A Guide to Exploring Daqi Pavilion in Baoding.

"If you haven't been to Daqi Pavilion, you haven't truly visited Baoding." Originally built in 1227 (the 22nd year of Emperor Taizu's reign in the Yuan Dynasty), the main structure you see today is what survived and was restored following a fire during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty. Following a massive restoration in 2005, its triple-eave hip-and-gable roof was completely recreated. This brought Daqi Pavilion back to its former glory, beautifully described as "a pearl tower rising above the treetops of Yan, a golden pavilion piercing the blue clouds of Zhiyuan." The popular local saying "You haven't been to Baoding until you've seen Daqi Pavilion" and the old Baoding nursery rhyme "Daqi Pavilion, towering 72 stories into the clouds" both perfectly capture the profound historical significance of this landmark in the city. The surviving architectural complex of Daqi Pavilion stretches along a north-south axis. From south to north, it features the Mountain Gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Bell and Drum Towers, the Daqi Pavilion itself, and the Guandi Temple. This perfectly represents the classic "Seven Halls of the Sangha" layout. The outermost structure is the Mountain Gate, featuring a single-eave hip roof and a plaque inscribed with "Zhenjue Chan Temple." The second courtyard is home to the Hall of Heavenly Kings, where you can still spot traces of decorative paintings dating back to the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty. The wooden framework utilizes a traditional "pillar-and-tie-beam" structure, while the supporting dougong brackets feature a five-tiered, single-arch, and single-cantilever design—a quintessential hallmark of Qing Dynasty official architecture. Flanking the courtyard are the East and West Bell and Drum Towers. Standing at 10.9 meters tall, each features a double-eave hip roof. What makes them particularly striking is their cross-shaped roof ridges, an architectural rarity in Northern China. The centerpiece is the 31-meter-tall Daqi Pavilion, crowned with a striking triple-eave hip-and-gable tiled roof. Suspended from its eaves are 108 bronze bells—often called "bird-chasing bells" in a nod to the classic crosstalk routine "The Bell Score". The entire pavilion sits majestically atop a 5.4-meter-high stone base. A particularly fascinating spot is the Guandi Temple located right behind Daqi Pavilion. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it uniquely faces north—a highly unusual "inverted" layout. It features a three-bay wide gable roof with a covered front corridor, making it an incredibly rare example of a north-facing Guandi Temple. Keep in mind, though, that its unique orientation is its main highlight, as the interior is currently completely empty of historical artifacts. There is a large paid parking lot right in front of Daqi Pavilion, but since the surrounding streets often get heavily congested during rush hour, taking a taxi is highly recommended. While you're in the area, you can easily check out several other major national historical sites nearby, such as the Zhili Governor's Office, the Ancient Lotus Pond, the Baoding Bell Tower, the Qinghe Dao Office, and the Huai Army Headquarters!
