Bubu Villa is a great option, top quality food, wonderful staff, good location, you really feel like an actual guest staying with friends rather than a customer. Super friendly and helpful, very relaxing property, they take great care of you. If I come back to Perhentian Kecil, 10/10 would stay here again. That said, is Perhentian Kecil for you? It's known as a low-cost backpacker guest-house island. The vibe is like Boracay 20 years ago, but a bit less hedonistic given it's east coast Malaysia, so lots of families and a bit more conservative, but still, bars / hostels right on the beach, pumping techno, etc. It's not an idyllic deserted island, there are boats coming and going all day, and at sunset when the scuba and snorkel trips are all back, the beach is packed. It's a fun, festive atmosphere. You have access to all the diving and snorkeling you want. So you're looking to relive your hippie gap year, but you're older now and can afford better than Khao San Road, and maybe have a couple of kids in tow. Bubu Villa is your place. Small but clean and uncrowded beach right in front of the property, excellent western and asian food, private villas in a shady courtyard behind the restaurant, but next door to the backpacker mecca and still retains the local close-to-the-ground vibe. It's not super-luxe. But it's pretty close to perfect for what it is. So if what you read above sounds like a fun time, you're the target market and you're going to like it.
