The Death Railway Bridge

The Death Railway Bridge, also known as the "Bridge on the River Kwai" after the popular film of the same name, is Kanchanaburi's most well-known historical site. During WWII, it was built with the help of British, Dutch, and American prisoners of war. The bridge was part of the Thai-Burmese "Death Railway," so named because so many men perished while it was being built. The railway would have helped supply supplies to Japanese troops battling the British in adjacent Burma, therefore development was overseen by Japanese forces. Today, you can stroll or take a train across this bridge, which still has portions of the original framework. Surrounding the location are market stalls selling food and goods. #oldarchitecture#historicculture#summervacation#hikingtrails#urbanexplorer
