Romantic 2-day, 1-night couple's getaway to Ordos: Grassland sunset + hot springs — traveler post in Ordos

Romantic 2-day, 1-night couple's getaway to Ordos: Grassland sunset + hot springs

Looking to treat your partner to a special getaway? This 2-day, 1-night Ordos itinerary is a total must-do! It’s got scenery, food, and relaxation—everything you need for a memorable experience. 💕 Day 1: Grassland sunset date 🌅 Arrive at the grassland scenic area in the afternoon, take a walk hand-in-hand through the grass, and find a quiet hill to watch the sunset. The sunset on the grassland is so leisurely; the sky shifts from blue to orange to purple. Any silhouette photo of the two of you will look like a professional shot 📸 Head back to the city in the evening for some Mongolian cuisine. Steaming hot hand-grabbed mutton and milk tea—pure comfort 🍲 Day 2: Hot spring relaxation ♨️ Pick a hot spring (like Menggenhua Hot Spring—be sure to check operating hours and prices before you go). Enjoy the full experience with a soak, sauna, and spa. Soaking for 2–3 hours is just right; your skin will feel smooth afterward, and you'll feel completely relaxed 😌 You can head home in the afternoon or spend some time shopping. Accommodation tips 🏨 For a romantic vibe, stay in a unique room type at the grassland scenic area or a hot spring hotel (check prices beforehand). For value, I recommend the Home Inn Huayi Hotel (Minsheng Plaza Branch) in Dongsheng District, located at 10 Zhungeer South Road. It features full-house heating, is clean and tidy, and is very comfortable for two. The money you save can go toward the hot springs. A few little tips 💡 Bring a picnic mat and snacks to the grassland; it's so cozy to sit and eat during the sunset. Prepare a little surprise for your partner (a bouquet of flowers or a handwritten card). Remember to bring your own swimsuit for the hot springs, as they are expensive at the scenic area. In winter, pair your hot spring soak with a hot drink for double the happiness ☕ Travel tips ⚠️ The temperature difference on the grassland can be significant, so a jacket is a must. Soaking in the hot spring for too long can make you dizzy; get up and rest every 30–40 minutes. Hot springs are crowded on weekends during peak season, so it's best to go early. Ask about the price for two people for grassland activities (like horseback riding) in advance. Who are you planning to go with? Tag them in the comments below 👇

Ordos bestie trip photography guide: Stunning photos in the grasslands and desert — traveler post in Ordos

Ordos bestie trip photography guide: Stunning photos in the grasslands and desert

A trip to Ordos with your bestie is all about one thing: taking photos, eating Mongolian food, and taking more photos 📷 The grasslands, deserts, yurts, and traditional costumes make every scene a natural studio. You can get stunning shots with just your phone, and if you bring a camera, it's next-level ✨ Must-visit photo spots 👇 🌿 Grassland scenic areas: Green grass and blue skies. Candid running shots or posed picnic photos both look great. 🏜️ Desert: The dune lines at sunset are incredible. Wearing a red dress is super photogenic. ⛺ In front of a yurt: Wear a Mongolian robe for a "grassland sisters" shoot. The vibe is unmatched. 🏙️ Kangbashi architectural complex: Modern architecture with a cinematic feel. Every shot looks like a magazine cover. Outfit tips 👗 For the grasslands, white, red, and bright yellow look great, especially with a flowy maxi dress. For the desert, wear red or black for high-contrast, dramatic shots. You can rent Mongolian robes on-site (check rental prices before you go). The ethnic style is one-of-a-kind. Hats, scarves, and sunglasses are great props to make your photos look more natural 😎 Photography tips 💡 Light is your friend—the light is soft before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM. Don't make your poses look too staged; walking, twirling, and laughing make for more natural candid shots. Taking photos of each other is more comfortable than asking strangers. Bring a tripod for group shots, and take a set of photos by the window against the city night view for an incredible vibe 🌃 A few reminders ⚠️ The grasslands have lots of mosquitoes, so bring sunscreen and insect repellent. It's windy in the desert, which can mess up your hair, so hairspray or braids are easier. Be mindful of privacy when changing clothes; use your car or the changing rooms at the scenic area. Clear out your phone storage, as you'll be taking a lot of photos 📱 When you're tired from shooting, enjoy some Mongolian food and milk tea in Dongsheng District in the evening. Staying at Home Inn Huayi Hotel (Minsheng Plaza) is a great choice. The hotel is located at 10 Zhungeer South Road, right in the shopping district, making it convenient for shopping 🛍️ What are some of the best photos you've taken on a trip with your bestie? Bashang is beautiful, but don't rush there blindly in October–November; the autumn color window is short, so don't waste your trip — traveler post in Ordos

Bashang is beautiful, but don't rush there blindly in October–November; the autumn color window is short, so don't waste your trip

Everyone online says Bashang is the gold standard for oil painting-like autumn scenery in the north, with golden birch trees, rolling meadows, cattle, sheep, lakes, and sunsets—every shot is atmospheric. Friends planning to chase autumn in Bashang from October to November, don't book tickets directly. Many people get caught by the timing and low temperatures, having high expectations but failing to see the grand scenery they imagined. 🍁 Real travel experience Many people think you can see colorful sparse forests throughout October, but the peak of Bashang's colors is concentrated from late September to early October. By mid-to-late October, birch and oak leaves have fallen, and the meadows are slowly turning yellow. Entering November, it's basically a desolate wilderness; if you're lucky, you might encounter the first snow, which is a cold, barren style rather than intense colorful forests. The temperature difference between day and night here is greater than you'd expect. It's comfortable during the day with the sun, but the wind is bone-chilling at sunrise and sunset. Even if the temperature is above freezing, the wind makes it feel much colder. Bashang is a large area; Saihanba and Ulan Butong are some distance apart, and attractions are scattered. Large areas are suitable for self-driving, and public transport is very inconvenient. The highlights are the hilly landscapes interwoven with forests and grasslands. Spots like Hamaba, Wucai Mountain, and Princess Lake are known for their soft light and shadows, which are completely different from the atmosphere of continuous red leaves in the south. 🗓 3-day relaxed itinerary (adapted to the autumn rhythm) Day 1: Arrive at the Mechanical Forest Farm or Red Mountain Army Horse Farm to settle in. Don't rush into the attractions; take a walk nearby in the evening to adapt to the temperature, try the local hand-grabbed meat, and rest early to save energy. Day 2: Deep tour of the Ulan Butong loop. Go to Princess Lake in the morning; the birch trees by the lake paired with the still water make for great photos. In the afternoon, head to Wucai Mountain to see the remaining colored leaves in the valley. In the evening, stay at Hamaba and wait for the sunset to spill over the sloping village. Day 3: Choose one of two options. If you prefer forest seas, go to Saihanba and walk slowly along the Seven Star Lake trail. If you like wilderness scenery, drive along the Grassland Scenic Avenue, stopping to view the scenery as you go, then head back. 💡 Exclusive tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Check real-time photos locally before departure. Don't use guides from the peak period in September as a reference. A strong wind and temperature drop can cause leaves to fall quickly, making it easy to have a large gap between expectations and reality. 2. Many roads in Bashang are dirt roads, and there are many unpaved sections. Try not to drive off-road casually with a sedan. Fill up your gas tank before driving into the mountains; there are few gas stations along the way, and signals are weak in some areas, so download offline maps in advance. 3. For horseback riding, be sure to negotiate the price, route, and duration in advance. Low-priced projects offered by people soliciting on the roadside are prone to mid-way price hikes; prioritize regular horse farms. Do not step into the grassland privately. 4. Temperatures are very low in late autumn, so layer your clothing. Bring down jackets, hats, and gloves. The wind in the forest is strong, and fallen leaves can make the road slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. 5. Local specialties around the scenic area have high markups. Don't rush to buy beef jerky or dairy products from roadside stalls; there are more choices in regular shops in the town. Many farmhouses will close one after another by November, so confirm business status for dining and accommodation in advance. 6. Sunrise and sunset spots on the grassland are popular. You need to wake up early to photograph the morning mist. The wind by the lake is strong, so protect your electronic equipment from wind and dust. 🏨 Real accommodation advice ✅ Red Mountain Army Horse Farm (Ulan Butong): Core location with concentrated restaurants and supermarkets. The distance to various check-in points is moderate, and there are many choices for homestays and hotels. It is the first choice for most tourists. ✅ Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm: Close to the forest sea and Seven Star Lake, suitable for those who want to see the autumn scenery of pine forests. The supporting facilities are stable, but it requires a drive to get to Ulan Butong. ❌ Remote individual yurts: Strong atmosphere, but poor insulation and simple facilities. It is very cold at night in late autumn. If you are not afraid of the cold and just want to take photos, you can consider it, but it is not suitable for long-term stays. 📝 Sincere summary Objectively speaking, Bashang in early October has fewer people and is quiet, with transparent air. The combination of sparse forests, lakes, and cattle and sheep creates a unique northern autumn atmosphere. It is not far from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, making it very suitable for short-distance self-driving. However, its leaf-viewing cycle is extremely short, the temperature drops quickly, the late autumn desolation is heavy, and the driving distance is long. It has requirements for cold tolerance and driving experience, and is not suitable for tourists who want to see large areas of colorful forests, are afraid of the cold, or rely on public transportation. ✅ Suitable for: Self-driving enthusiasts, those who like wilderness light and shadow, photography lovers, those who can accept low temperatures, and those who prefer quiet and vast scenery. ❌ Not suitable for: Tourists specifically visiting for vibrant colorful forests, those afraid of the cold, those who don't want to sit in a car for a long time, and those who just want to eat and check in easily. The autumn wind sweeps across the birch trees, and the sunset covers the gentle slopes. Autumn in Bashang is beautiful, but it is only reserved for those who time it right 🍂

6-Day, 5-Night Chongqing Road Trip | From the Mountain City to the Grasslands, This Western Route Is Legendary — traveler post in Ordos

6-Day, 5-Night Chongqing Road Trip | From the Mountain City to the Grasslands, This Western Route Is Legendary

Complete Guide to the 6-Day, 5-Night Western Road Trip from Chongqing to Hohhot This 6-day, 5-night western road trip loop takes you north from Chongqing, crossing the Qinling Mountains and the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi, all the way to Inner Mongolia. It connects the Yellow River, volcanoes, deserts, grasslands, and the historic old town of Hohhot. It is perfect for friends or family trips, offering high flexibility so you can stop anytime to take photos of the scenery along the way. The pace is balanced, allowing you to experience the grandeur of a long-distance road trip without the intensity of constant driving. The detailed guide below will help you easily complete this journey to the northern frontier. Estimated cost: CNY 4,200–6,000 per person (based on 4 people sharing a car, splitting fuel and toll costs; includes mid-range accommodation and standard dining; excludes shopping and optional entertainment activities) Day 1: Chongqing to Yan'an, through the clouds of the Qinling Mountains, heading north Depart early from Chongqing and take the Baomao Expressway through the long series of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains. The mountains are shrouded in mist, and if you catch the Tyndall effect, you can pull over briefly to take photos. The drive is long, so we recommend taking turns driving. Stop at a service area at noon for a quick rest and meal, then arrive in Yan'an in the evening to check into your hotel. In the evening, you can explore the Yan'an Old Town night market, try local Shaanbei minjie (wheat noodles) and lamb noodles, and get some rest to recharge for the next day's journey north. Tip: The Qinling Expressway has many curves and tunnels, so strictly control your speed and fill up your gas tank in advance. Day 2: Yan'an to Ordos, the Yellow River enters Inner Mongolia, first glimpse of the plateau scenery Depart from Yan'an in the morning and head north. The Loess Plateau landscape gradually unfolds along the way, and you can catch a distant view of the Yellow River and stop at the Yellow River Bridge. In the afternoon, you will enter Inner Mongolia, where the landscape transitions from loess to a gentle plateau. Arrive in Ordos in the evening. For dinner, we recommend local stewed lamb and dairy products. Take a walk to relax after dinner; no high-intensity activities are planned. Stay in downtown Ordos, which has well-developed urban amenities and plenty of accommodation options. Day 3: Ordos to Ulan Hada Volcano, exploring alien landscapes Spend the day heading to Ulan Hada Volcano Geopark. This black basalt volcanic landscape is known as "Inner Mongolia's Little Mars," with volcanoes No. 3, 5, and 6 being the most worth visiting. After arriving in the afternoon, start by exploring Volcano No. 6; the black volcanic rock is very photogenic, and you can rent a spacesuit for photos. Volcano No. 5 has a complete structure, perfect for long-distance shots. Volcano No. 3 has a gentle slope, making it easy to climb to the top. Wait for the sunset in the evening; if the weather is clear after dark, you can see the Milky Way. Stay at a hotel in the town of Chahar Right Rear Banner, which has plenty of dining and accommodation options. Tip: The volcanic area is windy with a large temperature difference between day and night, so be sure to bring a thick jacket. The volcanoes are free to enter, and renting a spacesuit for photos is optional. Day 4: Ulan Hada to Xiangshawan, desert solitude, desert sunset Wake up early and head to Kubuqi Xiangshawan (Resonant Sand Bay) for a one-day desert experience. Enter the park in the morning to hike the dunes and see the rolling sand ridges. If you enjoy activities, you can pay to experience sand sliding or desert off-road vehicles. If you prefer not to do these, you can simply walk around and wait for the sunset. The golden dunes at sunset create an incredible atmosphere and are the best time of day for photography. Leave the scenic area in the evening and head toward Hohhot, either stopping along the way or arriving directly in Hohhot to check in. Meals are primarily Mongolian cuisine; try the hand-grabbed mutton and scrambled eggs with wild chives for a unique flavor. Day 5: Around Hohhot to Huitengxile Grassland, a healing trip in the grassland twilight Today is all about relaxation. Drive from the city to Huitengxile Grassland, where vast meadows meet fields of wind turbines, offering wide-open views. There is no need to rush between attractions; just drive along the grassland roads, stopping whenever you like to watch the cattle and sheep, enjoy the breeze, and take photos. If you have time, you can go for a short horseback ride and wait for the sunset and fiery clouds in the evening. For an immersive experience, you can stay overnight in a yurt; if you prefer comfortable accommodation, return to downtown Hohhot. Temperatures on the grassland are very low at night, so be sure to have a windbreaker ready, even in summer. Day 6: In-depth tour of Hohhot, the "Green City" culture, preparing for the return trip On the last day, slow down and explore downtown Hohhot. In the morning, visit the Inner Mongolia Museum (free, but requires advance reservation) to learn about the history of grassland nomads. In the afternoon, visit Dazhao Temple and Saishang Old Street. The old street is lined with ancient buildings, and the stone-paved roads after the rain create a wonderful atmosphere. You can also buy some local dairy specialties. Rest in the evening to conclude the trip. For the drive back, plan your journey based on your energy levels; driving long distances overnight is not recommended. Travel Tips 1. Attractions in Inner Mongolia are far apart, and daily driving distances are long. Plan your gas stops in advance and try to refuel whenever your tank is half full. If traveling with others, take turns driving to avoid fatigue. 2. Climate: The plateau has strong UV rays and a huge temperature difference between day and night. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a windbreaker are essential. The weather on the grasslands and at the volcanoes is changeable, so bring rain gear. 3. Diet: There is a lot of local beef, lamb, and dairy products. If you have a sensitive stomach, try them gradually and drink plenty of water. 4. Road conditions: Expressway conditions are good, but some roads near the volcanoes and grasslands are unpaved, so an SUV is preferred. Always obey speed limits while driving.

Whistling Dune Bay

There are so many activities in the desert: sandboarding, desert train rides, Bigfoot rides, camel riding, and it's best to travel off-peak. It's freezing cold! Remember to wear warm clothes. Emerging in the desert to escape the rain in late autumn—fewer people, great for taking photos, so refreshing!

Ordos Prairie

Although the grass on the grassland wasn't quite green yet in May, the performances at the scenic area were excellent, especially the hero performance. However, one thing I have to mention is that you can enter without buying a ticket and just follow their official WeChat account, and even sit with those who bought tickets. I really don't understand. There are many things to do inside the grassland, the route is well-planned, and several performances are very entertaining.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan

The sacred site of Genghis Khan is magnificent! The entire park is solemn and dignified, with architecture rich in ethnic characteristics. A guided tour enhances the experience, allowing you to learn about the 800-year-old culture of tomb guardianship and gain a truly enriching experience. It's perfect for those who enjoy history and culture and definitely worth a visit.

Genghis Khan Mausoleum Scenic Spot

To be honest, the stage, choreography, and lighting are all very good. The actors are also very professional and dedicated. The performance is very complete and the applause continues. I think the whole performance atmosphere is very good. The professionalism, audio-visual effects, and hardware are all very good. I like this kind of performance very much. I strongly recommend it.

Kangbashi Natural Museum

I went to Kangbashi Museum some time ago, and it was really amazing! As soon as I walked to the front of the museum, I was attracted by the unique architectural shape, which looked like a rock that had been polished by time and had a special sense of history. After entering, the various exhibits were dazzling. There were ancient bronzes, exquisite ceramics, and precious calligraphy and paintings. Listening to the story behind these exhibits introduced by the guide, it was as if I traveled through time and space, and personally experienced the long history and splendid culture of Ordos. I felt very rewarding. I sincerely recommend everyone to go and have a look!

Ordos Wildlife Park

The zoo is large; you can walk around or take the shuttle bus provided by the park. The caged vehicle costs 80 yuan per person, which is a pretty good experience as you can sit inside. You can watch the monster show and also feed chickens to the lions (100 yuan per chicken). Fruit is 20 yuan per serving. Feeding the bears is another option; you can see many things along the way. At the very back, there's a small amusement park with some optional attractions like go-karts. The restaurant closes around 5 PM; you can take a mini-train to the main entrance.

Xiangshawan is a lot of fun! Our tour guide, Daxing, was fantastic! Highly recommend visiting!

Yemingsha Scenic Area

There's a bonfire party and fireworks in the evening, which are usually short but create a great atmosphere. We didn't participate in the walking stargazing; instead, we rode in the Starship Troopers. The explanation was practically nonexistent, and the photos were just average. The only fun part was the ride itself, but it was very short, so the value for money was so-so. There are many desert activities, but some are subpar. The good thing is that there are few people and no queues, and the prices aren't too expensive. I recommend buying sand gaiters and bringing a flashlight before you go.

Kubuqi Desert

The overall environment of the scenic area is quite good, with a wide variety of entertainment options. However, the most obvious drawback is the exorbitant price of the scenic area's shuttle bus. The ticket agent told me the distance was two to three kilometers, but it wasn't. A person with good stamina could walk the distance, about 500 meters, in about ten minutes. The 90 yuan shuttle bus is excessively expensive, and the staff try to mislead you into buying tickets. A bad review!!!

Xiansha Island

Xiangshawan is perfect for family trips, with excellent recreational facilities and unique desert experiences. It's recommended to enter the park early to avoid the strong midday sun. Hotels within the scenic area are relatively expensive; consider staying near the park for better value.
