Brief Guide

Shenyang, the capital and largest city of Liaoning Province, gives visitors an impression of great change and modernizing resilience. As the former base of the Imperial City Wall, Shenyang bore witness to the rise of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The last four hundred years have left the people of Shenyang with a royal palace, two imperial tombs and numerous royal architectural remains. The colonnades of The Shenyang Palace Museum resemble Beijing’s Forbidden City and still give voice to the secret history of the court. Every brick in Marshal Zhang’s Mansion depicts the history of the Warlord Era. The 9.18 Historical Museum tells the story of the pain of that humiliation (also known as the Manchurian Invasion). Shengjing, as it was once known, now has more of a modern feeling. It is a major industrial center and transportation hub for Northeast Asia. The bustle and neon of Zhongjie Street, the lofty television towers, and the lively Liu Laogen Grand Stage all bear witness to the ever-changing nature of Shenyang.

Food Guide

The culinary delights of Shenyang blend Northeastern flavors, featuring dishes from ancient royal cuisine like Xueyi Dousha, to popular street food including fried chicken ribs, smoked meat pancakes, and Da La Pi. Each dish showcases the unique local flair and the city’s rich cultural heritage, offering an enticing and aromatic gastronomic experience.

A popular dish from the Qing Dynasty's royal feasts, these delicacies consist of a supple, airy egg white coating encasing a sweet bean paste. Continuously tossed in the pan, they are transformed into round, cotton-like morsels. Best served hot and dipped in white sugar, their tender, fluffy texture is reminiscent of a traditional Chinese soufflé.

The locally renowned sweet-flavored fried chicken is a must-try delicacy. The chicken racks, marinated in a secret blend of spices, are deep-fried to a perfect golden brown, undergoing a magnificent transformation. The slight hint of spice and rich oiliness make it irresistibly delicious, especially when accompanied by a chilled beer.

In Shenyang, the Jilin smoked pork flatbread is a celebrated northern-style snack. The pork undergoes boiling before being smoked, then it’s sliced thickly and served with a deep crimson hue that gleams enticingly, accompanied by a delightful smoky scent. It’s encased within a freshly baked flatbread that’s crispy on the exterior and soft inside, made with pig fat and flour, creating a robust and savory delight.

Beloved in Northeast China, this noodle salad is celebrated for its delightful chewiness and refreshing flavor. Traditionally, the dish uses cassava starch noodles, which are cooked, chilled, and sliced into strips. These supple noodles are tossed with bean sprouts, cucumber shreds, wood ear mushrooms, and cilantro. To dress the salad, a blend of minced garlic, aromatic vinegar, salt, and sesame oil is used. The final result is a chewy, crisp, and flavorful dish that's irresistibly simple and tasty.

Don't just book anywhere when visiting Shenyang! Found a hidden gem of a hotel near the North Station for your trip — traveler post in Shenyang

Don't just book anywhere when visiting Shenyang! Found a hidden gem of a hotel near the North Station for your trip

I stayed at the SERENDIPIA Hotel during my trip to Shenyang 🥂, and it was a pleasant surprise. The location is incredibly convenient. It's just a short walk to the Qingnian Street Metro Station, and getting to Shenyang North Station by taxi is quick. Traveling to Zhongjie and the Imperial Palace is easy, so dragging luggage around wasn't tiring at all. The lobby is simple and elegant, with a great atmosphere for photos. The room is spacious and features smart home controls. The mattress is soft and supportive, making it incredibly relaxing to lie down after a long day of travel. The bathroom has a dry/wet separation and was spotless. The soundproofing is good, ensuring a very quiet night's sleep 🌙. The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of options, including authentic Northeast snacks. The 24-hour self-service laundry and gym are fully equipped, which is especially useful for long trips. The front desk staff were friendly, and the check-in process was quick and efficient. Whether you're a tourist visiting the city or here for a short business trip, this hotel is a great choice. I'll definitely make it my top pick next time I'm in Shenyang.

A photogenic, off-the-beaten-path trip to Shenyang | Stay at Shenyang Station X Hotel and visit the Northeast Theological Seminary hidden in the forest — traveler post in Shenyang

A photogenic, off-the-beaten-path trip to Shenyang | Stay at Shenyang Station X Hotel and visit the Northeast Theological Seminary hidden in the forest

I have always wanted to find a place with few people and a great atmosphere for photos. After seeing many recommendations for the Northeast Theological Seminary, I planned this short trip to Shenyang. I booked the Shenyang Station X Hotel directly. It turned out to be a very wise choice, perfect for photography enthusiasts and those on a light weekend getaway! I arrived at Shenyang Station by train and found the Shenyang Station X Hotel quickly after exiting. It is within easy walking distance, so I didn't have to drag my luggage for a long time—a huge relief for travelers arriving by high-speed rail or train. Upon entering the hotel, my first impression was that the overall environment was clean and elegant, without any noise or chaos. The public areas are decorated in a simple, stylish way with soft lighting, which immediately eased the fatigue of my journey. The front desk staff were warm and polite, the check-in process was fast with no tedious waiting, and they even thoughtfully introduced me to the best way to get to the Northeast Theological Seminary. The attention to detail was spot on. Opening the door to the room, it exceeded my expectations. The room had great natural light, was spacious and airy, and was very clean. The bedding was soft and fresh, making it incredibly relaxing to lie down. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, toiletries were fully stocked, and the hot water was consistent. The soundproofing deserves praise; although it is near Shenyang Station, once the door was closed, I could barely hear the traffic or noise outside, allowing for a restful sleep. The amenities were complete, the Wi-Fi was fast, and it was convenient for charging my phone and editing photos. For us, needing to wake up early the next day to visit attractions, having a quiet and comfortable place to stay was truly essential. After a night of rest, we set off early the next morning for our destination: the Northeast Theological Seminary, often called the "Hogwarts of Shenyang." It is hidden among the forests near Qipanshan. The Gothic-style castle with its spires is surrounded by layers of green trees, and the red brick building covered in creeping vines looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. It is also a super popular, niche, and free spot in Shenyang. A quick note: the interior of the building is not open to the public, but taking photos on the surrounding forest trails is more than enough to get great shots. There is no admission fee, parking is free if you drive, and you can also take bus route 168 to Shangmu Station and walk there. I recommend coming on a sunny day after 3:00 PM when the light is soft—it is the golden hour for photography. Walking slowly along the forest path, the tall trees interweave, and sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a healing Tyndall effect. The popular vine corridor, tree hole shapes, and castle spires are all hot photo spots. Wear solid or light-colored clothing, and every shot will have a cinematic feel. You don't need to deliberately find angles; the raw photos look great. If you get tired, there is a coffee shop nearby where you can order a drink, sit in the forest, and just relax, listening to the rustling of the wind in the leaves. It is a great way to get away from the city noise and soak in the atmosphere. A leisurely 1–2 hour stroll is just right. If you have enough energy, you can also stop by the nearby Huaxia Folk Culture Village to experience a different kind of pastoral charm. We returned in the evening and stayed at the Shenyang Station X Hotel again. After a busy day, the thing I looked forward to most was returning to a comfortable room. The hotel's prime location really stood out again; whether driving or taking a taxi back to the city center, it was very smooth. We didn't have to rush to catch our train, and we didn't waste time on the road. Many friends traveling to Shenyang flock to popular spots like the Imperial Palace and Zhongjie. If you are tired of the crowds, I highly recommend this route: stay at the Shenyang Station X Hotel and take some time to visit the Northeast Theological Seminary to encounter the forest castle. It is convenient for travel, the accommodation is comfortable and worry-free, and the attraction is niche and unique. It is perfect for friends traveling together, couples, or solo travelers who enjoy quiet photography. A comfortable trip is much easier when you choose the right place to stay. Shenyang Station X Hotel is travel-friendly, quiet, and comfortable. It is the perfect base for exploring niche attractions in eastern Shenyang. I will definitely choose to stay here again next time I am in Shenyang!

Created by this mechanical art beast took two years to build and is packed with cutting-edge tech✨ It can have real-time AI conversations, speaks with a Northeast accent, and can even banter and interact. With bionic movements, sound and light effects, and super vivid facial expressions, it's perfect for taking amazing photos right next to it! The park also has plenty of rides, including a pirate ship, carousel, bumper cars, and a Ferris wheel. The indoor amusement park isn't affected by the weather, making it great for taking kids out or hanging out with friends. ⚠️Important reminder September 25–30 is the internal stress test phase, so it's not open to the public yet. Don't make a wasted trip! Trial operations begin during the National Day holiday. The venue is still being polished and upgraded, so let's look forward to the official opening!

Shenyang Citywalk Express | A one-day check-in at Zhongjie and Laobeishi

Short on time? Only have half a day? This quick and efficient citywalk route helps you efficiently check off two major Shenyang landmarks! Route: Quick stop at Zhongjie > Walk to Laobeishi > Visit Huangsi (Shisheng Temple) > Explore the Laobeishi district and enjoy the night view. Start at Zhongjie. No need to explore the entire street in depth; just check off the iconic spots, grab a quick snack, and then head out on foot to Laobeishi. Prioritize Huangsi, a free imperial temple with red walls that are perfect for photos. 40 minutes is enough to see it. Note that admission stops at 4:00 PM, so manage your time to ensure you don't miss out. After the temple, head straight to Laobeishi to check out the archways and lantern-lit alleys on the main street. If you have extra time, explore the smaller lanes. Wait until it gets dark to enjoy the district's night scenery. If you're short on time, you don't have to wait for the full performance; just soak in the night atmosphere. Half a day to hit a commercial street, an ancient temple, and a traditional-style night market. This compact itinerary is perfect for travelers with limited time.

3 days in Benxi: Guanmenshan vs. Laobiangou — traveler post in Shenyang

3 days in Benxi: Guanmenshan vs. Laobiangou

How to make the most of Benxi in late October? This 3-day itinerary connects Guanmenshan, Laobiangou, and Benxi Water Cave, with a budget of 900–1,400 yuan per person. It is designed for those who want to see the red leaves of Liaodong and are willing to spend time exploring the colorful forests! 😎 The bottom line: For great photos, I recommend Guanmenshan! The reflection of red leaves on the lake creates incredible depth 📸. For peace and quiet, I recommend Laobiangou; it has fewer tourists, and you can walk along the stream for a long time—it is truly healing. I have visited both, so check out the differences below 👇 🌟 Why late October is worth it After the Frost Descent solar term, the red leaves in the Liaodong mountains are nearing the end of their season. This week, the red leaf index at Guanmenshan is still around 60%, with a mix of maple, oak, and birch trees creating deep red hues 🍁. In downtown Benxi, it is 13°C during the day and 2°C in the morning and evening, with temperatures in the mountains being 2–3 degrees lower. After the National Day crowds subside, Laobiangou is basically empty in the mornings! Guanmenshan's parking lot fills up after 10:00 AM on weekends, and there might be early snow in the mountains the following week, so if you want to see the colorful forests, hurry up! 🏃 📍 Quick overview Best for: Red leaf photography 📷 / People who love streams and valleys / Fans of autumn colors in Northeast China Recommended duration: 3 days, 2 nights | Physical intensity: Moderate, about 5 hours of hiking per day Average cost: 900–1,400 yuan (excluding round-trip transportation) 🗺️ 3-day itinerary breakdown Day 1: Guanmenshan | Morning: Guanmenshan National Forest Park (90 yuan, start at Longmen Gorge at 7:30 AM) → Colorful Lake; Afternoon: Maple King → Moon Bay; Evening: Stay in Benxi County Day 2: Laobiangou | Morning: Laobiangou Scenic Area (80 yuan, opens at 8:00 AM, hike upstream along the stream boardwalk); Afternoon: Xiaoshi Lake → Yongge River; Evening: Return to downtown for lamb soup 🍲 Day 3: Caves and hot springs | Morning: Benxi Water Cave (165 yuan including boat ride, 12°C inside the cave); Afternoon: Soak in the hot springs at Hot Spring Temple (approx. 120 yuan); Evening: Return trip 🍜 Hidden gem food (where locals go) ① "Laobaijia Lamb Soup" in Xiaoshi, Benxi County: Lamb soup with sesame flatbread, 35 yuan per person. A local breakfast staple; the soup is milky white and not gamey—one sip and you will be hooked! 🔥 ② Grilled chicken rack stall at Yongfeng Snack Street in the city: 20 yuan per person. A popular late-night spot for locals, perfect with local beer 🍺 ③ "Changhai Iron Pot Stew" in Xiaoshi: Iron pot stewed river fish, 70 yuan per person. A go-to for locals when hosting guests; the corn cakes lining the pot are the soul of the dish! 😍 ⚠️ Mistakes I made (hard-learned lessons) ① I tried to visit Guanmenshan and Laobiangou on the same day, but the two scenic areas are 50 km apart, so I spent the whole time rushing and could not enjoy the scenery 😭 ② The shuttle bus at Guanmenshan costs extra! I did not buy a ticket the first time and had to walk for 2 hours to reach the core area. I recommend buying a round-trip ticket. ③ The boardwalk at Laobiangou is slippery. I wore flat shoes the first time and almost fell. Non-slip hiking shoes are a must! ④ It is a constant 12°C inside Benxi Water Cave. I wore a short-sleeved shirt and was shivering. Ladies, remember to bring a jacket 🧥 ⑤ The signal in the mountains is weak. I got separated from my companion the first time and spent half an hour looking for them. Agreeing on a meeting point is very important! ⑥ Some homestays close after the National Day holiday. Call to confirm before you leave, so you do not end up like me, arriving only to find no rooms available 😂 💰 Cost breakdown (per person) Tickets 335 yuan (Guanmenshan 90 + Laobiangou 80 + Water Cave 165) | Shuttle bus 30–40 yuan | Hot springs 120 yuan | Chartered car 250–350 yuan/day | Accommodation 150–300 yuan/night | Meals 35–80 yuan/meal | 3-day total 900–1,400 yuan 💡 Practical tips 🚗 Transportation: About 1.5 hours by car from Shenyang to Benxi, and another 1 hour to Guanmenshan 🏨 Accommodation: Stay in Benxi County if you want to get an early start in the mountains; stay at Hot Spring Temple if you want to soak in the hot springs 👗 Clothing: It is 13°C during the day and 2°C in the morning and evening in late October. A windbreaker and non-slip hiking shoes are essential! 📷 Photography: The reflection at Colorful Lake in Guanmenshan is super clear in the morning when there is no wind; remember to bring a tripod for long-exposure shots of the streams at Laobiangou ⏰ Avoid crowds: Fewer people from Monday to Wednesday; on weekends, it is recommended to arrive before 7:30 AM 🙋 Finally, I want to ask you Between these two Liaodong red leaf spots, do you prefer to take photos or enjoy the peace and quiet? Let me know your choice in the comments section! 👇

Marshal Zhang's Mansion Museum

This place is well worth a visit. The building features traditional Chinese brickwork and Rococo-style decorations, creating a unique architectural style. Moreover, due to its relatively recent age, many items are original and authentic, especially the interior furniture, which can be considered an exhibition of Republican-era Chinese furniture. Except for the two tiger specimens in the Tiger Hall, which don't look real, everything else looks quite authentic.

Shenyang Imperial Palace

The Shenyang Imperial Palace is also very large; by the end, I was completely exhausted. Inside the scenic area, there's Zhang Xueliang's former residence, and a financial museum was included as a bonus. All of these were quite interesting and worth seeing.

Shenyang Fangcheng Cultural Tourism Area

There were so many people and tourists that I didn't have time to take in many things. It's like a low-end version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Many of the artifacts on display were discarded from the Forbidden City. Some rooms were off-limits, so people crowded around the entrances to take photos. There was no lighting inside, so the photos didn't look great. The architecture is still quite distinctive.

Shenyang Fantawild Adventure

Overall, it's pretty good. Once you get there, you can rent a car. I didn't know how to drive at first, but with my years of driving experience, I learned quickly. This saves energy. You can download an app, locate yourself, and check out the attractions and waiting times. Boys might like the Dinosaur Extinction attraction, as well as some thrilling rides. Some attractions require separate fees, such as the Ice and Snow World and the Petting Zoo!

Qinghe Peninsula Spa&Hot Spring

We took our kids back to China for summer vacation and had our first experience at a Northeastern Chinese bathhouse. We absolutely loved all the facilities and services. Children under 1.4 meters tall get in for free, making it incredibly good value for money. If we have the chance, we'll definitely bring our family and friends to experience this top-tier bathhouse in China!

Zhongjie Street

Zhongjie Street is quite long with many side streets, lined with shops and restaurants, and bustling with pedestrians. It seems well worth a visit and is a landmark pedestrian street in Shenyang. It's convenient to get anywhere from Zhongjie Street, but during my few days in Shenyang, I only spent a relatively short time shopping there. I mainly explored other areas outside of Zhongjie Street. It was a bit of a regret that I treated Zhongjie Street primarily as a transportation hub. Next time I visit Shenyang, I'll definitely explore it more. If I hadn't been in a rush, I could have spent more time there. I mainly visited the Forbidden City, Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, and the Dadong Food Market on Zhongjie Street.

Qipan Mountain

Qipanshan is a famous mountain in Shenyang City. It has a wildlife park, a film and television city, a World Horticultural Exposition Garden, many villa areas, and an outlet town. The scenery is beautiful, but it is quite far to get into the scenic area. During holidays, it is often impossible to drive in or out.

Liu Laogen Stage

Last year around this time, I also visited Liu Laogen in Shenyang. I doubt many people would spend 688 yuan to see it two years in a row like me. Last year, I laughed so hard I almost fell over; it left a very deep impression. Even though I've seen it several times over the years, especially since Li Baoguo was just starting out back then, and Errenzhuan was much more colorful. This time, however, I was a little disappointed. The show was basically the same as last year's, the jokes and punchlines were the same, even the selling points and costumes were identical. I laughed, but the same feeling of being doubled over was gone. Being an actor isn't easy, and constantly coming up with something new is even harder. But since they've chosen this path, there's no way around it; actors need to be observant and innovative. I wonder if I'll be pleasantly surprised next time I see it.

Beiling Park

The attraction itself is so-so, not much to see or see, and not many buildings; it's just a large park. Our tour guide, Mr. Li, led the group and provided excellent and comprehensive explanations. Without his explanations, we wouldn't have understood anything. He talked a lot about the history, the origins of the buildings, and so on.
