The Inn on the Moor Hotel

I stayed at The Inn on the Moor back in 2009, and whilst its was good then, returning in November 2023, what an amazing transformation!!! The work which has been undertaken to sympathetically modernise the hotel is outstanding. The bar and restaurant have a warm welcoming and comfortable feel. The room was clean and comfortable with great views. The FOOD IS EXCELLENT!! (We wish we'd booked for the Sunday Lunch). The staff were all fantastic, helpful, and made us feel very much at home. Great selection of beers, wines and spirits in a well stocked bar and all at very reasonable prices. Would 100% recommend the Inn on the Moor to anyone looking to visit the North York Moors. We will definitely be returning in the future.
Horseshoe Hotel

We arrived quite late Saturday evening, we were bought this stay as a gift for Christmas through buy a gift, we did actually pay an extra £100 for a more luxury stay. The outside of the pub is lovely, beer garden and outdoor bar looks appealing (we didn’t actually eat or drink here due to just using it as a base as we spent most of our time in Whitby) The restaurant itself didn’t look overally appealing and wouldn’t of been somewhere we’d of chosen to eat. The room was slightly disappointing considering we did pay extra for something better. Lots of dust and cobwebs, mould on the window frame and on the cushions of the window seat. Bits of paint chipped off the walls, the whole room could just do with an uplift. No kettle just a coffee machine (I think you could get hot water from this however I didn’t use it) We had a shower in our bathroom which the shower tray that you stand on was all cracked and looked like it had been attempted to be repaired (not great) It was fine for what we needed, we slept well and the bed was clean but unfortunately it’s not somewhere we would return to.

What a wonderful hotel. We have stayed on many good hotels but this surpassed them all. Lovely room with great tea coffee and hot chocolate. The biscuits in the room were very tasty and didn't last long. The staff were all friendly starting with a pre trip call from reception. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone including a request for fried bread and the lovely Gemma bringing us an anniversary treat. Spa treatments were just what was needed after some very hectic months. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone
Saxonville Hotel

What a fantastic hotel, everything was spot on including the reception desk staff, the large deluxe room, the restaurant staff and the amazing breakfast. This hotel has its own car park over the road, which we were able to use before our allocated booking in time. The staff were very attentive and nothing was a problem. The location was 5min walk from the whale bone arch and a nice 15min walk I to town. We will definitely be visiting again
YHA Whitby
4.3/540 Reviews
YHA Whitby's location is stunning - right by the 199 steps, St Mary's Church, the Abbey and with beautiful views across the river and town. It's a beautiful historic building with an absolutely lovely private garden. The table football was also much enjoyed! Abbey entry is free for hostel guests which was a bonus. However, it feels like it is coasting on its location and exterior, and was a disappointment compared with other YHA hostels. Firstly check-in is 3-10pm, despite the YHA website saying it's 24hrs (hopefully they will update this). There's also not a 24hr reception, again contrary to the YHA website. There's a sign directing you to the cafe out of these hours, but it was a big contrast to other hostels where there's usually someone around to ask for info, provide key for the luggage room, answer qs and deal with any issues even if you can't check in yet. Definitely not a warm welcome. The room was decent but the shower leaked all over the floor - a sign said to leave the showerhead pointing down to avoid floods, but the bath tap stuck out so much this meant you couldn't get under it and the mixer tap was awkward. I doubt that any of the management have tried showering in it. The bathroom is looking tired. No binliners in bins, and no storage in rooms either (they have changed completely from the TripAdvisor photos which are from 2016!!) Loud music from the kitchen underneath us at 730am on Monday morning. Overall, the hostel could do with some TLC - and will need it if features like the beautiful conservatory, where grass is now growing through the glass panes, are to last. The cafe is haphazard and the breakfasts a shambles - no trays, cutlery running out, coffee running out, juice running out (and not being speedily replaced as happens elsewhere), bits being left off the toast machine so the toast falls on the floor, etc. They seemed to only cook 4 eggs at a time and have no queuing system so we had to wait a long while for cooked breakfasts while others came straight in and were served immediately. Some staff were friendly but others were completely uninterested. We wanted to mention these issues quietly to reception as we left, but guess what... shutters up again and no one around.
