🌟Highlights:
Dabei Chan Yuan, an ancient temple named for venerating the greatly compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, is the largest and oldest Buddhist temple in Tianjin. The temple was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, prospered in the eighth year of Emperor Kangxi's reign, and once covered an area of fifty-six acres. Due to changes over the dynasties, it has experienced various periods of prosperity and decline, with only the smaller-scale West Courtyard remaining. In 1941, Master Tanxu revived the temple, constructing the Heavenly Kings Hall, Mahavira Hall, Great Compassion Hall, and the east and west side halls in the East Courtyard, along with gardens, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. In 1979, the municipal government allocated funds to repair the halls that had been damaged over the past decade, and to restore all the Buddha statues. In 1982, it was listed as a municipal cultural relics protection unit, and in 1983, it was approved by the State Council as a key national temple in Han Chinese areas. The temple is also famous for having enshrined the parietal bone of the Tang dynasty's eminent monk Xuanzang from 1945 to 1956.
Additionally, Dabei Chan Yuan has established a memorial hall for Master Hongyi, and the temple once enshrined the relics of the Tang dynasty's famous monk Xuanzang. In 1956, at the request of the Indian government, the relics were sent to the ruins of Nalanda Temple in India for veneration.
