Originally built in the Middle Ages, the Piazzetta Reale was designed as a double-courtyard structure. Part of it was demolished during the construction of Milan Cathedral, and the current buildings surround the ancient courtyards, forming a recessed square (Piazzetta Reale).
The core building: The Hall of Caryatids on the ground floor is a reconstruction after the fire of 1776 and the only part completely preserved from the bombing of 1943, although the original neoclassical interior was destroyed. The overall style was designed by architect Giuseppe Piema, reflecting neoclassical characteristics.
