Wuwei Haicang Temple Avoidance Guide: How to Best Spend These Days This guide is compiled from publicly available information and common travel tips; all content is objective and for reference only. Wuwei Haicang Temple is located in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. It is one of the most complete existing Buddhist architectural complexes in the Hexi Corridor. Surrounded by springs and ancient trees, it is also known locally as the "Liangzhou Imperial Palace." Key attractions include Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, Buddhist cultural relics, and unique forest and spring landscapes. Haicang Temple was first built in the Jin Dynasty, and most of the existing buildings are reconstructions from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Gansu Province. Historically, it was an important Buddhist activity site in the Hexi region. The temple preserves many cultural relics, including Ming dynasty stone tablets and Qing dynasty plaques, and is an important carrier for understanding Liangzhou Buddhist culture and ancient architectural art. The Haicang Lake Wetland Park next to the temple is connected to the temple landscape, forming a scenic area that combines culture and nature. Key attractions ⭐ Mountain Gate and Hall of Heavenly Kings: The mountain gate at the temple entrance is a Qing Dynasty building with exquisitely carved stone lions on both sides. Upon entering, you'll first see the Hall of Heavenly Kings, where the original statues are well-preserved. The Ming Dynasty stele inscription at the entrance, "Record of the Reconstruction of Haicang Temple," documents the temple's history; it's recommended to spend 10 minutes reading it carefully. Mahavira Hall: The core building of the temple, three bays wide, with a double-eaved hip roof. The beams inside retain Qing Dynasty painted decorations, and the brick carvings on the roof ridge are rich in detail. It is a typical representative of ancient architecture in Hexi Corridor. Recommendation rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lingjun Terrace: Located at the rear of the temple, this ancient terrace was built during the Western Jin Dynasty. A Bodhisattva Hall is built on the terrace. Climbing the terrace offers a panoramic view of the entire temple and surrounding wetland landscape, making it an excellent spot for taking photos. Recommendation rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Temple Springs: Several natural springs flow year-round on the east side of the temple. Surrounded by ancient willows, the springs are particularly cool in summer, perfect for a stroll. Recommendation rating: ⭐⭐⭐ Practical Avoidance Guide ⚠️ Opening Hours: The temple's regular opening hours are 8:00-18:00. On the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, it opens earlier at 6:00. Entry stops at 17:30. It is recommended to avoid visiting during midday to avoid strong sunlight affecting the visitor experience. Ticket Information: Admission to Haicang Temple is free on weekdays. There are no mandatory purchases inside the temple. Please do not buy overpriced incense and candles from street vendors outside the temple. Free incense is available inside the temple. Visitor Etiquette: As a religious site, please do not touch Buddha statues or photograph sculptures inside the halls. Avoid overly revealing clothing and refrain from loud noise during your visit. Transportation: From the city center, take bus route 6 directly to Haicang Temple Station (approximately 20 minutes). A taxi from the city center costs approximately 10 yuan. Visitors driving can park in the free parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area; there is no need to use the paid private parking areas nearby. Surrounding Area: A visit to Haicang Temple is recommended to last 1.5-2 hours. After your visit, you can walk to the adjacent Haicang Lake Wetland Park, which is free to enter and suitable for strolling and sightseeing. The entire trip can be completed in half a day; no full day is required. Wuwei Haicang Temple is suitable for tourists interested in Buddhist culture and ancient architecture, as well as those who want to avoid crowds and experience a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. No need to follow commercial guides; simply follow the signs to complete the entire tour. Wuwei Tourism Hexi Corridor Travel Lesser-Known Attractions in Gansu

Winter Trip to the Hexi Corridor | 5-Day Off-Season Silk Road Guide — traveler post in Wuwei

Winter Trip to the Hexi Corridor | 5-Day Off-Season Silk Road Guide

Stop waiting for summer to visit the Hexi Corridor; winter is when it truly tells its story. With the crowds gone, the Gobi Desert, ancient passes, and grottoes are peaceful. The Danxia landforms are dusted with light snow, and the vast desert is frosted with ice. Without the long lines, you can calmly connect with thousand-year-old relics. The off-season experience is excellent—the pace is relaxed, perfect for those who want to slow down and truly feel the Silk Road. Here is a classic 5-day itinerary that balances culture and scenery👇 📅Day 1: Lanzhou – Tianti Mountain Grottoes – Leitai Han Tomb | Stay in Wuwei Departing west from Lanzhou, visit the Tianti Mountain Grottoes, where the lake and the Great Buddha are exceptionally serene under the winter sky. In the afternoon, explore the Leitai Han Tomb to appreciate the Han Dynasty cultural heritage of Liangzhou. Stay overnight in Wuwei to rest up. 📅Day 2: Wuwei – Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple – Colorful Danxia | Stay in Zhangye Spend the morning at the Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple, feeling the weight of Western Xia history within the ancient temple. In the afternoon, head to Colorful Danxia. Snow resting on the colorful mountains creates a red-and-white contrast unique to winter. The atmosphere at sunset is incredible. Stay overnight in Zhangye. 📅Day 3: Zhangye – Jiayuguan Pass – First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall – Overhanging Great Wall – Son of the Gobi | Stay in Dunhuang Check off the Great Wall sites along the route. The majestic pass, beacon towers, and the Overhanging Great Wall look even more vast and desolate in the cold wind. Pass by the "Son of the Gobi" sculpture, standing quietly in the wilderness. Continue heading west and arrive in Dunhuang by evening. 📅Day 4: Mogao Caves – Dunhuang Museum – Mingsha Mountain | Stay in Dunhuang Visiting the Mogao Caves in the off-season is much more relaxed, allowing you to take your time admiring the murals and painted sculptures. Explore the Dunhuang Museum to piece together the stories of the Silk Road. In the evening, head to Mingsha Mountain. The dunes are cold and quiet; if you catch a snowfall, it’s a limited-edition view. Watch a peaceful desert sunset. 📅Day 5: Dunhuang trip ends, airport transfer for departure After this journey, you will have seen the grottoes, the Great Wall, the Danxia landforms, and the vast desert—a perfect, quiet conclusion to your Silk Road trip. ⚠️Key Tips for Winter Travel ▪️Clothing: Temperatures are low and it is windy. Bring a thick down jacket, fleece-lined pants, non-slip shoes, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Pack hand warmers. Cameras and phones drain battery quickly in low temperatures, so keep batteries close to your body. ▪️Climate: It is extremely dry. Stay hydrated throughout the trip. Bring lip balm, hand cream, and moisturizing masks. The reflection from the snow is strong, so sunglasses are a must. ▪️Road Conditions: Distances are long, and black ice can easily form in the morning and evening. Check the weather before traveling, drive cautiously, and try to avoid driving at night. ▪️Tickets: It is the off-season, so some scenic spots may have adjusted opening hours. It is still recommended to book the Mogao Caves in advance. ▪️Other: Signal can be unstable in the Gobi region, so download offline maps in advance. Bring drinking water and small snacks.

2 days and 1 night: I found the living history of Northwest China in Wuwei — traveler post in Wuwei

2 days and 1 night: I found the living history of Northwest China in Wuwei

Wuwei, located at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor, was historically known as Liangzhou. It was named to honor the military might and prestige of the Han Dynasty. This is the place where the symbol of China's tourism was unearthed. It is home to royal grottoes that predate the Mogao Caves. It holds a stone tablet that cracked the code of the Western Xia script. It was the site of a historic alliance that changed the map of China. With 5 major national historical and cultural sites, over 100 protected cultural sites at various levels, and tens of thousands of precious artifacts, this small northwestern city contains a condensed history of half of China. · 👉🏻 Itinerary 1️⃣ Day 1: Haizang Temple (no admission fee) — Wuwei Museum (no reservation required, swipe ID card) — Beiguan Market (dining) — Leitai Han Tomb (site where the Bronze Galloping Horse was unearthed) — South City Gate Tower 2️⃣ Day 2: Kumarajiva Temple (no admission fee) — Dayun Temple — Wuwei City Wall Ruins Square — Wuwei Confucian Temple — Western Xia Museum Don't be intimidated by the number of stops each day; because every attraction is very close by, you can just rent an e-bike in Wuwei city. The only exception is Haizang Temple, which is north of the city center. · — Some personal favorite attractions 1️⃣ Wuwei Museum: If you enjoy grottoes or Han culture, you must visit this museum. It not only has many bronze artifacts but also features a special exhibition on the Tiantishan Grottoes and replicas from the Jinta Temple Grottoes. No reservation is needed; just swipe your ID card to enter. 2️⃣ Dayun Temple: A Tang Dynasty bell that has resonated through Liangzhou for 1,300 years. The "Morning Bell at Dayun Temple," one of the eight famous sights of Liangzhou in the Qing Dynasty, refers to this place. Inside the temple is a Tang Dynasty alloy bronze bell—the only original artifact that has survived a thousand years of earthquakes and wars. You can also climb the bell tower for a bird's-eye view of the Wuwei cityscape for an admission fee of just 10 yuan. 3️⃣ Wuwei Confucian Temple: First built in the second year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty, it is over 500 years old. Known as the crown of Longyou academies, it is ranked alongside the Confucius Temple in Qufu and the Jianshui Confucian Temple as one of the three major Confucius temples in China. The 44 giant plaques hanging under the eaves of the Guiji Hall in the Wenchang Palace are particularly stunning, though I personally find the 40 yuan admission fee a bit pricey. 4️⃣ Wuwei South Gate Tower: A landmark of Wuwei. It lights up at night for a beautiful view, and you can climb it for free during the day. Inside, there is a Five Liang Culture Museum. While most items are replicas, it is very helpful for understanding the Five Liang culture and the history of the Hexi Corridor. · . About transportation: I arrived at Wuwei Station, which is close to the city center and attractions. About food: Wuwei barbecue, "three-piece set" (San Tao Che), sweet embryo (Tian Pei Zi), and apricot skin tea. If you have time, I recommend browsing the local Xinle Supermarket; it has many snacks and delicious foods. · — I am Baiyang, and my guides for the Hexi Corridor are being updated continuously❗

Grotto photo spots — traveler post in Wuwei

Grotto photo spots

📸 [How to capture this route] When shooting Tianti Mountain, the main subjects are the Giant Buddha and the reservoir: Stand in front of the main grotto and shoot upwards to capture the imposing scale of the Buddha. Move to a higher spot on the side to capture the Buddha and the reservoir in the same frame, where the red sandstone cliffs, water surface, and Buddha statue create a contrast between stillness and movement. The statues and mural details in the exhibition hall are perfect for macro or close-up shots. The entire set of photos will have both the solemnity of the Buddha and the vastness of the landscape, creating great depth. 📷 [Shooting tips] Morning light is favorable, making the cliff colors warm and the Buddha's outline clear. Afternoon angled light is great for capturing the texture of the cliffs and the depth of the Buddha. The light inside the grotto is dim, so use night mode on your phone and try to avoid using flash directly on the artifacts. When shooting upwards from the foot of the Buddha, stand further back and lower your camera angle to better emphasize the height of the statue. After viewing, remember to compare what you saw in the exhibition hall, where you can see the actual statues alongside the historical context for a deeper understanding. ☀️ [Composition advice] Use the grotto entrance as a frame and shoot the Buddha through it for a more artistic composition. Stand by the reservoir and look back at the entire cliff face to capture the reflection on the water, which is a unique shot here. When the water is calm in the evening, the reflection of the Buddha is also worth waiting for. 📌 [Gear reminder] The Gobi climate is dry and windy, so bring sunglasses and sunscreen. It is windy near the cliffs, so keep your footing while shooting. It is cool in the morning and evening in autumn, but sunny at noon, so prepare both a jacket and sun protection. Opening hours are subject to the scenic area's daily announcements.

On a whim, I drove over 1,100 km from Chongqing, taking 13 hours to head straight to Gansu

🚗 Oct 4: Left Jiangbeizui, Chongqing at 6:45 AM. The road was clear the whole way—just driving and stopping for breaks at service areas! Got stuck in traffic for half an hour near Lanzhou, but finally arrived at a hand-grabbed lamb restaurant in Tianzhu County at 8:45 PM. Of the two days I've spent in Gansu, the meat in Tianzhu was the best! 🐑 The meat was so tender—one bite and it was legendary! 🍁 Oct 5: Originally planned to visit Tanyao Valley, Wushaoling, Qianjin, and Tiantishan Grottoes, but there was so much beautiful scenery along the way that it was already 7:00 PM by the time I reached the Tiantishan Grottoes! Where did the time go? It was stolen by the scenery~ ✨ 🐱 P1-3: Taken at Haxi Qianjin! The snow-capped mountains, streams, and golden poplar forests under the sun were breathtaking! Every shot is wallpaper-worthy 📸 🐰 P4-14: Tanyao Valley! Arrived at 8:00 AM with the first group of tourists and was left speechless by the stunning scenery! The Mayashan Snow Mountain was in full view 🏔️ I was so lucky—it snowed the day before, and today it cleared up! Rode a horse up the mountain. The horse handler was super fun and helped me take photos along the way; it was such a joy to stop and explore. I even ran into some bouncing prairie chickens 😂 It was also super fun to pay CNY 10 to hold a lamb for photos. The lamb was clean, soft, and smelled great—my heart just melted holding it 🥹 I played in Tanyao Valley from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM before reluctantly leaving. 🐻 P15: Wushaoling! Continued riding horses up the mountain, though here it was purely for transportation. Reaching the summit, I could see the entire snow-capped mountain range. My phone couldn't capture how breathtaking it was—you just have to experience it for yourself! After heading down, I found a hand-grabbed lamb restaurant to refuel, continued on to Qianjin, and finally rested at a hotel near the Tiantishan Grottoes~ Tomorrow, I'll continue my autumn-seeking trip in Wuwei! Looking forward to more surprises ✨

Hey everyone! You guys, I'm obsessed! Unexpected scenery like this is the best surprise🥹 The best part is that it's not crowded at all, so you don't have to worry about fighting the crowds ⏰Suggested visit time: 2–3 hours Highly recommend coming after 4 PM for the most gorgeous lighting You can see the stunning reflection of the snow-capped mountains on the lake surface💫 It really feels like love at first sight; I've been healed by the beauty of nature This hidden gem in the Northwest is the GOAT!

National Day off‑the‑beaten‑path city trip|4 days 3 nights Wuwei guide Wuwei

Who understands a southern kid's obsession with the far northwest! Spotted Wuwei, a hidden gem: rich history and all kinds of landforms (grassland/desert/snowy mountains all in one), hotels don't hike prices for National Day, so go for it~ 📝 4-day itinerary DAY 1 Binggou River scenic area · Buy the sightseeing bus ticket to the "Ten-Mile Gallery", hike 1 km, turn back when you see a marmot, focus on strolling Malan flower prairie + forest sea, perfect blue skies and clouds for photos📸 · ⚠️ There are few and distant bus stops; you can only get on/off at official stops, plan your route in advance · Tickets 110 + shuttle 50 ≈ day tour, you can compare prices yourself DAY 2 desert area · Free shuttle during National Day (4 PM is the hottest, go later to avoid the sun) · Choose Toudaocao Desert (fewest people, no lines for activities/photos); Wuwei desert area is busier but has bonfires and fireworks · ⚠️ Toudaocao has dry toilets, Wuwei desert area has flush toilets but long lines; go early! If you go late, you’ll wait for sandboarding and camels 🐫 DAY 3 Wuqiaoling day trip Classic route, carpooling has no price markup! ◦ Baita Temple opens at 8:00 AM, book online to get in early and enjoy the peace🏯 ◦ At Tiantishan, check the reservoir first (the Qilian reflection is amazing), the park toilets were broken but staff apologized with mooncakes—very sincere! ◦ Snowy mountains depend on the weather! We only saw them clearly right before we left❄️ DAY 4 City walk · Line up at 6:30 AM for rice soup and youtiao (stalls close at 8:00 AM, savory flavor pairs with mahua) · Visit the city museum (great lighting, few people, free luggage storage) + Confucian temple + Kumarajiva temple · The south city gate tower has community performances, and the streets are lively like a holiday 🎉 🍜 Food highlights 1️⃣ Lao Wang's Caiguozi Waited 1 hour; the rolled pancake and fried dough were surprisingly good! 2️⃣ Yixing hand‑pulled lamb I usually don't eat lamb, but for the first time I tasted a milky aroma! Recommend ordering with a group 3️⃣ Hexuan specialty mala tang Very unique, big portions, cheap, and tasty! 4️⃣ Brothers' grill Well marinated! Each skewer tastes different, and the vegetarian skewers smell even better than the meat ones 5️⃣ Guo cold noodles Meat cold noodles have a rich braised flavor (like da lu mian), vegetarian cold noodles are sweet and tangy and refreshing; Ren cold noodles are said to be good too 6️⃣ Chengji mianpi 6 yuan a bowl, locals buy two big bags to go, the long strips soak up flavor better and they sell out before noon ⚠️ Practical tips 👗 What to wear: big temperature differences between day and night Windbreaker + down liner + sweat‑wicking long sleeves are enough; the thick down jacket I brought wasn't needed 💧 Moisturizing: so dry it can cause nosebleeds!! Bring full moisturizing gear 🚗 Transport 1. High-speed rail: first arrive at Lanzhou station → 30-minute metro to Lanzhou West station → transfer to high-speed rail to Wuwei East station 2. In town: taxi flag‑fall is 5 yuan! But taxis are hard to get during rush hour. There are lots of shared e-scooters 🏨 Accommodation · Stay near the south city gate tower for easy access everywhere · Book ahead! City hotels fill up a few days before National Day, the government temporarily opened party school dorms, very user‑friendly 👍 💡 Summary Really liked Wuwei — slow pace, sincere people, beautiful sites without crowds, culture and nature both on point, convenient transport without needing to charter a car! I'll go again next time~

Haicang Temple — traveler post in Wuwei

Haicang Temple

Haicang Temple is an ancient temple with a history of over a thousand years, hidden in the northwest of Liangzhou. Admission is free, and it is very convenient to visit after exploring the Haicang Wetland Park. The temple was first built during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The core structure, Lingjun Terrace, dates back over 1,700 years. The wooden archway at the entrance, inscribed with "Haicang Chanlin" and dating back to the Ming Dynasty, remains intact despite major earthquakes, carrying a profound sense of history. Inside the courtyard, ancient cypresses tower overhead, and the halls are simple and serene. There are few tourists, so it feels neither noisy nor crowded. This is the site of "Haicang Misty Willows," one of the eight scenic spots of Liangzhou, and a testament to the fusion of Han and Tibetan cultures along the Silk Road. Walking slowly along the central axis to the high Lingjun Terrace, you can overlook the entire courtyard landscape. Compared to bustling tourist attractions, this place is better suited for a quiet stroll to feel the passage of time. The ancient temple is connected to the wetland park, where vegetation is lush. After visiting Luoshi Temple, you can plan a trip here to experience a different kind of ancient Liangzhou charm.

Qilian Mountains Binggou River Scenic Area

I went during the National Day Golden Week holiday and stepped into the autumn of the Qilian Mountains. The golden grasslands, the melting snow from the glaciers, and the dense forests were breathtaking. I took photos every step of the way. The only regret was not being able to climb to Tianchi Lake. I will definitely come back next time.

Tiantishan Grottoes

The Tiantishan Grottoes are truly worth seeing, as they are considered the ancestor of all grottoes. The surrounding environment is also very tranquil, and the scenery around the reservoir is exceptionally beautiful, like a traditional Chinese ink painting. The scenery is also very picturesque. Free parking is available within the scenic area.

Wuwei Confucius Temple

Revered as the crown jewel of Longyou Confucian temples, this is the largest and best-preserved Confucian temple in Northwest China. Construction began during the Zhengtong era of the Ming Dynasty, nearly 600 years ago. Its unique layout, combining temple and academy (Wenchang Palace + Confucius Temple + Confucian Academy), is quite distinctive. The biggest highlight is the dozens of ancient plaques in the Guiji Hall, spanning from the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period. The calligraphy is rich and varied, with two particularly noteworthy plaques: "The City Never Sleeps" and "Gathering Talent and Promoting Discipline," both renowned in China, showcasing exceptional calligraphic quality and well worth close examination. The courtyard is filled with ancient cypress trees, red walls, and gray tiles, offering a tranquil and serene atmosphere, rarely crowded, making it perfect for taking photos. Located in the city center, not far from the Leitai Han Tomb, it's a convenient stop along the way, ideal for tourists interested in history, calligraphy, and ancient architecture. The Pan Pond and Zhuangyuan Bridge are worth a stroll, symbolizing success in the imperial examinations.

Leitai Han Culture Museum

The Leitai Han Tomb, located in Wuwei, Gansu Province, is the site where the iconic "Flying Horse of Gansu" (bronze galloping horse) was unearthed, a symbol of Chinese tourism. Above ground lies the Leitai Temple, a Taoist holy site from the Ming and Qing dynasties, while underground lies a Han Dynasty tomb dating back nearly two thousand years. The main attractions are threefold: First, the national treasure, the bronze galloping horse (Flying Horse of Gansu), currently housed in the Gansu Provincial Museum. Second, the bronze chariot and horse procession, composed of 99 bronze figurines (including warriors, servants, chariots, and horses), is the largest Eastern Han Dynasty bronze chariot and horse procession discovered to date, recreating the grandeur of the tomb's occupant, "Zhang Jun" (who held the official position of "Governor of Zhangye"). Third, the ancient Han Dynasty well, where coins thrown in appear magnified due to perspective and optical principles. The tomb is low and cramped, requiring visitors to crouch in many places.

Liangzhou Baita Temple

This is a good place to learn about the history of the Liangzhou Alliance, where Sakya Pandita and Godan made contributions to the sovereignty of Tibet. The park is very large and clearly well-designed, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Be sure to visit the ancient pagoda at the very back to experience the historical charm. The memorial hall, which recreates historical events, is also worth a visit. The withered lotus flowers in the lotus pond also complement the scene. The cultural and creative products are a bit lacking.

I stopped here while driving by. The hike was fairly easy, with wooden boardwalks throughout. The last platform had a sign indicating it was where three plateaus met. However, the snow on the opposite mountain had already melted at this time of year. The scenic area is great because it's free, so stopping by was no problem at all; you can finish in about an hour if you're quick. Later, while driving, I also saw several sections of the Great Wall, supposedly ruins of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Those interested can check them out.

Wuwei Kumarajiva Temple

You might not be familiar with the name Kumarajiva, but words like "affliction," "love," and "moment" that come to mind so readily, all originate from this eminent monk from the Western Regions—Kumarajiva—more than 1600 years ago. He resided in Liangzhou for seventeen years, during which time he vigorously promoted Buddhism, translated numerous Buddhist scriptures, and made indelible contributions to the development of Chinese Buddhism.

Maya Snow Mountain

Taking kids to see the Maya Snow Mountain? A distant view is enough! The jagged, snow-capped mountain stands majestically before you, a truly breathtaking sight. No need for a long hike; simply park along the roadside to admire the view, making it incredibly family-friendly. Climbing to the summit would be quite challenging, so enjoying the scenery from afar with children is perfect. The journey follows the Hexi Corridor, with snow-capped mountains paired with grasslands, creating a rich and varied landscape. Stop along the way to take photos and experience the unique grandeur of Northwest China.

Wuwei Museum

The Wuwei City Museum truly lives up to its reputation as a national first-class museum. The richness of its collection and the sheer number of its treasures are truly eye-opening! Unfortunately, the original bronze galloping horse was taken by the Gansu Provincial Museum, so only a replica can be seen here, which is somewhat disappointing. However, the museum still boasts a wealth of Buddha heads and statues, as well as various precious cultural relics, ranging from Han Dynasty bamboo slips to Western Xia artifacts—each piece is worth careful appreciation. Admission is free, so don't miss it when you visit Wuwei!
