"A nice little hotel run by a sweet old couple. The hotel offers a free private onsen which is located outside in a beautiful setting which you can book for 40min. The hotel also has a public onsen inside which is gender separated and where you can take a shower. The room is traditionally japanese style with a tatami mat, futon and low table. It was warm and cozy and there was plenty of space. A teapot was provided and you could make your own tea. You get slippers, a yukata per person and traditional japanese wooden shoes for outside.
If you stay here you have the option of using the 9 public onsen. However, these are a short distance from the hotel away. The couple can't speak English but with a translator we were able to communicate. It was difficult to find an open restaurant in the village after 18:00.
It is no problem to store your luggage in the hotel after check-out.
The Snow Monkey Park was easy to reach on foot, even if it was more than 3km.
We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others."
"Some of the best customer service we've ever experienced. Ms. Abe was wonderful and her English was excellent. The outdoor onsen was perfect, truly beautiful. A big, well landscaped area, truly relaxing. All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more. The breakfast was also very good, and the room was sizeable. This was our favourite stay in Japan."
"Mostly good experience. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The French restaurant was delicious. And it was great that there was a ski rental and storage right inside the hotel. Added to that, the convenience of skiing right to the lift is heavenly. The bar/ lounge was chill and cozy. However it either seemed there was a shortage of staff, mostly new staff, or both. The mandatory dinner reservations were very restrictive even though when getting there at the reserved time, the restaurant was half empty. And most frustrating was that there was no options for getting any type of food after 8:30. So if you get hungry after that time or want a snack, you better pre buy one of the 3 options of instant noodles from the lobby store (before it closes also)."
"(+)
Nice private onsen pool/ room that you can use alone for 30 mins
Pingpong and karaoke room
Warm blanket and nice heater
(-)
The receptionist at night can be more friendly. Theres mold on my room ceiling"
"The location is good, but the service attitude at the counter is not good. The meals seemed to be prepared to the best of their ability, with different dishes every day, but they were not tasty. And the Last Order is very early. The room was not very clean, there were several hairs in the bathtub. The large bathhouse is very plain and overall not very clean."
"This is a very nice onsen hotel. The dinner and breakfast provided is very good. We stayed for 4 nights, and the dinner are all different. Location is very good as it is walking distance to the train station. They have free shuttle bus to the train station and the snow monkey place as well. All the staff are very friendly. I will come back again for sure"
"Unexpected Treasure Family Hotel .
Because I arrived at the hotel early, there was no one at the front desk, and there was an old grandfather who came out to receive the bell at the front desk. Because the time was early and I couldn't check in, I stored my luggage. The owner's grandmother drove me to the Snow Monkey Park. It's not very far from the snow monkey to the store on the return trip. If you don't want to go, you can take the bus down the mountain.
The day of check-in was New Year's Eve, and the stores in the hot spring town were almost resting. There are two supermarkets that bought fruit and beer to prepare to nest in the hotel. When you arrive at the hotel, you need to carry your luggage into the room. Because the elderly's legs and feet are not very convenient. The Japanese dinner of the day was very rich. Too much to eat. I ordered two bottles of wine for more than 100 yuan. Tangtianzhong is very cost-effective. Have the opportunity to come again."
"This was my first time staying in this area, but the landlady was very polite and explained everything in detail, which was very helpful.
The indoor and outdoor baths were very comfortable, and it was a very satisfying hot spring trip.
Dinner and breakfast were also delicious, and I was very satisfied.
The location (cobblestone road) was attractive, as it allowed me to experience the atmosphere of a hot spring town. There are nine outdoor baths, and I regret that I was unable to visit them all."
"The onsen was comfortable, especially the outdoor onsen, which was magical during the snow. The tatami bed was also very comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. Additionally, the shuttle bus service to the train station was helpful, particularly on snowy days. Overall, it was a delightful stay!"
"Because we wanted to watch the fireworks festival and experience the hot springs, we booked a room here. We were greeted by a grandfather. It was a little late and raining when we arrived at Yudanaka. The grandfather came to pick us up. It was very comfortable to soak in the hot springs. Yudanaka should not be the peak tourist season. Maybe we arrived too late and left too early. The road was very deserted and there were not many people."

GGuest UserAmazing Stay at Hotel Iwasuge – A Hidden Gem for Ski & Onsen Lovers!
We had an incredible stay at Hotel Iwasuge, which truly became the highlight of our trip. While the interior may be a bit dated, the five-star service and exceptional food more than made up for it. We stayed for two nights on a half-board plan, and every meal was different, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. The hospitality was outstanding—every staff member was incredibly helpful and made us feel right at home.
The location is perfect for skiing, with ski-in, ski-out access. There are two lifts right next to the hotel—one going up and one going down. The slopes nearby offer a mix of red and green tracks, making them ideal for beginners and families. Our kids especially loved the wide, easy slopes. We also rented ski equipment directly from the hotel (though helmets were not included).
After a long day on the slopes, the Hoppo Onsen was the perfect way to relax. The onsen itself is so good that we noticed some visitors coming just for the hot spring experience!
We have stayed in many four- and five-star hotels, and Hotel Iwasuge is truly one of the best. It may not be as widely known, but it absolutely deserves more recognition. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic ski, onsen, and gourmet experience in Shiga Kogen. We can’t wait to return!
GGuest UserIt was my first time to experience Japanese tatami, which was very unique and had a beautiful view from the window.
The room was large and air-conditioned for heating. People who are afraid of cold may not feel that warm, but it will be much better after taking a hot spring bath. The kelp snacks in the room were delicious, and I bought some when I left.
Private hot springs are reserved for a fee.
The yukata in the room is relatively simple.
The best thing is that the hotel provides station pick-up service, and you can go directly to the Wild Monkey Park without luggage the next morning. After the tour, go to the coffee shop next to the parking lot where you get off and call the hotel to pick you up. The hotel will help you carry your luggage and send you directly from the Wild Monkey Park to Yudanaka Station, which is very convenient for independent travel!
YYvesPI only stayed one night in this beautiful ryokan and in Yamanouchi but I could easily have stayed longer, as there seems to have trekking opportunities in the area. The ryokan itself is great on all levels: clean, quiet at night and has an authentic feel. The staff is very helpful and speaks fluent English. When you arrive, it will provide you with traditional Japanese clothing in which you'll wander by the streets, go to restaurants and most importantly, explore the 9 public and free onsen in the village. I slept in a 3 bed dormitory and hadn't slept so well for several days. A free shuttle service will bring you to the next bus station (perhaps train station as well)
AAnonymous UserThe hotel is very convenient. There is a ski locker downstairs opposite the ski resort. It is also convenient to go to all the major ski resorts, and there is a bus stop not far from the door.
The hotel is still very warm overall, the hot spring is very clean, and it is also the activity venue of the photographer club, with many beautiful photography works.
The room is not small, the bed is comfortable, but the bathroom is a little small.
There are not many places to eat nearby, but the hotel's breakfast and dinner are not bad, but you need to make an appointment in advance (dinner must be made at 6:00 a day in advance), and there is a bar on the second floor where you can make tea or grind coffee by yourself.
Overall, I am very satisfied, except that I eat less. The waiter at the front desk is a little cold and sticks to the principle (for example, if you go to make an appointment for the next day's dinner at 18:10, you will not be allowed to make an appointment...)
I will consider staying here next time!
Bbb travelsLoved the hotel! It’s old, yes, but clean and well maintained. The proprietors were also really sweet — when there was a large tour group in the dining hall, they offered to shift us to the lounge instead. Perfect location for ski in- ski out, and really delicious breakfast and dinners :) 10/10 would return!!
KKheng Hua TanShiga no yu is all about attentive, good hearted, genuine good service. We loved the 70s vibe of the place. It is charming 70s style all the way. The meals provided were wonderful! Great portions, taste and variety! Each meal was different! The onsen was perfect at the end of each muscle weary day from skiing. Dont expect top of the range ski rentals so if that’s important to you, bring your own. But if not, just enjoy the intimate style of the place and the many ski hills to explore starting with the chair lift right outside the hotel’s door!
