I spent a good amount of time researching where to stay for my first visit to Baku. There are a handful of international “5 star” brands in the city. My local friend in Baku suggested The Merchant, and told me it is a beautiful hotel and in a far superior location than those big international brands. I am so happy I took her recommendation! The Merchant is stunning. The decor has character and details that make it interesting, and maintains an airy, clean look and feel. The rooms are large, with high ceilings, and are also beautiful on decorated. The bathrooms are large, bright, and modern. The location could not be better. There is a lively (in a good way— not wild) pedestrian street on one side of the hotel which is full of cafes. Such great energy and full of life. A few steps in one direction is the beautiful Old City. A few steps in another is Baku Boulevard, along the Caspian Sea. The bustling Nizami Street is a stone’s throw away as well. A+ on the location. The service is friendly and helpful. They were also very responsive to emails I sent prior to my arrival. The price is very reasonable, and considerably lower than the city’s international 5 star brands. But honestly, even if they were all the same price, I would choose the Merchant again and again and again.
