With a coach party treated like second class people The food was dreadful the waiters wandered about with plates of food not actually getting the correct person Supposed to be 4* don't think so Staff need serious training and preferably be able to speak English.Thr rather scruffy young lady on the bar could do with complete training on wines and spirits, she didn't have a clue

Currently staying at the hotel for the first time. Hotel is new and room lovely. However, there is a very large coach party staying here at present. Chaos in dining room. Breakfast this morning we could only just find somewhere to sit, then had to clear our table and then lay it ourselves. Staff do not seem to know what they are doing. Fruit and cereal was very depleted and took ages to be replenished. Hot food not too bad but not very hot. No lids for teapots so dangerous with hot water when pouring. We have the rest of the week here with the coach party. Seems you are not important as a paying guest unless you are part of the group. Really not impressed at the moment. We did not come on holiday to wait tables for ourselves. Not a good start to our well earned break

Dreadful. We set off early morning as our offer allowed us early check in from 12pm. We arrived in Paignton around 1pm. After driving around the town for over an hour trying to access the hotel (due to the air show warranting numerous road closures) we phoned the hotel (for a second time, as there was no reply initially). We were informed it would be impossible to access the hotel until after 7pm when the roads reopened. As Paignton was overflowing, with no parking available, we had to drive to Brixham and find paid parking (after an already long drive) then “hang around” for 4+ hours, until the roads reopened around 7.15pm. We had a dinner offer included but couldn't use it until 8pm (our plan had been to relax in our room, explore Paignton and have an early dinner at 6pm). The receptionist, on arrival, had no empathy whatsoever as we were obviously supposed to magically know about the air show (even though we live in Worcestershire) as apparently that’s why the other guests were residing at the hotel. Awful communication (i.e. total lack of!) from the hotel and then an utterly appalling response from receptionist, on arrival, towards our predicament. Neither a positive nor pleasant experience (merely stressful and exhausting) - we have no intention of returning. To add insult to injury the low ducting on the hotel car park scraped (and thus scratched) the paintwork on our car, on opening the boot (a warning sign might be a useful addition?!). Also we had to ensure we vacated the hotel the following morning by 10.30am as the roads were closing again until 7pm. We had booked this offer because it included late checkout (12pm) - ideal for our onward journey to Cornwall (where we knew our accommodation didn’t allow us access until 4pm). Our stay here was a complete waste of time and money - we would have been far better journeying directly to Cornwall early on the Sunday morning. Please don’t advertise offers you cannot honour or at least learn to communicate with your guests (not a difficult task nowadays) warning them that circumstances will prevent conditions of an offer being met on a specific weekend. We thoroughly regret ever booking this hotel.

The hotel itself made for a rather pleasant stay. Subject to the moan below the food itself was very good in the evening. Breakfast was a bit haphazard but fine when you worked out where to find things. Tables were quickly cleared and food never ran out. The room was a good size and the bed was really comfortable. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Great location with a big terrace overlooking the green and esplanade. 5* for the hotel There is however one thing which rather spoiled the experience I booked 7 days half board, the evening meal is a £30 allowance towards food on the restaurant menu. This is nothing but a ploy to tie you to eating in their restaurant. There is no discount or benefit to be gained from doing this, you could just eat there on the days that it took your fancy. Furthermore the menu virtually never changes so once you’ve worked through the 3 or 4 items you like you have to start repeating things. I say it virtually never changes, unfortunately when I was staying it did and there were things not available from the old menu whilst they ran the old stocks down reducing choice even more. My advice - avoid half board. Would return now I’ve sussed out the arrangements.

I was looking for a mini break for myself and my children and after hunting around this looked to be the best value mixed with location. I booked and paid in advance, when the booking got nearer I called to ask a couple of questions about the area and to check the bed set up as the booking was for 3, one adult two children 12 and 11 but the room said double room. The staff said I'd only booked a double room so that's the only bed, I said where are we all supposed to sleep and they said the booking classes the children as being able to all sleep in the same bed! I said this was clearly not going to happen and was advised they could upgrade my room obviously at extra cost. I said I wouldn't have booked this hotel potentially in that case as I had a budget so could I have a refund which I was told as I'd paid in advance I couldn't!? I was advised they could put a trundle bed in the room at no extra cost but they were first come first serve so I'd have to take my chances! When I arrived late I wasn't aware the car park was tiny and I had nowhere to park so had to pay for seafront parking instead. The second night I did get in the car park and was advised it was £15 per night which I had not seen anywhere when booking and again would not have booked if this were the case! The breakfast was basic but ok, however the top up of plates and cutlery was slow and the coffee machine kept cutting out. The room was compfy enough but the bed didn't seam to have fitting sheets as before I even got into bed they had started to come off. Overall a more expensive stay than advertised or I had intended to pay which is frustrating especially when the quality didn't back up the price.

We stayed at the Mercure on a Secret Escapes 2 night deal. We thought it was really good value. We had a lovely room which looked out over the bay. It was clean and comfortable. The deal included an evening meal which was really good. The breakfast was not quite so good however. The hotel was being used by a coach party and on the second day they had just left when we arrived for breakfast. There were obviously a lot of tables to clear which was not started until we had almost finished our breakfast, so it was not the best experience. Apart from this we had no complaints and would use the hotel again.
