Ctrip showed 12 o'clock to stay, and at 1:30 pm, the hotel was told that the house was not ready and needed 3 o'clock. We went out with our luggage and went back at 4 o'clock. The house was not ready yet, and I immediately changed it, but from the fifth floor, there was a balcony with six floors and no balcony. It doesn't matter, the quilt in the key room is still tidal, and the hotel is painting and the room smells in the past few days. The river view was the most spectacular I’ve seen. Perfect location to explore machu pichu. Staff met us at rail station. Elmer couldn’t have been more helpful and polite . The beds were comfortable, we were provided with complimentary water. Tea , coffee and water were available 24hours

Summary: Inkaterra has a wonderful setting and property, situated at the Machu Picchu train station. The food is good and plentiful. Service from the staff can be quite mixed. If your room smells like wood smoke, you probably want to switch, so everything you own doesn't smell like wood smoke. That said, we would stay there again. The convenience of walking out of the train, up the ramp and the Inkaterra porter is there to greet you and take your luggage is wonderful The hotel's beautiful location, situated in the cloud forest at about 6,700' with lush vegetation, has views to the river, train and town below. The individual rooms/ cabins (or casas) are sprinkled across the landscape and up the hill. The service could be very mixed. I had difficulty at check-in with the reception because a new employee, who also had more limited English, didn't know what she was doing. At each stumble, a manager would eventually step in, but it was so frustrating. Reason for only 4 stars: The cabin (#18) for my husband and I had a fireplace and a lovely room BUT it smelled so strongly of smoke that my asthma flared and our clothes, as well as our duffel, stank for days afterwards or, until washed. The property was full that night and after my struggles to check in, we stayed put. Breakfast and dinner were included for us and the food was very good, as was tea time. There were 2 choices each for the starter and for the main course, as well as multiple dessert options. The kitchen was very accomodating to my food allergies. Thank you!! The Welcome cocktail was our first Pisco Sour and worth drinking! Finally, the ecology center and the rangers/ guides there are very knowledgeable and interesting. Machu Picchu is clearly the star of the show but it's located on the eastern slope of the Andes and the ecology, terrain and birds there are very interesting. The hotel has multiple feeding stations that attract colorful birds of many kinds and are so easy to see. While walking the orchid trail, we saw a Cock-of the-Rock, a big deal for serious birders and one of the amazing birds of Peru.

This place has everything: Mysterious smells, faulty appliances, restless nights and rude staff. You know what’s the best thing after completing a multi day hike? Taking a hot shower. The worst thing? A bathroom that smells of sewage, lacks toiletries and it’s so slippery you might get the injuries you tried your best to avoid during your hike. If being greeted by the smell of mold is your thing, look no further, this is your ideal place. Want a hair dryer that keeps shutting off? (is it timed? Is it just crappy? We will never know!) This is the place for you. (We asked for a replacement and they told us they’d bring it to us, but they forgot about it so we had to go retrieve it to the lobby, top tier hospitality.) Want a screeching, loud A/C unit that will make you beg for the building to collapse on you while you’re desperately trying to fall asleep? Book a room for an unforgettable experience (And I mean this is in the least complimentary way possible). Worst of it, when we left our luggage for storage they possibly played soccer with our duffel bags and broke one of our souvenirs: an artisanal coffee liqueur, that ruined and made a sticky mess of our stuff. On top of this, they made us clean the mess they created and didn’t even apologize for their mistakes. (just fyi, we did pack the glass bottle for traveling and adding padding so it wouldn’t break and make it through TSA unscathed and put it in bag to avoid any issues in case of spillage and they still managed to break it, what an achievement.) If you want to experience the juxtaposition of a marvelously lousy stay while admiring one of the seven wonders of the world, please, throw away your money in this sorry excuse of a hotel.

The rooms are small but well appointed. They are very helpful but only speak Spanish. We stayed in a room we were quoted as 40 USD but I paid in Soles. The conversion was fair. There is a standard charge 5 percent to use your credit card. It was very clean and the staff was very helpful but June nights are cold by the river and there was no heater remaining when we asked. The bathroom was nice with a big shower and beautiful sink. Just had to step up to get from the room to the bath. Pics are from AFTER we used the room. It was clean and made up when we arrived. Meant for one but big enough for 2 people. I didnt find it noisy and the upstairs patio was a great place to rest after checkout before the train. Wifi was solid and the staff had great advice! Great It location. It was midway to the hot spring and the train. In the morning away from the lines but direct path and very ose to the bus to Machu Picchu.

My family and I truly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Retama. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the breakfast was amazing and they did everything to make our stay wonderful including arranging for a tour guide who was fantastic. The location and accomodations were great--it is at the top of a hill away from the crowds. We loved it and will be back!
