If you only want to check off Yungang Grottoes, Datong Ancient City, and Hanging Temple, 3 days and 2 nights is barely enough. Anjian Temple is the fifth provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Shanxi Province. Its founding date is unknown. The existing buildings all date back to the eighth year of the Ming Zhengde era (1513) and were renovated in the 23rd year of the Qing Jiaqing era (1818). The temple faces south and originally had two courtyards, but only one remains today, covering an area of about 970 square meters. The most remarkable feature of Anjian Temple is its murals — covering a total area of 153 square meters. The temple was once used as a granary. A cultural protection stele stands at the bridgehead; crossing the bridge leads to the Water God Temple, also called Feng Shui Shen Ci. The Water God Temple is octagonal, surrounded by a covered corridor. The mountain gate has a single-eave hard mountain roof, with a plaque reading "Xiao Fang Hu," inscribed by Zhu Xiudu, the Qing Guangling county magistrate. Fang Hu refers to a legendary sea mountain. To the west of the gate is the Drum Tower, and to the east, the Bell Tower, with an iron bell cast in the fifth year of the Ming Jiajing reign. Behind the mountain gate is the Holy Mother Hall, three bays wide, with a single-eave hanging mountain roof, decorated with yellow glazed tiles.
