covered in a bluish-gray glaze filled with crazing, with an ironlike foot that reflects the official kiln's prized, lustrous glaze · Jian kiln tea bowl series: the gallery features a full cabinet of Jian ware. Jian bowls rose to prominence during Song tea competitions; their changing hare's fur and oil-spot markings are especially engaging when contrasted with tea Visitor impressions 1. The Song dynasty was a turning point when ceramics evolved from utilitarian objects to works of art. Here you can admire the soft luster of Longquan celadon, the spectacular kiln effects of Jun ware, and the jade-like beauty of Jingdezhen's qingbai ware, and through everyday items such as bowls, plates, and pillows, glimpse the refined lifestyles and aesthetic tastes of people from a thousand years ago 2. The Shanghai Guanfu Museum was founded by the noted collector Ma Weidu and is the first private museum in the People's Republic of China, as well as the highest-elevated museum in Shanghai and in China. It is located on the 37th floor of the Shanghai Tower and officially opened on November 1, 2016. The name "Guanfu" comes from Chapter 16 of Laozi's Dao De Jing: "All things arise together; I observe their returning," meaning that of all things in the world, I observe them again and again 3. The museum is rated an AAAA tourist attraction. Its usual opening hours are Mon 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, Tue–Sun 10:00 AM–6:00 PM Adult tickets are CNY 100, with discounts available for students, seniors, and other eligible groups

Apparently, people were lining up for hours at the National Art Museum of China just to see the famous Changxin Palace Lamp — so long, in fact, that the joke was that you could have travelled from Beijing to Shijiazhuang in the same amount of time. 😂 But honestly… why? The Changxin Palace Lamp is a true superstar of Chinese archaeology, no doubt about that. But it has been on long-term display, so there will always be another chance to see it. The Northern Qi murals from the tomb of Emperor Wenxuan, Gao Yang, on the other hand? That's a completely different story. These aren't the kind of artefacts you can casually assume will still be on display the next time you visit. Who knows when the original murals will be exhibited again — or when you'll get another opportunity to stand in front of the genuine works rather than reproductions and photographs? So if I had to queue for something, I'd choose the murals. And perhaps that's the real reason I made a special trip to Beijing this time. Not for the celebrity everyone was talking about, but for the rare treasures that may quietly disappear from public view again. 🎨🏺 The murals from Gao Yang's tomb are extraordinary in another way, too. They preserve fragments of the visual world of the Northern Qi — figures, costumes, movement and colour — offering a glimpse into a courtly culture that existed more than 1,500 years ago. Some museum visits are about ticking off famous objects. Others are about knowing that this may be your only chance. For these murals, I was willing to make the trip. And I'd do it again. 📍 National Art Museum of China, Beijing 📸 Photography tips: · Murals are best photographed with minimal reflections — avoid shooting directly into display glass where possible. · Look beyond the full composition and capture individual faces, garments, gestures and decorative details. · A telephoto/short-telephoto lens can help isolate details without getting too close to the display. · Museum lighting can be subtle, so keep ISO under control and brace the camera when necessary. · Most importantly, slow down. Ancient murals reward careful looking far more than hurried snapshots.

🏛️ One of Shijiazhuang’s most important cultural attractions 🏺 Explore thousands of years of Hebei history and civilization 💡 See the famous Changxin Palace Lamp (长信宫灯) 👑 Discover treasures from the Mancheng Han Tombs ⚔️ Explore the fascinating Warring States-era Zhongshan Kingdom collection 🗿 Beautiful stone sculptures, ceramics, murals, bronze objects and archaeological discoveries 📸 A great destination for history, culture and photography lovers ⸻ ✨ Travel Experience Visiting Hebei Museum (河北博物院) in Shijiazhuang was one of the best ways to understand the history and culture of Hebei. The museum takes visitors through different periods of Chinese history, from prehistoric times and the Shang period to the Warring States era and the Han dynasty. The exhibitions are especially impressive for anyone interested in archaeology, ancient Chinese art and traditional culture. One of the highlights is the Changxin Palace Lamp, a remarkable Han-dynasty bronze lamp and one of the museum’s best-known treasures. The galleries connected with the Mancheng Han Tombs are also fascinating, with important archaeological discoveries that provide a glimpse into the life and craftsmanship of ancient China. No need to travel all the way to Sichuan and Chongqing! Heilongdong in Fengfeng, Handan: A hidden gem of pristine natural springs in Northern China. Many people think that crystal-clear emerald pools only exist in Jiuzhaigou, but in Fengfeng Mining District of Handan lies Heilongdong, a secluded spring paradise with no entrance fee and minimal commercialization. Formed by the natural water system of the Taihang Mountains, it boasts a cluster of emerald springs, combining the grandeur of northern landscapes with the delicate beauty of southern streams. Perfect for a short day trip from the surrounding areas of Hebei, this newly optimized guide avoids the mainstream and offers new, less-traveled experiences. I. Multiple Travel Options 1. By Car (Preferred): Approximately 50 minutes drive from Handan's main urban area. Navigate to "Heilongdong Fengyueguan Square," where a large, free open-air parking lot is available. We recommend connecting with Yuanbaoshan and Cizhou Kiln Cultural Town along the way, avoiding backtracking and combining mountain scenery, hiking, and intangible cultural heritage pottery experiences in one trip. 2. Cost-Effective Public Transportation Options: Take the 604 or 805 rural bus from the city center directly to the core area of Fengfeng. From there, walk 800 meters to the entrance of the spring cluster. Buses run infrequently, so if you're in a hurry on the return trip, you can share a local taxi; the cost per person is more economical. 3. Short-Distance Carpooling Ideas: Tourists from Shijiazhuang and Xingtai can carpool on weekends. The journey takes 1.5 hours each way, without needing to transfer buses. Along the way, you can stop at the terraced fields at the foot of the Taihang Mountains for photos, offering far more freedom than public transportation. II. Four Core Attractions 1. Longdong Zhuquan Group | Emerald Pool at the Source of the Fuyang River The soul of the entire scenic area, with over twenty springs flowing continuously year-round. The water temperature remains constant at around 17℃, feeling cool even in the height of summer. When sunlight shines directly on the pool, the water displays a layered turquoise color, and the pebbles and small fish at the bottom are clearly visible. You can capture the same waterscape as in western Sichuan without any filters. A Lesser-Known Perspective: Avoid the crowded main pool at the entrance and walk 200 meters downstream to the sparsely populated shallow tributaries. The water is calmer, perfect for photographing uninhabited bamboo branches and their reflections. Avoid the deep water areas; the currents are hidden at the bottom. Just wade in the designated shallows. 2. Tang Dynasty Fengyue Pass + Black Dragon Temple | A Thousand-Year-Old Historical Site at the Taihang Pass Unlike simple water parks, this place boasts a rich northern cultural heritage. Fengyue Pass was once an ancient military fortress at the Fushui Pass in the Taihang Mountains. The brick and wood pavilions built against the mountainside with red walls and clear pools offer excellent locations for portraits in a traditional style. The temple houses several ancient Ming and Qing dynasty steles, comprehensively recording the history of the Fuyang River's springs, and is one of the eight scenic spots of ancient Cizhou. New Perspective: Don't just photograph the pool from below. Climb to the second floor of the pass for a panoramic view of the entire spring area and the distant Taihang Mountains—a rarely shared location online. 3. Natural Black Dragon Cave | A Natural Cooling Space in Summer This limestone cave inside the mountain maintains a constant temperature below 20℃ year-round, providing instant relief from the summer heat. The cave is filled with naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites, and deep within lies a dark blue pool, said by locals to be the dwelling place of a black dragon. Avoidance Reminder: The latter half of the cave is unlit; only the first half is open for viewing. Do not climb over the railings to enter undeveloped areas. The cave floor is always damp and slippery; sandals and flip-flops are prohibited. 4. Nine Dragons Playing in the Water Riverside Boardwalk A log cabin boardwalk built along the Fuyang River features nine stone dragon heads that continuously spout water, making it a favorite spot for families. Tall poplar trees on both sides of the boardwalk provide shade, allowing you to spread out picnic mats and relax under the trees, listening to the natural white noise of the flowing water—perfect for a short break. III. Immersive Local Activities 1. Light Water Cooling Experience: Bring your own non-slip sandals and a change of dry clothes. Enjoy wading in the shallows and catching small fish and shrimp. The scenic area provides simple, free changing rooms. Do not imitate locals' high diving or swimming in deep pools, as these activities are extremely dangerous without professional protection. 2. Intangible Cultural Heritage Pottery Experience: Pengcheng Cizhou Kiln is a 20-minute drive from Heilong Cave. After visiting the springs, you can stop by and experience throwing, glazing, and firing your own ceramic ornaments – a more meaningful souvenir than the park's creative products. 3. Light Picnic on the Mountain and Riverbank: There are no mandatory food stalls in the scenic area. You can bring your own fruit, tea, and light meals for a picnic under the shade of trees along the river. Open flames and barbecues are prohibited to protect the cleanliness of the spring water source. IV. Optimized One-Day Itinerary (Adjusted Order of Visits to Avoid Midday Sun) Arrive at Heilong Cave before 9:00 AM. Explore the cave first to avoid the high temperatures, then walk downstream along a less-visited tributary to photograph the deserted Bishuitan (Blue Pool). Walk along the riverside boardwalk to see the Nine Dragons Stone Sculpture, avoiding the midday sun for better photo quality. 12:00 PM Specialty Lunch in Fengfeng Mining Area. Recommended local restaurants: Cizhou Stewed Noodles, Fuyang River Mixed Fish, and Kulei (a type of stew). All are authentic southern Hebei flavors, and a satisfying meal for around 20-30 RMB per person. 2:30 PM Cultural Climbing Route. Climb the Fengyueguan Pavilion for a panoramic view of the entire spring complex, then drive to Yuanbaoshan Mountain. Enjoy a gentle hike along the easy trail, with distant views of Fengfeng city blending with the Taihang Mountains. 4:30 PM Cizhou Kiln Cultural Street. Explore the ancient kiln ruins, experience pottery making, and purchase affordable ceramic teaware and small ornaments before returning home. V. Detailed Travel Tips 1. Ticket Policy Advantages: The entire scenic area is free to the public. There are no extra charges for the caves, ancient passes, or springs. No advance online reservations are needed; you can visit anytime. Compared to popular paid canyons, it offers excellent value. 2. Best Time for Photography & Visiting: 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM: The sunlight is soft, and the water is most transparent. After 4:00 PM, the setting sun casts a warm, soft light on the pools, offering two different lighting styles for photo opportunities. 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM: The sunlight is harsh, and photos are prone to overexposure. This time is best for exploring the caves indoors, having lunch, and resting. 3. Clothing and Supplies Suggestions: Light-colored dresses and cotton/linen shirts are suitable for photos against the backdrop of the clear water. The temperature difference between the caves and the mountains is significant, so bring a light sun-protective jacket. Bring a small fishing net, a sun hat, and non-slip sneakers. The pool water is cold, so bring a dry towel to dry your feet. 4. Avoid Scams: Be wary of vendors approaching you at the scenic area entrance offering boat tours, pottery experiences, or guided tours. Official vendors have clearly marked prices and no hidden fees, so avoid being overcharged. 5. New Perspectives on Water Source Protection: This group of springs is the source of the entire Fuyang River. Please do not litter, throw laundry detergent, or snack scraps into the pools. These rare, high-quality natural springs in northern China require our collective protection. Many people hold the misconception that clear mountain springs only exist in the southwest. Handan Fengfeng Heilong Cave breaks this prejudice. It boasts the emerald-green waters of Jiuzhaigou, combined with the unique cultural heritage of the Taihang Ancient Pass and Cizhou Kiln. With no entrance fee and low cost, it requires no long-distance travel, making it a seriously underrated weekend getaway destination near North China. Before the crowds arrive, come to the foot of the Taihang Mountains for a refreshing spring experience. No need to travel all the way to Sichuan or Chongqing! Xiangtangshan Grottoes, also known as Xiangtang Temple Grottoes, are located on Gushan Mountain in Fengfeng Mining District, Handan City, Hebei Province. Originally carved during the Northern Qi Dynasty, they were expanded during the Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties. The grottoes are named "Xiangtang" because clapping and flicking one's sleeves inside the caves produces a loud echo. The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are divided into the South Xiangtangshan Grottoes, the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes (including Changle Temple), and the Shuiyu Temple Grottoes (Xiaoxiangtang). The South Xiangtangshan Grottoes are located on the southern slope of Gushan Mountain, north of Xizhifang Village, and currently have 7 caves. The North Xiangtangshan Grottoes are located on the mountainside west of He Village, and currently have 8 caves. The two locations are approximately 15 kilometers apart. The North and South Xiangtang Grottoes contain 17 caves and over 4,000 statues of various sizes, including important stone carvings such as the Vimalakirti Sutra from the Northern Qi Dynasty. The Northern Dynasties Archaeological Museum's most noteworthy exhibits include the Camel Pottery Figurine (considered the museum's crown jewel, 25 cm tall, depicted resting, with tents and wine bottles on its back), Ancient Roman Byzantine Gold Coins (excavated from the tomb of Princess Rouran, one of the few in the country), and Northern Dynasties Imperial Tombs Pottery Figurines (known as "miniature terracotta warriors," with vivid and lively designs). A special exhibition hall features a 1:1 scale replica of the Wanzhang Northern Dynasties Large Mural Tomb (the tomb of Gao Yang, the founding emperor of the Northern Qi Dynasty). The tomb passage is 37 meters long, and the restored murals on both sides cover a total area of 700 square meters, allowing visitors to experience the late Northern Dynasties' painting art up close. For most people, the primary impression of the Sui Dynasty is likely the debauchery and ambition of Emperor Yang of Sui. However, although the Sui Dynasty lasted only 38 years, its influence on later generations was profound. Besides reunifying China after 369 years, it established the imperial examination system and the Three Departments and Six Ministries system, constructed the Grand Canal, stabilized the borders, and laid a solid foundation for the subsequent Tang Dynasty's golden age. This exhibition, using Li Jingxun's family relationships as its backdrop and focusing on artifacts unearthed from her tomb, showcases a large number of artifacts from the Sui Dynasty and the preceding Northern Qi and Northern Zhou periods, allowing us to better understand this often overlooked and misunderstood history. When we juxtapose the extreme honor bestowed upon Li Jingxun, the most extravagant young girl in history, with the tragic lives of the lower classes, we gain a more direct understanding of the social polarization of that turbulent era and a deeper understanding of the open and inclusive historical context of the Tang Dynasty. 🌟Highlights: ~The Northern Zhou terracotta soldiers with sorrowful expressions (P1, P20) are jokingly referred to by many viewers as the "most miserable working class." The frequent wars and dynastic changes in the late Northern and Southern Dynasties caused widespread suffering, and ancient artisans used the expressions of these terracotta figures to express their true inner emotions. ~The "Moth-like" gold hairpin unearthed from the tomb of Li Jingxun (P2-3), with its intricate and exquisite design and superb craftsmanship, refreshed my understanding of Sui Dynasty and even ancient Chinese precious metal craftsmanship! ~The glassware unearthed from the tomb of Li Jingxun (P4) reflects the highest level of glassmaking technology in China at that time, and was more valuable than gold. Two of these pieces have been permanently banned from leaving the country. ~The dazzling phoenix crown of Empress Xiao of the Sui Dynasty (P5, a replica), is equally magnificent as the "Moth-like" gold hairpin. The phoenix crown, crafted from ten materials including gold, copper, iron, glass, white marble, pearl, wood, lacquer, cotton, and silk, underwent twelve different techniques: hammering, welding, filigree, inlay, gilding, gold leafing, casting, engraving, polishing, cutting, and lacquering. It is truly breathtaking! ~The Northern Zhou Dynasty gilded silver ewer (P14), a national treasure of the Guyuan Museum in Ningxia, is also on display. It is the only complete ancient Persian Sassanian-style silver ewer with a Greek mythological theme unearthed in China. It is a unique surviving piece and a top-tier national treasure on the "195 Forbidden" list. 📝Note: Several artifacts from the Li Jingxun tomb, including the "Most Beautiful Necklace in Chinese Archaeological History" (P10), originally exhibited in the Basic Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Artifacts on the basement level, have been moved to this exhibition hall. Those interested should visit the third floor of the South Wing. 🕙Exhibition Dates: April 3, 2026 – October 8, 2026
