Guanghan travel guide and discussion

Why Guanghan: Most travelers come for the Sanxingdui Museum, widely described as a mind‑blowing window into the ancient Shu civilization, with colossal bronze masks and the towering bronze “sacred tree” that feel nothing like a typical museum visit. Many even rank it more jaw‑dropping than the panda experience in Chengdu. One‑day game plan: A common, efficient loop is Panda Base in the morning, then lunch in Guanghan, and Sanxingdui Museum in the afternoon—pandas are most active early, while the museum’s lighting and pace suit a slower PM visit. Lunch in Guanghan for local staples like Jinsi noodles or Lianshan twice‑cooked pork keeps the day compact. Getting there and tickets: Most visitors take an 18‑minute high‑speed train from Chengdu to Guanghan North, then continue by bus or a short taxi to the museum; adult tickets are around RMB 72 with student discounts. Booking 3–5 days ahead via the official account is commonly advised, and Monday closures (holiday exceptions) plus last entry well before closing are noted by multiple visitors. On‑site tactics: Arrive before 9:00 or start with the less‑crowded halls, and allow 3–4 hours focusing on the Comprehensive/Bronze Halls—especially the bronze standing figure, protruding‑eye masks and the bronze “sacred tree,” with the XR gallery frequently praised. Comfortable shoes matter for the large layout, and many recommend the 30‑RMB audio guide or a docent while avoiding long detours in the gift shop.

An autumn break without the rush: half spent exploring civilization, half spent lounging in the courtyard. — traveler post in Guanghan

An autumn break without the rush: half spent exploring civilization, half spent lounging in the courtyard.

For our autumn break, we didn't want a packed itinerary. We took the kids to Sanxingdui and found the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway. The entire property is a Chinese-style lakeside garden, with white walls and winding corridors surrounding the water, and flat, easy-to-walk stone paths. The kids' favorite activity was crouching by the pond to feed the koi. Watching the fish swim over in schools kept them quietly entertained for ages. We chose a villa-style room with plenty of space for the kids to run around freely. The small courtyard even had a private hot spring—perfect for soaking away the fatigue after a long day of exploring. It felt very private. The grounds are incredibly atmospheric, perfect for photos. They even offer traditional costumes to try on, making it easy to capture some great traditional-style shots 📷 The food was mild and flavorful, with plenty of kid-friendly options. After dinner, we took a stroll along the lake, where the only sounds were the wind and birdsong—it was so healing. ✨A quick guide to visiting Sanxingdui with kids (kid-tested and approved) ▪️Book attraction tickets in advance. Release times are fixed, and there are basically no tickets available on-site, so be sure to set an alarm. ▪️When visiting with kids, I don't recommend relying on boring audio guides. Prioritize guided tours designed for children, as they are better at capturing their interest. ▪️Control the duration of your visit. About 3 hours is appropriate. You can return to your accommodation for a nap in the middle of the day to avoid the kids getting tired and fussy. ▪️There is a lot of walking inside the museum, so the whole family should wear comfortable, soft-soled shoes. You can also carry water bottles and small snacks with you. Our pace was: a slow morning at the museum, back to the garden for lunch and a nap, and then letting the kids play freely and soak in the hot spring in the evening. The kids had space to play, and the adults could finally breathe a sigh of relief. This is what a comfortable family vacation should feel like.

Chengdu Autumn Break Family Trip | Explore Sanxingdui, Stay in a Garden Villa with Private Hot Spring~ — traveler post in Guanghan

Chengdu Autumn Break Family Trip | Explore Sanxingdui, Stay in a Garden Villa with Private Hot Spring~

🏺Took the kids to Guanghan for the autumn break, starting a family autumn exploration of ancient Shu. Before we left, I booked Sanxingdui attraction tickets on the official WeChat account and rented a children's audio guide. Obscure ancient Shu stories turned into fun legends the kids could understand. The Bronze Mask with Protruding Eyes, the Bronze Sacred Tree, and the Gold Mask—exhibit after exhibit unfolded before our eyes, and the kids' eyes were full of wonder. 🌿After visiting the museum, we headed to the nearby Sanxing Lake. Large, flat lawns, lakeside greenways, and egrets occasionally flying over the lake. Without the crowds, the kids could run freely and fly kites. Walking slowly along the wooden boardwalk, feeling the gentle autumn breeze, it was the perfect way to shake off the fatigue from visiting Sanxingdui. The historical depth and the relaxation of nature blend gently here. 🍂In the evening, we checked into the Zhuangsheng Xiaoyue Garden Hotel and chose the Yinyuan Garden View Private Hot Spring Family Villa. Hidden in a Chinese-style garden, the villa is quiet and elegant, with its own private courtyard hot spring. It's spacious, making it very comfortable for the whole family to stay. White walls, winding corridors, flowing water, and koi fish—every step is a view. The kids loved chasing the little fish in the courtyard. ♨️After settling in at night, the family soaked in the private courtyard hot spring. The privacy was excellent, washing away the fatigue of a day of traveling. The warm water melted away our tiredness, the kids laughed and played in the water, and we chatted quietly, savoring the joy of exploring ancient Shu during the day. The resort environment is quiet, the amenities are thoughtful, and it's very close to Sanxingdui, making it very convenient for our departure the next day. 🍁The romance of the thousand-year-old ancient Shu is hidden in the bronze artifacts, and also in the gentle moments by the autumn lake and the courtyard hot spring. Accompanying the kids to touch a distant civilization and unwinding in nature—this is the most precious family memory of the autumn break.

I thought Huanglongxi was beautiful, until I visited Qijiang — traveler post in Guanghan

I thought Huanglongxi was beautiful, until I visited Qijiang

Sichuan is home to many ancient towns, but most have been heavily remodeled to mimic Lijiang, gradually losing their soul. Fortunately, Qijiang Ancient Town remains, having largely preserved its original character. · Qijiang was the capital of the State of Qi during the pre-Qin period. Qixian County was established here in the sixth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty, and it later served as the seat of the Dongguanghan Commandery during the Shu Han period, and the seat of Feiwu County during the Sui and Tang dynasties. For over 2,000 years, the administrative seat has never moved. The town rose to prominence due to the salt industry, but its remote location caused it to be left behind by the times, which, ironically, allowed it to preserve its roots. An old saying recorded in the "Santai County Annals"—"Three lions raise their heads to gaze at the Golden Bell, nine dragons swim against the current to worship the Golden Palace"—describes the layout of this town. · The old street is short, stretching just over 600 meters and about 3 meters wide. Ming and Qing dynasty wooden houses with blue-tiled roofs line the street, their eaves extending toward the center. Wooden pillars support a corridor that runs the entire length of the street. Beneath this corridor, the daily life of Qijiang unfolds—people drinking tea, chatting, and weaving bamboo baskets. On market days, the street is filled with stalls selling vegetables, meat, snacks, and general goods. Walking along the street, you can still find small shops offering haircuts, tooth extractions, and cupping therapy, with old-fashioned barber chairs that have been in use for decades. · Wangye Temple is located in the middle of the street. While its entrance looks unassuming, its history is significant. It was originally the City God Temple of Feiwu County during the Sui and Tang dynasties and was rebuilt on the same site after the "Huguang fills Sichuan" migration. The existing main structure is the oldest wooden building complex in Qijiang. The "Wangye" worshipped here is actually the City God. However, because Qijiang is bordered by the Qi River to the south and the Jin River to the east, its low-lying terrain was prone to flooding. The City God's primary duty here was to "suppress the river" (Zhenjiang), which is why the locals call it the Zhenjiang Wangye Temple. · Two giant banyan trees in the temple are a sight to behold: one has roots wrapping around a stone, and the other has a stone wrapped by roots. Locals call them "tree hugging stone" and "stone wrapping tree," and they have guarded the temple gate for centuries. The back of the temple's stage features over a dozen ink inscriptions dating from the 10th year of the Daoguang reign to the 24th year of the Republic of China, all recording Sichuan opera performances. Unfortunately, the stage is rarely used today. However, it is said that the City God Temple Fair, held on the 28th day of the fifth lunar month, is still active. As a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage, the City God's procession to pray for rain remains the liveliest day of the year for the old street. · Jiulong Bridge spans the Qijiang River outside the town, connecting Qijiang Town in Santai County with Wanfu Town in Zhongjiang County. The old bridge is a bit far from the old street, requiring a walk along a riverside path. The first sight of Jiulong Bridge is truly stunning: a flat-beam stone bridge with nine piers and ten spans. Each pier is carved from a single stone into the shape of a dragon, with nine dragons lying with their heads raised against the current. The bridge was built during the mid-to-late Qianlong or early Jiaqing reign, funded entirely by a local named Li Shiguang. However, upon closer inspection, the bridge is no longer entirely original. It appears that only three of the dragons are ancient; otherwise, it would certainly deserve status as a national heritage site. · If the cliff tombs were carved by the Han people for the afterlife, and the old street is where the living have spent two thousand years, then this old bridge is the path that people from both counties have walked for three hundred years. Together, they form the unique story of Qijiang. · Name: Qijiang Ancient Town Admission: Free Address: Qijiang Town, Santai County, Mianyang City

This hotel is located near Chunxi Road in downtown Chengdu, offering a prime location with convenient transportation, while also showing exceptional attention to detail in its design. The hotel occupies the 48th floor and above. Stepping into the lobby, you are immediately immersed in the rich charm of the Republic of China era. Sanxingdui National Archaeological Site Park

The Sanxingdui Archaeological Site Park is mainly composed of three exhibition areas, namely "Western City Wall Relics", "Yan Family Courtyard·Moon Bay" and "Sanxingdui·Sacrificial Pit·Archaeological Work Station", and the Sanxingdui Museum, which basically displays the cultural features and development level of the ancient Shu culture. In 2010, the Sanxingdui Archaeological Site Park became one of the first "National Archaeological Site Parks".

Sanxingdui Site

Sanxingdui Site – The Origin of the Yangtze River Civilization, a Site That Shook the World. Located on the south bank of the Yazi River in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, the site covers an area of 12 km², with the core ancient city covering approximately 3.6 km². It is the largest, most complete, and longest-lasting ancient Shu capital site discovered in Southwest China to date. Latest Archaeological Progress (to be released in 2025): Precise Dating: Sacrificial pits 3, 4, 6, and 8 have a 95.4% probability of dating to 1201–1012 BC (Late Shang Dynasty). Artifacts from pits 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 can be pieced together, confirming they were buried at the same time. New Casting Techniques: The "core-strip core support" bronze casting method was discovered for the first time, filling a gap in Chinese Bronze Age technology. Gold Usage: The total weight of unearthed gold artifacts exceeds 2 kg, the highest in China for the same period; gold masks and gold foil ornaments were refined using a gold-silver alloy and ash blowing method. Silk Traces: Silk residue was detected in multiple sacrificial pits, proving that people wore gold and brocade 3,000 years ago. Key artifacts: A large bronze mask (131 cm wide, weighing 131 catties, the world's largest Shang Dynasty bronze mask); a gold-masked bronze human head (42.5 cm, made from gold-plated wood, with openwork eyes and eyebrows); and over 5,000 other artifacts including a bronze sacred tree, a bird-shaped bronze bell, ivory carvings, and jade cong, showcasing the unique cosmology of the ancient Shu Kingdom. Sanxingdui buried the ancient Shu Kingdom's gold mask, bronze sacred tree, and silk sacrificial robes in late Shang Dynasty sacrificial pits. Their discovery today serves as the most dazzling evidence that the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers are both part of the mother river of Chinese civilization.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu research base of giant panda breeding is really good to visit if you don’t have much time in Chengdu! I entered 8am through the western gate, as it’s quieter than the south entry. I chose to do a walking route, not the shuttle. The initial area in panda valley did not have many pandas and the glass barriers outside had condensate so you couldn’t see through even if you wanted. So this area was a bit disappointing but after moving onto the panda Forrest area the scenery was better and there was LOTS of pandas to see eating and being active, GO EARLY! I went the west > south route as I didn’t care to see Huahua, the lines can get busy and by the time I got to the South Gate there was lots of tours, students on school trips etc. entering from the west ment I had a bit of time to myself and low crowds!

Fanghu Park

A very exquisite small park, with pavilions, corridors, red walls, pagodas, artificial lakes, rockery, botanical gardens, rich content, and it can be seen that it is managed seriously. A small city with such an exquisite small park shows that it has some heritage. One side of the park is surrounded by the old city wall, and you can take a walk on the city wall. On the other side, it is close to the Confucian Temple of Guanghan, which is larger than the Confucian Temples in other small places and well protected. Confucius sat well inside. It closed very early and was sent out by the uncle at five o'clock. Go straight out of the back door of the park and turn right at the first intersection. There is a well-known pot cake shop. It is estimated that the meat is better to eat now. The brown sugar one is too hard to bite. If you don't turn right and go straight to the second intersection, there is a Sanxingdui theme post office. It's so annoying. I turned back ten meters away from here. The next time I saw this post office, I was sitting on a bus and whizzing past! By the way, that park may be more comfortable in summer, with large lotus flowers. If you spend most of the day in Sanxingdui, it would be a good idea to take bus No. 6 to this small park and the surrounding area for an hour or two, and then take another bus to the high-speed rail station!
