The Ella train ride really is that beautiful 💚 The reality is that both the train and Nine Arches Bridget get crowded, and over in a blink, yet somehow it’s still magical. Standing by the open doors, feeling the breeze, watching the bridge appear… one of those moments that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Here’s what you need to know 📌 Save for later:� At the time of our visit, the Kandy–Ella train wasn’t fully operational, so instead of the full route we did a shorter (but still stunning) section. We took a taxi from Ella to Haputale, then caught the train back towards Ella. This is also perfect way to experience the scenery without spending the whole day on the train. The train slowly rocks through the mountains, passing one tea plantation after another, with curve after curve. Although it’s really slow— 60 kilometers takes three to four hours—it’s never boring. Outside the window, green flows by; inside the carriage, you hear locals chatting and laughing. Occasionally, you make eye contact, nod, or greet someone, and time just stretches out. We rented a car for our trip in Sri Lanka, but we specifically asked the driver to wait for us at the train’s final stop just to ride the train. Looking back now, I’m really glad we made that decision. If you go to Sri Lanka and only choose two train rides— these two routes should definitely be it.

Sri Lanka, surrounded by the sea on all sides, has two rainy seasons each year: 🌧️ The southwest monsoon from May to August 🌧️ The northeast monsoon from November to February of the following year Therefore, March, April, September, and October are the seasons with relatively less rainfall across the island. Today, several ruins are scattered by the lakeside, and the Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock are worth seeing (Photo 4). · Photo 5: Dambulla Cave Temple Not far south of Sigiriya Rock, the golden and magnificent cave temple with rows of Buddha statues is equally breathtaking. · Photo 6: Kandy Sacred City Continuing south to Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth houses one of the only two Buddha tooth relics in the world (the other is at Lingguang Temple in Beijing), underscoring its sacred status. · Photo 7: Flower-selling Boy Leaving Kandy, boys selling fresh flowers along the mountain roads while chasing cars have become a symbol of Sri Lanka. Their big smiles are truly infectious. · Photo 8: Sky Tower A slender stupa piercing the clouds; standing at the top feels like standing on a needle’s tip. Those afraid of heights should cautiously consider this challenge! · Photos 9-10: Tea Garden Train and Nine Arch Bridge Taking the train from Nanuoya to Ella is the most authentic local experience on the trip. You can sit with locals in the carriage and watch the train wind through the tea hills. · Photos 11-13: Southern Coast From stilt fishing to coconut tree swings, from whale watching in Mirissa to various hidden beaches, the southern coast offers so many activities. It’s worth spending several days here to slowly enjoy the experience. · Photos 14-15: Galle Fort Unlike the previous four World Heritage sites, Galle Fort was built by European colonizers in the 16th and 17th centuries, giving it a unique European charm. It’s perfect for leisurely strolling and relaxing. · Photos 16-18: Colombo You can take the train all the way from Galle to Colombo or just experience the most scenic coastal section from Mount Lavinia to Kollupitiya. This section is also a commuter route, with workers clinging to the train to enter the city in the morning (Photo 17). Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Ella Town 🛬 Morning: Arrival in Ella (via train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya – one of the most scenic train rides in the world - See photo 12. Or bus from the south, a simple route if you’ve been visiting Yala National Park) Check-in to your hotel or guesthouse (suggested: 98 Acres Resort, The Chillout Ella, or a local homestay). 🌿 Afternoon: Ella Town Walk: Explore cafes, souvenir shops, and markets. Visit the R. M. Perera Tea Centre to learn about tea processing and enjoy a tasting session. 🌅 Evening: Dinner at Chill Café – a traveler favorite for good food and ambiance. Day 2: Hiking and Waterfalls 🥾 Morning: Little Adam’s Peak Hike (Easy, 1.5–2 hours round trip): Panoramic views of Ella Gap and surrounding valleys. You can head there for sunrise as I did as seen in the 10th photo, I woke up at 4am, had a short motorcycle ride to a car park, paid a small fee and walked 30 mins up to the summit. Stop by Flying Ravana Mega Zipline (optional) – great for a quick adrenaline rush on the way down. It isn’t just a zipline, they have swings, a pool and a bar if you just want to chill. 💧 Afternoon: Visit Diyaluma Falls: it’s about 1 hour from the town, I would recommend leaving before lunch and eat at Diyaluma Manusha Restaurant & Hotel when you arrive, the waterfall can be seen in photo 8. It’s super grand and an easy hike once you have ridden to the free car park at the top of the mountain. (Alternate option) Lunch near Ravana Zipline or at Cafe Chill again. Visit Ravana Falls: Beautiful and popular waterfall close to town. You can swim in the lower pools if conditions are safe. Optional: Visit Ravana’s Cave, tied to the Ramayana legend (moderate hike). 🍛 Evening: Dinner at Matey Hut – known for authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry. Day 3: Nine Arches Bridge and Tea Country 🌉 Early Morning: Walk to Nine Arches Bridge for sunrise (or time your visit for when the train passes). Magical photo opportunity. See cover photo and photo 9. 🍃 Mid-Morning: Visit a nearby tea plantation and factory – like Halpewatte Tea Factory (30 mins tuk-tuk from town). We saved this for Nuwara-Eliya but there are some gorgeous ones in Ella too, it depends if you have the energy for this after the early rise. 🍽 Afternoon: Attend a cooking class, photo 11. The one I went to was called Honey Bee Garden and I will do an entirely separate post about that as it was so amazing! 🎶 Evening: Explore live music or chill vibes at The Rainbow Café or Café UFO. Day 4: Ella Rock Adventure & Departure 🌄 Early Morning: Ella Rock Hike (Challenging, 4–5 hours round trip). Go early to avoid the heat and see a clearer sky. I made this mistake and went later, it was so hot and completely cloud covered. It still allowed for some amazing photos. See photos 2-6.
