Live coverage from Handan on March 5th, it’s truly overwhelming
Originally planned to visit Xi’an to see the ancient capital, but a friend recommended Handan. After arriving, I realized this place is the real “hidden historical treasure box”! Every snapshot looks like a masterpiece, plus fewer crowds and a better experience—I regret not coming earlier!
🚤【3 Days 2 Nights Core Route|Travel Through Three Thousand Years】
The beauty of Handan lies in how it blends mythology, history, and nature into the very bones of the Taihang Mountains. This route lets you fully understand the “City of Chinese Idioms” in one go.
Day 1: Mythical Traces · Taihang Wonders
Arrive in Handan in the morning and head straight to Wahuang Palace in Shexian County (about 1.5 hours by car). Don’t rush up the mountain; the Butian Lake and giant relief sculptures at the foot of the mountain are enough to shoot for half a day.
Focus on Wahuang Pavilion and see how it is “suspended” on the cliff by nine iron chains. Climb to the top floor, gaze at the Taihang peaks, and feel the sacredness of “creating humans from earth.”
Return to the city in the evening and be sure to visit the South City Night Market for food—doupi (tofu skin), cold noodles, roasted pig trotters, full of local flavor.
Day 2: Ancient City Stroll · Grotto Exploration
In the morning, go to Guangfu Ancient City (about 1 hour). It’s recommended to rent a bike for 10 yuan to ride on the city wall, circle the city, and see the ancient city and moat from different angles. Afterward, visit the former residence of Wu Yuxiang to experience the subtlety of Tai Chi culture.
Have a full fish feast for lunch inside the ancient city, featuring fish from Yongnianwa, incredibly fresh and delicious.
In the afternoon, drive to Xiangtangshan Grottoes (about 1 hour). The North Xiangtang Grotto is larger and better preserved. At sunset, the light on the Buddha statues creates a serene and peaceful beauty that touches the soul.
Day 3: Congtai Nostalgia · Huiche Alley Search
In the morning, visit Congtai Park in the city center and climb Wuling Congtai, the site of the ancient Zhao Handan city ruins and a symbol of the ancient city. Imagine the heroic spirit of King Wuling of Zhao practicing “wearing Hu clothes and riding archery” here.
In the afternoon, visit nearby Huiche Alley, a short alley but the site of the famous “General and Minister Harmony” story. Feel Lin Xiangru’s magnanimity as he repeatedly yielded to Lian Po for the country’s greater good. Then you can buy some local specialties to take home.
🏨【Accommodation Guide|Stay in History】
In Handan, you can choose to stay somewhere full of character or opt for modern convenience, depending on your budget.
· Immersive Experience: Recommended to stay in a characteristic guesthouse inside Guangfu Ancient City, 300-500 RMB/night. Open the window to the ancient city streets, enjoy the quiet after the city’s hustle fades at night, and wake up to birdsong in the morning, as if traveling back in time.
· City Convenience: Choose star-rated or chain hotels in Congtai District, priced between 200-400 RMB. This is the city center with convenient transport, walking distance or short taxi rides to Congtai Park, museums, and food streets.
· Hot Spring Wellness: There are several good hot spring hotels around Handan, such as Kangye Hot Spring. After a day of sightseeing, soaking in a hot spring to wash away fatigue is a great choice.
