Hotels Near Dominion Observatory in Ottawa

Exceeded expectations, I didn't expect the room to be so well designed and of high quality. It’s bigger and newer than a star hotel room, and it’s so beautiful. My family is very satisfied and will book here again next time!

The hotel is very clean, the front desk is very welcoming and the bed is very comfortable. The location is very good, opposite the museum and a bridge to the Capitol Hill, the bridge is very beautiful. The hotel parking is 17.5 yuan after tax for one day, and the car can enter and leave at will during the stay. After check-out, you can stop until 5 pm (but can only stop, can't enter after going out).

A very well-run hostel in an excellent location for anyone interested in exploring downtown Ottawa. The staff were all friendly, and I enjoyed the tour in the morning. I stayed for one night in a women only dorm. The wifi was good. The bed was very comfy. The bathroom was very nice. The dining area had a nice little lounge section with a few board games. They're currently part way through renovations, so if I need to stay a night or two in Ottawa again I might try out sleeping in one of the cells!

I have not been to Ottawa before, so I relied on reviews of places within this price range and a good location. As to the location, it is good, central to all of the iconic sites in Ottawa and the Byward market itself. The staff at the Byward Blue Inn is very accommodating . The housekeepers do a terrific job every day, including mopping the floors. So why only three green dots? The place needs a major overhaul. As I write this I am sitting next to a free standing air conditioner, the kind with a hose through the wall. Yes, it cools the room but it is loud. I required earplugs to fall asleep. They have a quiet in-wall unit in the lobby, why not the rooms? The room furnishings are one step above dorm room, two steps below Ikea. There is a six foot or so wood table with two regular chairs and a well-worn desk chair and a bed, and that is it. There are in-room conveniences, like a drip coffee maker, a kettle and a microwave in the room, along with dishes and flatware. The bed is comfortable enough. Towels are basic, but one is only given washcloths and bath towels, no hand towels. The property is well cleaned, but maintenance could be better, the bathroom sink and tub had chips in the finish. Breakfast if offered daily, the problem is, it never changes. Scrambled eggs, some breakfast meat, potatoes, and little egg and cheese sandwiches. I stayed at the Byward Blue for a whole week, that breakfast got boring after three days. There also was yogurt, fruit, cereal and more, so quantity wasn't an issue. I give the place 5 green dots for effort with a solid staff that is very helpful and accommodating, but that doesn't make up for everything else. One last thing, if you want hi-speed wifi, go somewhere else.

Good standard hotel with very friendly and helpful reception staff. If you are driving it is a great solution to visit Ottawa.

Our family of 4 needed a hotel near the airport between connecting flights so our expectation was not high. We always had good experience with other Hampton Inns so this was just an easy choice, assuming a known quality hotel and also close to the airport. The Good about this hotel - 1. close to airport 2. free shuttle (details to follow) 3. has a couple restaurants just across from the parking lot if you don't want to venture out too far 4. check-in was quick The Bad - 1. Free shuttle only starts at 6am so if you need to catch an early flight you'll need to find a taxi. In our case, we had to pre-book a taxi the night before because we needed to get to the airport at 4:30am. 2. The hotel shuttle was just a plain white van with no signs indicating it's for Hampton Inn. Driver was not in any kind of uniform and when I knocked on his window trying to inquire, he came out and yelled 'What's going on'. Well not exactly what I expect a hotel shuttle driver to identify himself that way. When I asked if he's from Hampton Inn the answer was yes. But in retrospect any random guy can give me the same answer and we just kinda need to trust that driver that he's a legitimate Hampton Inn shuttle driver. The whole short trip to the hotel we were wondering if we would end up getting mugged. Just not a good feeling and I think the hotel can handle this a lot better, how hard is it to give this driver an uniform with a hampton inn logo, or print a hampton inn logo on a piece of paper and put it on the dashboard. At least something to make your shuttle and driver look a little bit more legitimate and make your guests feel a little bit safer. 3. As mentioned earlier we pre-booked a taxi to pick us up at 4:15am, turns out the front desk forgot to book it for us. When we got down to the lobby and looked for the taxi, that's when the front desk guy realized he forgot about it. So we waited for another 10-12 mins for the taxi to come. (taxi fare from hotel to airport was less than $20) 4. Not all electric outlets are working, in our room the one attached to the side table lamp didn't seem to work. Had to search high and low to have enough outlets to charge 4 phones and 4 apple watches. The Very Bad - The mattress was the absolute worse, I have never stayed at a Hampton Inn that have mattresses that dip down about 2 inches and with no support whatsoever. I'm not a big person, but my husband is so the whole night I was sinking and rolling to my husband's side. All I needed was a few hours of sleep between flights and I could not get that because of the mattress. Tossing and turning the whole night and could not find a good position. My back was hurting the next day like I was sleeping on an absolute garbage mattress the night before. We did not use the free breakfast, coffee wasn't ready during our stay, no other amenities were used. I rarely stay in hotels however I came to Ottawa to celebrate a kilometerstone (milestone for Americans ;-) birthday and decided to splurge a little. I was able to talk a friend into coming with me. I first saw this hotel on TripAdvisor, went to their own website and found I could book 4 nights for $119/nt. I spent about an hour looking around some of the big Internet travel sites and found the exact room promoted on one of them for $89! I called the hotel and asked if they price matched. After about 10min of them looking online to find the promo I was looking at, the shift supervisor approved the match! I had to agree to pay for all 4 nights whether I used them or not. I didn't care because I was coming! The location is GREAT, next to TransCanada/417 highway. That was very convenient as I had to drive to Carp the next morning and that was the highway I used. I was on that expressway 2 minutes after leaving the hotel! Check in was fast and efficient. The person checking me in was confused when I told her I was on a $89 promo, she had not heard about it but eventually found some notes on my reservation in the computer. Even though there was free parking, I wanted to leave the car at the hotel most days and take public transit downtown. I had heard even with the government shut down, parking was scarce and expensive in the city center. On check in I happened to ask how close a bus stop was to take us downtown as I wanted to do the double deck Grayline tour on Sunday and Monday. The desk clerk said I didn't need to take the city bus as the double deck bus picked up their guests every morning at 9am at the hotel! BONUS! I'm glad I asked. Our room was on the fourth floor and included two very comfortable Queen beds with 7” mattresses and fluffy comforters, a very nice bathroom, 40” LCD TV, small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. They also had WiFi that worked great! There was only one ceramic cup and one plastic cup for the first night, we would have liked two ceramic cups but it was too late to call down and ask. Both my friend and I noted how quiet the surroundings were. Almost the entire floor had booked rooms for two nights but we didn't hear much noise. Also, we were on the back side of the hotel not facing the street or highway so that may have contributed to it. If I were to return, I would ask for a first floor room on the same side of the hotel as each had direct access to the parking lot. Although the room was very clean and comfortable, there were not enough electrical plugs and the only available one to plug in my cell phone and computer was so worn out that the cables would not stay in the plug. I always bring extra cables, I had a long extension that ran from near the head of my bed to the table at the other end of the room. Without it, I would not have been able to charge my devices. First of all, I want you to know I have done many reviews of a variety of hotels over the years, and I am not affiliated with any brand, chain or company. Most of the time, I have a great experience and see the benefits of the stay and just try to help others by taking detailed notes and posting long, detailed reviews, so you can plan your stay or stay away, lol.  Read as much or as little as you like, my goal is just to help people out, and to reward places that give exceptional experiences. This desire comes from many years of reading reviews and scouring web sites but often not finding the information I need when travelling with my family. In regards to this Marriott, I have never been so impressed by the design, the value and the features of a hotel, EVER. I didn't believe that after 30 years of hotel stays I could be impressed this much, based on this price point. We stayed at a resort in Algonquin Park a few weeks after our visit here for $650 per night (granted, it included breakfast and dinner delivered to your room) and I would rather have returned to this Marriott. I kid you not, and my wife would agree. Go here. See for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Wow, where do I begin?   Right out of the gate, this is NOT a ”2 Star” hotel. I am not sure how the categorization works, but It is far, far superior to that, and that should be corrected. As a 47 year old father of two kids who played hockey, (plus my own traveling in a past career) I have stayed in my fair share of hotels. This hotel is by far the nicest, best equipped and best value of any of them.   No question.   If you come here, and I certainly suggest you do, you'll be shocked at the size of the rooms, the quality of service, and the amazing staff. Its unreal. The front desk staff were great, kind, friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks again Chris and Amani. You were wonderful, especially when asking how many keys we needed. Most hotels make you ask for more than two, and we always need more than that when travelling with family. The lobby was wide and spacious. Everything was spotless. There were lots of carts for our bags and 4 elevators ready to take us up to our room. There is a small concession area near the front desk offering pop, frozen microwave meals, chocolate/candy/cereal/protein bars and some handy basics like playing cards, laundry soap, Tylenol, etc. There is a price list clearly posted (see pics) and these items are available 24/7. A great idea for sure! You will also see an ATM in the lobby, which my son used to pay for our pizza later that night. There was a fee (of course) which sucks but it was handy when needed. There is also a ”business centre” near the lobby, a wonderful thing to have if you need to print off a document or if you forget your laptop...or if your daughter finally admits she has one more assignment to do for chemistry....lol  The elevator area is incredibly designed to be open and welcoming.
