Solar do Castelo - Lisbon Heritage Collection - Alfama

The Solar Castelo lived up to our high expectations based on feedback from other travelers. The location is unbeatable if you are looking for the historic district and understand the topography of Lisbon and its hills. The staff was attentive without being intrusive and the hotel's relaxed atmosphere was perfect for us. The room, food, cleanliness, etc. were all outstanding.

Excellent service, lovely rooms and a fantastic setting right next to the castle walls. Staff could not have been more helpful. Good quality continental breakfast that could be eaten indoors or out depending on your preference, glass of fizz each evening and complimentary tea/coffee/cold drinks/snacks available all day. No dinner service but many, many good and varied restaurants very close

The hotel is located in a fabulous part of old Lisbon and provides a luxurious and comfortable stay with breakfast available all morning, tea/coffee/cakes provided all day, and champagne from 6pm onwards (as well as at breakfast). The room was superb - clean and comfortable, and there were good opportunities to find a spot in the courtyard to read and relax. Whilst some may complain about the peacocks, they were not a disturbance at all and it felt privileged to be so near such beautiful birds. Staff were friendly and accommodating and assisted with all of our queries.

What a beautiful hotel in a beautiful spot next to the castle. Very relaxed hotel with 20 rooms. Good breakfast and gorgeous courtyard. The staff were very friendly. Loved the peacocks roaming around. Everything was perfect. I would recommend a visit

Beautiful quaint boutique hotel. Worth the climb to get there at the end of each day. Rich in history. Henry is a magnificent host. So caring and full of genuine hospitality. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because of uncomfortable mattress, but that could just be a European thing as I had the same issues in Greece. Obrigada Henry!!!

A wonderful gorgeous but unpretentious hotel. One of the best that I’ve ever stayed at. Large beautiful room with comfortable bed and high high ceilings. The staff are 100% lovely, just reassuringly friendly and welcoming. Breakfast had variety and loved the pastries!!! Also they had an honesty bar and always fizz for when you came back in the evening. You will either love or hate the castles peacocks who love to strut around the courtyard. I loved them . The location is fantastic and a bus drops you off very close by . Travel once on the old trams and then give them a miss as they get so crowded. We used a €6 unlimited day pass rather than pay for individual trips. Then used the metro and bus to get around ( less crowded) . Lisbon is a great city with so much history and culture.

Firstly this hotel is not easy to get to. If your taxi can’t drop you off outside the entrance then you’ll have to walk quite a distance and uphill…..best to check before. But when you do get there, wow! So beautiful. The staff are all super friendly and helpful upon arrival. We stayed in room 19 which overlooked the castle grounds, perfect for getting glimpses of the peacocks. Speaking of which they can be loud but thats easily forgiven for their beauty (you can request ear plugs!). The rooms are kept clean and are comfortable, and ours had a little balcony overlooking the courtyard. Breakfast was great and very quiet. You can help yourself to tea, coffee and cakes throughout the day too. To get to main attractions, it’s a bit of walk…just take your time and soak up the sites. I’d definitely suggest a tuk tuk tour and we also did a sunset boat ride which was amazing. Comfy walking shoes / trainers is a must. Please consider this hotel for your stay as it’s simply wonderful.

Fancy being greeted by a muster of stunningly beautiful peacocks upon arrival at your hotel? Come stay at Solar do Castelo at the São Jorge Castle, the only hotel situated within the medieval castle village in Lisbon. We booked our 2-night stay direct on the hotel website and were offered free private transfer from the airport. Note that Uber/Bolt drivers are not allowed to drive to the entrance of the hotel due to restricted access to the very narrow roads in the castle village; from the dropoff point the guests would have to walk a few minutes uphill carrying their luggage. While our room was not particularly huge, we loved the 18th century decorations mixed with all modern facilities one might need for a comfortable stay, including a bottle of port wine and a bottle of sparkling wine (also the perks of booking direct with the hotel), plenty of nuts/snacks, and good water pressure in the bathroom. What’s most exciting was that we were offered the only room with direct access to the garden —where the castle peacocks stroll freely. We could choose to have breakfast in the garden watching those gorgeous creatures, or indoor if we preferred a quieter morning. Last but not least, a shoutout to Henry who was most friendly and professional. We had enjoyable dinners at the restaurants he recommended, and felt so lucky we tried the best one just before the owner went on a two-week vacation.
