We have driven by Portsmouth at least 20 times. We decided to visit and stayed at the Sailmakers Inn. After arriving we were greeted by Merle who gave us a wealth of info on the town, places to eat and things to see. Highly recommend the walking tour done by the Portsmouth Historical Society. Sailmakers Inn was very nice, comfortable, clean and most accommodating.

Great centrally located inn in Portsmouth! Nice rooms, convenient parking and very clean . Walking distance to everything in Portsmouth and a bit further walking distance to Kittery Maine as well (about a mile) Excellent food all around town and nice shops

I would definitely recommend the Sailmakers House. It’s in a great location; walking distance to shops and restaurants, and very quiet. Whenever we travel, we bring our own pillows. I must say I didn’t need to use mine. The pillows were so soft. Had a problem with blow dryer not working . They had a new one to me in 15 minutes. Would stay again.

Every once in a while, you get lucky. I mean really lucky. Traveling solo means I take extra care in my travel research. 99% of the time it pays off. And I’m delighted to say that The Sailmaker’s House exceeded my own heavily-researched expectations. From the moment I walked in the door to the time I checked out, my five nights stay could not have been nicer. They have a self check in process via texting and you are given an entry code for the front door when you arrive. Between 2 and 6 PM there is a host to welcome you and show you the inn’s amenities. There is a coffee, tea, juice, snack, etc. station for all guests, as well as a very cozy living room area which lends itself well to meeting and conversing with other guests. The host who greeted me, Merle, is one in a million! She is an expert on all things, cultural and culinary in the charming town of Portsmouth. She warmly makes it a point to get to know each guest and find out what they might be interested in seeing and experiencing. She is the most gracious host who makes you feel right at home. I felt like I was meeting an old friend! If for no other reason, even though the rooms here are comfortable, extremely clean and cozy, you need to meet Merle! Another benefit is the inn’s location. Easy walking distance to Portsmouth’s Market Square, the Strawberry Banke Museum (a must-see) and dozens of outstanding restaurants is just icing on the most perfect New England cake. Stay here. Make friends here. You will leave with a piece of this beautiful area in your heart.

The Sailmakers House is in the perfect location; just off the beaten path so the area was relatively quiet. Short walk to everything in downtown Pourtsmouth. The rooms are comfortable and cozy. Staff was welcoming and helpful with suggestions for dining and activities. Enjoyed our stay.

We stayed in room 2 on the first floor of this lovely historic Inn. The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Check in was easy and communication was good. The location, on a quiet side street just outside of the busier downtown area was close to the waterfront and the area is quite walkable. We were only in town for the night, but I would have enjoyed a longer stay.

We stayed here after we got engaged. It was absolutely charming: historic, quaint, elegant and clean. It was within walking distance to restaurants and bars. Lovely to see in the autumn with the leaves in full swing. We highly recommend it!

We had a very nice getaway at the Sailmaker’s Inn. The room was large and the bed was comfortable. It was nice to be able to park our car and walk around town. On the negative side, the WiFi was not great, and the hvac adjustments were tricky. There are no staff on site, but somebody was available by text.

My partner and I stayed at the lovely Sailmaker’s House for 4 nights during a visit to see family & friends in the NH/ME area. Our room had a comfy king bed with a cozy down comforter & 2 king sized pillows each (grateful for that because I’m a 2 pillow person when I sleep), a chest of drawers & closet if you wish to fully unpack, large walk in shower with locally made bath products (appreciate that because I don’t like to schlep shampoo/conditioner/body wash if I don’t have to), and lots of natural light from large windows. Access in the main door as well as our room was a breeze as we used personalized key codes, and the common space had a Keurig with coffee pods, tea kettle & variety of locally made tea, basket of individually wrapped snacks, mini fridge with a selection of beverages (including half & half - there’s a separate mini fridge to store your items, they recommend you label them), mini freezer with small bags of ice, and comfy chairs to relax in and have a chat with fellow guests. Location is perfect! Walking distance to cafes (we loved La Maison Navarre), taverns (highly recommended Clipper Tavern, awesome local vibe), Prescott Park, shops, and restaurants. Communication with staff/management was done via text and the response time was quick.
