If you come to Baotou, you must visit the urban grassland — traveler post in Baotou

If you come to Baotou, you must visit the urban grassland

If you come to Baotou, you must visit the urban grassland Many people think of Baotou only as an industrial city, but once you visit, you'll realize how gentle it truly is. The city center is home to the expansive Saihan Tala Urban Grassland. You don't need to leave the city or travel far to see the wind blowing through the grass and deer grazing leisurely. Feed the deer, go for a bike ride, and feel the prairie breeze—it's an instant mood booster. For a dose of cultural heritage, head to Wudangzhao. Tucked away in the Yin Mountains, its solemn architecture and fluttering prayer flags create a peaceful atmosphere that calms the mind. If you prefer "hardcore" sights, the Northern Weaponry City is truly impressive. With real military equipment lined up, it's a powerful display that makes for striking photos. Nanhai Wetland offers a quieter experience, with its vast lake and fields of reeds—perfect for a leisurely stroll or watching the sunset. After a long day of exploring, treat yourself to authentic shaomai and lamb to complete your Baotou trip. After a day of fun, you need a comfortable place to stay. We recommend Moshang Qingya Hotel. Its "New Chinese" style is simple yet elegant, the rooms are clean and quiet, and the smart amenities are very convenient. The bedding is soft, perfect for shedding the day's fatigue. The hotel offers breakfast, a gym, a laundry room, and free parking, making it stress-free whether you're driving or using public transport. For a trip to Baotou, a comfortable stay is key to having a great time. Moshang Qingya Hotel is your reliable choice in the "Deer City."

6-Day, 5-Night Chongqing Road Trip | From the Mountain City to the Grasslands, This Western Route Is Legendary — traveler post in Baotou

6-Day, 5-Night Chongqing Road Trip | From the Mountain City to the Grasslands, This Western Route Is Legendary

Complete Guide to the 6-Day, 5-Night Western Road Trip from Chongqing to Hohhot This 6-day, 5-night western road trip loop takes you north from Chongqing, crossing the Qinling Mountains and the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi, all the way to Inner Mongolia. It connects the Yellow River, volcanoes, deserts, grasslands, and the historic old town of Hohhot. It is perfect for friends or family trips, offering high flexibility so you can stop anytime to take photos of the scenery along the way. The pace is balanced, allowing you to experience the grandeur of a long-distance road trip without the intensity of constant driving. The detailed guide below will help you easily complete this journey to the northern frontier. Estimated cost: CNY 4,200–6,000 per person (based on 4 people sharing a car, splitting fuel and toll costs; includes mid-range accommodation and standard dining; excludes shopping and optional entertainment activities) Day 1: Chongqing to Yan'an, through the clouds of the Qinling Mountains, heading north Depart early from Chongqing and take the Baomao Expressway through the long series of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains. The mountains are shrouded in mist, and if you catch the Tyndall effect, you can pull over briefly to take photos. The drive is long, so we recommend taking turns driving. Stop at a service area at noon for a quick rest and meal, then arrive in Yan'an in the evening to check into your hotel. In the evening, you can explore the Yan'an Old Town night market, try local Shaanbei minjie (wheat noodles) and lamb noodles, and get some rest to recharge for the next day's journey north. Tip: The Qinling Expressway has many curves and tunnels, so strictly control your speed and fill up your gas tank in advance. Day 2: Yan'an to Ordos, the Yellow River enters Inner Mongolia, first glimpse of the plateau scenery Depart from Yan'an in the morning and head north. The Loess Plateau landscape gradually unfolds along the way, and you can catch a distant view of the Yellow River and stop at the Yellow River Bridge. In the afternoon, you will enter Inner Mongolia, where the landscape transitions from loess to a gentle plateau. Arrive in Ordos in the evening. For dinner, we recommend local stewed lamb and dairy products. Take a walk to relax after dinner; no high-intensity activities are planned. Stay in downtown Ordos, which has well-developed urban amenities and plenty of accommodation options. Day 3: Ordos to Ulan Hada Volcano, exploring alien landscapes Spend the day heading to Ulan Hada Volcano Geopark. This black basalt volcanic landscape is known as "Inner Mongolia's Little Mars," with volcanoes No. 3, 5, and 6 being the most worth visiting. After arriving in the afternoon, start by exploring Volcano No. 6; the black volcanic rock is very photogenic, and you can rent a spacesuit for photos. Volcano No. 5 has a complete structure, perfect for long-distance shots. Volcano No. 3 has a gentle slope, making it easy to climb to the top. Wait for the sunset in the evening; if the weather is clear after dark, you can see the Milky Way. Stay at a hotel in the town of Chahar Right Rear Banner, which has plenty of dining and accommodation options. Tip: The volcanic area is windy with a large temperature difference between day and night, so be sure to bring a thick jacket. The volcanoes are free to enter, and renting a spacesuit for photos is optional. Day 4: Ulan Hada to Xiangshawan, desert solitude, desert sunset Wake up early and head to Kubuqi Xiangshawan (Resonant Sand Bay) for a one-day desert experience. Enter the park in the morning to hike the dunes and see the rolling sand ridges. If you enjoy activities, you can pay to experience sand sliding or desert off-road vehicles. If you prefer not to do these, you can simply walk around and wait for the sunset. The golden dunes at sunset create an incredible atmosphere and are the best time of day for photography. Leave the scenic area in the evening and head toward Hohhot, either stopping along the way or arriving directly in Hohhot to check in. Meals are primarily Mongolian cuisine; try the hand-grabbed mutton and scrambled eggs with wild chives for a unique flavor. Day 5: Around Hohhot to Huitengxile Grassland, a healing trip in the grassland twilight Today is all about relaxation. Drive from the city to Huitengxile Grassland, where vast meadows meet fields of wind turbines, offering wide-open views. There is no need to rush between attractions; just drive along the grassland roads, stopping whenever you like to watch the cattle and sheep, enjoy the breeze, and take photos. If you have time, you can go for a short horseback ride and wait for the sunset and fiery clouds in the evening. For an immersive experience, you can stay overnight in a yurt; if you prefer comfortable accommodation, return to downtown Hohhot. Temperatures on the grassland are very low at night, so be sure to have a windbreaker ready, even in summer. Day 6: In-depth tour of Hohhot, the "Green City" culture, preparing for the return trip On the last day, slow down and explore downtown Hohhot. In the morning, visit the Inner Mongolia Museum (free, but requires advance reservation) to learn about the history of grassland nomads. In the afternoon, visit Dazhao Temple and Saishang Old Street. The old street is lined with ancient buildings, and the stone-paved roads after the rain create a wonderful atmosphere. You can also buy some local dairy specialties. Rest in the evening to conclude the trip. For the drive back, plan your journey based on your energy levels; driving long distances overnight is not recommended. Travel Tips 1. Attractions in Inner Mongolia are far apart, and daily driving distances are long. Plan your gas stops in advance and try to refuel whenever your tank is half full. If traveling with others, take turns driving to avoid fatigue. 2. Climate: The plateau has strong UV rays and a huge temperature difference between day and night. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a windbreaker are essential. The weather on the grasslands and at the volcanoes is changeable, so bring rain gear. 3. Diet: There is a lot of local beef, lamb, and dairy products. If you have a sensitive stomach, try them gradually and drink plenty of water. 4. Road conditions: Expressway conditions are good, but some roads near the volcanoes and grasslands are unpaved, so an SUV is preferred. Always obey speed limits while driving.

Vast grasslands, as far as the eye can see, filled with romantic mountains and rivers — traveler post in Baotou

Vast grasslands, as far as the eye can see, filled with romantic mountains and rivers

Inner Mongolia grassland travel guide ✨Best time to visit · June–August (top choice): The grasslands are fully green, wildflowers bloom everywhere, temperatures range from 15–26℃, perfect for summer cooling, and you can catch the Nadam Festival (horse racing, wrestling, archery). July and August offer the best scenery but have more tourists; June has fewer visitors and better prices. · September: The grasslands turn golden, ideal for photography, with fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices. · April–May: Strong winds and sand, grass hasn’t fully grown yet, not recommended for first-time visitors; winter is suitable for ice and snow grassland activities. 🌿How to choose among the four major grasslands 1. Hulunbuir grassland | top choice for first-timers Scenery: vast pastures, Morigele River, wetlands, birch forests, border landscapes, well-equipped, suitable for 4–6 day extended trips. 2. Xilingol (Ulagai) grassland | pristine and less crowded Preserves authentic herder life, filming location for Wolf Totem, lightly commercialized, ideal for those who prefer quiet, in-depth nomadic experiences. 3. **Huitengxile grassland (Ulanqab)** | highland windmill grassland High altitude, especially cool in summer, covered with windmills and wildflowers, perfect for 2–3 day short trips, photography, and summer cooling, convenient for travelers from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. 4. Xilamuren grassland | closest to Hohhot, easy transportation, suitable for visitors with limited time who want a simple grassland experience. 🗓️Sample itineraries ① Short 2–3 days (Huitengxile / Xilamuren) Day 1: Arrive, visit Huanghuagou, watch windmill sunset, stay in a yurt, join a bonfire party Day 2: Horseback riding on the grassland, visit herder families, experience dairy product making Day 3: Watch the grassland sunrise, return trip ② Classic 5 days (Hulunbuir loop) Day 1: Hailar → Morigele River, see the winding river, stay in Erguna Day 2: Aoluguya reindeer tribe, birch forest, stay in Enhe Mukeleng town Day 3: Border highway, horseback riding at Heishantou, watch grassland sunset, stay in a yurt Day 4: Hulun Lake → Manzhouli, see city night view Day 5: Return from Manzhouli to Hailar, end of trip 🚗Transportation Inner Mongolia is vast, and distances between attractions are long. · Long trips in Hulunbuir: fly to Hailar Dongshan Airport, prioritize self-driving or chartered cars, public buses are not suitable for point-to-point travel. · Central grasslands (Huitengxile, Xilamuren): travel to Hohhot/Ulanqab, then rent a car or charter a vehicle. 🏠Accommodation 1. Yurts: prioritize improved yurts with private bathrooms for comfort; traditional yurts are basic and cold at night. Peak season prices range from 300–800 CNY per night. 2. Towns: stay in regular hotels in Hailar, Manzhouli, and Xilinhot with complete facilities. Tip: Grassland nights are cold, so even in summer, use thick blankets when staying in yurts. 🍲Must-try foods Hand-held mutton, roasted lamb leg, milk tea, milk skin, milk tofu, beef jerky, lamb offal soup. Tip: Since beef, lamb, and dairy products are common, bring some digestive medicine. 🎯Must-do activities · Ride horses at official stables, confirm duration and price in advance to avoid last-minute price hikes. · Watch grassland sunsets and starry skies; the Milky Way is beautiful on clear summer nights. · Join bonfire parties, visit herder homes, and taste milk tea. · Attend the Nadam Festival to watch horse racing and wrestling performances. 🎒Clothing & essentials Big temperature differences between day and night! Bring a light jacket and long pants even in summer, as mornings and evenings are cold. · Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen; UV rays are strong on the grassland. · Shoes: comfortable, non-slip sneakers; the grassland has a lot of dirt and grass. · Others: mosquito repellent, digestive medicine, moisturizing skincare products; the grassland climate is dry. ⚠️Notes & tips 1. Always choose official stables for horseback riding, agree on price and duration beforehand, and avoid riding private horses by the roadside. 2. Respect Mongolian customs: don’t step on yurt thresholds, don’t touch children’s heads casually; accept toasts with both hands. 3. Do not drive over the grassland to protect the pasture; carry out all trash. 4. Buy beef jerky and dairy products preferably at city supermarkets, as prices are higher in scenic areas. 5. Mobile signal is weak in some grassland areas; download offline maps in advance.

Northern Weapon City

The park isn't large; you can walk around in about two hours at a leisurely pace. The main attraction is the display of military equipment, all of which are real and can be handled up close. There's a VR project within the park, which I think is one of the better VR experiences offered in tourist attractions in recent years; FPS games are still far superior. The "tank" driving simulators in the park are actually miniature vehicles designed for children, but there are real ones too, though not in this area, but in the "Military Experience Base" diagonally across the path. While most of the equipment is accessible by standing on, there are some tanks and trains that are clearly marked "Do Not Climb," yet I still saw many children climbing on them. I hope everyone will be mindful of safety and avoid the risk of falls.

Chunkun Mountain

Chunkun Mountain is quite large, a great place to escape the summer heat with fresh air. Taking the sightseeing bus saves a lot of energy and time, as the main attractions and entertainment are all located at the sightseeing bus station. The mini-train is rather impractical; it only travels a short section parallel to the sightseeing bus route, and it's quite slow, returning the same way after a 20-minute ride. I don't recommend taking it.

Meidaizhao Monastery

This is a historically significant place. The scenic area isn't large; you can see everything in a little over an hour. The murals inside the main hall are quite beautiful and worth appreciating. If you're traveling from Baotou to Hohhot, it's worth a visit if it's on your way. It's very close to the highway exit, making it convenient to get there by car.

Xilamuren Grasslands

Saihantala Urban Grassland

Saihantala Grassland in Baotou. Saihantala (meaning "beautiful grassland" in Mongolian), a national 4A scenic area and Asia's largest original ecological grassland within a city, is located in the main urban area of Baotou. Tens of thousands of acres of grassland are embedded in the city, with high-rise buildings and grassland forming a unified view, earning it the title of Baotou's urban green lung and a city landmark. • Area: Approximately 10,680 acres (712 hectares), with a main ring road about 10 kilometers long. Admission is free, and it is open all day. A visit of 3-4 hours is recommended. • Location: Located within the city, easily accessible by subway and bus, allowing you to experience grassland scenery without long journeys. Must-see attractions: 1. Unique landscape: A blend of pristine sparse forest grassland, four sandy river wetlands, reed marshes, and red willow forests. Free-range cattle, sheep, deer, rabbits, and migratory birds roam the park. Scenes of grazing cattle and sheep are commonplace, and the viewing platform offers panoramic views of the grassland meadows and the city skyline. 2. Feed the deer at the Sacred Deer Park – a family-friendly activity; Walk clockwise around Aobao Mountain three times for blessings, experiencing a strong atmosphere of prayer flags; Cycle around the lake, stroll along the wetland boardwalk, or choose a sightseeing bus; Horse riding, archery, and enjoy authentic Mongolian cuisine like hand-pulled mutton and milk tea in a yurt; Regularly held folk activities include Aobao worship ceremonies and equestrian performances. 3. Important Notes: The park is large, and walking alone takes a long time; most people rent bicycles. There is no mandatory spending. Locals often come for camping, picnics, and leisure exercise. The scenery is distinct in all four seasons, with summer being the best time to visit due to its lush greenery. You can also rent a shared bicycle outside; a 10km ride is very comfortable, and watching the beautiful grassland sunset is quite pleasant and romantic. Both above-ground and underground parking are convenient.

Baotou Ancient City Cultural Tourist Area

You must go at night. There is really nothing to do during the day. There are many shows at night. The schedule is very full, one after another. Just follow the Guizhou Internet celebrities. If you like to watch shows at night, you can go there at 7 pm. Not bad

Baotou Museum

After riding in a Type 59 tank at the northern military base, I took a taxi to the Baotou Museum. I stumbled upon the art gallery on the first floor, admiring many paintings before finally reaching the main museum via a small staircase. The museum lobby was spacious, with three exhibition halls each on the second and third floors, arranged neatly yet compactly. I specifically visited the museum's prized possession, a national first-class cultural relic—a Jingdezhen kiln blue-and-white porcelain jar with a peony scroll design, valued at tens to two hundred million yuan. While the museum may not have a vast collection, there are certainly some exquisite pieces, making it worth the trip.
