Johnathan49We tried to book this lesser known hotel in the area and guess what, we were glad we did got the opportunity to stay in this lovely hotel. The staff was kind and sincere even though they tried their best to speak converse with us in english. The room we stayed in was those like ryokan kind with a toilet in it. Shower area are shared among other guests which is linked to a shared indoor and outdoor onsen areas as well. They have a private onsen as well which you do not need to book, just need to lock the door outside to inform people that you're using it.
The best part of this experience is that we opted for dinner and breakfast and we were just blown away especially the dinner course menu. They provided like 10 different type of dishes for you to taste which includes the iconic hida beef as well!
Everything for one night is so affordable around SGD $200+ which is definitely worth it!

Guest UserEverything was wonderful! The room had its own private plunge pool, and there were two outdoor hot springs that you could reserve for your group to enjoy without anyone else around. Dinner and breakfast were served in a traditional Japanese style, which felt very authentic. What really sets this ryokan apart is that the main dish for dinner is Hida beef from the region. The service was top-notch; everyone was so welcoming and kind. After checking in, you change into traditional attire, and the hotel provides everything else, right down to facial cream. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

This is an unparalleled stay, from the moment of booking to get the meticulous care of Sufang. Before check-in, the detailed explanation of the check-in procedures and the equipment should not be discussed. During the period, there have been messages and reminders to explain the rituals and various experience activities held in the temple, which makes people feel very relieved, and the doubts about strange places are swept away.
Since Sufang specially asked about the arrival time before check-in, there was a staff waiting at the gate as soon as I arrived. The staff also took me to Sufang around and introduced all the equipment and rules of use. Very intimate.
Sufang is not serious and old-fashioned, but a simple style that makes people feel calm. Since there are only a few rooms, the privacy is very high, basically you can hardly meet other guests. The room space is enough, the only trouble is that the room does not have a bathroom, Meng Xu crawled out of the room in the middle of the night to find the toilet is really a torture.
Sufang also has a variety of activities and experiences for guests to participate, there are religious morning classes, copy scriptures, etc. There are also relatively neutral meditation or yoga. The monks who are in the tutoring speak fluent English and communication is not a problem.
I am really grateful that I have the opportunity to live in Sufang, and I can relax and go on vacation in a comprehensive way. I also have the opportunity to experience my inner voice and truly know myself. It really seems to be a feeling of rebirth. This is the accommodation experience that you can't find in other hotels, no matter how high a star hotel. The opportunity must not be missed.

The rooms are luxurious and look great. Even though there's no restaurant in the hotel, there's a small mini-mart where you can grab something to eat. The drinks sold at the mini-mart are good, and there are tables to sit at, a microwave, miso soup, and ice available. Overall, it's very good and close to the public onsen.

Our stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special.
The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged.
The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat.
We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste.
The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable.
Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.

MicmunThe value for money was absolutely unsatisfactory. We had booked and paid for the house for five people, yet it was set up for only four (with just four futons and four small towels), so the five of us had to do with four beds and four towels only: very uncomfortable!
We tried asking the host for help, but they were slow to respond and unhelpful in their manner (suggesting us to look for a fifth futon—which we found ourselves in a closet—though we couldn't find any sheets or bedding to use with it). The futons were extremely low to the ground and very uncomfortable—the worst we have ever slept on. The house is very dated and run-down; it is in dire need of major maintenance and a thorough cleaning. The furniture is old, and the entire place smells stale and musty. We were deeply disappointed and frustrated with this accommodation; it was certainly the worst of the many rentals we have stayed in here in Japan.

This was self-check in hotel. The location is excellent but too small for 3 people. The bathroom is good. Room temperature could be adjusted if too cold. There was a heater available as well. Cooking could be done with the stove and more. Only one concern was the locking system. I would recommend having another lock when guests were in the room. The other guest tried to unlock our room. We could not sleep well the 1st night. The response from the owner was quick when I informed on this issue.

Guest UserThe room exceeded my expectations. It was listed as 9 square meters when I booked, but after checking in, I could easily fit two 26-inch suitcases without hindering movement. Although the hotel is a bit old, it was very clean and the service was quite warm. The breakfast was a simple buffet, but enough to fill you up. The hotel also offers free bicycle rentals. Kokubunji Temple is located next to the hotel. I would choose this hotel again next time.
