My partner and I didn't actually stay at MadMonkey as there were no private rooms available but we did stumble across the hostel when looking for somewhere to eat and ended up spending a fair amount of time here. The food had a great variety and was very fairly priced and it was the only place I managed to get a G&T for less than 200 pesos. We also used the hostel to book some day trips. We did the 4 hour Pangloa Tour which was a great day out and did the countryside tour. Marycris helped us organise the tours and she was an absolute dream! We'd planned to do the tour on the Monday but there was a Typhoon so the trip got cancelled. Marycris messaged me to keep me updated and arranged a tour for us for the Tuesday. She put so much effort in when we weren't even staying there and we ended up having a van to ourselves and we'd fit in everything we wanted to. I can't get over how helpful and accommodating Marycris was, we were only staying in Bohol for a few days and due to Marycris' communitcation, we managed to get in everything we wanted for our holiday.

As someone who is conscious of his travel spending, it has dawned in me that we really do not need much money for us to become a more eco-friendly traveler. And one action I frequently do is by staying at a hostel. I’ll save for another post the reasons why I love staying at hostels. Moon Fools Hostel caught my attention when I was looking for a place to stay at prior to my Bohol trip. It wasn’t there yet when I last visited Panglao in 2015. Without much information about this hostel, I relied on my instinct that it’s probably one of those few accommodations I’d love. And boy I was right… The moment I entered the hostel, I already knew that it was my kind of hostel – an eco-friendly one. I was happy to have had a great conversation with one of the owners, Mari. That is when I have learned that she and her husband are very passionate about the environment. So it isn’t surprising that the materials used in the construction of their hostel are mostly recycled. It is very admirable as to how they have made use of recycled materials from their curtains (coffee sack) to pillowcases, bedsheet, plastic cups turned into plant pots, lamps from old jars, and even recycled wood materials turned into chairs and tables. Moon Fools Hostel shows that the very essence of recycling is re-using. My stay at Moon Fools also comes with a simple breakfast that you get to prepare on your own. It usually consists of oats, raisins, mallows, some spices like cinnamon and nutmeg plus your choice of drinks (coffee, tea, or chocolate). Plus bananas too! I also like the fact that they have these little ecotourist reminders all over their place – from the bathroom to the dining area. The local staff of Moon Fools is the usual endearing and respectful Boholano people. During my 2-night stay, I have noticed that I was the only Filipino. What else to expect with Moon Fools Hostel: All rooms have air conditioning. Free WiFi is available from the lounge area to the rooms. The hostel offers airport shuttle services at an extra charge. The hostel has a shared communal bathroom. A 24-hour convenience store, a cafe and a restaurant are found on the 1st floor of the hostel. There are motorcycles and bicycles for rent. Water sports facilities are also available.

It is well located on the main road where you can find very good restaurants nearby. The room is ok, not to the best comfort but fair for the price, but the AC can be a problem as it is straight facing the bed - we got sick.
We were surprised to not have our own bathroom. Which is a point they should highlight.
However it is pretty clean, despite stains on towels and bed sheets, and internet connexion is good.
Make sure to follow the guide as, as usual - when foreigners- they try to increase their price for airport transfert… which is getting annoying!

Excellent
GGuest UserThis is a new hotel with only 10 rooms, in a nice quiet back road location. It's about a 10 - 15 minute walk to the local Momo beach and again about a 10 minute tuk-tuk ride or scooter ride to the vibrant and busy tourist area of Alona beach. The whole hotel including the pool and garden area, bar and breakfast area are all spotless. All the staff are very helpful and will do everything they can to ensure your stay is as perfect as it can be. Bar prices by the pool and the minibar in your room are very competitive prices (although NOT all the items in the minibar are priced up) which needs to be sorted. The food menu for lunch and evening meals are restricted but just ask the chef and they will cook exactly what you want if they have it. Lots of items are not listed on the menu so you have to guess at the prices (portion of french fries = 250 PP). The hotel offer free airport pickup and drop off which is a massive help especially when you need to be at the airport by 06.15 in the morning. They have a little scooter for hire which is new and runs perfectly at a very good price. My partner and I stayed here for 10 nights. It was almost perfect! I have to be honest, so, the only downfall (which is not the hotels fault) if you are a light sleeper, like I am, is that some nights the locals enjoy very loud karaoke and music from outside their homes which travels to your room and can go on until quite late and the early morning cockerels and the odd dog barking. All in all, a very relaxing and enjoyable 10 nights.
IIan-aFamily hotel, very clean everywhere, located in a quiet place, Filipinos live around, 25 minutes walk to Alona Beach, the room has air conditioning, hot water in the shower, towel, soap and shampoo, the bed is large and comfortable. There is no kettle or TV. But there is a cooler with hot and cold water on the floor.
GGuest UserWonderful apartment - spacious, clean, some areas need updating, but overall everything is good! It is worth noting that these are apartments without the usual hotel service. The owner of the apartment lives right next door and has assistants. Any issues are resolved quickly. You can order breakfast for only 200 pesos per person and it is really worth it. Well-groomed area, large swimming pool. True, we still didn’t understand how the cleaning issue was resolved; in 6 days they only cleaned our house once, either this is not included, or we need to specifically ask. You can also rent a bike from the owner. Each apartment has its own isolated terrace. In general, there is everything you need (towels, dishes, stove, kettle, refrigerator, safe). But there are some basic little things missing (there was no soap or hand towel in the bathroom, there were also no towels or rags in the kitchen, and there wasn’t even a sponge with detergent - which made it difficult to wash the dishes), but I think if you ask - they will provide you with the missing items without any problems! The beach (Alona Beach) is 7 minutes by bike, there are no shops within walking distance, but there are a couple of cafes. Overall, these little things didn't spoil our stay! I recommend! Suitable for both short and long stays.
GGuest UserThank you, Captain's Lodge. My home away from home 🥰 Thanking the management and staff for always welcoming me with the warmest smiles. The breakfasts are always so good and sustain me until my next meal usually in the late afternoons or dinner na. The staff and crew that are always approachable and kind. For taking care of almost every single thing for me and then some more. Thanks, my angels! My quaint room that’s always clean, comfortable, and relaxing that there are days I just bury myself in the sheets and read all day long until the sea beckons my name. And yes, the group of expats that never fails to engage me in intelligent talks and chit chats. (Thanks for sending me drinks by the way…. I don’t really drink but hey! thanks! Cheers 🍻) The garden, the mini library, the billiard table, and the bar that give the homey feels. Until the next time…
GGuest UserThis was our first stop in our trip to the Philippines. They were very friendly, polite and extremely helpful with us. We arrived with only one piece of luggage as the other one got stuck in Barcelona. They helped us trying to get in touch with the airline company. We stayed with them for 5 days and the rooms were very clean. The place is well located only a short walk to Alona Beach. Thanks for a great stay!!!
AAdrianFaggiJust checked out 2 days ago! Very relaxing stay. Very quiet area with no noise. The staff is also very kind and helpful! The rooms are very basic style but the area is quiet and you can get very good sleep.
SSebastian LCame here with family. 2 adults and 2 kids. The hotel has very comfy rooms and a good working air condition, actually really cold at night, which is great. Shower with hot and cold water. Pool right outside the room on the hotel grounds, including a jacuzzi. The staff is the best, they are super friendly, super helpful and amazing polite and helpful. Anything we asked for was done with good time and quality. We will return to cherry home because it is a home away from home. I’m also happy to see some staff from my last visit still working there. The people make the hotel and here the people are great. Happily recommend for a stay.
66UiVVWfrGaea's Apartments charged our credit card for a ”no show” a full 10 MONTHS (yes, months) after we paid cash for our stay. This was probably an honest error, because we paid for two bookings when we checked it, but were unable to resolve the issue with Gaea's or Agoda. Embarrassing for us, the property, and Agoda. Apart from this issue, the property is okay. The stove in the dorm kitchen takes forever to heat up.
AAnonymous UserThe rooms shower and hand wash Faucet too old and stained. The water heater not function properly. Soemtiene extremely hot and sometimes extremely cold. Overall its pleasant to stay and the staffs are very very friendly and helpful🥰. Strategic location. Very close to mcd and alona beach
GGuest UserWe settled into a studio room. The toilet and shower were combined, the shower was a little broken, it was inconvenient to wash, there was no water pressure. The air conditioner in the room is very noisy. The room has a kettle, cups, plates, we were also given coffee and tea bags, two small bottles of water. The administrator is constantly absent from the reception. We wanted to have breakfast in the morning, but all the cafes are closed in the morning. They couldn’t even find where to buy water from them. The hotel area is large, but nothing is clear, there are no signs
