We visit Denver often as we have rental property and a real estate business in Denver and the Bay area. We usually stay at the Hyatt Regency or Grand Hyatt downtown and have stayed at Hyatt House downtown and on Colorado Blvd as well. All consistently nice properties with well trained staff and quality amenities and rooms. This Hyatt Regency-Aurora was like another brand and not in a good way. The staff was a ghost staff. When we checked in, the front desk person had all the personality of Lurch in the Addams Family and he finally got to us after handling two other customers who came down because their keys didnt work and three other phone calls. No other staff was there. We were told the parking fee was $15 a night which is ridiculous in a suburban area but we took it out of concern for safety in the neighborhood. When we drove to the garage, a substantial distance from the front door, the gate would not work. No one answered the call button so we got out, walked back to the front desk, tracked the lone desk person down and they directed us to another entrance as "the gate was broken". This happened at least three more times and no one ever answered the phone. The last morning we had to catch a 6AM flight. I went to get the car since it was so far from the front entrance and again the garage gate would not open. Again no one answered the phone so I had to park the car and go back into the lobby. There was no one at the front desk. I wandered around the large lobby and dining area and found the sole front desk person sleeping on a couch. I woke him up to help us. Then we walked out of the garage and I noticed a security guard sleeping in his car. He saw us and immediately bolted up but just watched-did not even offer to help. We finally got out of there and barely made our flight. The ghost staff here is appalling and its a shame as the hotel is a beautiful facility that felt like the Overlook hotel in the Shining. No secured floors, in fact anyone could walk in there and commit a crime and there would be no one around to stop them. It's sad because the other Hyatt's we've stayed out downtown were top quality and definitely to Hyatt standards but this was more like a bad Motel 6. I'd suggest staying at the Spring Hill Suites or Renaissance in the area, as both are good but this hotel was just terrible. The only nice thing about it was the room because the hotel is almost new.
