This season, all the autumn colors of North China have gathered at Weichang Bashang! As featured on CCTV's autumn foliage map — traveler post in Chifeng

This season, all the autumn colors of North China have gathered at Weichang Bashang! As featured on CCTV's autumn foliage map

Autumn in Saihanba only lasts about 20 days, and the birch and larch trees are at their peak golden glory! It's a three-hour drive from downtown Chengde, and the mountain scenery along the way is already changing—it's just the prelude to a visual feast~🚗 ✨ Birch forests turn golden overnight The sea of forests in Saihanba starts changing color in mid-September, as if someone flipped a switch on the birch forests~⚡️ Overnight, a million acres of forest are painted into an oil painting of gold, orange-red, and caramel! Walking on the forest paths, you have thick fallen leaves under your feet and dazzling gold overhead😄 You might occasionally run into herds of horses in the woods, clip-clopping through the golden shadows✨ Every photo you take is wallpaper-worthy; no filters needed, the light is the paintbrush!📸 ✨ Morning mist, mirror-like lakes Mornings on the Bashang plateau are often misty, with lakes so still they act like mirrors, reflecting the entire birch forest~🌫️ The hour before sunrise is the highlight of autumn on the plateau! When the mist clears, the entire forest slowly reveals itself like a curtain being pulled back—it's stunning!🎬 Some people set up their cameras before dawn just to wait for this shot, can you believe it! If you catch it, don't rush off; watching the mist clear is healing in itself, and you'll truly be moved to tears by the beauty!😭 ⏰ Autumn colors last just 20 days The window for autumn foliage is from late September to early October, with the peak around September 20 through the National Day holiday!🍁 Once the wind picks up, the leaves fall quickly, and a cold snap could leave the trees bare—no exaggeration! The National Day holiday is when autumn is at its richest, but whether you get good weather is all down to luck~ Check the local weather and recent photos before you leave; don't just rely on past experience! If you want to see it, you should get moving this week. Hesitate for two days, and the colors will change—it moves fast!⏳ 👀 Preparation before you go The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is huge—mild during the day and near freezing at night❄️ You must bring a thick coat! The attractions are spread out, so it's best for a road trip. It's a three-hour drive from downtown Chengde, and you can stop and take photos along the way. The National Scenic Byway No. 1 is on the route, and there are temporary pull-offs along the road—take your photos and keep moving so you don't block traffic~ It's windy on the plateau, so hats and scarves are even more useful than a thick coat!🧣 The source of the Luan River is right across from Ulan Butong, so you can check that off your list on the way! 🌙 If you can't make it to Kanas, Bashang has brought all of North China's autumn to you! This golden scenery only has 20 days left; miss it, and you'll have to wait another whole year😭 Ladies, let's go!🏃‍♀️

Can you believe it, guys! Deep in the Ulan Butong Grassland, Liujiadi hides such a — traveler post in Chifeng

Can you believe it, guys! Deep in the Ulan Butong Grassland, Liujiadi hides such a

vast expanse of birch forests dressed in gold. The river valley rift is breathtaking. Standing on the mountaintop, looking down at the colorful forests on the slopes, and gazing at the sparse trees on the sandy grassland—it has gathered all the most beautiful scenery of autumn on the grassland! 🏔️ It's truly God's spilled palette; every shot is wallpaper-worthy! 📸 📍Navigation: Liujiadi ✅️Route: You'll see signs for Wolf Valley at the entrance; seeing them means you're on the right track! Follow the unpaved sandy grassland road. Sedans should be cautious as they may bottom out, but SUVs can pass easily 🚙. Drive to the top of the mountain and return the same way. The scenery is everywhere along the way, so stop as you go and feel the vastness and tranquility of the grassland~ ✅️Also, the autumn scenery at Huamugou is super beautiful! If you don't want to buy an admission ticket, just say you're going to Tiantaiyong Village for the horse splashing performance, and you can enter for free~ However, attractions inside require ticket verification. The scenery at the Salin River beach between Jinchan Lake and Tiantaiyong is stunning! ⚠️Travel tips: The weather on the grassland is changeable, and there is a large temperature difference between morning and evening 🌡️. During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, the morning temperature is only around 5°C, and the daytime high is only 16–17°C. Be sure to bring long johns, fleece, or a light down jacket, and keep a raincoat handy ☔️. It's recommended to travel in groups. Be careful when walking near the cliffs~ Looking at this colorful autumn scenery, I feel completely healed! 🍁

Bashang is beautiful, but don't rush there blindly in October–November; the autumn color window is short, so don't waste your trip — traveler post in Chifeng

Bashang is beautiful, but don't rush there blindly in October–November; the autumn color window is short, so don't waste your trip

Everyone online says Bashang is the gold standard for oil painting-like autumn scenery in the north, with golden birch trees, rolling meadows, cattle, sheep, lakes, and sunsets—every shot is atmospheric. Friends planning to chase autumn in Bashang from October to November, don't book tickets directly. Many people get caught by the timing and low temperatures, having high expectations but failing to see the grand scenery they imagined. 🍁 Real travel experience Many people think you can see colorful sparse forests throughout October, but the peak of Bashang's colors is concentrated from late September to early October. By mid-to-late October, birch and oak leaves have fallen, and the meadows are slowly turning yellow. Entering November, it's basically a desolate wilderness; if you're lucky, you might encounter the first snow, which is a cold, barren style rather than intense colorful forests. The temperature difference between day and night here is greater than you'd expect. It's comfortable during the day with the sun, but the wind is bone-chilling at sunrise and sunset. Even if the temperature is above freezing, the wind makes it feel much colder. Bashang is a large area; Saihanba and Ulan Butong are some distance apart, and attractions are scattered. Large areas are suitable for self-driving, and public transport is very inconvenient. The highlights are the hilly landscapes interwoven with forests and grasslands. Spots like Hamaba, Wucai Mountain, and Princess Lake are known for their soft light and shadows, which are completely different from the atmosphere of continuous red leaves in the south. 🗓 3-day relaxed itinerary (adapted to the autumn rhythm) Day 1: Arrive at the Mechanical Forest Farm or Red Mountain Army Horse Farm to settle in. Don't rush into the attractions; take a walk nearby in the evening to adapt to the temperature, try the local hand-grabbed meat, and rest early to save energy. Day 2: Deep tour of the Ulan Butong loop. Go to Princess Lake in the morning; the birch trees by the lake paired with the still water make for great photos. In the afternoon, head to Wucai Mountain to see the remaining colored leaves in the valley. In the evening, stay at Hamaba and wait for the sunset to spill over the sloping village. Day 3: Choose one of two options. If you prefer forest seas, go to Saihanba and walk slowly along the Seven Star Lake trail. If you like wilderness scenery, drive along the Grassland Scenic Avenue, stopping to view the scenery as you go, then head back. 💡 Exclusive tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Check real-time photos locally before departure. Don't use guides from the peak period in September as a reference. A strong wind and temperature drop can cause leaves to fall quickly, making it easy to have a large gap between expectations and reality. 2. Many roads in Bashang are dirt roads, and there are many unpaved sections. Try not to drive off-road casually with a sedan. Fill up your gas tank before driving into the mountains; there are few gas stations along the way, and signals are weak in some areas, so download offline maps in advance. 3. For horseback riding, be sure to negotiate the price, route, and duration in advance. Low-priced projects offered by people soliciting on the roadside are prone to mid-way price hikes; prioritize regular horse farms. Do not step into the grassland privately. 4. Temperatures are very low in late autumn, so layer your clothing. Bring down jackets, hats, and gloves. The wind in the forest is strong, and fallen leaves can make the road slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. 5. Local specialties around the scenic area have high markups. Don't rush to buy beef jerky or dairy products from roadside stalls; there are more choices in regular shops in the town. Many farmhouses will close one after another by November, so confirm business status for dining and accommodation in advance. 6. Sunrise and sunset spots on the grassland are popular. You need to wake up early to photograph the morning mist. The wind by the lake is strong, so protect your electronic equipment from wind and dust. 🏨 Real accommodation advice ✅ Red Mountain Army Horse Farm (Ulan Butong): Core location with concentrated restaurants and supermarkets. The distance to various check-in points is moderate, and there are many choices for homestays and hotels. It is the first choice for most tourists. ✅ Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm: Close to the forest sea and Seven Star Lake, suitable for those who want to see the autumn scenery of pine forests. The supporting facilities are stable, but it requires a drive to get to Ulan Butong. ❌ Remote individual yurts: Strong atmosphere, but poor insulation and simple facilities. It is very cold at night in late autumn. If you are not afraid of the cold and just want to take photos, you can consider it, but it is not suitable for long-term stays. 📝 Sincere summary Objectively speaking, Bashang in early October has fewer people and is quiet, with transparent air. The combination of sparse forests, lakes, and cattle and sheep creates a unique northern autumn atmosphere. It is not far from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, making it very suitable for short-distance self-driving. However, its leaf-viewing cycle is extremely short, the temperature drops quickly, the late autumn desolation is heavy, and the driving distance is long. It has requirements for cold tolerance and driving experience, and is not suitable for tourists who want to see large areas of colorful forests, are afraid of the cold, or rely on public transportation. ✅ Suitable for: Self-driving enthusiasts, those who like wilderness light and shadow, photography lovers, those who can accept low temperatures, and those who prefer quiet and vast scenery. ❌ Not suitable for: Tourists specifically visiting for vibrant colorful forests, those afraid of the cold, those who don't want to sit in a car for a long time, and those who just want to eat and check in easily. The autumn wind sweeps across the birch trees, and the sunset covers the gentle slopes. Autumn in Bashang is beautiful, but it is only reserved for those who time it right 🍂

3-Day Ulan Butong Grassland Trip: A Healing Escape — traveler post in Chifeng

3-Day Ulan Butong Grassland Trip: A Healing Escape

Finally made it to the Ulan Butong grasslands! Over three days, we drove slowly along the grassland highway, taking in meadows, forests, lakes, and flocks of sheep. No need to rush—just open the window to see endless greenery, with the scent of grass and earth in the air🌿 No need to wake up early for sightseeing. We drove a bit and stopped a bit each day, getting out to wander or just soak in the view whenever we found a nice spot, fully immersing ourselves in the vastness and relaxation of the grasslands. 🗓️Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Ulan Butong and check into a homestay near the Military Horse Farm. In the afternoon, head to Jiangjun Paozi to stroll by the lake and watch water birds skim the surface. In the evening, catch the sunset over the grasslands as herds of horses slowly cross the pasture, then return to your homestay to rest. Day 2: Drive along the Dada Line in the morning, crossing through grasslands and birch forests, stopping whenever you like to watch herds of cattle and sheep cross the road. In the afternoon, head to Princess Lake to see the tranquil lake surrounded by forests, and take a walk around the shore for photos. Day 3: Watch the morning mist roll over the meadows at dawn. In the morning, explore Panlong Canyon to see the stream winding through meadows and shrubs, then take a leisurely drive back in the afternoon. 🏡Accommodation Tips It's best to stay near the Military Horse Farm, as it's close to all the attractions and offers plenty of dining and accommodation options, with many homestays featuring small courtyards. If you prefer peace and quiet, you can stay at a lakeside homestay, though amenities are more limited. Accommodation in the grasslands is in high demand during peak season, so we recommend booking in advance. 🥢Local Cuisine Try the "hand-grabbed" lamb, which is fresh and not gamey; the salty milk tea is rich and warming; the oat noodles are authentic; and the wild grassland vegetables are refreshing and help cut through the richness of the meat. The home-style restaurants in town serve generous portions, so there's no need to go out of your way to find "viral" spots. 📸Photography Tips Dada Line: Capture the road stretching deep into the grasslands, and snap photos when cattle and sheep cross the road for those ultimate healing vibes. Princess Lake: The morning light is soft, perfect for photographing the birch forests reflected in the lake, which look just like an oil painting. Grassland sunset: Shoot the pasture and sunset from a low angle; the silhouettes of horse or sheep herds create an incredible atmosphere. ⚠️Tips & Advice ✔️The grassland scenic area is vast, so driving yourself is the most convenient option. Drive slowly on some dirt road sections to avoid bottoming out. ✔️The UV rays in the grasslands are strong, so be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. If it's windy, remember to secure your hat. ✔️There is a huge temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring a thick jacket even in summer—it gets very cold when watching the morning mist. ✔️Do not drive on the grasslands; stick to official roads and designated parking areas. ✔️There are many mosquitoes by the lake, so bring mosquito repellent. Do not enter the water. The healing power of the grasslands lies in their boundless, open expanse. You don't need to visit every single attraction—just feeling the evening breeze and watching the clouds is enough. If you have any questions, ask me in the comments section💕 Images are for reference only; please refer to the actual scenery.

Sunny days provide clear light; morning/evening side lighting creates good texture and warm layers. · Composition: Use negative space in the grassland + compression for birch forests; use a telephoto lens for cars driving on winding roads; calm, windless conditions are needed for lake reflections. · Outfit: Bright, solid-colored (red/orange/white/camel) coats/windbreakers, paired with hats and scarves, will really pop against the golden meadows. 🚗Transportation and itinerary pace · Major transport: Zhengzhou/various locations ➔ Beijing (train) ➔ Chifeng (overnight sleeper train arriving early at Chifeng South Station) ➔ transfer/chartered car to the scenic area. · Self-drive warning: Grassland road conditions are complex; an off-road vehicle/SUV is required. Drive slowly on gravel roads. Only park in designated areas; never block roads or drive on the grasslands. 🍜Food and supplies · Dining: Eat hand-grabbed mutton, mutton hot pot, and milk tea around the scenic area to stay warm and energized; bring dry food and water when entering the grasslands. · Supplies: No commercial facilities available. Bring a thermos, chocolate/glucose to prevent altitude sickness, and cash (signal is weak). 🎒Essential items 1. Warmth and protection: Thick coat/light down jacket + windproof gear (huge temperature difference between day and night/strong winds), warm hat and gloves, non-slip shoes (dew on meadows/slippery sand), sunglasses, and sunscreen. 2. Recording gear: Camera/telephoto lens (for compressing birch forests and grassland lines), spare batteries (keep warm as low temperatures drain power quickly), drone (great for big scenes, but watch for no-fly zones). 3. Off-road essentials: Start with a full tank, tow rope/air pump, altitude sickness medicine, and trash bags. 💡Practical tips (real advice to avoid pitfalls) 1. Photography trade-offs: If you only want to shoot autumn scenery, stick to the core Ulan Butong area and treat surrounding spots as secondary; visit Hamaba/Huanggangliang if you have extra time. 2. Safety and etiquette: Do not drive on grasslands or break tree branches; the sandy ground by the lake is slippery, so do not trample it; take all trash with you and respect the herders' land. 3. Survival rules: Sudden snowstorms can block roads in late autumn, so check the weather and bring snow chains; there are no restrooms deep in the grasslands, so bring your own toilet paper; move slowly at high altitudes to prevent altitude sickness. Standing at the Film Base watching the rolling golden meadows, with the wind blowing the birch forests into the sunlight, this Inner Mongolian fairy tale trip is truly worth it. Note: Autumn colors are highly dependent on temperature fluctuations; check real-time conditions and fire prevention policies before traveling. Reviews of surrounding routes are based on personal aesthetic preferences; real-time conditions may vary. The grasslands are extremely cold and windy, so pay attention to warmth and safety. Wulan Butong Granssland Scenic Area

This grassland is highly recommended. We visited in autumn, and although it wasn't as golden, it's still worth a second visit. The grassland in spring is much greener, stretching as far as the eye can see like an oasis. While the birch forests are beautiful from afar, up close they're covered in horse manure—black and polluting, making the grassland smell and the experience unpleasant for tourists, completely masking the earthy aroma. We suggest that the horse owners pick up the manure to give tourists a better impression. Overall, it's a very beautiful environment and worth visiting. Be prepared for the cold; it gets just as cold, or even colder, at night.

Yulong Sand Lake

It's alright, but the lakeside is overgrown with weeds, which ruins the ambiance. To play in the sand, you have to go further out because it's covered in camel droppings. Actually, it's quite nice, but the maintenance is problematic. The ticket price isn't cheap.

Ashhatu Stone Forest Scenic Area

Towering stone forests, accompanied by birch groves, offer a breathtaking view as you wander among the grey rock formations and golden leaves, experiencing the wonders of nature. Grass grows beneath the trees, while blue skies and white clouds rise above the stone forest, creating a vibrant atmosphere. In the distance, alpine meadows stretch out, vast and magnificent. The path leading here is also a tapestry of meadows and forests, with valleys and grasslands shifting and changing – a continuous panorama of beauty. The unique scenery of the Stone Forest, unlike any other place, is definitely worth a visit.

Hongshan Cultural Museum

Hongshan Museum and Hongshan Park are adjacent to each other, the origin of the city's name Chifeng, and also a landmark scenic spot. It's best to visit in the afternoon, as the setting sun casts a vibrant red glow on the mountains, making for stunning photos. The museum displays artifacts unearthed from the ancient Hongshan Culture, the most famous being the jade dragon, a symbol of Chifeng. The original is currently housed in the National Museum of China, but here it's shown as a 3D projection. The park is now a public park for Chifeng residents, where many people spend holidays.

Huamugou National Forest Park

I highly recommend Huamugou National Forest Park in Keshiketeng Banner, Chifeng! It's a hidden gem where forest and grassland seamlessly blend. The vast, straight birch forests are breathtaking, and in autumn, the golden leaves against the backdrop of evergreen pines and fiery red shrubs create a vibrant, almost painterly scene. The lakes and mountains of Hama Dam and Jinchan Lake offer stunning views, especially at sunrise when the reflections on the water are breathtaking – a paradise for photographers. Hiking along the wooden boardwalks is easy, and the fresh air is filled with the fragrance of grass and trees – a truly therapeutic natural oxygen bar. July and August are perfect for escaping the summer heat, while late September to early October is when the autumn colors are at their peak. The roads are easy to drive on, and the park is clean. While the dining options aren't luxurious, the authentic experience is unparalleled. It's perfect for road trips within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, family outings, and photography trips – you won't regret coming!

Dali Lake

The lakes on the grassland are very precious. Dali Lake, the second largest lake in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has beautiful scenery. The wetlands in the South Bank Scenic Area are also worth a visit. Maybe because of the drought this year, the grass around it is not growing very well!
