Hotel is almost an hour's drive from airport and 35 to 45 minute to George town depending on traffic. Malaysia traffic is not as smooth in general although distances can be rather near.
Pool area with the wide spread garden area for lounging is excellent and relaxing. Hotel is very old and furnishing are worn out. Will be great if upgrading works are done throughout the hotel premise. The staff are the ones who made our stay better, they all are genuinely helpful and warm. I would like to specially mention Wind who helps to check us in and offers the best smiling and helpful service. Vey patient and took intiatives to resolve issues, priceless. I waited 6hrs before I was checked in due to some issues and he helped me greatly and even upgraded us. Just outside of hotel are local eateries and some night market so food is not an issue with a convenience store across the street. If I ever go back Penang again, will stay there again.

Upgraded to a sea view room, 160 MYR more per night, I thought I didn't have to pay for the upgrade, but it turned out to be a costly upgrade! It doesn't matter! The hotel facilities are relatively old, but the service is still OK, the morning is very rich, with a wide variety, and the breakfast can be rated full marks 💯! It is a parent-child hotel, almost all foreigners stay with their children. The disadvantage of the sea view room is the swimming pool downstairs, which is full of children and very noisy. I can't even sleep in! The sea water is a bit rough, not as good as the sea water in Langkawi! The hotel is located in the northernmost part, a bit far!

We arrived in Penang Nov 11, 2024 and stayed at the Shangri-La Golden Sands from Nov 11 through Nov 21, 2024. We were staying in Room 540, the staff attending to our room was exceptional and the
Jalita and Razib Garden Cafe were exceptional and attentive.
I was a little disappointed when there was not even a few seats were reserved for hotel patrons for the seafood night and was fully booked by outside patrons. Think the garden cafe manager could be better in serviced.
On Thursday Nov 14, 2024 at about 2 pm, my husband whilst sitting in the lobby was cheated conned by a 50 year old man of 50 Malaysian ringgit for a basket of grapes and rambutan which was promised to be delivered to our room at 5 pm and never did. On Sat Nov 16, 2024 an exceptional Malaysian Chinese receptionist staff showed us the picture of the crook caught on camera when he left the hotel. I do not know if there are hotel and government protocols to report incidents like this.
Failure reflects poorly on the hotel and Penang.
We were impressed with the above mentioned few staff showing exceptional service and led the way by carrying Shangri-la torch high.
Our thanks to them for exceptional service and hope they will be commended for their good work.
