I drove an extra 200 km for this autumn chase. — traveler post in Yanji

I drove an extra 200 km for this autumn chase.

How can you not take a road trip on the G331 during autumn at Changbai Mountain? Straight to the point! 🚗 Erdaobaihe Town > Changbai Mountain North Scenic Area > (scenery in the photos is on this stretch) > Chongshan Town > Junjianshan > Nanping Town > Baijin Township > Sanhe Town > Tumen/Yanji ⏰ The whole trip is about 350 km and takes about 7–8 hours with stops. ⚠️ Tips ✔️ The autumn colors should be more vibrant during the National Day holiday; they are currently still a bit green. ✔️ If you only want to see the autumn scenery in the photos, it's mainly concentrated between the Changbai Mountain North Scenic Area and Nanping Town (you can check the map navigation for the section covered by Changbai Mountain, roughly after the first border checkpoint). It's completely empty with very few cars! Don't miss this section. The rest is just ordinary mountains and trees. After Junjianshan, you can choose to head straight to Yanji, or continue forward if you want a closer look at the North Korean villages on the other side. ✔️ There aren't many gas stations along the way, so it's recommended to fill up before you leave ⛽️ ✔️ There are basically no shops, so you can buy some food and water in advance. There are restaurants in the towns along the second half of the route. ✔️ The entire route is along the border, so drones are not allowed. Have your ID ready, as there will be several checkpoints. ✔️ The road conditions are great, all paved roads, so sedans will have no trouble at all. Pick a day with good weather; it's even more stunning in person 🌞 Hope all my fellow travelers have a successful autumn chase 🍂

Lesser Khingan Mountains, a canvas of autumn colors — traveler post in Yanji

Lesser Khingan Mountains, a canvas of autumn colors

🍁 As autumn gradually unfolds in the north, the Lesser Khingan Mountains welcome the most layered season of the year. Starting in mid-September, the colors in the forest begin to shift. Gold, orange, red, and green complement each other, making the autumn forest look like an unfolding painting. 📅 Autumn viewing period: Sept 15–Oct 10 Compared to the fleeting seasonal changes elsewhere, the Lesser Khingan Mountains offer a wider window for autumn viewing. Travel deep from Harbin to Yichun, moving from urban life to the heart of the forest. Experience the autumn atmosphere of Heilongjiang amidst the mountains, streams, and fall foliage. 🌲 Yichun is a key destination on this journey. With its abundant forest resources, the colors of the mountain forests shift gradually with the weather and time. Step into the forest, where layered canopies stretch overhead and soft fallen leaves lie underfoot. The fresh air and quiet woods add a sense of relaxation to your journey. 🍂 We recommend the 5-day, 4-night Harbin + Yichun route. It allows you to experience the urban charm of Harbin, Heilongjiang, while also venturing deep into the Lesser Khingan Mountains to enjoy the autumn scenery, seamlessly connecting city exploration with a forest getaway. 🏞️ If you wish to extend your autumn tour of the Northeast, you can also choose the Harbin + Changbai Mountain, Jilin + Erdaobaihe + Yanji, Yanbian route. From the border city of Jilin to the Changbai Mountain region and then to Yanji, experience the diverse natural and cultural landscapes of the Northeast in autumn across different destinations. 📸 In the morning, walk into the forest to experience the mist and morning light; in the afternoon, look for the shifting colors among the layers of trees; in the evening, pause to admire the mountains gently dyed by the sunset. Autumn in the Lesser Khingan Mountains is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, and it is the perfect time to capture every gradient of autumn color with your camera. 👇 Tap the product card below to start your Honghu Yiyou autumn destination trip to Heilongjiang.

3-Day Early Autumn Self-Drive: Yanji, Tumen, and Hunchun — traveler post in Yanji

3-Day Early Autumn Self-Drive: Yanji, Tumen, and Hunchun

This route is perfect for those who want a more comprehensive view of Yanbian: Yanji offers folk customs and local life, Tumen brings the border experience to life, and Hunchun connects you with border scenery and Northeast Asian shopping. Traveling from west to east across these three cities means less backtracking. However, please treat the official announcements on the day of your departure as the final word regarding border access and road conditions. 🍂 It's smoother to start with the folk customs in Yanji. After arriving, keep your activities within the city. The next morning, head to the Water Market early to experience the breakfast stalls and the rhythm of the local morning market, then plan a visit to the China Korean Folk Culture Park. Here, you'll see architecture, streets, and daily life. Please don't block pathways while taking photos, and remember not to treat residents' daily lives as mere scenery. The Yanbian University "Internet-famous" wall is best visited in the evening. As the light fades, the city's nightscape and the flow of pedestrians will complement your daytime cultural experience. If you prefer a relaxed pace, visit the Folk Culture Park and this area at different times—don't cram too many photo spots into one session. 📷 When leaving Yanji for Tumen, treat this leg as a change of scenery rather than a race. Check real-time road and weather conditions on your navigation app in advance, and keep water and a light jacket in the car. The temperature difference between day and night in early autumn is more noticeable here than in the city. Only park in designated, safe viewing or service areas along the way. The focus of the Tumen stop is the border gate culture and riverside views. The Tumen Border Gate Scenic Area is an officially recognized border tourism experience, but actual access, visiting areas, and security requirements are subject to on-site management. Check the entrance notices upon arrival before deciding how long to stay, and don't mistake "photo-friendly" for permission to approach restricted areas. 🧭 If you have extra time that day, take a slow walk along the public riverside promenade, focusing on the sense of space created by the river valley, mountain ranges, and the city's edge. There's no need to pack in too many activities here; leaving some downtime to enjoy the breeze by the Tumen River and the distant mountain views will make the transition from Yanji to Hunchun feel more natural. We recommend Hunchun as your final overnight stop. The Fangchuan and "View Three Countries at a Glance" areas are border observation experiences; please reconfirm travel routes, access, and opening status before you set off. If conditions aren't ideal, adjust your plans to a leisurely city stroll and shopping, and don't compromise your safety margin just to reach a specific border spot. 🚗 You can enjoy cross-border trade experiences in Hunchun's Northeast Asian shopping scene: it's a great place to browse for small items, explore different categories, and have a local dinner, but don't treat shopping as a mandatory task. Recent official information suggests that the local experience connects self-drive travel with shopping; please check on-site for specific merchants, products, and operating hours. 🛍️ The rhythm of this easy self-drive trip is "one night in Yanji, a stop in Tumen, and two segments in Hunchun." For self-drive travelers from Northeast China or the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region planning a weekend or short holiday, it's best to stay in downtown Yanji for the first night and end in Hunchun for the last. Before heading back, recheck the weather, border road conditions, and the opening status of the border gate and Fangchuan. Packing a windbreaker is all you need. 🌙

Best experiences for a family trip to Changbai Mountain in autumn — traveler post in Yanji

Best experiences for a family trip to Changbai Mountain in autumn

Visiting Changbai Mountain during the National Day holiday is an option many families overlook. But autumn is when Changbai Mountain offers the highest quality experience of the year. · Today, I've compiled the most worthwhile experiences for taking kids to Changbai Mountain in autumn. Experience 1: Hiking through the autumn forest The autumn leaves in Changbai Mountain usually peak from late September to early October. With red, yellow, and orange colors layered together, my child walked through the forest and said, "It's even prettier than the pictures I draw." The best autumn scenery is in the Jinjiang Grand Canyon on the West Slope and the primeval forests on the South Slope. It was my child's first time truly entering a primeval forest—unpaved ground, fallen leaves and humus soil, trees blocking the sky, and natural light filtering through the canopy in rays. We walked for 2 hours, and they didn't complain about being tired; they just kept asking questions. · Experience 2: Heaven Lake The proportion of sunny days in autumn is higher than in summer, making it a relatively good time to see Heaven Lake. Visibility at Heaven Lake depends entirely on the weather and cannot be guaranteed. Ways to increase your chances: Choose the North Slope, start early, and leave an extra day of flexibility in your itinerary—if you don't see it the first day, go back the next. Standing at the edge of Heaven Lake, with its deep blue-green water surrounded by volcanic rock cliffs, my child asked, "Are there monsters in Heaven Lake?" No one knows if there are monsters, but the moment they see the lake is something they will remember for a long time. · Experience 3: Hot springs After the weather cools down during the National Day holiday, soaking in Changbai Mountain's geothermal hot springs feels just right. The colder the weather, the more comfortable the hot springs are. It was my child's first time in a hot spring, and they asked, "Why is the water here hot?" Learning about the formation of geothermal energy helped them understand for the first time how heat from inside the Earth is conducted to the surface. We ate hot spring eggs boiled on the spot, and my child said, "This egg tastes different from the ones at home." · Experience 4: Rafting Water levels are stable in autumn, making it suitable for rafting. Drifting into the autumn forest in a raft, with red and yellow trees on both banks and a blue sky overhead, my child said, "It's like rafting inside a painting." Experience 5: Yanbian Korean ethnic culture Changbai Mountain routes usually start and end in Yanji, so spending half a day in Yanji during the National Day holiday is well worth it. With Korean cold noodles, barbecue, and rice sausages, children are naturally curious about different cuisines. Through the Yanbian Korean ethnic culture experience, children can learn about the diversity of China's ethnic minorities. · What age is suitable? Children aged 4 and up who have the stamina to walk for an hour can basically participate. The Heaven Lake viewing platform has a slope and requires children to be able to walk independently, so we recommend age 6 and up for a more complete experience. The hot spring water temperature is quite high, so keep the time for younger children to no more than 15 minutes. How are the crowds during the National Day holiday? Much smaller than during summer vacation, and both scenic spots and accommodations are relatively relaxed. Specialty room types in hot spring resort hotels are still popular, so booking in advance is better than choosing last minute. · Have you been to Changbai Mountain? Is autumn in Changbai Mountain the same as you imagined? Let's chat in the comments section.

Follow the photographic trail through cities, villages, and traditional attire, and experience the charm of this border city through light, shadow, and color. — traveler post in Yanji

Follow the photographic trail through cities, villages, and traditional attire, and experience the charm of this border city through light, shadow, and color.

Yanbian, a border gem in Northeast China, is a fertile land where Korean ethnic culture and Central Plains civilization converge. From the bilingual signs on the streets of Yanji to the exotic scenery across the Tumen River; from the upturned eaves of traditional houses to the scent of kimchi drifting through the mountains, this place possesses both the open atmosphere of a border city and the profound heritage of ethnic culture. Following the trail of these photos, we traverse city skylines, modern architecture, rural landscapes, and traditional attire, feeling the charm of a border city that is "both familiar and strange" amidst light, shadow, and color. This is not just a geographical journey, but a dual feast for culture and the palate. The setting sun melts into gold, and the city skyline turns into silhouettes against the orange-red sky, with high-rises and low-lying houses arranged in a picturesque manner. This is dusk in Yanji—no hustle and bustle, only quiet tenderness. Distant mountains appear faintly, and nearby buildings stand silent, as if telling the daily rhythm of this small border town: unhurried, yet full of life. Standing here, you will understand: the beauty of Yanbian lies not in grand narratives, but in every inch of the eaves kissed by the sunset glow. From a low-angle view, glass and steel frames interweave into a geometric dome, with sunlight piercing through the gaps to cast mottled light and shadows on the ground. This might be the interior of a cultural center or commercial complex in Yanji, where modern design and ethnic elements quietly merge. It symbolizes Yanbian's balance between tradition and modernity, retaining the exquisite patterns of Korean ethnic architecture while embracing the open layout of a contemporary city. Walking through it, you feel as if you are in a spatial theater where "the future and tradition dance together." A transparent glass sphere hangs like a dewdrop against a dark background, with light and shadow flowing to create a dreamy and tranquil atmosphere. This could be the interior decoration of a café, art gallery, or homestay, using minimalist techniques to convey the "ethereal" artistic conception of Eastern aesthetics. Such spaces are not uncommon in Yanbian; they are understated yet touch the heart with their details, allowing travelers to find a corner to breathe and calm their minds amidst a busy itinerary. Grey tiles, white walls, upturned eaves, and roof ridges decorated with simple yet rhythmic patterns. These are traditional Korean ethnic houses commonly found in Yanbian's villages or folk villages, with soft roof curves and thick, warm walls that adapt to the Northeast climate while carrying ethnic aesthetics. Standing in the courtyard, you can almost hear the sound of an amanyi busy at the stove and smell the sour fragrance of fermenting kimchi. Architecture is not just a container for shelter, but a carrier of cultural memory. Under blue skies and white clouds, rolling green mountains embrace lush fields, a small path winds through the rice paddies, and farmhouses are dotted in the distance. This is a typical rural scene in Yanbian, without over-development, preserving the most primitive natural texture. Here, time seems to slow down. You can sit on the ridge of the field, watch the clouds roll and unfurl, listen to the frogs croaking and insects chirping, and feel the leisurely vibe of "picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence." The beauty of Yanbian lies not only in the city but also in these forgotten corners of the countryside. A woman dressed in vibrant traditional Korean ethnic attire stands in the lush green fields, her skirt flowing, her headpiece exquisite, and her smile radiant. She could be a local resident or a tourist experiencing the ethnic customs. With natural 20℃ air conditioning for summer relief, vast forests still lush and green, early autumn colors gradually appearing, and greatly improved visibility at Heaven Lake, the crowds thin out and the experience doubles. This period combines summer coolness with autumn’s painterly beauty, making it the perfect golden window to escape the heat and discover a fairyland. 🌤️ Summer-to-fall transition · key seasonal features · Temperature feel: daytime 18–24℃, cool without stuffiness, early mornings and evenings drop to around 8℃, with a large day-to-night temperature difference, making it very comfortable for summer relief · Scenic differences: August is full of pristine green forests, clear streams, and abundant negative ions; September brings gradual red and yellow hues in the forest, a stunning mix of red and green with rich layers, perfect for capturing painterly photos · Weather advantages: goodbye to the continuous summer rain, more sunny days and less fog, greatly increasing the chances to see Heaven Lake, making it one of the best times to visit · Crowd experience: summer peak fades, shorter lines, quiet and relaxed parks, no crowding 👗 Recommended outfits | mainly summer clothes with layers for safety Summer at the base, autumn at the summit—layering is key for Changbai Mountain in summer and fall! · Base layer: short sleeves, tank tops, thin T-shirts (pure summer wear, suitable for exploring the base area) · Middle layer: light sweatshirts, knit cardigans, windbreakers to handle the mountain chill · Outer layer: waterproof and windproof jackets (essential! Strong winds and occasional showers at the summit) · Bottoms & footwear: long pants or thin long skirts plus non-slip sneakers; sandals and shorts are not recommended due to the cool wind at the summit · Accessories: sunglasses, sun hats, thin scarves for sun and wind protection Must-visit spots | summer-to-fall highlights 1. Heaven Lake at Changbai Mountain🏔️ The summer-to-fall transition is when Heaven Lake is most visible! Less rain and clearer air mean no heavy fog blocking the view. The deep blue water contrasts with the changing forest colors, offering a wide and breathtaking view. It’s best to reach the summit in the morning, as fog often forms in the afternoon. Prioritize checking in from the north and west slopes for dual perspectives. 2. Forest at the valley bottom🌲 Late summer brings lush green forests, towering ancient trees, and babbling streams filled with negative ions; early autumn sees the forest quietly turning yellow, with light filtering through the leaves, creating a peaceful and healing atmosphere. The gentle trails are easy for all ages, perfect for immersive lung-cleansing and relaxation. 3. Green Pool💧 A hidden mountain fairyland! The pool’s water is clear green, surrounded by mossy rocks and gradually changing colorful forests. On sunny days, the water sparkles; after rain, mist rises, creating a cool and sophisticated vibe. It’s an excellent photo spot. 4. Julong hot springs♨️ Perfect comfort for soaking in summer and fall! The mountain breeze is cool, the hot springs steam gently, washing away travel fatigue with a very pleasant temperature difference. Don’t miss the hot spring-boiled eggs, soft and flavorful, a unique Changbai Mountain experience. 5. West slope alpine flower sea + stairway trail📸 August still holds the charm of alpine wildflowers, with soft green meadows; September’s meadows turn golden, paired with the 1,442-step stairway trail. From the top, you can overlook the entire Heaven Lake panorama with an unobstructed view, perfect for photos. 🍜 Local specialties | a no-fail list · Hot spring eggs: soft yolk texture, a signature Changbai Mountain snack, a must-try · Korean cold noodles: cool, sweet, and sour, refreshing and perfect for summer and fall · Iron pot stewed goose/fish: steaming hot, rich flavors of meat and vegetables, very comforting on cool mornings and evenings · Yanji bibimbap and kimchi: authentic Korean flavors, rich taste, and great value 📅 2-day 1-night easy itinerary | no rush, pure relaxation Day 1 classic north slope | first encounter with Changbai Mountain Heaven Lake main peak → Julong hot springs → Green Pool → valley forest → evening hot spring soak and relax Day 2 west slope panorama | painterly autumn views Climb the west slope stairway trail to see the full view of Heaven Lake → stroll the alpine meadows → return ⚠️ Summer-to-fall travel tips & pitfalls to avoid · Temperature tip: don’t wear only summer clothes! The summit feels 10℃+ cooler than the base, so bring extra layers to avoid catching a cold from the wind · Weather tip: mountain weather changes quickly, with different conditions just miles apart. Carry a waterproof jacket for sun and rain · Timing tip: visit Heaven Lake in the morning! Afternoon fog and clouds often block the view · Outfit tip: mountain trails can be slippery. Avoid high heels and slippers; choose non-slip flat shoes · Spending tip: accommodations and souvenirs at the base are often overpriced. Book in advance and spend wisely Closing thoughts🍂 The summer-to-fall transition at Changbai Mountain is a gentle feast where green lingers and autumn begins. Without the crowds of midsummer or the chill of late fall, the breeze, blue lake, colorful forests, and sea of clouds come together to create the most healing and relaxing travel season of the year.

Tumen National Gate Scenic Area

Bringing the children from Changbai Mountain to Tumen to appreciate the scenery of the border, taking them to see the boundary markers for the first time, to see the exotic scenery across the river for the first time, and to feel the meaning of the frontier for the first time is very memorable.

Korean Folk Village

Although it's an artificial photo spot, it's still quite interesting because I've never seen architecture like this before. The garden is actually very small; you can walk through it in no time if you don't take photos, so you don't need to stay too long.

Mao'er Mountain National Forest Park

挺好的,不晒路旁都有树,就是到山顶的观望台感觉好吓人哦,只要有人往上走就感觉晃晃悠悠的,真怕它😱……,要是修的结实一点就好了,在上面多待一会,多拍拍照片。

Hailantai Korean Folk Customs Resort

Hailantai is so beautiful! There are plays during the day and performances at night, as well as pigeons and peacocks. There are also various foods and games inside. Go in the afternoon and you won't miss anything. It's just a bit cold, so wear more clothes!

The overall environment is very good. Children like dinosaurs very much, but viewing the fossils is just a quick glance. The AI project is well researched and the children like to play. It is participatory and interactive.

Colorful Arirang

After reading the reviews, we went to see the ensemble today. But when we arrived, it turned out there was construction going on in front of the entrance, and everything was fenced off. The building was dark. Only the lighting was on. Unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy its beauty. Apparently, it's already closed in October. Although Amap says it's open 🤷‍♀️ But in the same building, there was an amazing cafe, C & C Coffee & Craft. The coffee ☕️ was delicious 😋 and it was a very atmospheric place. There's a bus stop nearby; bus number 10 runs until 9:55 PM, so it was right on our way!
