Nestled by the serene Lake Akan, Tsuruga Akan Resort offers an immersive onsen experience wrapped in Ainu heritage and modern luxury. While the resort falls short on its buffet—a rather underwhelming spread given the price range comparable to other premium onsen resorts—it more than makes up for it with its impressive array of onsen baths, each designed to provide a unique and rejuvenating experience. The resort is split between the Main Building and the newer Wing Building. The Main Building exudes a more traditional atmosphere, while the Wing Building presents a contemporary take on relaxation, but both are bound together by their dedication to Ainu motifs—from the intricately designed lift doors to the towels, celebrating the indigenous culture of Hokkaido. The onsen baths are, without a doubt, the crown jewel of the resort. In the Main Building, the basement offers an extraordinary variety of baths, from the enchanting Cave Bath to the rustic Log Bath, carved from a thousand-year-old tree. The Bubble Bath delivers a gentle, soothing soak, but the Massage Bath steals the show. With water shooting from a high ceiling, targeting sore muscles in the shoulders and back, it’s a deeply therapeutic experience. On the 8th floor, the sauna is housed in a stunning dome-shaped glass structure, offering unobstructed views of the sky while you steam. However, the real spectacle lies at the basement’s open-air bath, which directly overlooks Lake Akan. The sight of the lake at dawn, with the morning mist hovering above the water, is nothing short of breathtaking. The Wing Building showcases a more modern onsen experience, headlined by its hot stone sauna. It blends traditional and contemporary design, featuring hot and cold stone rooms adorned with intricate Ainu-inspired motifs. An added touch of luxury is the availability of centennial Akan spring water, served for drinking at the onsen baths. This hotel is excellent, elegant design, plenty types of onsen to choose from. Locations is great, right infront of Lake Akan Ainu Kotan. Breakfast & Dinner buffet has ample choices of dishes to choose from. Featuring Japanese, Western, Chinese corner of cuisines. Highly recommended!

Very relaxing stay. The onsen was really good with different temperature baths. However lacking a lounge area for guests and kids. There is a lounge area but it's limited to guests in annex rooms. Also, during the day there isn't a cafe inside the hotel to get coffee or snacks.

Nice hotel and lovely view of lake Akan at the onsen. Good spread of food at the buffet breakfast and dinner. Highly recommended.

Very close to shopping district and the heritage village

The hotel is very big and beautiful, right by Lake Akan. The service is very good and professional. You can call the hotel to pick you up at the bus station. The room is retro, but very large. It is the largest room I have stayed in Hokkaido. There are many hot springs. The main building is more crowded, and the wings building is relatively less crowded, especially after 22 o'clock in the evening. The experience of the main building is richer. All meals are self-service, mainly Japanese, Chinese and Western. Chinese food is very average, and the others are delicious, but the seafood is average. The massage at the hotel needs to be booked early, and it is better to book at the front desk, which is more convenient for communication.

The lake view room in the Wings building is a little old, but the view is great, and you can see the whole Mount Akan. The meals include crabs, with a rich variety, and there are many hot spring pools. The open-air hot springs on the first and eighth floors are very good. It is recommended to stay for two nights and take turns to soak.

This is my second time staying at Tsuruga. The quality is absolutely amazing. Except that the room is a little old, it is very clean. The hotel waiters are very patient in answering various questions. The buffet has a lot of varieties and the seafood is delicious. The environment is close to Lake Akan, which is beautiful. The hot springs are absolutely first-class. There are three types of hot spring pools, including large baths, rooftop and underground pools, each with its own characteristics. It is very enjoyable. An old hotel with old facilities. The service and environment are very good. It is right by Lake Akan. Hot springs are the feature of this hotel. There are hot springs on the basement floor and the top floor of the 8th floor. It is worth a visit.
