On the same 38-degree day, some squeeze into popular attractions to see the back of others’ heads, while others wear jackets under snowy mountains and count stars on the grasslands. I’ve scouted these 6 spots for you, and August is the perfect time to visit. 01 Shigatse | Tibet In August, Shigatse’s daytime temperature is just over 20 degrees, and you’ll need a light down jacket at night. I arrived at Everest Base Camp at 3 PM. The wind was so strong my hat almost flew off, but seeing the snow-capped peak emerge from the clouds made it worth it. Don’t rush to leave. Wait until 7 PM when the sunset turns Everest golden red. That scene can’t be captured even one-tenth by a phone camera. 📍 Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in the morning. Enter right when it opens at 9 AM. The sunlight slants on the white palace walls, and the prayer path is almost empty. In the afternoon, tour groups flood in, filling the steps with people and cutting the experience in half. Inside, monks debate philosophy. Even if you don’t understand, watching their clapping gestures is fascinating. ⚠️ You must get a border permit in advance to go to Everest. It can be done in Shigatse city—don’t wait until you reach Base Camp to remember. Take altitude sickness medicine early; don’t wait until you have a headache to treat it. Oxygen tanks rent cheaper at the mountain base than at the top. Don’t ask me how I know. 02 Jincheng | Shanxi Huangcheng Xiangfu, I thought it was just an ordinary old residence, but I was wrong. This is the hometown of Chen Tingjing, chief editor of the Kangxi Dictionary. The city walls enclose a whole complex of Ming and Qing buildings. Walking inside feels like traveling back 300 years. In summer, the courtyard has a cross breeze. Sitting under the old locust tree is even more comfortable than air conditioning. ⏰ Enter the attraction after 3 PM for the best light. The shadows of the brick carvings stretch long, so photos don’t need filters. Mornings are crowded with tour groups arriving one after another, and even the steps are full of people resting. 🍜 Skip the few restaurants at the entrance. Walk 500 meters into town to find a place serving Jincheng fried pork slices. The meat is fried golden and served with garlic vinegar sauce. One bite fills your mouth with savory oil flavor. Locals all go there for lunch, so if you arrive late, you might have to share a table. 03 Yancheng | Jiangsu Dafeng China Père David’s deer park is a hidden gem for families to cool off. In August, the deer are shedding their coats, showing a light brown color and looking very lively. The park is large with many trees. Walking along the boardwalk, you barely get sun exposure. The funniest part is when riding the electric cart, the deer come over begging for food. Carrots cost 10 yuan a bag, and kids won’t want to leave after feeding them. ⚠️ Don’t wear slippers. The boardwalk is wooden and gets hot in the afternoon. There are many mosquitoes in the park, so bring mosquito repellent. I got seven bites on my legs that day—learned my lesson. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Yancheng station. Ride-sharing is cheaper. To save hassle, join a half-day tour with pick-up and drop-off so you don’t have to worry about the route. 04 Altay Prefecture | Xinjiang Kanas and Koktokay, one water and one mountain, are both incredibly cool in August. The water of Kanas Lake is unrealistically blue. Standing on the fish-watching platform, the wind blowing off the lake carries the chill from the snowy mountains, instantly making you forget it’s summer outside. It’s best to stay overnight. The morning mist at 6 AM covers the lake, making it ten times more beautiful than during the day. 📍 The Irtysh Grand Canyon in Koktokay is best visited in the afternoon when the light is perfect. The granite glows warm red, and the river rushes loudly. Find a rock to sit on and daydream for half an hour. The Altay grasslands also offer cultural sights. Kazakh yurts dot the hillsides, and when smoke rises at dusk, the quiet feels unlike a tourist spot. ⚠️ Northern Xinjiang has big temperature swings. Wear short sleeves during the day and fleece at night. Lodging inside Kanas is expensive. Staying in Jiadenyu is more cost-effective and convenient for entering the park the next day. Snow scenes are for winter, so don’t expect them in August, but you can still see some patches of leftover snow on the mountains. 05 Zunyi | Guizhou Chishui Danxia tourist area is all about coolness in August. The valley is full of waterfalls, and the mist hits your face, making the perceived temperature at least 5 degrees lower than outside. I took the big waterfall trail. Before getting close, I already heard the roar. Turning the corner, the mist covered my face, and I had to wipe my glasses for a long time. ⏰ Enter the park before 10 AM. Sunlight filters through the trees and shines on the Danxia rock walls, making them glow red. After noon, the sun rises higher, and the canyon becomes stuffy and hot, causing more sweat. The trails are well maintained and suitable for elderly and children, but there are many steps. If you have knee problems, prepare knee braces in advance. 🍜 Zunyi city has a night market with many stalls selling tofu pudding and grilled fish. The fish comes from the Chishui River, tender with few bones. Dipped in spicy chili sauce, it’s fiery but addictive. 06 Jinhua | Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios is really hot during the day in August, but it cools down at night, making it worth it. I entered the Ming and Qing palaces at 4 PM. Most tourists had left, and the sunset cast long shadows on the red walls, giving a real ancient drama vibe. If you want to experience filming, check the schedule in advance. With some luck, you might catch an open call for extras. 📍 Shuanglong scenic area is better for daytime visits. The mountains have many trees, the streams are cool, and the caves stay around 10 degrees year-round, so bring a jacket. Don’t ask me how I know. 07 Weifang | Shandong Qingzhou ancient city is best experienced in the evening in August. The General’s Tomb and King’s Mausoleum are near the city and can be toured in half an hour, but they feel very historic. Standing in front of the King’s Stele, the wind blowing over the stone brings a silence spanning over a thousand years, more impactful than any museum. 📍 Ji’an rapeseed flower sea is in full bloom in mid to late August. The golden flowers stretch to the riverbank, with green mountains in the distance and the Yalu River nearby. The colors match perfectly. It’s best to visit in the afternoon when the light is soft and there are fewer mosquitoes in the flower fields. ⏰ Visit the Goguryeo ruins in the morning. The slanting light reveals the stone tomb’s textures clearly. At noon, the sun shines directly, causing glare and making photos less appealing. It’s about a 15-minute taxi ride from Ji’an city to the flower sea. You can park roadside without entering the attraction gate. I’ll share my personal experiences at each spot, telling you which ones are worth a special trip and which you can just visit if you’re passing by, so you’ll know what to expect. 01 Shaoxing | Zhejiang Shaoxing’s coolness seeps from its water alleys. Walk along the stone path in Lu Xun’s hometown, where the eaves of houses overlap, blocking the sun. The breeze from the river carries moisture, feeling much more comfortable than an air-conditioned room. Shen Garden is right nearby. Visit around 3 PM when it’s less crowded. Sitting under the willow trees by the pond, you can hear cicadas without feeling restless. Lanting is a bit farther; it’s best to go in the morning before the sun gets high. The breeze by Goose Pond is the coolest then. Don’t rush at noon—find a small riverside restaurant, order a bowl of braised pork with preserved vegetables and rice, then rest in the corridor afterward. An’chang Ancient Town is best visited at dusk, when the aroma of cured sausages and soy sauce duck fills the streets. Set up a small table by the river, pour some yellow wine, and watch the slow-moving rowboats. ⚠️ An’chang’s cured meat shops start closing around 5 PM. Buy souvenirs early. 🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from Shaoxing North Station to downtown. The Lu Xun hometown area has many attractions close together, all walkable. 02 Xiangtan | Hunan Xiangtan’s coolness comes from its water and mountains. Caojia’ao Waterfall is hidden in the mountains. The navigation takes you near, but you’ll have to walk a dirt road. Seeing the water curtain crash down the cliff makes the sweat on the way worth it. The mist hits your face, and standing under the waterfall for 10 minutes cools you completely. Shaoshan Tourist Area is large; don’t try to see it all in one day. Pick the core spots and explore slowly. The mountain shade is thick, with tall trees lining the trails, so even at noon you won’t get sunburned. I went in the afternoon; the wind blowing up the valley carried the fresh scent of grass and trees, clearing my mind. 🍜 There’s a shop at the foot of the mountain selling Mao-style braised pork. Climbing the many steps of Jinshan Temple makes you sweat, but the breeze at the top dries it instantly. Jiaoshan requires a ferry ride; tickets are affordable. The island is full of trees, like a big oxygen bar, perfect for a slow stroll. Beigushan is small and can be explored in an hour, but the “First Scenic Spot of the Yangtze” stone carving is worth seeing. Maoshan in Jurong is 40 minutes south by car. The mountain temples are hidden in the woods and very cool. 🍜 Don’t miss Zhenjiang’s guogai noodles. The noodles are chewy, toppings are your choice, and with a slice of cured meat, it’s perfect. ⚠️ Jinshan Temple is less crowded after 4 PM, and the lighting is great for photos. 🚄 It takes about 15 minutes by taxi from Zhenjiang Station to Jinshan. Taxi fares between the three mountains are around the base fare. 05 Xiamen | Fujian Xiamen’s coolness relies on the sea breeze. Don’t visit Gulangyu during the day; the sun will drain you quickly. Arrive on the island around 5 PM. The wind at Sunlight Rock is strong enough to blow your hat off. From the top, you see the island’s red roofs below, and the sea breeze cools your neck. The Railway Culture Park is a walking path converted from an abandoned railway, lined with bougainvillea and shaded trees, perfect for a 3 or 4 PM visit. At Nanputuo Temple’s release pond, a big banyan tree shades many people. The breeze from the pond carries incense scents, bringing unexpected peace. The Xiamen Botanical Garden’s rainforest section sprays mist regularly, making it feel like a fairyland with cool moisture. 🍜 Don’t eat shacha noodles at the tourist entrance. Walk a bit into the residential area to “Yuehua,” an old shop with rich broth. ⚠️ Gulangyu ferry tickets must be booked a day in advance via the official account. Same-day tickets are usually unavailable. 🚄 Take Metro Line 1 from Xiamen North Station to Zhenhailu Station. Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River is the highlight. The mist is so thick it feels like light rain. Standing on the viewing platform, the roar shakes your chest, and the spray on your face is sharply cool. ⏰ Morning is the best time to visit Hukou Waterfall for good lighting and rainbows. Yunqiu Mountain lies on the border of Linfen and Yuncheng. It’s high and forested, and the temperature drops several degrees inside. The ice caves there stay frozen year-round, so wear a jacket in summer. 🍜 Linfen’s spicy beef meatball noodles pack a punch. Pair with an ice-cold soda for refreshment. ⚠️ The viewing platform at Hukou is windy. Secure your hat and hold your phone tight. 🚄 There’s a direct tourist bus from Linfen West Station to Hukou, taking about 2 hours one way. 08 Tonghua | Jilin Tonghua’s coolness means you’ll need long sleeves in the morning and evening. The Goguryeo cultural relics are in Ji’an, an area rich with trees and water. Walking on the ancient city wall, the wind blows from the Yalu River, carrying the scent of plants from North Korea across the border. The rapeseed flower sea blooms in July and August. The vast fields ripple in the wind. A small path runs along the flower fields, where the fragrance is strong and bees buzz, but the breeze keeps it from feeling stuffy. ⏰ Evening is the best time to visit the rapeseed flower sea. The sunset turns the fields golden with soft light, perfect for photos without filters. ⚠️ Ji’an has a big temperature difference between morning and evening. Bring a light jacket. 🍜 Ji’an’s Korean-style hot pot is a specialty. Beef, tofu, and noodles simmer together. The pace is slow, the facilities are complete, kids have plenty to play with, and adults won’t be so tired they question life. No exaggeration—after reading this, you’ll know how to choose. 1️⃣ Xuancheng | Anhui Don’t rush straight to Huangshan. Xuancheng is the gentle spot for family outings in southern Anhui. Chaji ancient village is much quieter than Hongcun, with smooth stone paths that make pushing a stroller easy. Kids can squat by the creek watching little fish while you sip green bean soup at an old house’s doorstep. At 4 PM, the slanting light hits the horse-head walls perfectly, making every photo look great. Jixi Longchuan is even better. Walking along Longchuan Water Street, you’ll pass ancestral halls, archways, and small bridges. Kids can count the steps as they go and finish the walk without realizing it. ⏰ It’s best to visit Longchuan in the morning and Chaji in the afternoon when the light is just right and there are fewer people. The tomb area is large, so take the electric cart unless you want tired legs. Baishi Mountain suits older kids. The plank road is well maintained, and when the clouds rise, it feels like walking in the sky. Just remember to bring an extra jacket for the strong wind at the summit. Bailixia in Yesanpo is more family-friendly. The creek runs alongside the trail, and kids can play in the water until they don’t want to leave. ⚠️ For Baiyangdian in Anxin, you need to take a boat. Be sure to check the ticket and route in advance to avoid being taken to random shopping stops. 🍜 Don’t miss Baoding’s donkey meat sandwich. The glass skywalk at the summit is both scary and fascinating for kids. Holding your hand, they’ll inch forward step by step, and that expression will make you smile for a year. After descending, visit Dajue Mountain Ancient Town at the foot of the mountain. Eight Diqing | Yunnan Shangri-La isn’t for “checking in” but for “breathing.” Baishuitai lies at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain. The layered calcified pools spread out like terraces. The water is blue-white, sparkling under the sun. It takes over two hours to drive from Shangri-La city, and the road is rough. Some places sound off the beaten path, but once you get there, you find treasures everywhere—fewer crowds, low prices, and scenery that rivals major attractions. These 8 cities are my recent hidden gems, each perfect for a spontaneous trip. NO.1 Baiyin | Gansu The Yellow River Stone Forest is stunning at first sight. The stone pillars in the canyon look like they were carved by a giant knife, standing in rows along the Yellow River. When the wind blows, sand hits your face sharply. I arrived around 3 PM, and the light hit the stone forest at an angle, turning it warm yellow with long shadows. Don’t rush to take the sightseeing bus—walk part of the boardwalk down to the valley floor first. Looking up at the stone peaks feels impressively overwhelming. ⏰ It’s best to reach the viewing platform before 5 PM. At sunset, the whole canyon looks like it’s edged in gold. The park also offers sheepskin rafts to float on the Yellow River. The current isn’t fast, but the ride is bumpy, so don’t try it if you’re afraid of water. ⚠️ Remember to bring water and snacks. There are few vendors inside, and prices are high. For lodging, return to Baiyin city, about an hour’s drive. Accommodation is cheap and clean, starting at just over 100 yuan. NO.2 Nanchong | Sichuan Langzhong ancient city is the most comfortable old town I’ve visited recently, much better than those overly commercialized ones. Enter at 7 AM when the streets are still quiet. The bluestone pavement is wet with dew and a bit slippery. The city is small, but the alleys twist and turn, making it easy to get lost. But getting lost is a good thing—you might stumble upon an old courtyard or a small steamed bun shop. 🍜 For lunch, find a small street-side shop and try the beef noodles. The broth is glossy, the chili fragrant but not overpowering, and one bite wakes you up completely. The main sights are Zhang Fei Temple and Zhongtian Tower. Climb the tower for a panoramic view of gray-tiled roofs layered in a photogenic way. ⚠️ In the afternoon, tour groups crowd the main street, so get your empty shots early. Stay inside the ancient city. When lanterns light up at night, the riverside breeze makes it much quieter than during the day. NO.3 Xianning | Hubei The Chibi ancient battlefield is perfect for anyone interested in the Three Kingdoms. I thought it was just a park, but when I reached the riverbank and saw the cliffside inscriptions covered in writing, I was impressed. Across the river is the Yangtze, unbelievably wide. Standing there, you can imagine the scale of the fire ship battle. 📍 The best spot to see the river is Chibi Jitou in the park. It’s windy, so hold your hat tight. There’s also a Wind Worship Platform with few steps, easy for elderly visitors. ⏰ Plan about 3 hours for the visit. Arrive before 2 PM for a relaxed experience. The light is best at sunset, but the park closes early, so watch your time. Tickets aren’t cheap, so check online for discounts. It’s over an hour by bus from Xianning city center. Driving yourself is easiest. NO.4 Tonghua | Jilin I came to Tonghua mainly for the Goguryeo relics. Ji’an’s Goguryeo cultural sites include the Stele of King Gwanggaeto and the General’s Tomb. They’re close together and can be seen in half a day. The Stele is a huge rectangular stone pillar with Chinese characters so clear it’s surprising. The General’s Tomb looks like a pyramid, called the “Eastern Pyramid” by locals. Up close, each stone is huge, making it hard to imagine how they were stacked in ancient times. If you visit from mid-June to July, don’t miss the rapeseed flower fields by the Yalu River. The golden sea contrasts strikingly with the foreign mountains across the river. ⚠️ The flower fields are seasonal and mostly wilt by mid-July, so don’t go in vain. There’s a tourist bus from Tonghua city to Ji’an, about 2 hours. Stay in Ji’an city and try the local Korean-style hot pot, which is generous and affordable. NO.5 Shantou | Guangdong Nan’ao Island exceeded my expectations. The water is clean, and crossing the sea bridge you can see the blue and green layers of the sea on both sides. After arriving, don’t rush to the popular photo spots. Drive east along the coastal road where there are few people and cars. You can park by the roadside to take photos of waves crashing on the rocks, making a loud sound. 🍜 Seafood dominates the island’s cuisine. Just pick any food stall and order a pot of seafood porridge—it’s so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows drop. You can take a photo at the Natural Gate landmark at Tropic of Cancer Square, but don’t expect much—it’s just a sculpture. ⚠️ On weekends and holidays, traffic onto the island is heavy, often stuck on the bridge. Try to visit on weekdays. For lodging, Qing’ao Bay is best for sunrise views. Open your curtains in the morning and see the sea. Renting an electric bike costs about 50 yuan a day. Riding around the island is tiring but refreshing with the breeze. NO.6 Zhengzhou | Henan I packed four spots into one day in Zhengzhou and didn’t hit any duds. I started at the museum, which is free but requires advance booking. ⚠️ It’s closed on Mondays, so don’t go for nothing. The bronze lotus crane square pot is a national treasure. I stood in front of it for a long time, amazed at the intricate patterns that don’t look 3,000 years old. In the afternoon, I went to Qinwei Water City. The name sounds elegant, but it’s basically a water-themed neighborhood, perfect for strolling and daydreaming. At sunset, I went to Xiliu Lake. The lake isn’t big, but there are no tall buildings blocking the view. The sunset turns the water orange. Locals walk there often, but tourists are few, making for a relaxed atmosphere. Songshan Shaolin is far from the city, so it’s better to dedicate a full day. If you only have one day, choose Shaolin and don’t try to do too much. Stay near Erqi Square for convenient subway access and evening strolls on the pedestrian street. NO.7 Fuzhou | Fujian Sanfang Qixiang is famous, but I didn’t expect it to be so enjoyable. It’s not just one street but a whole area of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings with crisscrossing alleys. Turn into any alley, and the noise stays outside the walls. Nan Hou Street is the main street, busy with shops and people. You can walk it in 10 minutes if you hurry. The real charm is in the side alleys like Yijin Fang and Wenru Fang, which hide many celebrity residences. They’re quiet and perfect for a slow visit. 🍜 Deep in the alleys, find a small shop selling meat swallow and fish balls. The broth is clear and sweet, and the meat swallow skin is crispy, completely different from other places. ⏰ It’s best to visit at dusk when lanterns light up, creating beautiful shadows. Tour groups have left by then, so no waiting for photos. Stay near Sanfang Qixiang to enjoy evening walks and late-night snacks like lohua and guobianhu. NO.8 Xuancheng | Anhui Xuancheng is my personal favorite route. Chaji Ancient Village has far fewer people than Hongcun but the Hui-style architecture is just as authentic. A creek runs through the village, lined with old houses with white walls and black tiles. Moss grows on the corners, villagers wash vegetables by the creek, and chickens roam the stone paths. That kind of everyday life can’t be faked. 📍 The village has a Red Building Bridge, a great spot for panoramic photos. Standing on the bridge, you see the horse-head walls reflected in the water—very photogenic. Another place is Longchuan in Jixi, where the water street is neater than Chaji. The wood carvings in the Hu family ancestral hall are worth a close look. The detailed carvings of people, flowers, and birds are amazing craftsmanship. ⚠️ The two villages are not close, so driving is more convenient. Transfers by bus are troublesome. For lodging, stay in Chaji village. It’s so quiet at night you only hear insects, and birds wake you in the morning.

You can reach them by high-speed train in two to three hours, flights are affordable, and the real feel temperature is much more comfortable than air conditioning. 1️⃣ Zhumadian | Henan Chaya Mountain is a classic northern landscape with lots of rocks and trees. The trails are mostly shaded. I entered the mountain at 9 AM and when I reached Tianmo Lake, the breeze from the lake kept me sweat-free. Don’t wear flip-flops; there’s a steep staircase section, so take it slow with family. Old Leshan Wind is right next to Chaya Mountain, about a 30-minute drive. Go after 3 PM when the light is just right. The wind at the summit is strong, so bring a light jacket. ⏰ Head down by 6 PM. There’s a farmhouse restaurant at the foot of the mountain serving flavorful firewood chicken stew for about 40 yuan per person. ⚠️ Parking is tight after 10 AM on weekends at Chaya Mountain, so arrive before 9 AM. If you’re sensitive to heat, there’s a geology museum at the base that’s cool and quiet, perfect for an hour’s stay. 2️⃣ Zhangye | Gansu Visit the colorful Danxia landform before sunset. The 5:30 PM shuttle from the park is the best choice. The sun casts a fiery glow on the hills. The east gate is less crowded, while the west gate has many tour groups. Enter from the east gate and head to viewing platform 2 for unobstructed photos. Zhangye Great Buddha Temple and Matisi Temple can be done in one day. The Great Buddha Temple is in the city and cool indoors, perfect to escape the midday sun. Matisi is halfway up the mountain and requires climbing a hollowed-out cliff walkway—those afraid of heights should be cautious. Lixian Ancient City is far from downtown and takes two hours round trip by car, so skip it if short on time. 🍜 The “Ganzhou Market” night market in the city offers cheap apricot peel water and hand-pulled fish noodles, lively until 10 PM. ⚠️ Danxia tickets include the shuttle bus; don’t try to sneak in on foot. The park is large and walking is tough. 3️⃣ Fangchenggang | Guangxi The coastal boardwalk in Fangchenggang is perfect at 6 PM. The sea breeze feels much better than inland air conditioning. After the walk, visit Leshan Ancient Fishing Village. It’s small but charming with stone houses and fishing boats. The village has a “fisherman’s restaurant” serving freshly steamed flower crabs that are incredibly fresh. 📍 It’s about a 25-minute taxi ride from downtown to Leshan, costing around 30 yuan. When the tide goes out in the afternoon, kids can turn over rocks to find little crabs and won’t want to leave. ⚠️ Apply sunscreen; the UV rays by the sea are strong, even on cloudy days, and can cause peeling. If you want to avoid the sun, visit the Fangchenggang Museum in the morning. It’s quiet, air-conditioned, and features dugout canoes and shell mound ruins. For lunch, try the pig’s trotters rice noodles nearby—the broth is rich and the noodles smooth. 4️⃣ Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang Sayram Lake is the kind of place that makes you say “wow” as soon as you see it. I arrived at 4 PM and the water was an unreal blue. Don’t just take a few photos by the shore—rent a bike and ride to the south shore. It’s less crowded and you can see the snow-capped mountains reflected in the water. ⏰ The best light is two hours before sunset, perfect for portraits without filters. Anjihai Grand Canyon is on the way to Sayram Lake. Stop by briefly. The canyon’s colors look like a painter’s palette, but the viewing platform has no guardrails, so hold children’s hands tightly. The hot springs in Wenquan County are great for relaxing after a long day. The wild hot springs have just the right temperature, and you’ll sleep deeply after soaking at night. 🚄 You can charter a car from Bole Station for about 300 yuan round trip, which is affordable split among four people. ⚠️ It’s windy by the lake, so bring a fleece jacket even in August. 5️⃣ Tonghua | Jilin Ji’an rapeseed flower sea blooms only in August. Other places have finished, but here it’s still in full bloom. Go at 7 AM when the fields are covered in dew and the sun makes everything golden. There’s a dirt path beside the fields—wear a light-colored dress for great photos. The Goguryeo cultural relics feel more like a large park. The general’s tomb and King Gwanggaeto’s stele are inside. It’s shady and perfect for a slow stroll. For lunch, try the Korean hot pot in Ji’an city. It’s a big pot with beef, tofu, and noodles—one portion is enough for two. ⚠️ The flower sea has no shade and the midday sun is strong, so don’t stay too long. Visit the flower sea in the morning and the relics in the afternoon to avoid the hottest time. 6️⃣ Quanzhou | Fujian Qingyuan Mountain is a place where locals hike and visitors come to worship. Go at 8 AM when the air is still cool. Climb to Nantai Rock for a full view of Quanzhou city. At the foot of the mountain is “West Street Noodle Soup.” A bowl with vinegar pork and marinated egg costs only 10 yuan. After Qingyuan Mountain, take the bus to Kaiyuan Temple. The ancient trees in the temple shade the area completely. Sitting on a stone bench in the breeze, you can zone out for half an hour. Chongwu Ancient City is far from downtown, but the seaside city wall is worth a walk. ⚠️ The ancient city stops charging admission after 5 PM, but shops close gradually, so visit early if you want to explore. Quanzhou cliff inscriptions are halfway up Qingyuan Mountain. Climbing takes time and effort, but the strong wind at the top refreshes you. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don’t go for nothing. East Lake is several times larger than West Lake. Walking the entire greenway takes a day. I suggest just the section from Moshan to Luoyan Island. It’s shady and passes a waterside boardwalk where kids can play in the water. If it’s too hot at noon, visit the nearby Hubei Provincial Museum. It’s air-conditioned and has the famous Zeng Hou Yi bronze bells. Songyang Temple and Huangpi Mulan Cultural Ecotourism Area are both north of the city and good for driving. Songyang Temple is quiet, and the ginkgo trees start turning yellow in late August—great for peaceful photos. You can take a cable car up Mulan Tianchi. The wind at the top is cool, several degrees cooler than downtown. 🚄 Wuhan’s subway is very convenient. Both Yellow Crane Tower and East Lake are accessible by subway, so you won’t get stuck in traffic. 🍜 For breakfast at Hubu Alley, go early. After 9 AM it’s packed and you might not get hot dry noodles. 8️⃣ Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang Jingpo Lake is the kind of place you don’t want to leave once you arrive. I took a boat at 3 PM. The water is crystal clear and the mist in the breeze feels much better than air conditioning. The Diaoshuilou Waterfall has the most water at this time. Standing on the viewing platform, the mist hits your face and wets your clothes, but it’s refreshing. Mudanjiang city is small but has a riverside boardwalk that’s cool at night. Street vendors sell grilled cold noodles with egg and sausage for only 8 yuan, half the price of those in the scenic area. ⏰ It’s best to visit Jingpo Lake at 8 AM when it’s less crowded and you can capture reflections on the water. ⚠️ The sightseeing shuttle stops at 5 PM, so don’t stay out too late. If you want to avoid the sun, the underground forest in the park is several degrees cooler, like a natural refrigerator. If you want to cool off in August, don’t just focus on the usual popular cities. These 8 places offer mountain and water views, sea breezes, or simply high elevation.
