During this trip, Pinghu Qiju Hotel became a warm harbor for me along the way. Starting from Hangzhou, it took about an hour and a half by car. You can see well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties and discover creative shops and cafes. Strolling through the district, feeling the breeze on my face and hearing the soft Wu dialect from the street, everything was so pleasant. I unexpectedly found an ancient stone bridge. Standing on the bridge, overlooking the flowing river, the buildings and trees on the shore reflected on the water like a beautiful ink painting. Before I knew it, dusk fell and the lights came on. The Nanhetou historic cultural district revealed another charming scene. The lights illuminated the ancient buildings, making them look more mysterious and enchanting in the night. The delicious flavors still linger in my memory. The next morning, after enjoying a hearty breakfast at the hotel, I headed to East Lake Scenic Area. East Lake Scenic Area is like a pearl embedded in the land of Pinghu, formed by the convergence of nine rivers. The water area is vast, and the lake and mountain scenery is breathtaking. Walking along the lakeside, breathing fresh air, and admiring the beautiful view, I felt especially relaxed. The lake surface shimmered, with a few boats occasionally passing by, creating ripples. The distant mountains rolled on, complementing the lake to form a poetic and picturesque scene. At East Lake Scenic Area, the must-see is the Li Shutong Memorial Hall. The memorial hall’s architecture is unique, like a lotus blooming on the lake, blending harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment. Inside, exhibits display Li Shutong’s life, calligraphy, paintings, and other works. Through these exhibits, I gained a deeper understanding of his life, talent, thoughts, and spirit, which deeply moved me. Standing by the memorial hall’s window, looking out at East Lake, I seemed to see the footprints Li Shutong left here years ago. Besides the Li Shutong Memorial Hall, East Lake Scenic Area has many other attractions, such as Nancun Book Pile and Baoben Zen Temple. Nancun Book Pile is one of the new eight scenic spots of East Lake. It is built by the lake with a quiet environment, full of cultural atmosphere. Baoben Zen Temple is a historic ancient temple, with incense smoke curling and bell sounds echoing, bringing a moment of peace to the soul. I spent the whole day enjoying the beauty and tranquility of East Lake Scenic Area. At dusk, the sunset’s afterglow dyed the lake golden, creating a stunning view. Returning to the hotel, though physically tired, my mood was especially joyful. Lying on the comfortable bed, recalling the experiences of the past two days, my heart was full of love and reluctance for this small town of Pinghu. This self-driving trip from Hangzhou to Pinghu’s Nanhetou and East Lake Scenic Area allowed me to appreciate Pinghu’s unique charm. So, I turned my attention to Pinghu, not far from Shanghai. I heard that the Nanhetou historic cultural district and East Lake Scenic Area there are full of the charm of the Jiangnan water town, making it a great place to relax and unwind. Pinghu Qiju Hotel is also a comfortable place to stay during the trip. On a weekend morning, full of anticipation, I drove from Shanghai and arrived in this poetic small city—Pinghu—in just over an hour. As soon as I entered the city, I felt an atmosphere completely different from Shanghai. There was no hustle and bustle of heavy traffic; instead, a leisurely and peaceful calm prevailed. I arrived at the Pinghu Jin Han Palace Hotel, which I had booked in advance. The Pinghu Jin Han Palace Hotel was renamed from Pinghu Qiju Hotel in July 2026. The hotel is in a prime location, very close to East Lake Scenic Area and Nanhetou historic cultural district, making travel very convenient. Walking into the hotel, the warm and cozy environment instantly made me feel at home. The hotel features a smart room control system, allowing me to easily adjust the room temperature, lighting, and other facilities. Moreover, the hotel offers free parking, which is a thoughtful service for me as a self-driving traveler. What surprised me even more was the presence of charging stations, which solved my concerns. After resting briefly at the hotel, I headed to the Nanhetou historic cultural district, once known as "Mingkeli," with a rich historical background. The one-kilometer-long old street stretches along the river, like a time bridge closely connecting the past and present. The old buildings on both sides of the small river have white walls and black tiles, with flying eaves and dougong brackets, full of rustic charm. A series of arch bridges and stone slab bridges connect both sides. Walking on the bridge, the flowing water beneath and the occasional small boat gliding by create ripples, resembling a delicate ink painting. In a café, I ordered a cup of rich coffee, sat by the window, watched people come and go outside, and savored this rare moment of comfort. Leaving Nanhetou, not far away was East Lake Scenic Area. East Lake is large, formed by the convergence of nine rivers. In ancient times, it was known as Jiulonggang (Nine Dragon Hill). From above, it looks like a painting of nine dragons playing with a pearl, full of mystery and legend. The lake water is clear and sparkling, reflecting the lush trees, blooming flowers, and ancient buildings along the shore. Along the way, I passed many attractions, including the Li Shutong Memorial Hall shaped like a blooming lotus, quietly nestled by East Lake, exuding elegance; and Baoben Zen Temple, named after its pagoda and surrounded by water on all sides, with a beautiful environment like a paradise. When I got tired from walking, I stopped at a Chinese tea house to rest. I chose a lakeside tent room, brewed a pot of clear tea, watched the shimmering lake surface, the slow-moving boats in the distance, and the leisurely pedestrians on the shore. Immersed in this peaceful and beautiful atmosphere, all fatigue and worries vanished. At that moment, I deeply realized that the beauty of life lies not in prosperity and noise but in this rare tranquility and freedom. Back at the hotel, lying on the bed and reviewing the day's moments in Pinghu, my heart was filled with satisfaction and joy. The rustic charm of Nanhetou and the lake and mountain scenery of East Lake allowed me to feel the allure of nature and the weight of history, helping me find a spiritual sanctuary amid a busy life. Location: Intersection of Binhai Avenue and Tianfei Road, Zhapu Town, Pinghu City (Near Hangzhou Bay, next to Jiulong Mountain) A large, open-air coastal park, spanning 42.5 acres! Nestled between mountains and sea, it perfectly blends history and nature. The best part? It's free and open all day! (Go for it, everyone!) Walking on it with its slight sway is super thrilling. It’s definitely a must-visit spot for your Instagram feed! The island is full of surprises. Half a day in Pinghu, with continuous misty rain. At first, it was a bit disappointing, but a sunny lake is not as charming as a rainy one; the Jiangnan region has a unique flavor on rainy days. Pinghu, a small city nestled between Shanghai and Hangzhou, is low-key and reserved, not exactly a travel destination. However, a sudden rainstorm has washed its Jiangnan essence into sharp relief. 🌧️ Donghu CITYWALK in the rain Donghu Scenic Area is the city lake of Pinghu, formed by the convergence of nine rivers, historically known as "Jiulong Port" (Nine Dragons Port). The lake area is free to enter, and the lakeside trail is well maintained. In the rain, the lake surface is vast and misty, with Baoben Pagoda faintly visible. The CITYWALK starts at the northwest corner of the lake at the Li Shutong Memorial Hall. I originally planned to take a full loop, but the rain grew heavier, so I ended the walk at Baoben Zen Temple. The Jiangnan atmosphere was not missed at all. First stop: Pinghu Li Shutong Memorial Hall. This seven-petal lotus-shaped building is two-thirds suspended over the lake. Viewed from afar in the rain, it looks like a lotus flower floating in the mist. Inside, the hall introduces Li Shutong’s life and displays the calligraphy and artworks of Master Hongyi. It is especially quiet on rainy days. Actually, Li Shutong was neither born in Pinghu nor had he ever visited this small city, but his mother’s family might have been from Pinghu, and he called himself "Pinghu Housheng" (a native of Pinghu), so there is some connection. Second stop: Nanhetou Historical and Cultural Street. The bluestone pavement shines wet from the rain, flanked by old buildings from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. There are very few tourists on rainy days, and the entire street is quiet, with almost no creative shops open. On the west side of Nanhetou is the Mo Family Manor, a private residence built by the wealthy late Qing merchant Mo Fangmei at a cost of 100,000 taels of silver over three years. It has been a filming location for over a hundred film and TV works, including "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "Family Spring and Autumn." Third stop: Donghu Scenic Area - Baoben Zen Temple and Baoben Pagoda. The pagoda stands on Parrot Islet in the middle of the lake, originally built in 1563 during the Ming Dynasty and named to mean "the origin of heaven, earth, and all things." The temple was built after the pagoda. The pagoda’s reflection in the rain evokes the mood of an ink painting. 🪷 Standing in front of Baoben Temple looking over the misty waves of Donghu, the beauty of this small city perhaps needs a bit of weather to complete it, but even more so, a touch of casualness.🌂

While visiting Pinghu, a friend took me to this upscale private dining restaurant. The overall neo-Chinese style ambiance was amazing, perfect for gatherings and birthday parties. The corridors are adorned with ink wash landscape paintings, and antique paintings are everywhere. 🖼️ Solid wood Chinese-style tables and chairs exude understated elegance. 👍 The private rooms are spacious, and snacks and refreshments are pre-set on the tables. 🥜 Even the restrooms have a luxurious marble finish – the attention to detail is impeccable. I highly recommend a few dishes we ordered! 🦞Signature Drunken Crayfish A must-order at every table! The crayfish were huge, with firm, sweet meat, and the aroma of wine permeated the flesh. I slept soundly for several nights and was full of energy for training the next day! 🍳 Abundant Buffet Breakfast What's a working person's morning without a good breakfast? The hotel's buffet breakfast had a wide variety of choices, both Chinese and Western, and the food was delicious. A satisfying meal before starting the day's activities – my happiness level skyrockets! 📈 🍹 The Relaxing Atmosphere of Haiyun Bar In the evenings after training, my favorite place to relax is the "Haiyun Bar" on the first floor. The elegant and quiet environment, the perfect spot to order a drink, chat with my colleagues, or simply daydream – it perfectly washes away the day's work stress. I chose the clear broth, and the portion of beef offal was incredibly generous, including intestines, tripe, and brisket—all cleaned thoroughly with no unpleasant odors, and the meat was tender and juicy 💯 You drink the soup first, then eat the meat; a simple dipping sauce is all you need for amazing flavor. The clear broth is free, and you can add various side dishes for free 🥬 🦞 The Thirteen-Spice Crayfish was also a pleasant surprise!! The sun was shining brightly, and I ordered dried bamboo shoots with edamame, bok choy, yellow croaker with rice cakes, and various green vegetables—all fresh seasonal produce and Hangzhou specialties! Every dish was clean and delicious. The portions would have been larger for two people, but since I was dining alone, I specifically told the staff to order smaller portions to avoid waste, and I finished everything. The advantage of dining at the hotel is that all the beautiful scenery is visible, and all the flavors are authentic. After a satisfying meal in such an environment, you can take a walk around the entire park, which feels like a paradise.
