Mangya Emerald Lake | The quiet green in the depths of the Gobi — traveler post in Golmud

Mangya Emerald Lake | The quiet green in the depths of the Gobi

Mangya Emerald Lake Whenever I think of Mangya, the first thing that comes to mind is this shade of green, and the silent stillness of everything around. The lake surface is smooth as a mirror, and even the wind seems to tread lightly. I visited at the end of September last year. The scenic area was still quite simple, with no fancy entrance gate, just small stalls selling stones at the entrance. After passing through security and walking a few steps, a pool of emerald suddenly caught my eye amidst the Gobi. Surrounded by gray-yellow Gobi and barren mountains where nothing grows, with dry winds blowing in my face, a green unique to salt lakes spread out beneath my feet. It is not the green of vegetation, but a gradient from light cyan to deep turquoise, like gemstones embedded in the surface of the wilderness. 📜 Quick facts Mangya Emerald Lake is a magnesium sulfate subtype artificial salt lake. It is located on the western edge of the Qaidam Basin, bordered by the Kunlun Mountains to the south and the Altun Mountains to the north, at an altitude of about 3,200 meters. This was originally a salt mining area. In the last century, minerals like potash and mirabilite were extracted here. After the mines were abandoned, they collected underground brine. The brine is rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and lithium. The concentration varies in different pools, and through the refraction of sunlight, it transforms into rich layers of green. The total area of the lake region is about 26 square kilometers. The rock salt layer at the bottom of the lake is 5 meters thick on average, with the thickest parts approaching 10 meters. The coral-like white salt flowers on the shore are salt crystals precipitated from the long-term evaporation of the brine. A pit left behind by industrial mining was eventually turned by nature into an emerald on the Gobi. The white salt paths wind and curve like a light-colored ribbon, extending into the boundless green. The lake water is very shallow, averaging only half a meter, and is crystal clear, allowing you to see the hard salt layer at the bottom. Because of its remote location, there are few tourists, making it clean and quiet—perfect for escaping the crowds and taking your time to soak it all in. When there is no wind, the mirror effect is superb, with shadows clearly reflected in the water, and even the colors of your clothes are visible in detail. ⚠️ The brine is a high-concentration salt solution and is corrosive. It is not drinkable, and you should try to avoid entering the water. If it splashes onto your skin, rinse it off immediately. Hold onto your phone and drone tightly. Rescue in the salt lake is difficult. 🚢 There are transparent boats available in the scenic area, which are great for photos. In some sections, the brine overflows the road, and old tires are laid out as walkways, with the surfaces of the tires also covered in white salt. The best season to visit is June–October. We came at the end of September, which was just right—the intense heat had faded, the autumn weather was crisp, and the water clarity was at its best. 📌 Tips ▪️ The salt flats have extremely strong reflections; be sure to bring sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat ▪️ The brine is corrosive; it is recommended to bring waterproof shoe covers and avoid soaking your skin for long periods ▪️ Located in Mangya, it is some distance from Huatugou Town; fill up your gas tank and stock up on drinking water in advance ▪️ It is windy and dry; keep your skin moisturized In the desolate Gobi, this silent and healing green is hidden away 🌿

Head to Qinghai and capture the vast plateau through your lens — traveler post in Golmud

Head to Qinghai and capture the vast plateau through your lens

I've always longed for the vastness of Qinghai, and I've finally set foot in this wilderness. There are no crowds here, only lakes, grasslands, Gobi deserts, and snow-capped mountains. Every frame is a masterpiece of nature. Scenery along the way: Qinghai Lake The deep blue lake water connects to the horizon, with grasslands spreading along the shore, and occasionally water birds skim across the surface. The wind blows from the lake, and all worries are instantly blown away. The autumn meadows glow with a light golden hue, giving photos a natural soft-focus filter. Mang'ai & Dachaidan Emerald Lake The salt lakes are like gems scattered across the Gobi, with crystal-clear green water separated by white salt ridges. Standing on the salt flats, the world is so quiet that only the wind remains. Qilian Mountain Grassland Rolling meadows stretch to the foot of the snow-capped mountains, with cattle and sheep scattered leisurely among them. The clouds hang low, as if you could reach out and touch them—a healing feeling unique to the plateau. U-Sut Water Yadan A rare water Yadan landform found nowhere else in the world, with yellowish-brown mounds standing in the blue lake. The coexistence of desert and water creates an immersive wilderness atmosphere. G315 National Highway The straight road stretches infinitely toward the horizon, flanked by the vast Gobi desert. The landscape is ever-changing, and every step of the way is a surprise. There's no need to rush your itinerary here; just take your time and watch the clouds drift by. The wilderness has its own power—this is the unique romance of Qinghai.

Visiting Qinghai for the first time? We recommend copying this travel route directly. — traveler post in Golmud

Visiting Qinghai for the first time? We recommend copying this travel route directly.

Not sure where to go this autumn? Why not consider Qinghai! Qinghai is stunning right now—it's on the next level! Qinghai Lake The scenery along the way is truly beautiful. We highly recommend the route from Dachaidan back to Xining, specifically the scenery along Huanhu West Road! Chaka Salt Lake It is divided into two scenic areas: Mirror of the Sky and Sky No. 1. The most popular attractions are the small train and the Mirror of the Sky at Chaka Salt Lake. Stepping barefoot into Chaka Salt Lake feels like falling into the reflection of the clouds. It is a bit more commercialized here; those interested can take a look around, but in terms of scenery, Emerald Lake is even more beautiful! Dachaidan Emerald Lake Highly recommended! The salt lake features blue, green, and yellow colors. From a drone's perspective, it really looks like emeralds and is very photogenic. It's like a palette spilled across the Northwest landscape, captivating at first sight! Water Yadan Yadan landforms are relatively common, but Water Yadan is truly unique. Countless Yadans of various sizes scattered across the blue lake look like warships at sea—it's quite spectacular! Other tips: Be sure to visit Qinghai on a sunny day, otherwise you won't see even a fraction of its beauty. We recommend bringing a drone, as the photos taken from the ground and from a bird's-eye view are quite different. The UV rays in the Northwest are strong, so we recommend taking sun protection and moisturizing measures. Attractions in the Northwest are far apart and the drives are long, so it's a good idea to pack some water and snacks for the car.

Where to stay in Da Qaidam for National Day? Read this — traveler post in Golmud

Where to stay in Da Qaidam for National Day? Read this

"For a National Day road trip, Da Qaidam is an unavoidable stopover. Accommodation is a top priority this time of year; pick the wrong hotel, and between altitude sickness and poor sleep, the rest of your trip is ruined. I checked out a place this time, so let's talk about whether it's actually reliable for high-altitude stays. Licheng Cuixing Hotel, Da Qaidam The room is spacious, and you can see the outline of the Qilian Mountains when you open the window. In late September, the Haixi area is dry and clear, and the distant mountain lines are as sharp as if cut by a knife. At night, there are few lights in the town, and you can see a blanket of stars when you look up. After a long day of driving, you can relax just by sitting by the window without even leaving the room. 🚗 It's located in the town area, but it's not noisy. It's only 650 meters to Emerald Pedestrian Street and just over 1 kilometer to Da Qaidam Light and Shadow City. Heading west to Mangya Emerald Lake or south to Water Yadan is well within driving range. Parking around the hotel is convenient, and you can walk to get food—He Zhanggui Shuanrou, Kelimu Kanguo, and Yagubai Shengkaoyangrou are all within 400 meters. Fengrui Shopping Center is 430 meters away, making it convenient to stock up on snacks and water. ✅ Here is the key point. The room is equipped with an oxygen concentrator and a humidifier, which are necessities at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. The air on the plateau is dry, which can make your nose and throat uncomfortable, but running the humidifier all night makes waking up the next day much more pleasant. Using the oxygen concentrator for half an hour before sleep helps reduce the likelihood of headaches. The bedding feels soft, and the room is spacious enough not to feel cramped. 🥣 Breakfast includes highland barley pastries and yak yogurt, offering a taste of the local area. If you are in a rush, you can get it to go, so you don't have to worry about timing. Overall, this is a worry-free choice for staying in Da Qaidam. Its high-altitude amenities are what set it apart from ordinary hotels. If you are traveling the Qinghai-Gansu loop for National Day, you might want to add this to your list for comparison. "

Chase the most vibrant autumn in the Northwest — traveler post in Golmud

Chase the most vibrant autumn in the Northwest

See the intense autumn in Northwest China🍂 If autumn had a color, it would surely be hidden in the Northwest. Unlike the gentle and delicate autumn of Jiangnan, autumn in the Northwest is vibrant, magnificent, healing, and lonely✨ From September–October, the Northwest features snow-capped mountains, salt lakes, the Gobi Desert, and thousands of acres of golden Populus euphratica all at once. It is the peak season of the year, and one that is truly worth the journey. 🏜️ Gobi Desert | The romance of the desolate wilderness 📍 Gansu/Inner Mongolia Alxa Gobi Desert As the summer heat fades, the autumn breeze in the Gobi is gentle. Endless yellow sand stretches to the horizon, with a view that knows no bounds. Without high-rise buildings to block the view or crowds to create noise, the vastness of heaven and earth can contain all your worries. The moment the wind blows across the wilderness, you instantly understand the meaning of freedom. 🌲 Populus euphratica | A 3,000-year-old autumn fairy tale 📍 Ejina Banner, Inner Mongolia; Jinta Populus euphratica forest, Gansu The soul of autumn in the Northwest must be the Populus euphratica! The entire forest is dyed a translucent, gilded yellow by the autumn breeze, brilliant to the point of dazzling. The Ruoshui River winds through the forest, and the golden branches and leaves are reflected on the lake surface🌊 The water, tree shadows, and blue sky merge into one; every frame feels like an oil painting. Dead trees stand tall in the Gobi, while the vibrant forest stretches out by the water. One side is desolate and tragic, the other is gentle and passionate—this is the unique autumn character of the Populus euphratica. 💙 Salt Lake | A pure autumn secret realm 📍 Qarhan Salt Lake, Qinghai; Chaka Salt Lake The salt lakes in autumn are cleaner and more translucent than in spring and summer. The clear blue lake water paired with pure white salt flats is so clean it doesn't have a speck of dust. The autumn breeze gently brushes the lake surface, and the ripples sway softly. The sky, clouds, and salt bridges are all reflected in the water. Walking through it feels like breaking into a mirror of the sky—so healing. 🏔️ Snow-capped mountains | The cool backdrop of autumn 📍 Qilian Mountains In early autumn, the mountain peaks are covered with a thin layer of snow, cold and holy. Below the mountain are golden grasslands and colorful forests, while the peaks are white snow—the contrast between cold and warm colors is extremely sophisticated. Looking up, you see continuous snow-capped mountains; looking down, you see endless autumn fields. The sense of depth is fully maximized. 💡 Tips for traveling in the Northwest in autumn ▪️ September–October is the best window! Fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, lower flight and accommodation prices, and you avoid the summer rush. ▪️ The temperature difference between day and night in the Northwest is significant. Wear long dresses for photos during the day, but be sure to bring a thick jacket for the evening. ▪️ The UV rays at the salt lakes are extremely strong; sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. ▪️ For photos in the Populus euphratica forest, light-colored and solid-colored outfits are the most photogenic, creating a perfect atmosphere. Autumn in the Northwest never disappoints. It is desolate, brilliant, vast, and healing❤️ You must head to the Northwest in autumn to experience the magnificent landscapes.

Chaerhan Salt Lake

It was a bit cloudy the day I went. It's the largest of the three salt lakes, and the apple-green water is beautiful. It's my top recommendation of the three; aside from not allowing swimming, it's much better than Chaka Salt Lake. It also has reflections, a true green mirror of the sky.

Wusute Yadan Geological Park

We came during the off-season and stayed at a hotel within the scenic area on October 30th. Staying at a hotel within the scenic area allows for two days of sightseeing, multiple rides on the sightseeing bus, and entry into the scenic area. The weather was great that day, and the scenery was beautiful. Due to time constraints, we visited each sightseeing bus stop first. The last stop was quite close to the hotel, and we could walk around to watch the sunset. On the morning of October 31st, we planned to go to the Eye of Yadan, but it got too cold, so we didn't go. The hotel breakfast during the off-season was average, with limited variety. The hotel room was quite large, though. There was cigarette ash on the bedside table and some dirt on the bed, so we immediately asked the staff to change the blankets.

Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve

Pros: The scenery is stunning: rolling alpine meadows, the majestic Kunlun Mountains, the desolate Gobi Desert, and the occasional sight of miraculous highland treasures like Tibetan wild donkeys and camels. These constantly resonate with our souls, evoking long-forgotten poetic and distant horizons. Cons: The road is far from the city, 160 kilometers from Golmud. Most importantly, the entire route is currently under construction, making it a five-hour drive. The road is bumpy and potholed, and several vehicles suffered punctures along the way. The altitude is high, nearly 4,800 meters, so be prepared for altitude sickness.

The Jade Pool of the Queen Mother of the West

This time I traveled along the coast to the west. I saw on the Internet that Queen Mother Yaochi is a must-visit attraction when going to Golmud. Because I heard that the road in the past was very bad, it took six hours to walk a hundred kilometers, so I went there with the mentality of giving it a try. I didn't expect that after I went there, I found that the road was repaired. It was a two-lane asphalt road. It started from Wuji Longfeng Palace and went west all the way. There was no speed limit throughout the journey (but it was best to drive 80 miles per hour). The tourist attractions on the road were all under construction. I didn't see people and cars along the way. The end of the road was Queen Mother Yaochi. As for the scenery, it was amazing. There were snow-capped mountains all the way, and I saw Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys. I gave up the Tibetan antelope viewing platform in Kekexili later because I saw them here. The only shortcoming was that after arriving at Queen Mother Yaochi, I didn't stop the car, walked around, and left directly. The reason was that there were so many mosquitoes under the sun in the daytime that they stopped on the car windows. I was scared and left immediately and didn't dare to get off the car. Fortunately, the scenery on the way there was amazing, and you could stop and take a rest (no mosquitoes). Except for mosquitoes, everything else was good. Recommended! ! !

Wanzhang Yanqiao Bridge

The G315 highway was under construction, so we arrived at the scenic area around 5:00 PM. We immediately entered and took a shuttle bus and electric car to the central attraction, Lotus Flower 🪷, just in time to capture the sunset. Even on the return trip, we couldn't stop to take photos of the sunset, the salt flowers, and the lake. The last bus to the scenic area left at 7:30 PM.

Jichang Garden

This is a small park in the oilfield residential area. It's hilarious! Who turned it into a tourist attraction?

Wuji Longfeng Palace

We passed by here on the way from Haixi to Golmud by car, beside the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The driver introduced this place to us. It is said that the temple houses statues of the Queen Mother of the West, the Lady of the Nine Heavens, and the Golden Saint Mother, as well as a statue of the Tenth Panchen Lama.
