My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in a Deluxe Room. The room (room 7) was located on the 1st floor, to the rear of the property. The room was well equipped, bed was comfortable and the walk-in shower was lovely and powerful. Rooms were serviced daily and Tea/coffee, water and biscuits, etc, replenished each day. There was a good choice of options for breakfast, which is all prepared to order. Includes, Full English, Smoked Salmon/Scrambled Eggs, Vegetarian Breakfast, etc. The owners/staff were very accommodating and the helpful. Hotel is located only 5 minutes walk from the Cathedral/Abbey complex with the main shopping areas within 10 minutes walk. The hotel does not offer a dinner service in the evening, but this is not an issue as there are plenty of restaurants/pubs in the town. In our opinion The Chantry Hotel is a great option to stay for a few nights in Bury St Edmunds.

Good location, lovely building, unfortunately that’s all the positives, paying £175 a night we excepted a level of service, there was no warm welcome the lady was in fact quite hostile. Immediately asked our name and took payment not a hi, or welcome nothing! There was no way we were going to hang around for breakfast in the morning and experience more ignorance . Bury it’s self was beautiful the perfect setting to celebrate our anniversary unfortunately we choose the wrong place to stay, with so many options of places to stay in the area I recommend do your research and find somewhere welcoming and friendly.

Lovely hotel, very clean and the attention to detail in the rooms make for a lovely and comfortable stay. Breakfast was table service, very swift and flexible to your requirements. I have marked this hotel as a 4 because of the stairs to the second floor. I booked a Superior Double which looked lovely in the photos. I expected maybe one flight of stairs which I felt I would be able to manage reasonably with my gammy knee but…. The room was actually on the second floor up a set of steep spiral stairs. I literally had to go up on my hands and knees, and coming down because of the twist the stairs put on my knee getting down was particularly difficult. Since arriving home I have checked the website and nowhere is there any mention of these stairs and the fact they will be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. It is a shame, because otherwise this would have been a 5* review. So hint to travellers, if you have mobility issues check before you book which floor the room is on. And hint to the owners……. Add a warning on your website about the second flight of stairs so people can make an informed decision

I stayed a couple of times over the last few weeks while working at the brewery. Good location free parking. It’s an old building but solid so rooms are pretty quiet and clean and quipped well. There is a small lounge area where you can get a alcoholic drink or just chill out and they serve a proper breakfast which was spot on

Highly recommended – just spent a splendid four-day visit to this excellent family-run hotel. Tastefully furnished to fit its historic surroundings, the Chantry rates high our list of places to stay. Excellent breakfasts, too. Ideally placed for the cathedral and town centre.

We regularly stay at this central, quiet little hotel. It is excellently run and maintained. It is an old coaching inn, but totally renovated to a high standard, and offering secure free parking, a 5 minute walk from the centre of this wonderful old town, and just round the corner from the little gem of Theatre Royal.

I recently spent three days in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. I stayed at the Chantry Hotel which I booked on their website. On arrival I was allocated to an annex next to the hotel and was shown to a first floor "Superior" room for which I had paid £497 for three nights. As I am elderly I had requested a ground floor room (!) The room was quite small with a double bed. The bathroom was minute - with barely enough room to sit down (!) The building was a conversion with boarded walls which meant that l could hear "everything" from the other rooms. Obviously not a hotel for "affectionate" couples (!) Drunks stumbled up the narrow staircase. Doors slammed, toilets flushed, sleepers snored, people swore. Breakfast time during weekdays was at 7:30 to 9:00am - rather early for those on holiday. The dining room staff were very pleasant and the food at breakfast was good and plentiful. 2.98

Very pleasant one night stay in this historic building. Everything was just right in a traditional and tasteful sense. Nothing to fault, so nice to stay at a very good independent hotel. Located conveniently close to the town centre but without the crowds. Great attention to detail from the staff, lovely drawing room and minimalist but tasteful decor in our large room.
